Latino
community
in
the
celebration

am

Yesterday
we
hosted
the
first-ever
Latinos
and
government
happy
hour
in
the
courtyard
sponsored
by
by
Pico,
and
most
of
the
staff
was
upset
that
it
took
me
11
years
and
council
to
get
it
done
and
when
I
said
to
everybody,
I'm
gonna
do
it
again
next
year,
that's
like
why
do
we
gotta
wait
another
year?
So
you
know
there's
a
lot
of
Latinos
all
over
and
I
want
to
particularly
say
this
story,
because
there
was
a
woman
who
was
part
of
my
adult
education
program
at
a
speed
on
who
came
in
to
take.

English
classes
ended
up
going
to
Community
College
and
taking
a
science
class
taught
by
Andrzej
devalue
my
legislative
assistants
mother
and
is
now
a
chemical
engineer
in
the
water
department,
and
so
there
was
a
lot
of
fascinating
people
from
different
departments
and
in
the
city
of
Philadelphia.
So
it
was
a
great
time
and
we
know
a
lot
of
them
like
to
hang
now,
so
we
might
have
to
meet
up
quarterly
celebrate
Hispanic
month
anytime.

our
honoree
congratulating

the
Honorable
Nelson
Diaz
on
the

his

Diaz,
who

raised

a
New
York
tenement
until
age,
10,
grew
up
to
become
the
first
Latino
ever
admitted
to
the
Bar
Association
in
Pennsylvania.

Latino
ever

serve

judge

Commonwealth
of
Pennsylvania,
the
first
Latino
ever
to
partner
in
a
Philadelphia
big
law
firm
and
the
first
non-white
general
counsel
for
the
United
States

Housing
and
Urban
Development,
and

city
solicitor
of
Latino
heritage

Nelson
Diaz
has
been
a
leading
advocate
for
quality,
affordable
housing,
since
he
moved
out
of
his
tenement
to
a
newly
constructed
public
housing
development
in
West
Harlem,
and
saw
the
transformative
impact
that
quality
housing
can
have
on
a
family
in
Philadelphia
he
founded
Jose,
a
Community
Development
Corporation
that
has
provided
safe
and
healthy
homes
for
hundreds
of
families.

Washington
he
focused
hood
on
increasing
public
and
mixed
use
of
housing
and.

Whereas
Nelson
Diaz,
a
proud
graduate
of
the
Temple
University
Beasley
School
of
Law,
has
spent
his
career
fighting
for
justice
and
representation
among
Latinos
in
the
philosophy
of
business
and
legal
communities,

blocade

Oro
commercial
corridor.
He
opened
the
city's
procurement
processes
to
minority
contractors.

Diaz's
vision

justice
is
embedded

1977
he
served
a
special
assistant
to
Vice
President
Walter
Mondale
on
a
White
House
fellowship
in
1981.

elected

Court
of
Common
Pleas.
In
1993
he
was
appointed
by
President
Bill
Clinton
as
general
counsel
of
HUD
in
nineteen
2001.
He
was
appointed
by
Mayor
John
Street
as
city
solicitor
and
was
the
first
Latino
to
hold
this
position

a
successful
lawyer

activist

my
mentor
Charlie
Bowser's
birthday
was
on
the
9th
and
so
I
made
the
unveiling
of
my
book
on
the
9th
to
honor
my
mentor
child
Bowser,
where
none
of
us
would
be
here
who
happened
to
be
either
minority
or
a
woman
in
this
city
council,
but
for
the
trailblazing
activities
and
influence
of
Charlie
Bowser.
But
today
we
break
with
another
tradition,
which
is
the
accomplishments
of
Hispanics
in
our
city.
They
are
the
poorest
and
least
educated
community
in
Philadelphia.

The
history
of
the
poor
eating
community
has
not
been
told,
and
so
I
was
requested
by
the
temple
press
and
professors
to
coordinate
on
some
of
that
history,
which
shows
the
collaboration
of
the
african-american
community
and
Latino
community
from
the
day
that
I
got
here
when
I
founded
the
black
Lawson
Association
and
founded
the
Latino
Student
Association,
and
continued
to
work
against
the
violence
that
was
occurring
within
the
city
between
the
communities.
We
show
how
the
impactful
of
wars
that
have
that
relationship
and
that
coalition
to
show
the
value
of
education
is
important.

show
the
story
to
others
in
the
community,
because
it
is
your
story,
it
is
their
story
and
I
would
believe
that
when
you
see
this,
that
you
should
also
write
about
the
inter
relationship
and
what
occurs
within
your
own
community
and
your
own
life.

you
have
been
so
friendly
and
helpful
to
me
in
my
public
service
and
have
gotten
me
to
some
reality.
At
times,
I
have
tried
to
serve
each
in
one
of
you
as
I
reach,
sort
of
the
end

other
side

my

had

to
get
in

those
that
helped
me
with
the
court
reform.

the
court
reform
and
I
gave
you
back
two
hundred
million
dollars
and
they
they
thanked
me
very
much
by
removing
me.

historic
area,
and
that

much

area
is
rich
in
history
very
diverse
and
a
rich
sort
of
cultural
history
as
well,
and
that's
our
mission

dispel

misconception
and
preserve
and
promote
the
true
history
of
the
Northeast.

anniversary

the

airmail
flight
that
landed

Northeast
Philadelphia

spearheaded
