The Committee on Global Opportunities & Creative/Innovative Economy of the Council of the City of Philadelphia will hold a Public Hearing on Wednesday, February 19, 2020, at 10:00 AM, in Room 400, City Hall, to hear testimony on the following items:
200136 Resolution authorizing Council’s Committee on Global Opportunities and the Creative/Innovative Economy to hold public hearings on the state of Philadelphia’s fashion and design industry.
Immediately following the public hearing, a meeting of the Committee on Global Opportunities & Creative/Innovative Economy, open to the public, will be held to consider the action to be taken on the above listed items.
Copies of the foregoing items are available in the Office of the Chief Clerk of the Council, Room 402, City Hall.

my
colleagues
who
are
in
their
offices
watching
on
television
or
whatever
they're
doing
come
on
down
we're
going
to
get
ready
to
start
I
appreciate
everyone
being

I
will,

opening
statements,
kind
of
go
through
the
process
of
what
we're
doing.
And,
of
course
you
know,
congratulations,
they're,
successful,
Philadelphia,
Fashion
Week
all
right.
Thank
you
very

we're
going
to
start
the
hearing
on
the
resolution
regarding
the
fashion
and
garment
industry.
This
is
a
public
hearing
on
city
council
committee
on
global
opportunities
in
the
creative
innovative
economy.
The
purpose
of
this
public
hearing
is
to
obtain
testimony
on
resolution.
Two
zero
zero
one.
Three

at
this
time,
I'll
ask
the
clerk
to
read
the
title
of
the
resolution
resolution.

I'm
going
to
provide
a
opening
statement
and
then,
as
my
colleagues
come
in,
I'll
recognize
them
and
if
they
want
to
make
a
statement,
we'll
have
that
as
well.
Let
me
just
state
that
everything
is
being
recorded
by
a
stenographer.
There
are
four
cameras.
The
testimony
is
being
televised,
live
on
our
government
Channel.
It
is
recorded
and
videotaped
and
we
do
use
the
videotapes
to
further
the
goals
of
which
I
think
we're
all
here,
for
that
is
to
support
and
enhance
Philadelphia's
fashion
and
garment
industry.

The
Committee
on
global
and
opportunities
in
the
creative
innovative
economy
was
created
in
2011,
the
very
end
of
2011,
and
the
purpose
of
it
was
to
give
the
legislation
the
the
legislature
City
Council,
a
committee
that
specifically
dealt
with
the
topic
of
jobs
and
economic
engines
in
Philadelphia.
Regarding
the
creative,
innovative
economy,
we
started
with
phl
live
center
stage,
which
is
now
going
into
its
seventh
year,
which
is
a
music
platform
for
anyone
to
submit
music
and
their
submissions
are
judged
by
Grammy,
Award
winners,
Grammy
nominated
and
other
music
industry
leaders.
A
Thanks
to
the
generous
donations
of
many
of
our
private
businesses,
we've
been
able
to
give
sixty
six
thousand
dollars
out
to
the
various
winners,
along
with
thousands
of
dollars
worth
of
free
studio,
recording
time
and
other
things,
but
most
importantly,
an
opportunity
here
in
Philadelphia,
and
that's
really
what
we're
talking
about.
There
are
many
talented
people.

next
thing
that
happened
is
from
pH
L
live
center
stage,
a
music
industry
task
force
was
created
and
that
task
force
has
completed
its
report
and
I'm
happy
to
say
that
there
will
be
a
public
hearing
on
Thursday
March
12th
at
1:00
p.m.
for
them
to
testify
about
their
recommendations
and
what
we
can
do
to
make
our
city
a
more
vibrant,
Music
City.
A
One
of
their
recommendations,
of
course,
is
to
create
a
permanent
office
for
the
music
industry.
Another
committee
that
was
created
was
the
film
and
television
task
force.
They
are
completing
their
report.
They
will
then
testify
about
their
recommendations
and,
along
with
that,
there
are
other
initiatives
that
the
city
is
involved.
With.
This
hearing
really
came
about
through
the
conversation
with
Kevin
Parker
and
Carrie
Scott
of
the
Philadelphia
Fashion
Week.
They
have
been
very
good
about
coming
to
speak
with
me
about
what
they
do
and
how
we
could
be
helpful.

things
that
will
happen
is
that
task
force
will
have
a
set
period
of
time.
Usually
it's
a
year
could

longer
to
come
up
with
recommendations
and
with
that
there's,
of
course,
at
the
end
of
that
always
the
issue
of

fund
it
and
to
give
it
the
resources
it
needs,
like
everything
else.

