Kulu
melee
was
founded
in
1969
by
legendary
drummer
baba,
Robert
EB,
Cooley
Crowder,
the
dynamic
ensemble
is
the
oldest
continually
performing
African
dance
and
drum
and
sambal
in
the
nation
and
whereas
under
Crowder's
expert
tutelage,
the
ensemble
continued.
The
traditions
of
iconic
dancer,
choreographers,
pearl
Primus
and
Katherine
Dunham
by
performing
authentic
dances
of
Africa
and
its
diaspora
and
became
a
major
part
of
the
foundation
of
Philadelphia's
black
arts.

Movement
of
the
1960s
and
1970s
Kulu
Mele
helped
give
birth
to
a
cultural
Renaissance
in
Philadelphia's
african-american
communities
and
attracted
those
who
were
eager
to
study
and
experience.
African
culture
through
the
Performing
Arts
scores
of
dancers
and
drummers
were
trained
by
Crowder
through
Hulu
melee.
At
his
long-time
headquarters
in
West
Philadelphia,
Lee,
Cultural,
Center
and.

Whereas
Kulu
melee
has
been
a
crucial
training
ground
for
African,
dance,
drum
and
culture
throughout
the
Philadelphia
region,
over
77
dancers
and
musicians
have
participated
in
Kulu,
mainly
through
the
years.
The
Philadelphia
based
instance,
omble,
is
dedicated
to
serving
the
community
by
presenting
and
preserving
the
culture,
dance
and
music
of
Africa
and
its
diaspora,
and
whereas
Cooley
melee
draws
on
the
music
and
movement
of
Brazil,
Haiti
Cuba,
Nigeria
Guana
and
san
Gambia.

incredibly
honored
to
celebrate
this
fiftieth
anniversary,
mama,
Dottie
and
family.
You,
you
are
family
as
much
as
anything
else
than
thank
you
for
helping
building
it's
extraordinary,
an
extraordinary
organization
and
institution
and
uplifting
the
importance
of
art
as
not
only
an
extraordinary
cultural
form,
but
as
a
transfer
of
knowledge
and
language,
culture,
history

1990s
dorothy
mama
Dottie
Wilkie
became
artistic
director
and
started
incorporating
West
African
dance
into
the
choreography
she

her
husband,

drummers.

2007.
She
was
awarded
the
prestigious
pew
fellowship
in
the
arts
for
dance.

Curtis
strives

Philadelphia
community

it

performances

Philadelphia,

them
free

the
public.
We
have
ongoing
relationships
with
public
schools,
health
and
social
organizations,
and
our
alumni
have
gone
on
to
found
very
important
and
impactful
new
organizations
in
Philadelphia.

are
always
striving
to
get
better
and
in
our
education
and
our
operations
and
honor
in
our
relationship
with
the
community,
and
we
invite
this
council
and
way
by
everybody
here
in
this
room
to
visit
Curtis
come
to
our
concerts

give
us
feedback

we

become
better
all
the

system,

internal
system

supposed

administer
payroll,

pensions

25,000
city
employees.
It
has
encountered
some
serious
errors
and
issues
since
its
implementation.
In
addition
to
being
almost
four
years
behind
its
initial
launch
date
of
December
2015.

Most
recently
reported
by
the
Philippine
choir
indicated
that
thousands
of
employees
were
underpaid
and
overpaid,
and
the
city
remains
unaware
of
how
much
money
was
lost.
Litigation
from
city,
employee
unions
increases
in
overtime
due
to
miscalculations
for
thousands
of
employees
who
earn
time-and-a-half
and
inaccurate
sick
time
and
vacation
time,
leaving
employees
tasked
with
tracking
their
own
time.

This
resolution
ensures
that
a
full
investigation
in
order

one
philly
will

a
priority
of
the
city
controllers
office
due
to

severity
of
the
issues
being
reported,
it's
completely
unacceptable
for
the
city
to

tax.
Credit
is
specifically
intended
to
give
grandparents
who
are
serving
as
the
primary
caretakers
for
their
biological
or
legal
grandchildren.

