KubeCon is a yearly Kubernetes Developer event held for the whole Tech Industry to meet under one roof - putting faces to friends, partners and customers. Ricardo Rocha works closely in this field at CERN, and will be taking this opportunity on the livestream to answer questions and give us insight into the development of the event; what to expect, what it's been like being a part of it, the world of Kubernetes and a little about CERN’s work in the field.

cncf
and
they're.
Like
yes,
dude,
you

we're
expecting
a
big
crowd.
We
still
bring
lots
of
first-time
people
in
so
you
know
you
are
a
long
time
listener.
First

in
the
kubernetes
space
I've
been
watching
the
kubernetes
space.
Since
you
know
the
early
days,
you
know
Ricardo's
company
I
used
to
talk
to
at
the
open
stack
shows,
which
you
know
it's
funny.

all
it's
like
oh
openstack
and
what
happened
and
this
and
that
really
all
the
people
that
started
like
the
kubernetes
wave.
We
were
all
there.
We
were
talking
about
Docker
in
the
early
days
and
kubernetes
as
it
took
off
so
I'm
really
happy
to
welcome
the
program
somebody
I've
known
for
a
few
years,
Ricardo
Rocha.
He
is
the
co-chair
for
the
kubecons
this
year,
so
that
actually
went
they.
They
had
a
virtual
event
in
China
at

end
of
last
year.

I've
been
most
of
my
career
has
been
here
at
CERN,
apart
from
a
small
sabbatical
time,
I
joined
as
a
student
from
a
master
thesis
to
work
on
what
we
call
the
grid
Computing
infrastructure
for
CERN
a
long
time
ago
before
we
started
the
LHC,
and
it
was
very
much
like
the
predecessor
of
the
cloud
in
a
kind
of
more
chaotic
way
than
than
what
we
see
today.
But
I
worked
a
lot
in
that
area
in
also
storage
systems
as
a
developer
and
an
infrastructure
and
monitoring
systems.

Yeah
I
I
I
tell
you
Ricardo,
you
know
I
I
studied
engineering,
you
know,
I
loved
physics
back
when
I
was
high.
School
in
college
took
a
lot
of
courses
on
it.
My
old
high
school
physics
teacher
always
wished
I'd
gone.

direction.
I'm
like
well
I,
have
talked
to
a
bunch
of
people
from
NASA
and
CERN,
and
everything
so
I
feel
like
I'm
adjacent.
So
it's
a
pretty
awesome
science
in
my
career
and
love
to
see
you
know,
as
you
said,
the
openstack
journey.

play
in
in
a
Large
Hadron
Collider,
obviously,
is
something
a
lot
of
people
in
our
community
know
a
ton
about
awesome.
So
yeah,
it's
funny.
Even
you

friends,
my
old
friends
at

cube

going
to
be.

like

first

all
just

out
of
the

it's
been
a
little
bit
weird,
the
last
couple
of
years,

had
a
massive
event
in
2019.
I
was
at
both
the
Barcelona
shows
show
and
the
the
San
Diego
show
and
the
size
of
the
show
was
just
you
know.
We
were
getting
over
15
000
people
in
North
America
and
it
kept
growing.

was
a
little
bit
of
drama
around
like
masking
and
vaccine
status,
and
everything
like
that
in
Valencia
for
Detroit,
it's
Mass
are
required
when
you're
at
the
event
and
I
believe
it's
either.
You
know
vaccine
proof
or
negative
test
to
be
able
to
show,
but
we're
no
longer
doing
the
you
know
checking
everybody's
temperature
on
the
way
in
maybe
Ricardo.

we

up

Detroit

one

decision

guess

lot

community

kubernetes
actually
comes
from

this
area.

some

first
people

friends
with
also
in
the
community
which
have
Bob,
Killen
and
Jeff
is
sick
as
well.
That
is
also
in
the
cncf.
Now
they
they
are
very
active
and
also
Jorge
Castro
used
to
be
the
kubernetes
community
manager
he's
also
from
the
area.

they
are
extremely
excited
about
hosting
everyone
there.
It
might
have
been
a
bit
of
a
push
from
from
the
locals
as
well
to
get
to
get
this
going,
but
I
think
it's
a
guarantee
that
we'll
have
some
fun.
It's
also
quite
interesting
thing
to
see
an
event
like
this
being
in
a
place
that,
where
there's
a
lot
of
history,
about
evolution
of
manufacturing
and
all
this,
this
technology
that
came
from
that
area,
but
that
maybe
it's
a
bit
more
traditional
than
than
the
the
more
I.T
systems
we
see
elsewhere.