I
personally
come
from
a
creative
and
fashion
background
and
have
experienced
firsthand
how
hard
it
is
for
a
student
or
young
professional
to
get
their
feet
in
the
door
or
simply
have
mentorship.
This
is
why
it's
extremely
personal
for
me
and
also
imperative
that
we
help
our
cities.
Industry
Philadelphia
has
so
much
wonderful
talent
and
we
are
yet
to
be
seen
as
a
large
fashion
hub
compared
to
other
cities.

support

only
us
but
the
future
generations
in
the
market,
they
will
see
how
far
we
can
grow
and
how
we
can
pivot
the
city
of
Philadelphia

what
a
few
amazing
chefs

food
industry,

now
it's

like

Philadelphia
has
fashion

retail

its
blood.

Retail
is
an
important
driver
for
tourism.
Shopping
is
one
of
the
top
two
things
that
people
do
when
they
travel
and
it
generates
millions
of
dollars
for
our
local
economy
every
year.
Fashion
and
retail
are
an
important
source
of
entry-level
jobs
that
with
hard
work,
can
be
a
career
path
in
management
or
even
opening
a
business
of
their
own
over
70%
of
Center
City
retailers
are
independence,
not
chains,
and
it's
this
local
flavor
that
gives
center
city
and
our
other
neighborhoods
the
unique
shopping
experience
we
love.
Local
fashion
is
hot
right
now.

Today's
consumers
want
to
have
a
connection
with
the
apparel
they
buy.
They
want
to
know
how
it
was
made
where
it
was
made
and
who's
selling
it.
They
want
to
be
able
to
customize
things
to
their
taste
and
they
want
a
high
level
of
customer
service.
Local
retailers
and
designers
are
more
able
to
source
and
design
better
for
their
clientele
because
they
know
them
so
well
and
I'm
not
talking
about
basic
demographics,
I
mean
they
know
their
customers
and
they
talk
with
them
regularly.
They
buy
for
them
and
they
design
for
them.

Philadelphia
is
brimming
with
local
designers
and
read
and
we
are
increasingly
taking
a
national
stage
because
of
it,
we've
had
multiple
local
retailers
featured
on
and
winning
Project
Runway
we've
had
retailers
such
as
Boyd's
and
Joan,
Shep
featured
and
the
pages
of
Women's
Wear
Daily,
which
is
the
Wall
Street
Journal
of
fashion.
We've
been
hailed
as
second
best
shopping
center
in
shopping
city
in
the
world
by
Conde
Nast
Traveler
magazine
as
a
founding
board
member
of
the
Philadelphia
Fashion
Incubator
I've
seen
the
talented
designers.

city
has
to
offer
I've
seen
them
evolve
as
they
expand
their
knowledge
of
the
industry
and
business
during
the
one-year
residency
that
the
incubator
provides.
Most
of
all
I've
seen
the
value
of
the
community,
helping
each
other,
retailers
like
Joan,
Shep
hosting
our
designers
for
a
critique
or
a
trunk,
show
designers,
mentoring,
each
other
and,
of
course,
the
camaraderie
and
celebration
when
everyone
comes
together
for
Philadelphia
Fashion
Week.

you

any

Okay,
so
let
me
ask
you,
as
a
panel
I
will
always
start
with
this.
There's
a
lot
of
great
things
about
Philadelphia
and
there's
a
lot
of
things.
We
really
need
to
work
on.
I
think
that's
'event
to
a
lot
of
folks.
But
what
do
you
find
most
frustrating
about
fashion
in
Philadelphia?
A
What
needs
to
be
done
because,
as
you
said,
I
think
in
the
minds
of
many
particularly
here
in
our
own
City
fashion
is
not
taken
seriously
for
the
economic
engine
and
change
agent,
that
it
is.
What
would
you
like
to
see
done
to
make
this
city
more
responsive
and
being
able
to
really
do
the
things
that
you
believe
we
can
do?
Yes,
so.

