How not to Photograph a Total Solar Eclipse
Brad Templeton
The best plan for photographing a total solar eclipse is just to watch it. But if you've seen a couple and have the itch to photograph, the best plan is to watch it while your computer photographs it. It's the highest dynamic range photographic target there is, and no picture can capture it, but you can capture something. Brad Templeton, who has seen 6 total eclipses finally got some decent photographs after 3 tries, and good ones after 5 and will share techniques and advice if you have the itch for 2024, or just want to hear some travel astrophotography stories. one

frustrating
things
in
going
to
eclipse
is

actually
run
into.
Is

Where
were
you
and
they'll
tell
me
they
were
outside
the
line
of
totality
and
they
saw

eclipse
and
they
thought
they
had
seen
the
eclipse
and
it's
really
the
difference
between
having
sex
and
kissing
a
relative.
It's

total
solar,
eclipses
and
partial
solar
eclipses
shouldn't
even
have
the
same
name
because
they
are
so
different
and
the
total
solar
eclipse
is
really
I.
Think
I
will

The
most
dramatic
natural
phenomena
you
can
see
on
the
earth,
maybe
you'll
argue
some
artificial
phenomena
is
more
spectacular,
but
I
think
it
beats
out
the
Grand
Canyon
or
anything
else
of
that
nature
in
terms
of
a
natural
site
that
you
can
see
on
this
planet.
So
that
has
made.
Of
course,
many
people
want
to
travel.
The
world
see
eclipses
and
foolishly
photograph
them,
because
no
photograph
of
a
solar
eclipse
looks
like
a
solar
eclipse.

So
of
the
few
who
are
still
here,
who
are
visible,
I
mean
how
many
of
you
have
seen
a
total
solar
eclipse.
Have
you
so
and
I
can't
tell
if
Nicole
is
putting
his
hand
up
or
not,
but
Francesco

okay

I
can't
see
Nicole,
but
anyway,
a
couple
of
you
have
and
a
few
Larry

a
couple

You
have
not

you're

a
club

it's
very
difficult
to
explain
to
the
other
people
what
it's
like,
but
it
is
the
highest
contrast.

Natural
phenomena,
so
you've
got
the
highest
dynamic
range,
which
makes
a
particular
photographic,
Challenge,
and
but
it
is
incredibly
Dynamic
and
Incredibly
dramatic.
So
what
I'll
do
is
I
will
start
I'll
tell
my
story
of
eclipses
I've
been
to
and
what
I
learned
from
them
and
I'll
do
it
in
chronological
order
and
get
to
my
photos
that
I
the
best
I've
done
and
each
time
of
course,
I
do
a
bit
better.

the
time
of
the
end,
then
I'll
show
some

and
talk
a
bit
about
the
software
that
people
typically
use
when
they're
doing
this,
so
I
am
going
to
bring

go
all

You
should
all
see
me
in

always
find
that
being
a

sort

disconnecting,
and
so
it's
much
more
personal.

There
is
some.
There
are
things
you
will
see
at
the
edge
of
the
path
that
you
won't
see
on
the
center
line.
However,
the
mistake
was
that
this
particular
long
duration
Eclipse,
was
the
wrong
Eclipse
to
do
that
with
I'm
jealous
of
the
people
who
went
to
the
hybrid
eclipse
in
the
Northern
Australia
in
the
Kimberly
a
few
months
ago,
because
they
were
seeing
a
very
short
Eclipse.

I
have
no
pictures
of
that
Eclipse
because
I
I
didn't
know
it
yet.
But
I
was
worked
out.
This
advice,
which
is,
if
you
have
never
seen
one
before
watch
it
watch
it
with
your
Naked
Eyes,
watch
it
with
a
pair
of
binoculars,
maybe
Glenn
through
a
telescope
but
mostly
watch
it
and
don't
attempt
to
photograph
it.
As
I've
said,
no
photograph
will
look
like
it,
and
so
the
key
issue
is
experience.
It
observe
it,
but
don't
try
and
photograph
it
so
and
I
guess
now.

By
the
way,
a
lot
of
people
also
find
eclipses
to
be
great
excuses
for
travel.
Of
course
they
happen
randomly
in
the
world
and
you
get
taken
sometimes
to
rather
unusual
and
interesting
places.
You
would
never
have
gone
to
before
on
an
eclipse
Expedition
and
in
fact
it
also
means
that
people
lead
guided
groups.
If
that's
how
you
prefer
to
travel
into
these
weird
places,
and
so
that's
an
interesting
experience.

So
there
are
Clips
to
us,
who've
been
to
even
a
dozen
or
more
some
people
have
the
some
of
the
record
holders
have
been
to
even
larger
numbers
of
eclipses,
but
part
of
it
is
because
of
the
tourism
you
get
to
do
along
with
it.
So
after
you've
seen
one
Eclipse
I
still
recommend
you
don't
do
too
much
with
the
second
and
maybe
after
a
couple
you
can
start
thinking
about
photographing
it.
However,
as
I'm
going
to
tell
you,
you
will
not
photograph
it,
your
computer
will
photograph
it.

You
should,
throughout
your
Eclipse
viewing
history
always
watch
the
eclipse.
It's
worth
it
don't
waste.
Any
of
that
time,
if
you
can
avoid
it
and
let
your
computer
do
the
work
and
let
your
telescope
do
the
work,
and
that
is
how
I
do
that,
although
I
have
occasionally
been
imperfect
and
people
fall
for
the
traps.