big

companies

speaking

the
show,
love

hear

they're
talking
about

you

community

so
dispersed
from
this
organization.

haven't
heard
too
much
griping
about
it.

originally

community

complain
about
like
Local
transportation

something
just

there's
always
something
that
we
need
to
look

enjoyed
that
this
show
is
one
that
has
moved
around
different
cities
and
it's
not
just
you
know,
Vegas
in
San,
Francisco
or
things
like
that.

get
a
little
bit
of
a
diversity
of
the
audience
and,
as
we
noted
a
lot
of
the
people
that
come,
it
is
their
first
time.
So
it's
good
to
mix
up
the
community,
it's
good
to
bring
new
people
in
and
there's

lot
of
community
events
for
Ricardo
that
I
I
see
it's.
The
cncf
has
done
a
great
job
of
always
adding
pieces.

want
to
share
you
know
so,
there's
some
new
new
things
going
on
or
things
that
you're
particularly
excited
about
when
it
comes
to
the
event
and
the
community
itself.

think
for

the

most
impressive
part
is
the
number
of
co-located
events
on
the
on
the
days
prior
to
the
conference.

This
has
been
like
really
growing
with
time
with
every
event
and

even
know

total
number
right
now,
but
there's

I
think
there's
something
for
everyone.
There
will
be
events
covering
ABP
lots
of
authority.

addition
to

the
topics
we
have
in
the
normal
tracks
at
Cook,
con
I
think
that
that
will
also
attract
a
lot
of
people
to
come,
not
only
for
the
main
event,
but
maybe
come
the
days
before,
which
also
opens
up

possibility
for
them
to
participate
in
in
more
Community
oriented
like
the
contributors,
contributor,
Summit
or
the
the
smaller
events
we
have
just
before
and
get
get
more
involved.
Sometimes
coupon
can
be
a
bit
overwhelming
because
of
the
number
of
people.

of
the
two-day
security
Summit
bright
and
early
on
Monday
morning,
doing
a
keynote,
so
it's
it's
pretty
awesome
to
have
that
and
then
get
into
you
know
the

sessions
that
are
security
heavy.

good
flavor.
It
doesn't
necessarily
have
to
bleed
into
kubecon
you
kind
of
get
those
focused
individuals
right
in
the
co-located
events,
yeah
and
then
there's
a
couple
new
ones
right,
I
think
there's
six
door.
Khan
is
a
new
one.
Evpf
for
its
second
session
or
third
session
is
pretty
popular
yeah.

The
entire
process
needs
to
be
available
and
so
they've
kind
of
created
a
framework
for
you
know
if
you
want
to
donate
your
project,
bring
it
in
we'll
have
some
suggestions
for
you,
things
that
will
just
Harden
your
repositories,
best
practices
for
CIS,
so
it's
pretty
cool,
especially
for
some
of
the
smaller
projects
where
you
typically
have.
Maybe
a
couple,
maintainers
or
or
more
and
I,
think
the
cutoff
is
already
done.

September
19th
to
submit
your
project
and
then
over
the
next
month
you
know
you're
going
to
have
a
couple
meetings
and
they're
going
to
get
together
with
some
of
those
Representatives

it's
awesome.
It's
great
Outreach,
especially

maybe
some
teams
that
don't
necessarily
have
the
security
expertise
to
leverage
some
very
knowledgeable
people.

love
is
the
comment
I'd
made
a
few
years
ago
is
for
this
community
to
be
successful.
It
can't
just
be
kubernetes
and
you
were
talking.
You
know
heavy
on
security.
There
are
people
that
come
to
the
co-located
events,
just
for
these
kind
of
activities
or
live
in
some
of
the
communities,
and
you
know,
while
kubernetes
is
the
project
that
got
us
here,
that
ecosystem
around
it
some
of
the
areas
where
often
they
tie
into
kubernetes,
but
many
of
them
you
know
live,
live
orthogonally
next
to
them.

know
you
know,
so
you
know
from
our
standpoint
like
I'll,
be
at
the
openshift.
Commons
is
a
big
one
that
we
do
I
love
that
we've
got.
You
know
a
lot
of
customers
just
sharing
their
stories
and
what
they're
involved
in
many
of
them
participate
in
the
communities
because,
of
course,
that's
one
of
the
things
we
see
in
these
ecosystems
there's
many
of
the
projects
that
started
at
not
some
software
vendor,
but
some
customer
solved
a
problem
that
they
had
and
brought
things
in
so
yeah
there's.