But
you
don't
see
it
a
lot
in
the
media.
If
you
do
it's
a
smaller
segment,
it's
just
not
focused
on
it
and
we've
seen
I
touched
a
little
bit
about
it
previously,
but
we've
seen
what
a
few
amazing
chefs
could
do
in
the
food
industry,
and
now
it's
all
over
in
national
magazines.
That
Philadelphia
is
the
place
to
be
if
you're,
a
foodie
and
I
would
love
to
see
that
with
fashion,
because
I
think
we
have
that
same
Drive,
if
not
more
in
in
that
regards.

I,
don't
see
that
level
of
industry
coming
back,
but
people
want
locally
made
locally
sourced
items
and
I
believe
that,
with
some
guidance,
I
think
there
there
are
people
out
there
doing
it
already
in
this
city
and
I
think
if
we
could
pull
our
resources
together,
I
think
there's
an
opportunity
for
more
of
that
happening
here.
I
also
think
that
you
know
a
lot
of
the
people
that
worked
in
the
industry
have
gone
away:
they've
either
gone
to
New,
York
or
or
they're
dead.
You
know,
and
so
I
think
we
need
to
start
seeding.

The
industry,
teaching
and
I
know
that
I
know
that
Saint
Hubert's
has
a
program
for
seamstresses
and
sewing
and
design.
We
need
to
be
able
to
guide
some
other
young
people
into
that
area
and
let
them
explore
it
not
not.
Every
child
needs
to
go
to
college.
There
are
great
trades
out
there
and
that's
one
of
the
skills
that
by
and
large
has
been
lost,
so
I
think
in
our
education
system.
We
also
need
to
funnel
the
future
talent
through
our
schools.

I've
heard
and
I
don't
personally
know,
I've
did
a
little
reading.
That
seems
to
support
the
idea
that
there's
movement
in
New,
York's
fashion,
industry,
their
garment
industry
and
possibly
a
search
for
another
location.
Another
City
can
any
of
you
comment
on
that.
If
not
we'll
go
to
another
panel,
that
that
can
do
that,
but
I
just
really
bring
it
up,
because
that's
one
of
the
issues
that
arise.
What
can
the
city
do
to
invite
or
attract
those
existing
manufacturers
and
other
companies
to
locate
here
in
our
city?

New
York
had
a
whole
program
of
not
only
incentives
but
education
for
their
designers,
and
it's
something
I
have
in
my
files.
I
could
get
it
to
you
in
terms
of
incentives
and
the
government,
the
city
being
able
to
attract
new
businesses.
I
think
we
could
put
a
road
show
together
and
go
to
other
cities
see
who's
there
in
New
York,
who
might
be
there
in
other
cities
that
would
be
interested
in
relocating
hiren.
Yes,
financial
incentives
will
probably
be
a
big
deal.

I'm
sorry
I
apologize
for
the
tardiness.
Do
you
have
any
examples
of
other
municipalities
that
have
provided
any
level
of
financial
incentives
to
be
able
to
attract
folks
from
the
industry
to
their
particular
City?
The
reason
that
I
think
that
my
colleague
is
is
probing
into
this
issue
is
because
you're
presenting
some
very
good
information,
it's
a
phenomenal
facts,
but
from
our
seat
on
municipal
government
there's
not
much.

But
if
we
don't
have
opportunities
for
employers
to
employ
them,
a
lot
of
it
will
require
entrepreneurship.
And,
while
that
is
a
phenomenal
model,
everybody's
not
built
to
be
an
entrepreneur.
So,
and
if
you
don't
know,
it's
not
a
big
deal
at
all,
but
from
the
perspective
that
I
think
we
sit
in,
we
just
want
to
be
able
to
figure
out.
How
can
we
support
the
industry
and
what
are
maybe
some
tangible
examples
out
there
of?
Why
will
somebody
want
to
go
to
New
York?
Besides
the
fact
that
is
well
populated
and
have
a
reputation?

