Creating Custom Operator Catalogs for OpenShift
Karena Angell (Red Hat) Andre Tost (IBM)

OpenShift Commons Gathering KubeCon NA
November 2020

Operators are a great way to package up single applications and features for OpenShift, as well as other Kubernetes based application environments. But what if you could build a custom operator catalog of applications that can be added to the administrator console? Building custom operator catalogs allow you to add an index of applications to be easily accessed and deployed from the console. This session walks through the steps required to create one in OpenShift as well as a demo example of a custom operator catalog using IBM Cloud Paks.

Accelerating the Journey to Hybrid Cloud with Konveyor
Amith Singhee (IBM) | James Labocki (Red Hat)

OpenShift Commons Gathering KubeCon NA
November 17 2020

Modernizing applications to realize the benefits of hybrid cloud can be a daunting task. Konveyor is a community of people passionate about helping others modernize and migrate their applications to the hybrid cloud by building tools, best practices, and providing advice on how to break down monoliths, adopt containers, and embrace Kubernetes. In this presentation you will learn about the Konveyor community, it's tools, and see a live demonstration of a recently open sourced tool - move2kube - which can help customers migrate application from cloud foundry and swarm to Kubernetes.

Keynote: Better Together: OpenShift and RHEL
Dr. Stefanie Chiras (Red Hat)

OpenShift Commons Gathering KubeCon NA
November 17, 2020

The world of IT is constantly changing with new technologies and processes. One way to reduce this complexity is to build and run your applications on a common set of platforms that can handle both traditional and cloud-native applications. Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) runs both traditional applications, and also powers Red Hat OpenShift, which you can use to build and run cloud-native applications. Learn how Red Hat is utilizing latest technologies and processes to power the next generation of IT.

GPU-Accelerated AI and ML with OpenShift Container Platform
Diane Feddema (Red Hat) | Michael Bennett (Dell)

OpenShift Commons Gathering KubeCon NA
November 17, 2020

This presentation by Dell Technologies and Red Hat will go over OpenShift Container Platform 4.3, and show how we have proven the performance of containerized machine learning workloads accelerated with NVIDIA GPUs and how they can match baremetal systems. You will see the results of our development effort including MLPerf benchmark results that show performance of training and inference on both the Dell EMC PowerEdge R740 and C4140 NVLink platforms using NVIDIA T4 and V100 GPUs. This session will also cover monitoring dashboards built with Grafana and Prometheus that enable IT operators to track metrics relevant to this validated design. Finally, there will be discussion of the essential software tools that enable machine learning on OpenShift such as NGC containers and the NVIDIA GPU operator.

HPC on Openshift Deploying scientific workloads on Red Hat OpenShift with the MPI Operator

David Gray (Red Hat)
OpenShift Commons Gathering KubeCon NA
November 17 2020

High Performance Computing (HPC) workloads increasingly rely on the use of containers that make applications easier to manage, preserve their dependencies and add portability across different environments. Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform is a Kubernetes-based platform for deploying containerized applications on shared compute resources. In this talk we will show how to effectively deploy scientific applications, GROMACS and SPECFEM3D Globe, on OpenShift using the MPI Operator from the Kubeflow project using two different distributed shared filesystems, Lustre and CephFS.

Operators Everywhere
Jason Dobies and Josh Woods(Red Hat)
OpenShift Commons Gathering KubeCon NA
November 17 2020

Join Red Hat's Josh Wood and Jason Dobies, co-authors of the Kubernetes Operators book (O'Reilly, 2020), for a surveillance flight over the Operator development landscape. Your co-pilots will direct your attention out of the cabin windows to identify the biggest news and latest features in the Operator Framework for building and distributing Operators. Get a quick backgrounder on the purpose and adoption of Kubernetes Operators, and what it means that the Operator Framework became a CNCF incubating project this summer. Gaze at the new features and upstreamward standardization resulting from the Operator SDK's adoption of Kubebuilder's extensions and project layouts, and learn about the alternative ways to build Operators in a variety of languages that have sprung up around the community.

Red Hat OpenShift on IBM Power and IBM Z
OpenShift Commons Gathering 2020 at Kubecon/NA
November 17, 2020
Christy Norman (IBM) | Marcel Mitran (IBM)

Red Hat OpenShift enables businesses to easily develop and deploy applications across the hybrid cloud. In many enterprises the latter includes on-premises IT infrastructure such as IBM Power and IBM Z. In this breakout, Marcel Mitran from IBM Z and Christy Norman from IBM Power show how the user experience remains the same, and then explore the reasons why businesses would want to deploy Red Hat OpenShift on IBM Power and IBM Z. Backed up by common use cases and customer examples, they describe the technical scenarios possible, and then review the special considerations in deploying Red Hat OpenShift on IBM Power and IBM Z.