You
haven't
seen
the
moon,
but
the
combination
of
the
two,
but
also
don't
ignore
the
experience
in
the
people,
particularly
if
you're
photographing,
by
the
way,
because
I'll
tell
you
one
of
the
better
types
of
Photography
to
do
here
is
a
video
of
the
crowd
not
of
the
eclipse
I
mean
you
can
make
a
video
of
the
eclipse,
of
course,
but
it
won't
look
like
an
eclipse
focus
on
the
people
and
the
experience
and
a
bunch
of
other
aspects.
So
my
second
Eclipse
I
did
a
cruise,
and
this
is
pretty
common.

There
are
cruise
ships
a
lot
of
cruise
ships
that
will
be
delegated
to
doing
eclipses,
I
suspect
some
cruise
ships
will
be
available
and
maybe
still
be
available
to
go
off
the
western
coast
of
Mexico
for
the
coming
eclipse
of
2024.
You
probably
all
know
that
next
April
I
think
there
will
be
a
total
eclipse
which
crosses
the
United.
States
begins
in
Mazatlan
moves
over
Chihuahua
at
Durango
and
cherawa
enters
Texas
and
then
goes
up
until
it
hits
Niagara
Falls
just
south
of
Toronto
and
Crosses
a
little
bit
more
to
the
east
through
Canada.

You
know
it
can
be
a
pleasant
experience
to
have
weight
uniformed
waiters
serving
you
creme
brulee,
while
watching
the
eclipse
compared
to
being
out
in
the
harsh
territory
of
Mongolia
or
other
places.
So
that's
an
attraction.
There's
a
it's!
It's
interesting
to
have
a
cruise
where
everyone
on
board
is
sort
of
an
astronomer.
I'll,
explain
this
a
little
bit
more,
but
at
least
interested
in
scientific
things
they're
there
for
something
of
that
sort.
So
it's
sort
of
it
can
be
like
a
star
party.

However,
there
are
some
downsides
to
a
cruise.
You
will
not
photograph
I,
believe
you
should
not
photograph
on
a
cruise
I
attempted
to.
It
was
an
error.
Obviously
the
cruise
ship
is
not
stable,
so
you
don't
want
you
now.
A
lot
of
eclipse.
Exposures
are
as
little
as
you
know,
a
500th
of
a
second,
so
you
can
certainly
do
those
on
a
cruise
ship.
You
can
go
all
the
way
down
to
about
a
30th
of
a
second
on
the
cruise
ship
and
get
some
good
exposures.

However,
you
obviously
can't
track
the
sun
with
a
clock.
Drive
on
a
cruise
ship
and
I
think
that's
also
very
important,
because
it
should
be
your
computer
that
is
photographing
the
eclipse.
This
was
also
my
first
cruise.
You
can
see
all
the
people
wearing
those
little
mylar
glasses
that
they
always
hand
out
now.
Many
of
the
people
on
here
are
very,
very
amateur
astronomers.
They
don't
really
know
anything
about
astronomy.

In
fact,
if
you're
good
at
this
I
could
probably
do
this,
you
can
probably
get
a
job
as
a
guide
on
one
of
these
ships,
if
you,
if
you
know
your
astronomy
and
your
eclipses,
because
they
do
need
that
and
a
lot
of
people
need
it
here
are
myself
and
Catherine.
As
you
can
tell
this
is
some
years
ago,
this
is
1990,
eight
and
I
had
more
hair,
and
it
was
more
colorful
and
I
was
going
to
talk
about
my
first
eclipse
in
Mexico.

The
thing
that's
most
prominent
invisible
during
an
eclipse
but
I
made
up
these
t-shirts,
saying
I
went
to
Mexico
for
Corona
and
I
also
made
buttons
and
I
had
a
button
making
machine
for
my
business
and
so
I
sold
buttons
to
other
people
on
the
eclipse
exploration,
I
was,
and
I
made
enough
to
pay
for
my
Eclipse
Expedition
selling
buttons.
That
said,
I
went
to
Mexico
for
Corona
was
quite
popular
I.
Think
the
other
thing
that
helped
sell
them
was
how
I
priced
them,
which
at
the
time
there
was
a
lot
of
inflation.

So
it
was
2.5
times
10
to
the
fourth
pesos.
For
one
button
or
three
times
ten,
their
fifth
anyway
expressing
it
in
in
scientific
notation,
seemed
to
really
make
the
crowd
think
that
they
should
also
like
to
buy
them
and
anyway
so
I
I
still
have
that
t-shirt.
I'm,
not
sure
it
fits
me
anymore
and
you
can
see
someone's
got
their
astroscan.
This
is,
of
course,
how
you
take
a
photograph
of
yourself
with
a
partial

project
the
partial
eclipse
onto
a
screen,
and
this
is
not
my
asteriskan,
but
but
it's
someone
else's
projecting
the
partial
phase
and
a
picture
of
us
at
the
eclipse,
and
it's
about
the
the
only
way
you
can
really
get
a
decent
photo
of
that
and
I'll
explain
later
and
I
took
a
photo
with
my
camera.
Here
it
is,
isn't
it
fantastic
yeah
no
photographs
taken
with
ordinary
cameras
will
rarely
get
anything
like
more
than
this.
You
see
nothing
except
the
eclipse.

You
barely
see
the
eclipse,
both
from
the
size
and
the
foam
length.
This
is
actually
taken
with
one
of
the
world's
first
consumer
digital
cameras.
This
camera
was
actually
pretty
high-end
for
the
time
it
was.
It
had
just
been
given
to
me
by
my
employees,
which
means
I
paid
for
it
I'm
not
quite
sure
how
that
worked
as
a
Christmas
gift,
but
here
we
were,
and
it
was
1024
by
768
and
I
held
it
up.
This
was
a
four
and
a
half
minute
Eclipse.