A
much-needed
annual
tax
break
I
hear
from
our
citizens
city's
senior
citizens
all
the
time,
just
how
difficult
it
is
for
them
to
remain
in
the
city
and
still
make
ends
meet.
Unfortunately,
the
number
of
grandparents
who
serve
as
the
primary
caretakers
for
their
grandchildren
continues
to
grow
here
in
Philadelphia
and
across
the
nation.
There
are
numerous
societal
issues
that
are
behind
this
growing
trend:
joblessness,
poverty,
addiction,
mental
illness
and
much
more.
J
The
parents
often
have
no
choice
but
to
place
their
children
in
the
care
of
the
children's
grandparents,
many
of
whom
are
on
fixed
income.
The
grandparents
child
tax
credit,
I
am
proposing
would
provide
an
annual
tax
credit
of
80%
of
the
grandparents
annual
real
estate
taxes
with
a
maximum
credit
of
$3,800
per
year.
Any
unused
real
estate
tax
credit
in
any
given
year
could
be
carried
over
to
the
next
year.

Only
one
grandparent,
who
claimed
the
grandchild
of
grandchildren
or
as
dependents
that
have
any
given
tax
year
grandparents
would
apply
for
the
grandparent
child
care
tax
credit
by
completing
a
form
by
the
City
Department
of
Revenue.
The
second
ordinance
I'm
introducing
today
is
called
the
working
grandparent
Tax
Credit,
and
it
would
provide
an
annual
real
estate
tax
credit
for
any
grandparent
who
can
reasonably
demonstrate
that
they
are
the
primary
caretaker
for
their
biological
or
legal
grandchildren
well-being
and
is
also
still
in
the
workforce.

The
third
noir
ordinance
I'm
introducing
today
is
intended
to
give
working
parents
who
have
to
place
their
child
or
children
in
daycare
a
break
on
their
real
estate
taxes.
The
the
the
parent
childcare
real
estate
tax
credit,
like
the
grandparent
tax
credit
ordinance
previously
discussed,
would
provide
an
annual
tax
credit
equal
to
80
percent
of
the
parents,
annual
real
estate
taxes,

a

said
yes,

was
her
constitutional
right

court

He
believed
as
I

diversity
should
never

viewed

as
a
promise
and
so
I
thought
it
appropriate.
Given
his
wonderful
history
and
his
life
story
that
we
should
acknowledge
the
important
work
he's
done
and
the
his
courage
for
all
the
work
he's
done
on
behalf
of
people
of
color
and
those
who
want
to
do
the
right
thing.

Hopkins

graduation

close
out

his
remarks

Autism
Speaks,
walk

region

be

Citizens
Bank

This
Saturday
October
19th,

registration
starts

8:30.
The
opening
ceremony
begins
at
10:00
a.m.
as
many
people
in
this
room
and
who
can
hear
the
sound
of
my
voice
know
that
my
son
Julian,
is
on
the
autism
spectrum.
We've
been
very
engaged
in
our
fight
against
autism
for
a
number
of
years.
I
For
various
years,
my
wife
has
chaired
the
Autism
Speaks
walk
this
year.
Our
fundraising
goal
is
four
hundred
fifty-three
thousand
dollars
and
we're
about
three
hundred
thousand
dollars,
so
we're
getting
close
to
our
goal
and
every
day
we
get
one
step
closer
to
providing
more
resources
and
more
support
for
families,
children,
caregivers
and
others
who
are
dealing
with
autism.
So
for
those
of
you
who
want
to
join
me,
I
will
be
out
there,
as
we
are
every
year
on.

the
country.

we

voter

demonstration

the
new

I
encourage
all
my
colleagues
that
living
in
South,
West
Philadelphia
part
of
my
district
to
come
out
and
learn
about
the
new
demonstration