Can't
answer
your
first
question
necessarily
without
a
little
more
research,
but
I
can
tell
you
that
what
bringing
manufacturing
back
looks
like
to
me,
like
I,
said,
are
these
niche
manufacturing?
Where
we're
not
talking
somebody,
the
size
of
a
Macy's
would
be
buying
from,
but
it's
small
batch
production
and
it
has
a
couple
of
advantages.
One:
it's
less
waste,
that's
a
big
thing
right
now:
sustainability
in
the
fashion
industry.
So
when
you're
doing
small
batch
production
many
times
you're
only
manufacturing
for
who
you
know
is
gonna,
be
buying
it.

would
just
say
that
one
of
the
things
that
we
will
look
to
do
is
to
establish
this
task
force
of
experts
to
put
your
heads
together
with
our
assistance
to
support.
We
know
you're
busy,
to
give
you
some
level
of
support,
as
as
you
do
the
research
as
we
look
at
best
practices
as
we
look
overseas
to
see
what
type
of
collaborations,
and,
of
course
you
know,
I
will
say
the
big
thing
at
the
end
of
the
day.
Is
this
everyone
fights
for
dollars?

dollar
dollars
are
not
always
spent
in
the
best
possible
manner,
but
often
loudest
gets
the
more
the
more
money
and
a
lot
of
times,
people
who
are
very,
very
confident
in
the
good
that
they
that
they
do
their
industry
and
their
work
are
very
modest
about
advocating
for
their
fair
share
of
the
dollars,
and
one
of
the
things
I
would
love
to
see.
Is
that
these
industries
that
are
so
important
get
to
get
a
little
more
aggressive
with
their
government
to
fund
the
things
that
really
make
a
difference?

starting
my
school
I
taught

Moore
College
of
Art
was
a
head
cutter

opera

Philadelphia's

Drexel
University

fashion

all
of
this
to
say,
I'm,
very
versed
in
the
dynamic
value
that
fashion
and
sewing
bring
to
this
city
and
the
specific
needs
of
young
designers
to
go
to
lasting
fashion
career
in
Philadelphia.
Instead
of
going
to
a
city
like
New
York,
currently,
Philadelphia
lacks
certain
resources
that
are
integral
to
both
fashion
business
startups
and
the
manufacturing
and
production
industry
resources
like
the
Council
of
Fashion
Designers
of
America
CFDA
in
New,
York
City
brings
startup
capital
manufacturing
subsidies,
education,
grants
and
mentorship
that
are
sponsored
at
the
state
and
city
levels.

The
grants,
part
of
the
public
and
private
fashion
manufacturing
initiative
go
to
small
businesses
and
manufacturers
that
make
and
design
clothes
in
the
city.
Funds
are
used
for
infrastructure,
upgrades
worker
training,
business
training
and
state-of-the-art
production
equipment.
Cities
like
New
York
understand
that
fashion
is
a
large
part
of
the
local
economy,
creating
180
thousand
jobs
with
eleven
billion
dollars
in
annual
wages
and
manufacturing
jobs
averaging
at
41
thousand
dollars
annually.

Philadelphia
already
has
a
rich
history
of
garment
production
and
with
such
close
proximity
to
New,
York
and
New
Jersey
can
again
be
a
large
contributor
to
the
growing
need
for
manufacturing
resources
as
an
educator
I'm,
particularly
interested
in
the
workforce,
development
and
small
business
training
programs
that
could
revamp
both
ends
of
the
ecosystem.
Through
education,
we
can
invest
into
small
biz.
This
is
an
workforce
training,
thus
quickly
activating
new
jobs
in
the
local
economy.

proposed
Philadelphia
fashion
and
garment
industry
task
force
will
organize
Philadelphia's
fashion
leaders
in
education,
styling
design,
manufacturing
marketing,
retail
event,
production
and
finance
towards
a
singular
goal
of
pooling
our
resources
and
creating
accessibility
to
our
designers
and
makers.
With
the
help
of
our
local
government,
I
believe
Philadelphia
can
again
be
a
leader
in
the
fashion
and
garment
production
industries.