There
was
a
little
bit
of
luxury
to
spend
some
time
with
it,
but
I
got
a
completely
useless
photo
that
doesn't
capture
any
of
it.
Nonetheless,
for
19.99,
just
a
year
later,
a
another
eclipse
crossed
through
Great
Britain
down
through
Central
Europe
over
Romania
and
into
the
Black
Sea
and
I,
went
on
to
the
Black
Sea,
and
this
is
a
different
cruise
ship.
This
one
is
a
former
Russian
Icebreaker.
You
can't
really
see
that
from
the
photo,
but
the
decks
are
curved.

The
everyone
setting
up
their
telescopes
on
the
deck
and
I
went
and
bought
a
little
Mead,

was
the
kind

thing
you
could
fit
into
luggage
and
took
some
photos
with
it

crowds

eclipses.

couple
ago.
There

pretty
high-end
ship
and
it
was
in
the
Caribbean.
This
is
not.
It
was
1998.
It
was
in
Caribbean
and
on
the
ship
with
us
were
quite
a
few
interesting
people.
Freeman
Dyson
was
there.
I
got
to
have
dinner
with
him
almost
every
night,
because
I
had
met
him
into
him
before
so
Jill
Tarter
was
on
the
ship
and
I.

did
a
scuba
trip
in
the
in
the
Caribbean
and
we
were
talking
about
and
the
movie
contact
came
up
among
the
crowd
on
the
boat
and

bunch

ships
do
have

needed
here
in
this

as
far

you
can

was
actually
needed,

tracked

place
on
the
line
that
will
have
Chris
Kai's
and
will
even
go
at
full
speed
to

of
the
world's
first
hydrogen
bomb
explosion.

nukes

the
location
of
Ivy,
Mike
and

Don't
know

you

see
my

my

can
sort
of
see
like
a
shark,
took
a
bite
out
of
the
eye,
the
island,
that's
where

hydrogen
bomb
was.
It
was
exploded
on
the
ground
and
now
there's
no
island
where
it
was
these
other
things
you
see
are
other
nuclear
explosions
that
were
done.

The
residents
of
this
island
eventually
said:
hey,
stop
nuking
our
Island,
please,
and
the
United
States
had
to
pay
them
a
fortune
and
replace
all
the
soil
and
a
lot
of
other
things.
They
took
all
the
radioactive
soil
that
they
removed
and
put
it
into
this
concrete
dump
and
they
covered
it
up
with
concrete.
We
brought
a
geiger
counter
with
us.
There
was
no
detectable
serious
radiation,
although
apparently
we
were
told
we
shouldn't
eat
too
many
of
the
coconuts
and
they
did
give
us
some
nice
coconut
milk.

The
instructions
said
fly
over
the
runway
at
a
low
altitude
to
remind
the
people
camping
on
it
that
you
might
want
to
use
it
and,
however,
this
day
because
of
the
eclipse
people,
new
planes
were
coming,
and
so
we
got
to
see
that
Eclipse
we
had
there's
another
nuclear
Cloud.
There
was
a
lot
of
War
to
treat
us
on
the
island,
the
allies
and
Americans,
mostly
just
left
behind,
and
it's
sitting
there
resting.
So
you
get
a
little
bit
of
tour
of
that
and
we
set
up
a
little
tent
camp.

photography
and
a
few
other.
This
is
over

on
the

my

Landon
was
performing
a
series
of
experiments
where
he
had
an
array
of
cameras.
He
was
using
in
eclipses
and
he
was
trying
to
see
if
he
could
find
any
Vulcan
asteroids.

Those
are
asteroids
inside
the
orbit
of
mercury
and
those
asteroids
cannot
be
seen,
except
during
a
total
eclipse
or
with
it's
actually
difficult
for
space
telescopes
to
see
them.
The
Moon
is
really
your
ideal
sunshade,
and
so
he
was
taking
lots
of
photographs
during
eclipses
of
the
area
around
the
Sun
to
look
to
see
if
we
could
and
he
could.
Basically,
unfortunately,
his
experiment
was
negative,
so
he
could
rule
out
that
there
were
no
Vulcan
asteroids
above
a
certain
size
because
they
would
have
shown
up
in
his
photographs.

Since
then,
further
exploration
has
indeed
found
that
there
is
nothing
there,
nothing
that
of
any
significant
size
orbiting
inside
the
orbit
of
mercury,
but
we
were
able
to
do
a
little
bit
of
actual
science
while
doing
here's
a
panorama
of
the
scene
and
the
telescope's
getting
ready,
beautiful
location.
Obviously,
sadly,
clouds
for
the
first
I
mean
here's
another
bad
attempt.
This
is
what
you
get
when
you
try
and
photograph
an
eclipse.

Now
my
goal
in
most
of
my
astrophotography
and
I
I
I'm,
not
a
you,
know,
a
nebulous
star
cluster
guy
I,
like
moving
things
and
dynamic
things.
Eclipse
is
obviously
being
able
to
do
comets
and
a
bunch
of
other
things,
but
I
think
it's
pretty
important
to
try
and
give
context
to
them
the
photograph
you
take
of
just
the
eclipse.
Well,
you
can
do
a
good
job
and
you
want
to
do
that.

