Councilman Derek Green (At-Large) introduces a resolution calling for a moment of silence in honor of the 50th anniversary of the “I Am a Man” campaign and the sacrifices of Memphis sanitation workers who protested successfully for their economic rights and social dignity.

Department
of
Public
Works
went
on
strike,
demanding
recognition
of
their
union,
better
safety
standards
and
decent
wage
and
by
the
beginning
of
March
local
high
school
students,
college
students,
nearly
a
quarter
of
them
white
or
participating
alongside
garbage
workers
and
daily
marches,
and
over
100
people,
including
several
ministers,
have
been
arrested
and
on
March
29th.
More
than
200
striking
workers
continued
their
daily
march.

was
getting
ready
for
dinner,
he
was
shot
and
killed
on
a
balcony
of
the
Lorraine
Motel
spurring
an
estimated
42,000
people
led
by
his
wife,
Coretta
Scott
King
SCLC
and
union
leaders
silently
marched
through
Memphis
in
his
honor
four
days
later,
demanding
that
the
city
RC,
the
Yoon's
requests
and
negotiators
finally
reached
a
deal
on
April
16th,
allowing
the
City
Council
to
recognize
the
Union
and
guarantee
a
better
wage.
Today
we
join
with
cities
from
around
this
country
to
pass
this
resolution
in
support
of
this
50th
anniversary.