So
many
projects
like
going
on
this
week
is
as
argocon
in
San
Francisco.
So
while
some
events,
you
know
hey,
let's
co-locate
it
in
kubecon
it's
getting
a
little
bit
full,
so
yeah
I
mean
k-native.
Con
is
going
to
be
there
I
think
for
the
second
time
that
they're
doing
it
but
Argo
I
guess
they
decided
to
hold
it.
In
San
Francisco
we've
got
a
member
of
our
team
been
attending.

Traffic
yeah,
so
the
main
focus
is,
is
clearly
the
the
main,
the
main
event,
but
there
there
is
some
coordination
in
terms
of
talks
that
might
have
been
submitted
to
both
the
coupon
event
and
co-located.
So
in
this
case,
these
people
are
given
preference
and
and
as
well
as
like
for
for
for
other
reasons,
because
I'm
in
this
area,
I
also
help
with
the
patch
and
HPC
day.

So
I've
been
involved
in
that
specific
collocated
event,
but
there
there
is
some
sort
of
coordination
to
make
sure
that
the
content
is,
is
not
overlapping
or
to
sort
of
coordinate
the
different
tracks
in
coupon
with
with
the
collocated
events,
and
then
we
also
evaluated
a
bit
how
things
might
evolve
in
the
future
so
that
people
get
to
get
the
best
content.
One
thing
because
you
were
mentioning
about
community
and
things
like
security
slime.

Projects
will
still
have
their
slots
and
and
the
maintainers
will
be
able
to
present
and
and
reach
out
to
end
users,
but
one
one
new
event
is
this
idea
of
contribfest,
where
projects
are
able
to
have
a
longer
slot,
it's
about
an
hour
and
a
half,
and
the
idea
is
to
onboard
more
contributors,
because
this
is
an
issue
that
all
the
projects
have.
That
is
not
easy
to
solve
so
trying
to
attract
new
people
to
to
ease
the
the
process
of
onboarding
new
contributors
into
the
projects.

in
the
early
days
of
this
show,
if
you
go
back
four
or
five
years
ago,
like
every
show,
it
was
like.

Here's
the
hot
new
project.

now
we're
talking

mesh

we
were
trying
to
First
understand
it
or
some
of
these
pieces.
How
do
you
balance
that?
Because
you
know
I'm
sure
you're
familiar
there's
like
a
meme
in
the
industry,
almost
says
if
you
look
at
the
cncf
landscape,
it's
like
oh,
my
God,
there's
hundreds
of
things
there.
Nobody
can
know.

What
we
saw
is
that
some
some
of
the
tracks
in
previous
events
had
a
lot
of
submissions
and
then
some
other
tracks
were
kind
of
less
less
popular
and
also
some
topics
are
kind
of
orthogonal
to
all
the
tracks,
security
being
one
there's
a
dedicated
track,
but
actually
there's
a
lot
of
talks
in
other
tracks
as
well.
That
will
cover
security,
so
we've
kind
of
reorganized
the
tracks
a
bit
to
try
to
balance
the
topics
and
and
make
sure
that
it's
all
leveled
and
then
another.

Another
sense
is
also
what
you
mentioned:
that
a
lot
of
people
are
coming
for
the
first
time
so
to
make
sure
that
there's
a
balance
I
think
the
numbers
in
Valencia
was
65
percent
of
the
attendees
were
their
first
kukan,
which
might
not
mean
that
they're
new
in
the
community,
but
they
are
new
to
the
event
at
least
so.
We
try
to
balance
that
as
well
and
similarly
in
terms
of
end
user
talks
versus
more
project
or
vendor
talks,
so
kind
of
balance.

Yeah,
very
cool,
I,
I
kind
of
wanted
to
go
back
because
scratch.
My
curiosity
itch
I
had
a
little
bit
of
a
background
trying
to
incorporate
kubernetes
into
very
specific
research
institution,
and
a
lot
of
the
issues
was
just
you
know
getting
a
lot
of
the
data
scientists
on
board
it
to
understand
how
the
batch
Computing
Works
to
understand
the
distributed
system,
because
a
lot
of
people
it
tends
to
get
rented
out
right.