Every
direction
and
I'll
show
you
that
better
in
another
photograph
that
I
have
coming
up,
and
here's
me
taking
that
photograph
or
no
not
taking
that
photograph,
trying
to
take
a
panorama
again
being
a
bad
boy.
This
was
also
a
I
think
it
was
a
four
and
a
half
minute,
Eclipse

so
you
have
a
little
bit
more
time
to
waste
time.
Photography

you

second
exposure,
you
actually
can
see
the
Earth
Shine
On
The
Moon,
with
the
sun's
Corona
behind
it,
and
so
some
people
like
to
even
do
hdrs
and
and
put
the
Earth
shine
moon
in
there
to
show
it
is
the
moon.
But
of
course
this
is
actually
a
very
bad
thing.
The
photo
bad
way
to
photograph
it
because
if
you
have
seen
a
total
eclipse,
what
you
learn
is,
as
I
said,
the
most
high
dynamic
range
high
contrast
phenomena
in
nature.

What
you
learn
is
this:
the
Moon
looks
like
the
blackest
hole
in
space
you've
ever
seen.
It's
like
someone
ripped
a
piece
out
of
the
sky,
it's
just
so
incredibly
dramatic.
So
it
doesn't
look
anything
like
this
at
all.
The
absence
of
the
moon
is
what's
interesting
and
only
by
taking
a
four
second
exposure.
Will
you
see
that
yeah?
So
this
is
the
diamond
ring
as
this
Eclipse
began,
we
did
have
clouds,
but,
as
you
can
see,
with
light
clouds,
an
eclipse
is
as
bright
as
the
full
moon.

It
is
possible
to
see
it
even
through
light
clouds.
Fortunately,
these
clouds
only
were
there
for
about
the
15
seconds
of
second
contact,
which
is
second
and
third
contact
are
where
most
of
the
action
is
where
most
of
the
drama
and
Beauty
are
I
mean
there's
plenty
in
the
middle
too,
but
so
I
have
got
this
well
interesting,
but
not
ideal.

other
hand,
the
clouds
are
gone,
and
this
was
at
the
time
I
think
the
Eclipse

I
had
taken
that
I
I
liked
the
most
I
put
this
one
as
a
poster
on
the
wall.
It
says
capturing
the
diamond
ring
effect,
which,
for
the
few
of
you
who
may
not
know
what
it
is,
is
that
limb
of
the
Sun
at
the
end
or
beginning
before
the
eclipse
is
total.
A
tiny
sliver
of
sun
is
visible.
It's
dramatically
brighter
than
everything
else.

Also
in
the
South
Pacific
and
my
friends
and
I
went
to
French
Polynesia,
and
that
is,
we
went
to
the
island
of
how
and
again
we
went
there
because
there
was
a
long,
12
000
foot
runway
on.
How
guess
why?
It's
because
they
nuke
these
islands
too,
so
it's
very
nice
that
they've
gone
a
nuke
to
all
these
islands
and
built
Big
runways
on
them,
because
it
means
you
can
go
to
them.

In
fact,
this
Runway
is
so
long
that
it's
one
of
the
space
shuttles
emergency,
backup
runways
in
the
South
Pacific,
because
you
don't
have
that
many
12
000
foot
runways
sitting
around
that
you
know
pretty
much
anything
can
land
on
I.
Don't
think
this
picture
is
too
exciting.
But
let's
take
a
look
I'm
going
to
look
at
a
series
of
these.

We,
we
did
get
unfortunately,
a
fair
bit
of
cloud
for
this
eclipse,
and
this
was
very
sad
because
two
miles
away
from
us,
they
saw
it
perfectly
with
no
clouds,
but
we
had
picked
this
site.
And
what
can
you
do?
We
got
some
clouds,
so
I've
got
some
nice
pictures
of
it.
Here
is

so

my

see

have

cruise

know,
do
other
things
fun
things,
but
the
main
goal
was
to
see
the
eclipse
on
land
and
I
mentioned
shouldn't.
Seeing
eclipses
in
the
air
and
seeing
them
on
cruise
ships.

them

I
think
is
the
best
experience
you
get
the
context
of
standing.
You
get
this
sense
of
you're
standing
on
a
planet,
and
these
bodies
are
lining
up
in
space
in
this
amazing
way
and
being
connected
to
your
planet
is
actually
a
part
of
that
now.
The
other
things
you
see
when
you're
on
land
are
things
well.
Things
like
this
360
degree,
sunrise
in
every
direction,
which
is
kind
of
cool,
and
it's
not
that
hard
to
perceive.

see
the
animals,
the
wildlife
react
to
the
eclipse
they
will
start
acting
as
though
it
is
becoming
night
and
sunshine
and
they'll
start
going
to
sleep
or
bedding
down.
They
don't
really
understand.
What's
going
on
so
you
get
to
you,
know,
sort
of
it's
it's
there
isn't
an
astronomical
event.
Obviously
that's
like
this
in
terms
of
giving
you
that
that
dramatic
view
of
how
the
world
is
working
so
anyway,
that's
a
360
degree
view
of
it.
You
can
see
how
dark
it
is.
Obviously,
though,
the
cameras
tend
to
adjust.
Fair
balance.

I
was
going
to
show
you,
oh
back
in
that
eclipse
on
the
cruise
ship.
One
of
the
things
I
did
was
set
up
a
camera
to
take
a
picture,
every
20
seconds,
I,
guess
and
so
I
just
have
still
photos
of
it,
and
it
was
a
good
demonstration
of
just
how
much
the
light
changes
when
you
look
at
that
photos,
I'll,
try
and
pull
those
up
for
you
later.