I
am
the
executive
director

Philadelphia
Fashion
Incubator
I'm
here
this
morning
to
express
the
incubator,
support
of
the
Philadelphia
fashion
and
garment
industry
task
force.
The
incubators
mission
is
to
nurture
emerging
fashion,
entrepreneurs
from
Philadelphia
design,
schools
and
the
local
fashion
community
by
teaching
them
the
business
of
fashion
in
a
dynamic,
12-month
residency.
The
incubator
connects
designers
to
the
global
fashion
network
and
encourages
them
to
expand
and
retain
their
businesses
in
the
region.

Since
our
launch
in
2012,
the
incubator
has
graduated
over
40
designers
and
there
are
28
that
are
still
actively
in
business.
Our
initiative
has
positively
impacted
Philadelphia's,
apparelled,
manufacturing
and
retail
economy.
More
than
90
percent
of
our
designers
are
manufacturing
locally.
Each
designer
generates
work
for
over
15
people
in
the
community,
from
manufacturers
and
technical
designers
to
photographers
videographers
and
graphic
designers
to
printers
PR
specialists
and
accountants.
The
incubator
has
had
a
direct
impact
on
the
creative
economy
and
the
region's
economic
development.

have
been
in
the
national
spotlight,
including
Project,
Runway
and
style
to
rock

Show
and
Good
Morning
America
national
press
and
Forbes
Rolling
Stone,

WWD,
Entrepreneur

alumni
aim,

lotion
and

now

incubator

launched

years

alumni

hugely

resources

our

marketing

never
had
happened

students

college

need

that

where
the
city
of
Philadelphia

experience

comparatively
relatively

look

other
locations.

only
ever
been
here
in
this
city
as
far
as
building
something
from
the
ground
up,
but
Philadelphia's
been
a
wonderful
city
to
incubate
a
new
idea.
There's
lots
of
room
for
growth.
Rents
are
somewhat
affordable
and
there's
a
lot
of
people
that
are
looking
for
synergy
to
work
with
with
their
own
creative
endeavors,
so
I
loved
and
continue
to
love
building
my
business
here
in
Philadelphia
with
that
said,
I
think
because
there
is
so
much
room
to
grow.

Sometimes
we
lack
certain
resources
that
can
help
further
small
businesses
and
that's
not
just
to
say
where
we
just
need
money
and
funding

Think
it's
a
lot
more
about
mentorship,
accessibility
and
knowing
that,
like
today,

voice
towards
change
in
the
future.
So
you
know
I
think
my
biggest
takeaways
and
also
let
me
say
you
know
my
school.
We
create
entrepreneurs
as
well.
It's
not
only
am
I
an
entrepreneur,

surrounded
by
wonderful
entrepreneurs

think
that
watching
them
go
forward.

translate

transition

taught
through

mentorship

some

these
students
don't
have
access
to
the
finances
that
they
need,
even
just

startup

even
just

pay
for
their
own
education,

learn
these
skills
themselves.
So
you
know
for
them.
I
think
that
they
might
say
they
lack
some
of
the
knowledge
of
the
resources,
the
resources
that
are
out
there,
and
so
maybe
bringing
that
to
light
through
something
like
the
task
force
where
they
know
that.

That's
a
great
question
paid
internships
are
hard
because
a
lot
of
the
people,
the
small
businesses
that
need
the
help
are
also
in
financial
strain
themselves,
and
they
of
course
understand
that
they
have
to
compensate
people
that
are
no
longer
in
school,
and
so
that
can
be
difficult
and
a
lot
of
times.
Those
opportunities
are
found
in
places
very
close
by
like
New
York
City,
so
I
think
that
helping
small
business
owners
to
create
those
kinds
of
opportunities,
because
the
need
is
there
for
sure
and
the
opportunities
are
there
to
work
with
startup
designers.