Absolutely
that's.
This
has
been
one
of
the
big
focuses
in
the
last
year.
I
would
say
so
one
one
thing
we
did
for
Valencia
already
for
where
we
introduced
a
new
research
and
activity
track
that
focuses
on
that
and
kind
of
opens,
the
kind
of
tries
to
bridge
the
traditional
conference
world
with
super
Computing
with
the
more
Enterprise
I.T
conferences,
but
then
specifically
on
functionality.

that's
that's.
Awesome
I've
been
following
that
kind
of
passionately,
since
it
was
one
of
my
first
jobs
in
kubernetes.
So
it's
it's
very
cool
to
hear
where,
where
that's
going,
because
I
think
kubernetes
does
allow
some
scheduling,
it
allows
you
to
make
better
use
of
some
high
performance
Computing.
If
it's
set
up
properly
I'll
say
that,
but
it
can
sometimes
be
a
headache
right
as
I'm
sure
you're
aware.

need

think

they're
doing
a
lot
more
public
clouds,

need

highlight
usage
of
cloud
native
in

of
automotive
industry

could

will

try
to

the
same

we
talked
about
diversity
in
terms
of
end
users
versus
other
kind
of
talks
and
even
different
companies
submitting.
We
also
try
to

have
enough
content
that
is
local
or
close
to
the
events.

Europe
we
try
to
have
a
significant
number
of
European
submissions
so
that
we
in
in
the
program
this
this
is
also
reflected
so
that
a
lot
of
these
companies
will
be
more
familiar
to
the
attendees,
which
kind
of
also
has
has
some
impact
to
listen
to
reports
from
from.
Maybe
the
companies
that
you
use
every
day
they
interact
every
day
to
know
that
they
are
using
the
same
Technologies
you're
dealing
with
every
day
as
well,
that
that's
also
a
nice
thing
to
have.

the
meetups
as
well
I
know
cncf
has
the
separate
meetups.
If
you're
looking
for
virtual
passes
as
part
of
the
Canadian
Meetup
crew,
we
typically
have
some
codes
as
well.
So
if
you're
a
part
of
meetups
that
that's
also
a
great
way
to
meet
people
and
and
get
started
in
the
project,
so
you
don't
have
to
you
can
go
to
a
monthly
event
instead
of
kubecon
once
every
blue
moon,
yeah.

virtually
attending
kubecon

Valencia
that

wasn't
as
busy
as
it
was

ones

kind

started

did
kind
of
miss
some
of
the
funny
chats
from
the
the
maintainers.

it
comes
to
the

latest
release.

think
for
for
kubernetes
125,
the
the
main.
The
main
thing
is
the
security
policy
removal
after
the
application
a
couple
of
years
a
couple
of
versions
ago.
This
is
kind
of
the
end
of
a
process
that
started
when
a
lot
of
the
apis
moved
to
stable
and
and
had
some
changes,
and
this
this
did
have
an
impact,
especially
with
the
migration,
the
only
to
move
to
from
121
to
122.

kind
of
a
big
one,
but
I
think
the
in
that
area.
It's
it's
clearly
there
will
be
a
consolidation,
also
the
the
change
in
policy
to
not
have
better
apis
enabled
by
default
for
for
new
new
apis.
This
is
something
that
people
will
appreciate
so
that
you
know
you
know
when
you,
when
you're
in
better
that
this
is
better
and.

seems
like
a
lot
of
consolidation,

think
in
this
latest
release.

of
the

removal

storage
drivers

terms

Maintenance

community

the

upstream

think,
because,
obviously
you
have
a
lot
of
different
storage
drivers
that
are
maintained
by
different
groups.

it's

example,
we've
been
using
CSI
and
storage
drivers
for
all
our
storage
systems
for
for
quite
a
while,
and
also
we
had
moved
to
con
to
out
of
out
of
Docker
for
runtime
for
a
while
as
well.

it's
kind

it
highlights
that
it's
always
better
to
kind
of
push
these
things
as
as
soon
as
they're
announced
and
waiting
for
the
last
release,
which
which
always
puts
a
bit
more
pressure
into.

yeah
one
of
those
challenging
things
out
there?
Hopefully,
you
know
everybody's
seen
the
communication
not
waiting
too
long.
Taking
advantage
of
that,

we

years

maturity
level
of

kubernetes
in
this
space,
but
there
were
some
decisions
that
we
all
made
as
a
community
early
on
and
right,
deprecating,
certain
things.

API
I
should
be
able
to
count
on
that
for
a
long
time.

a
couple
years
ago
we
reached
the
maturity
and
some
of
the
some
of
the
earlier
things.

need
to
kind
of
clean
it
out
so

it's

overall

are