If
you
have
I
will
skip
to
the
most
recent
Eclipse
that
most
of
us
saw,
which
is
the
2017
Eclipse,
where
I
went
to
first
to
a
town
called
Weezer
Idaho
and
then
stayed
in
the
last
Airbnb
available
in
the
path
of
totality,
a
really
crazy,
wacky
guy
hosting
us.
Although
everyone
decided
they
didn't
want
to
see
it
from
his
house,
and
so
we
went
across
the
river
into
Oregon
to
a
town
called
Annex
Oregon
annexed
to
Weezer,
I,
guess
and
set
up
there
in
a
schoolyard.

As
you
can
see,
a
lot
of
other
people
have
come
to
the
schoolyard,
and
here
we
see
the
rig
that
I
will
use
for
this.
My
best
and
most
recent
set
of
eclipse
photography,
I
now
own
a
nice
little
120,
April
refractor.
So
that's
a
900
millimeter
refractor
as
I
said:
that's
a
good
focal
length,
maybe
a
little
shorter
is
better
and
because
of
that,
so
that's
on
a
you
know,
a
nice
clock,
Drive
equatorial
Mount,
as
you
would
like
to
have
it.

It
is-
was
interesting,
of
course,
to
Polar
align
it
because
well,
I
did
end
up
going
there.
The
night
before
and
setting
it
up
and
just
taking
the
risk
that
I
could
leave
a
telescope
in
a
field
somewhat
expensive
telescope
in
a
field,
and
nobody
would
steal
it
before
I
came
in
in
the
early
morning
to
actually
begin
the
days
observing
because
I
wasn't
sleeping
there
and
so
I
put
it
up
there
and
did
very
rough
polar
alignment.
Then
the
truth
is
you
don't
need
Super,
accurate,
polar
alignment?

Your
exposures
are
all
short,
as
I
said,
the
longest
you'd
ever
do
is
four
seconds.
Usually
you
shouldn't
do
much
more
than
one
or
two
seconds.
So
the
only
reason
for
your
polar
alignment
is
so
your
computer
can
do
the
photography.
As
I've
said
you
get
your
computer,
so
that
means
you
set
everything
up,
everything's
aligned
and
it
just
runs
and,
of
course,
your
clock.
Drive
does
the
job.

Now
here
you
see,
I've
got
one
of
those
old
Merlin
mounts
which
will
do
again
very
simple
tracking,
and
that
is,
as
it
turns
out
almost
good
enough.
It
didn't
do
quite
a
perfect
job,
mostly
because
it's
pretty
flimsy
and
it's
easy
to
bump
in,
but
otherwise
these
mounts
and
you
can,
you
I'm
sure,
you've
seen
them
they're
sold
for
us.

know
Milky
Way
photos
things
like
that:
they're
fairly
inexpensive
and
on
it
I've
put
a
400
millimeter
lens
and
a
rental
Canon
camera,
so
I
used
to
shoot,
Canon
I
now
shoot.
Sony
and
I
have
put
this
400
millimeter
lens
I
still
own.
So
that's
a
little
too
short
I
think
you
know.
As
I
say
you
want
something
more
five.
Six
hundred
the
900
is
pretty
good
too,
and
it's
so
it's
tracking
the
Sun
as
well,
and
it's
got
just
a
handmade
solar
filter
on
it.

But
this
this
camera
is
okay,
but
it's
only
through
a
400
millimeter
lens
and
I'll
show
you
one
of
the
programs
in
a
little
bit
that
that
I
have
used
for
several
of
these
eclipses
and
over
on
the
right.
My
Sony
camera
is
pretty
hard
to
control,
so
I
controlled
it
with
a
program
called
Eclipse
Droid,
which
is
an
Android
program
and
it
is
able
to
if
you
have
an
Android
phone,
that
emits
infrared
light.

So
it
has
a
basically
a
TV
remote
control,
infrared
transmitter
in
it,
which
some
do
you
can
control
the
camera
that
way,
but
you
can't
control
it
nearly
as
well
as
controlling
it.
Over
USB
now,
Sony
cameras
are
controllable
over
USB.
They
are
controllable
over
or
Wi-Fi
actually,
but
nobody,
the
people
who
write
this
software
have
done
the
work
to
try
and
work
with
those
drivers
and
there
are
no
drivers
for
Android.
So
that's
this
particular
program
is
Android.

The
Windows
and
Mac
programs
I
actually
haven't
checked
the
Mac
programs
because
I
don't
have
a
Mac,
but
if
you
are
shooting
with
a
Mac,
maybe
you
can
find
something
to
control
Sony,
depending
on
what
you
have.
If
you
don't
have
a
camera,
you
can
control,
you
can
do
what
I
did,
which
is
you
rent
one
I
rented
this
from
the
various
camera
body
rental
places
you
can
also
rent
lenses.

for
just
one
day
or
two
days,
shooting
it's
not
that
expensive
to
rent
the
gear
that
you
want
because
you're,
never
you
know
you're
not
going
to
do
this
every
day
and
the
nice
thing
is
that
you
they
give
you
a
little
box

Fedex
and
I
actually
put
that
I
dropped
this
off
at
a
FedEx
Depot
on
the
way
out
of
this
Idaho

So
I
returned
it
the
very
same
day.
I
used
it
so
I
didn't
have
to
rent
it

many

we've

We've

controlling

man
in
the
car
to
provide

a
few

set

this
experience
to
provide.
So
you
see
three
cameras
already,
and
here
is
a
diamond
ring
through
the
one,
the
April
refractor.