It's
the
best
education
you
could
ever
have,
but
I
think
that
for
the
does
the
business
owners
it's
hard
to
afford
to
be
able
to
pay
interns
the
way
that
they
would.
Otherwise
they
might
just
hire
somebody
with
experience.
So
that's
that
sort
of
in-between
niche
that
an
intern
can
bring.
But
again,
if
it
comes
with
a
dollar
sign,
sometimes
designers
can't
afford
it.
So
one.

the
questions
we
will
ask
the
the
task
force
to
is
to
kind
of
prioritize
incentives.
For
example,
New
York
City
has
its
own
separate
from
the
state
film
tax
incentive,
we're
looking
at
a
Philadelphia
film
incentive,
but
the
issue
that
arises,
for
example,
with
pH
alive,
was:
is
it
the
money
or
is
the
free
student
recording
time
like
which
one
is
better?
We
kind
of
ended
up
splitting
the
difference
as
best
we
could,
and
you
know
so
incentive
wise
is
it
for
the
business,
the
small
business?

talked
about
grants,
how
important
is
incentivizing
paid
internships
in
a
city
like
ours
with
so
many
young
people
graduating
and
being
attracted
here?
It's

question
I'm

ask

we'll
ask

the
task
force
to
consider
and
then

wonderful
things
that

funding

incentive

district

incentive

to

their

occupy,
but
fashion
industry
related,

they
lost
that
and
in
2015
they
started
doing
these
small
fellowships
for
designers.

too
only
had
in
their
brand
made
in
New
York
City
and
if
they
give
15
million
dollars
to
that
incentive.

phone

got

support
from
a
staff
member,
and
so
just
my
basic
understanding
is
that
this
is
a
combination
of
mostly
Phillip
of
philanthropy
dollars,
as
well
as
some
government
dollars.

could

expert
opinion?

worked

manufacturing

talk

building

small

manufacturing

Philadelphia

designers
pockets
because
they
can
afford
to
manufacture
locally
here
and
then
you

jump-starting
the
economy,

think
small
focused
amounts.

we
start

turn

something

grows
mass
over

funding
is
coming

industry

biggest
players,

companies

that
being

close

New

don't
want
to
try
to

New
York's

to
be
Philadelphia

heart

that

going

possibly
land
in
our
manufacturing
efforts.

long
history
in

in

garment

when

was
a
small
business
lending

work
in

part
of
my
Philadelphia
that
was
called
garment
square
because
of
the
bonded
500
and
other
large
manufacturers
that
were
in
Philadelphia,
especially
you
know,
world
war
ii
and
philip
was
known
as
the
workplace
for
the
world
because
of
all
the
manufacturing
occurred
in
Philadelphia.

Has
there
been
any
initiative
to
try
to
capture
that
type
of
historical
perspective
and
then
connect
that
with
some
of
the
people
who
are
doing
design
under
orbit
in
a
creative
space
now
and
make
that
linkage?
There's
been
similar
efforts
on
the
music
side,
where
we
try
to
make
the
connections
between
the
history
we've
had
in
the
city
of
adelphia,
from
American
Bandstand
to
Marion,
Anderson
and
John
Coltrane.

But
has
there
been
a
similar
type
of
connection
about
the
history,
because
I
don't
think
a
lot
of
people
really
are
cognizant
of
the
strong
manufacturing
history
that
we
have
here
in
the
city
of
Philadelphia.
Even
if
you
look
in
parts
of
off
Sastry
and
queens
village,
where
we
had
a
number
of
boutique
tailors,
that
was
a
large
part
of
that
small
business
community,
which
is
now
snow.
It's
really
starting
to
shrink
because
of
the
changes
in
the
industry
and
also
changes
in
this
industry
as
a
whole.

Rachel
Ford,
so
that's
a
fantastic
question
as
well.
I
think
a
lot
of
designers
are
aware
of
the
history
of
Philadelphia
of
being
a
former
manufacturing
hub
and
there
is
a
Renaissance
happening
about
bringing
small-batch
back,
bringing
some
manufacturing
back.
Mostly
that
happens
through
necessity.
Small
designers
can't
afford
the
minimums
to
produce
overseas,
so
the
beauty
of
small
business
is
its
sustainable
and
local
by
nature.