Actually,
the
only
defect
in
this
particular
image
is
that
the
limb
of
the
sun
is
so
bright
and
that
when
we
look
at
the
red
zone
of
the
chromosphere
next
to
the
diamond
ring-
and
this
is
the
diamond
ring
at
a
reasonably
decent
Diamond
exposure-
you
actually
see
fringes
because
the
center
is
Overexposed.
The
diamond
ring
always
is
Overexposed
and
one
thing
we'll
learn
as
we
go
through
this
is.
There
is
no
one
exposure
for
an
eclipse.
Every
exposure
is
different.
Every
exposure
reveals
something
else
because
of
the
incredible
dynamic
range
here.

So
what
I
tend
to
do
when
I'm
shooting
these
is
shoot
a
very
large
bracket,
and
that
means
all
the
way
from
two
seconds
to
an
eight
thousandth
of
a
second
there's
something
interesting
at
every
one
of
those
different
exposures
and
you
combine
them
together
in
an
HDR.
That's
the
only
way
to
get
something
that
even
approximates
what
a
solar
eclipse
looks
like
and
again
it
doesn't
that
black
circle
is
just
it's
so
black,
it's
it's!
You
know
you've
heard
of
vanta
black.
It
looks
blacker
than
that.

Not
because
it
is,
it
is
the
moon
with
Earth
shine,
but
because
it
is
surrounded
by
the
corona,
the
sun,
which
is
about
the
brightness
of
the
full
moon.
Here's
another
great
diamond
ring
exposure
showing
a
lot
of
coronal
detail
but
really
capturing
the
diamond
ring.
The
diamond
ring
at
Third.
Contact
is
the
one
that
most
people
see.

So
there
are
two
diamond
rings
of
course,
but
most
people
are
being
paranoid
at
the
beginning
of
the
eclipse
or,
as
the
second
contact
appears,
they're
wearing
their
solar,
glasses
or
they've
got
their
solar
filters
between
them
and
the
Sun
and
they're
not
really
sure
when
it's
time
to
actually
start
looking
at
the
sun
with
your
naked
eye.
So
the
answer
is,
you
can
probably
look
sooner
than
you
think
and
a
little
bit.
Everyone
is
paranoid
and
giving
people
advice
saying.
Oh
my
God.
Never
look
at
the
song.

wait
until
after
the
the
diamond
ring
is
over
the
diamond
ring.
Is
the
prettiest
part
of
the
eclipse.
Do
not
miss
the
diamond
ring,
don't
miss
the
second
contact
diamond
ring.
You
will
not
miss
the
Third
Contact
diamond
ring
because
you'll
be
staring
at
it
and
then
suddenly,
this
gleaming
bright
light
will
suddenly
beam
out
at
you,
and
your
eyes
will
actually
tell
you
very
quickly,
okay,
it's
time
to
stop
looking
at
this.
That's
why
the
first
part
is
harder,
because
there's
nothing
telling
you
it's
time
to
finally
look
at
it.

is
an
HDR
image.
I
think
this
is
one
of
my
best
and
you
can
tell
it's
an
HDR
because
it's
able
to
expose
these
incredibly
bright
prominences
along
with
deep
details
in
the
corona.
As
I
said,
this
is
900
millimeters
and
we
get
that
quite
nicely
in
the
frame.
There
is
coronal
detail
out
beyond
that,
but
this
focal
length
for
this
type
of
exposure
is
working
very
well
here,
we'll
see
some
close-ups
of
very
short
exposures
and
see
what
kind
of
great
detail
you
can
get
in
prominences.

when
I
got
these
photos
and
started
looking
at
them,
I
was
very
upset
for
a
second,
because
if
you
can
see
the
largest
prominence,
that's
up
in
the
sort
of
upper
right
hand
corner
you
see
this
black
spot
next
to
the
prominence
I
assume
you
can
all
see
that
and
I
thought.
Oh
crap
I
had
dust
on
my
sensor
and
then
I
noticed
everybody
else
had
the
same
dust
on
their
sensor.

it's
right
behind
it.
Yeah
it
looks
like
it's
behind
it
and
it's
it's
an
actual
coronal
hole.
It's
not
dust
on
my
sensor.

you

see,
the
limb
of
the
sun
is
just
starting
to
peek
out
from
behind
the
moon.

shoot

crazy

Contact,
because

half

there
is
something

dramatic,

the
Moon
is
slowly
uncovering

Sun.
So,
as
you
can
see

ring
of
the
chromosphere,
the
outer
well,

inner
atmosphere
of
the
sun,
it's
not
the
corona
is
peeking
out
the
actual
Sun
Photosphere
is
not
yet
peeking
out.
That's
what
the
diamond
ring
will
be.

you
first
see
the
first
bit
of
photosphere
you
can.

contacts

eclipse

boring.

eclipse

is
when
the
moon
is
completely
clear
and
you've
just
got
the
sun
again
and
two
and
three
are
the
start
and
end
of
the
total
eclipse.
So
the
Moon
is
slowly.
The
dragon
is
eating
the
sun
slowly
going
over.

It
you're
very
excited
because
you've
seen
partial
eclipses
before
and
the
moon
always
missed
and
went
off
to
the
side.
Now
it's
right
going
right
down
its
throat
and
right
down
the
center
and
slowly
it
comes
until
this
instant.
The
diamond
ring
is
the
last
glimpse
of
the
atmosphere
of
the
Sun
or
the
surface
of
the
Sun,
the
Photosphere,
and
then
the
total
eclipse
begins
at
what
is
called
second
contact,
and
then
you
have
anywhere
from
one
30
seconds
to
seven.