So,
with
all
that
said,
the
customer
now
is
becoming
privy
to
you
know
similar
to
the
slow
food
movement,
the
slow
fashion
movement
and
wanting
to
buy
locally
wanting
to
support
sustainable
companies
and
loving
to
buy
into
the
story
that
goes
along
with
those
companies.
So
you
know,
as
far
as
the
viability
of
that
you
know
it
does
boil
down
again
I
believe
into
education.

can
get
that
going
and
I
think
with
the
city's
help,
we
can
really
focus
those
dollars
in
an
effective
way
that
will
have
results
quickly.
Then
we
can
start
talking
about.
You
know
matching
that
beautiful
history
and
seeing
that
no,
it
won't
come
back.
The
same
way
like
elisa
stated,
but
I
do
think
it
will
come
back
in
Philadelphia's
current
way
and
in
a
way
that
really
people
need
and
not
just
Philly
needs.
New
York
needs
this
as
well.

only
education,
but
we
are

we
open
up

classrooms

just
people

want

courses
to

learn

we
also
open
our
space
with
that's
full
of
industrial
equipment
and
professional
know-how
to
designers
that
want
to
start
but
can't,
afford
rent
and
need
access
to
professional
equipment.

started

business

Philadelphia

skin

trade
schools
in
Philadelphia
at
the
grade
school
level
that
are
diving
into
sewing,
specifically

forgetting
the
name

it
right

I've
toured
there
to
talk
about
their
curriculum
and
to
see
the
level
of
skill
and
bringing
that
information
to
designers
in
Philadelphia
that
are
looking
for
talented
hands.
So
it's
only
been
you
know
one
visit
with
one
school,
but
it
was
very
encouraging
to
see
that
that
is
a
model
that
exists
and
it's
it's
you
know
alive
and
well.

with
and
again
I'll
get

who
these
people
works.
I
need
to
remember
their
names,
but
the
people
in
charge
that
we're
writing
the
curriculums
very
passionate
people
that
are
really
taking
care
of
these
kids
and
trying
to
land
them
in
positions
that
are
more
based
on
trade
based
on
their
interest
in
that
skill
and
not
necessarily
placing
them
in
colleges
but
into
the
the
trade.
So
I
think
that
that
kind
of
curriculum
could
be
again
duplicated
and
built
out
and
there
it's
part
of
their
school's
curriculum
to
place.

students
in
internships,
unpaid
by
nature,
because
they're
in
high
school
there's
a
lot
of
red
tape,
of
course,
with
protecting
the
students
and
making
sure
they're
placed
in
proper
situations
and
not
every
designer
if
they
are
working
out
of
their
home.

not
necessarily
a
proper
situation.
So
again
the
idea
of
co-working
a
place,
that's
professional
and
can
meet
the
standards
to
that
kind
of
connection
is
something
that
they
were
very
interested
in
as
well.
So
yes,
if
that
does
exist
and
I
think
it's
fantastic.

in
business

28

years
ago
we
opened

Street
and
I
was
born
in
Philadelphia

received
my
Bachelor
of
Science
at
Tech,
stop
Philly
textile
design,
which
is
now
Jefferson
University
prior
to
opening
steel.

worked
at
just
outside

city
as
a
design
director

an
import
company.