Minutes
is
about
as
long
as
it
can
be
of
totality
and
then
Third
Contact
comes
with
its
own
diamond
ring
as
the
moon,
and
this
is
Third
Contact
here,
so
the
Moon
is
slowly
sliding
across
the
Sun
from
left
to
right
and
it
is
at
least
in
this
orientation,
and
it
is
now
revealing
now.
This
is
a
very
fast
exposure
eye.

one's,
probably
you
know
in
the
range
of
two
thousands
to
four
thousandth
of
a
second
and
so,
and
that's
at
F,

I
think
it
is,
and
so,
even
though,

the
eye
looking
at

it
would
look
like

bright

spot

the
center
would
be
overwhelming,

making

sphere
to
your
eye

Seeing
here
it's
because
the
camera
is
short,
exposure

pulling
that
out.

naked

about
as
bright
as
the

perfectly
lookable
with
your

cannot

tiny
dot.
So
all
the
partial
phases
you
should
use
eclipse
glasses,
but
no,
in
fact
there
are
people
who
do
not
get
that
because
there's
so
much
Eclipse
part
well
paranoia
put
out
about
you
know
protect
your
eyes.

course,
you
won't
see
the
diamond
ring
with
eclipse
glasses,
so
if
you're
on,
but
most
people
are
not
alone,
most
people
are
in
a
crowd
and
the
noises
of
the
crowd
or
you
have
an
eclipse
guide,
that's

pretty
common
and
I
have
even
if
I
am
alone,
as
we'll
see
in
my
video
I
have
got
the
computer,
that's
doing
the
photograph.
It's
also
programmed
to
talk
to
me,
and
it
says
it
counts
down
as
we're
getting
closer
and
closer
to
the
magic
moment.

you
know
even
without
looking
what's
going
on.
However,
typically,
what
you'll
do
is
in
if
you're
looking
through
eclipse,
glasses
and
you're
on
your
own,
you
would
see
the
sliver
of
the
sun
we'll
actually
see
a
video
of
this.
The
sliver
of
the
sun
getting
smaller
and
smaller
and
smaller
you'll
see
a
phenomena
called
Bailey's
beads,
which
is
interesting,
but
not
spectacular.

you
see,
the
mountains
of
the
Moon
move
and
wiggle
around
the
surface
as
the
sun
is
being
now
eclipsed
by
the
the
terrain
of
the
lunar
surface
and
then
finally,
the
diamond
ring
when
there's
just
one
small
dot
of
photosphere
left
what
you
see
here,
it's
actually
now
it's
an
arc
of
photosphere.
So
this
is
actually
a
little
bit
late
in
the
diamond.

hidden

clouds

sky

as
bright

star

out
far

Sun

brighter

moon,

even
brighter

prominences

But
you
see
all
of
them
with
your
eye,
because
your
eye
is
this
amazing
instrument
that
can
do
things
that
no
single
frame

Photography
can
do.

far
as
I
know,
I'm
the
only
I'm
the
only
person
I've
ever
seen
do
this,
but
in
fact
it
is
as
far
as
I
can
tell
I'm,
not
blind
perfectly
safe.
To
look
at
the
Sun
and
put
your
thumb
over
the
diamond
ring
once
it
gets
too
bright
to
look
at,
and
you
will
then
find
that
you
get
15
seconds
more
Eclipse.
You
see
these
other
things
because
the
diamond
ring,
while
very
bright,
is
not
so
bright
as
to
wash
them
out
to
your
eyes.

So
if
you're
so
desperate
and
I
am
you
will
be
for
more
Eclipse,
even
if
you've
seen
a
lot
of
it,
you
guys
never
see
too
much,
and
you
can
put
your
thumb
over
the
diamond
ring
for
as
much
as
30
seconds.

have
done.

I
mean
just
don't
look
at
the
Photosphere

the
other
thing
you
want
to
do
is

think
you
want
to
have
some
video

third
contact

I've

they're
very

moving
events.

can
capture

HDR

nothing
you'd
ever
photograph

capturing
it
with
very
short

HDR

So
it's
calculated
all
that
for
your
location
automatically
and
then
I
have
put
a
script
into
it
and
you
can
sort
of
see
the
no
we're
not
where
we're
not
seeing.

script
is
one
I,
just
grabbed
which
I
happen
to
have,
but
usually
you'll
express
the
time
as
second
contact,
Plus
or
minus
a
second
or
a
half.

and
then
you
can
say
how
long

wait

camera,
because
you
can
control
multiple
cameras
and
then
take
a
shutter
with
this
exposure.
The
aperture
usually,
is
not
relevant

you're
usually
shooting

telescope,

you

shots

fortunately

little
thing

ability

control

not
cloudies,
it
was
very
annoying

Argentinian
Patagonia,
where
the
eclipse
was

Sunset
over
the
Andes,
incredible
apparently
high
risk

cloud

it's
on
the
horizon,
of
course,
because
you
know
just
you
know
how
it
works

but
it
wasn't,
it
was
clear,
and
so
those
people
got
to
see
that
amazing
Eclipse,
as
you
say,
just
as
the
Moon
is
dramatic

it's

rise.
This
was

moon
set

Easter

other

that
people
saw
that
particular
eclipse
and
many
people
had
photos
with
the
Moa
statues
with
the
eclipse
combined
with
them.
So
that's
a
rare
opportunity
to
combine
an
eclipse
with
things
on
the
ground
because

brightness.

is
very
difficult
to
do
that.
You
would
need
to
do
some
HDR
tricks
in
order
to
make
that
happen.
As
I
mentioned
earlier,
a
shorter
eclipse
is
more
spectacular,
but
it's
shorter.