I

collaborate

get
things

and

believe
that

force

a
lot

help

city

Philadelphia.

city

a
sustainable
designer,

I
use
99%
of
all
of
my
my
fabrics

everything
I

out

a
whole
nother
up
cycle
line
and
I
found
it

hard
to
work
with
the
factories
in
Philadelphia.
They
wanted
bigger
quantities.
They
were
only
interested
in
urban
outfitters
manufacturing
and
it
was
very
frustrating
I
currently
so
in
Allentown
Pennsylvania.

sellers,
so
it's
almost
like
having

production
manager
that
you're
not
that's,

in
your
space
that
so
it's
not
at
a
cost

her
husband
does
all

cutting
and
it's
just
like
it,
keeps

small
and
they
go
out
and
they
work
with
small
showers.

be
the
perfect
type
of
business

Philadelphia
to
have

batch

low
cost

living
relative
to
the
other
major
cities
attract
young
talent

City
exempt
small
businesses
with
less
than
$100,000
in
gross
receipts
from
paying
the
business
income
receipts
tax
and
as

this
year,
the
city
will
no
longer
require
that
they
file
a
return

the
Commerce
Department.

office

business
development
has
just
assigned
a
Business
Development
Manager
to
be
the
creek

lead
the
creative
economy.

know
this

industry

is
growing
here

Philadelphia
fashion

segment

to

of
Labor
Statistics,
there
are
over
6,000
people
working
in
textile

and
apparel
manufacturing
in
Philadelphia.

technical
school
fashion
design
course
takes
their
students
from
Varman
construction
to
apparel
merchandising
commerce
remains
dedicated
to
supporting
all
businesses
throughout
the
city
and
in
all
sectors,
and
we
especially
look
forward

to

alongside
the
fashion
and
design
industry
to
support
its
continued

shows

trade

week-long

well-organised
can
assist

city
as
a
tourism
destination
to
improve

image

to
attract
new
visitors.
There
is
a
direct
correlation
between
tourism,
destinations
and
fashion
events,
which
has
a
positive
economic
event,
impact

hospitality
industry
and
the
special
events
industry

the
Joint
Economic
Committee
of
the
United
States
Congress,
the
largest
fashion
event
in
the
United
States
New
York
City's
Fashion
Week
generates
close
to

million

small

banker

also
an
attorney

was
attuned
to
some
of
those
challenges,
but
the
cash
flow
dynamic
is
very
important
in
reference
to
payment
and
humanity.
Affairs,
and
my
assumption
was
I
was
very
similar
to
any
small
business,
the
same
issues
that
small
businesses
would
have
in
the
fashion
and
design
industry.

Why
didn't
I
move
to
New
York
for
fashion?
My
answer
has
always
been
because
there
is
so
much
talent
here
in
Philadelphia
as
a
consultant,
strategic
brand
advisor
and
professor
providing
direction,
and
education
and
collection
launching
branding
expansion
to
retail
markets
and
career
development.
I
have
found
what
many
of
our
small
businesses
and
students
in
the
fashion
industry
need
here
are
more
resources
locally.

afford
fabric

supplies
needed
for
school
projects,
just
as
there
are
many
business
owners
that
could
see
greater
growth
with
more
localized
resources
in
manufacturing
and
a
fabric
sourcing,

the
business
of
fashion.

city
of
Philadelphia
has
a
groundbreaking
opportunity,
with
the
development
of
the
Philadelphia
fashion
and
garment
industry

force
to
collectively
strengthen

industry

resource

sustain
existing

the
talent
that
we
have
here

Philadelphia,
Bergdorf
Goodman
in
particular,
has
purchased
and
sold
and
also
gave
a
window
display
to
a
local
designer
named
iris
iris
Bonner
of
these
pink
lips,
which
is
a
very
successful
designer
who
was
just
many
celebrities
from
cardi
B
to
Billy
Porter
to
mary
j
blige
and
has
been
featured
in
Elle
and
vogue,
and
a
number
of
international
publications
and
I
feel
as
though
the
retail
in
the
city
of
Philadelphia
is
missing.
That
connection
and
I
feel
like.

take
full
advantage
of
providing
the
opportunities
to
our
local
designers
by
making
that
connection
as
it
relates
to
pop-up
shops
or
trunk,
shows,
and
we've
also
recently
partnered
with
Lauren
Taylor.

going

year-long
partnership
where
we're
going
to
do
trunk
shows
and
in-store
fashion,
shows
to
highlight
and
sell
the
designers
wares
as
well,

not
only
that,
but
we're
also
partnering
with
fashion
district
Philadelphia

every
other
month.