things
I
told
you
about
the
Bailey
speeds.

people
like
to
do
this
I
own
some
I've.
Never
managed
to
use
them,
they
will
put
on
dark
adaption
glasses,
so
you
can
buy
sort
of
red
glasses
that
will
help
you
dark,
adapt
your
eyes.
Some
people
use
these
just
even
they're,
going
to
go
inside
when
they're
observing,
and
so
it's
been
suggested
that
to
wear
those
and
or
close
your
eyes
just
before
totality,
and
then
just
open
up
right
at
the
diamond
ring
that
you
would
have
all
the
benefits
of
dark
adaption,
and
so
that
could
be
pretty
cool.

themselves

film

duration
is
right

shot
of
the
totality

you
know
today
the
world
of
digital
cameras.

it's

just
Photoshop
combining
so
the
people
who
are
taking
those
photos.
They
stick
around
to
Fourth
contact,

everyone

is
just

hard
to
describe
it's

off

then
I've
always
tried
to
get
them

cruise
ships

willing

is

eclipse

Most

know
we're
going
to
have
an
annular
eclipse
of
the
Sun
in
October
of
this
year
that
Eclipse
will
cross
over
Central
Oregon
south
of
Eugene.
It
goes
over.
Crater
Lake
then
crosses
along
Central
United
States,
a
path
not
too
far
from
the
path
of
the
2017
Total
Eclipse,
an
annular
Eclipse.

you
don't
know
what
that
is,
it's
an
eclipse
where
the
Moon
is
too
far
away
or
the
sun's
too
close,
and
so
the
moon
does
not
completely
cover
the
Sun
and
you
get
a
ring,
and
so
it
is
just
a
partial
eclipse.
It's
a
cool
partial
eclipse.
You'll
get
a
lot
of
those
effects
of
things
darkening
and
some
of
those
other
things.
But
it's
you
know:

did
go
to
see
the
animated,
Eclipse.

something

First,
before
I
talk
about
the
aneur
eclipse,
but
someone
early
on
mentioned,
seeing
the
transit
of
Venus.
So
this
is
a
photograph
and
maybe
you've
never
seen

of
the
2004
Transit
Venus
shot
from
Stoney
Lake
Ontario.
Now
I
went
there
because
the
Venus
would
be
in
transit
at
Sunrise,
most
people.
They
think
I
want
to
observe
the
entire
Transit.

therefore
I'm
going
to
go
somewhere
where
the
transit
takes
place
entirely
in
the
daytime.

watch
it
through

decided
the
interesting
Quest
would

to
see

Transit

Venus

the
first
human
beings
ever
to
see

Transit
of
Venus

naked
eye

people
did
go
see,
transit
to
Venus
in
the
the
the
previous
ones
were
over
a
century
ago,
Mason
and
Dixon
famously
went
to
travel
to
see
a
transvest
Magellan
I
did
one
of
his
voyages
in
order
to
catch
a
Transit
of
Venus.

were
much
more
interested
in
them
back
then
they
would
always
go
to
see
the
entire
Transit
and
to
measure
what
was
going
on
very
relatively
with
someone
deliberative
and
then
the
other
people
didn't
know
there
was
a
Transylvania,
so

seen
it

but
they
wouldn't
have
known
what
they
were
looking
at

to
look
at

I
found

very
hazy
spot
where
it's
possible
for
me
to
look
at
the
Sun
at

eye

saw
it
through
projection
telescope.

with

eclipse

or
some
kind

landmark,

Bridge,
or
something
like
that,
if
it
were
going
over
here,
that
might
be
something
you'll
do

sure
Crater
Lake
will
see
some
interesting
action.

annual
Clips
will
be
too
high
in
the
sky
to
probably
combine
it,
I
think
and
here's
another
thing.

weird

still

then

eventually
produce

image

dynamic

live
in
the
path
like
you

somewhere
in
Ohio
or
the
different
places
the
path
will
go
through.
There
is
a
great
temptation
to
do
it
from
your
own
house.
Certainly
it's
easier
to
get
your
gear
set
up
and
to
test
it
and
do
all
those
dry
runs
you're.
Just
taking
your
risk
of
more
cloud.
Clouds
are
a
weird
thing
in
eclipses
I've
had
a
lot
of
good
luck.

never
had
an
eclipse
entirely
blocked
by
Cloud
I've
had
I
had
the
one
Eclipse
where
we
only
got
15
seconds
of
it,
but
that
was
still
pretty
dramatic.
It's
also
interesting
because
the
Moon
blocking
the
sun
changes,
the
weather,
and
so
the
weather
patterns
become
different
and
sometimes
clouds
will
grow
up
and
then
they'll
shrink
down
again
because
of
the
way
that
the
air
is
cooling
because
it
does
actually
get
noticeably
cooler
as
you
get
towards
totality.

my
only
other
comment
about
you
know
our
plans
where
we
I
think
we
made
the
reservations
a
few
months
ago
and
it
was
hard
to
find
you
know
not
ridiculously
priced
hotel
rooms,
then
so
do
it
now,
if

temptation

reserve
places
in
Texas
or
wherever
you
know
this
is
the
time
to
look
at
it.

we
might
be
smoked
out
from
the
wildfires
that
year
they're
driving

be
clouded

was

smoked
out.

was
a
lot
of
smoke
in
the
air
that
morning,
but
as
a
partial
eclipse
began,

off
for

just
trying

through
light

season
pretty

eclipse

less
likely
to
get
smoke
from
the
Western
fires

April

got

time

that
smoke.

I,

think
people
will
worry
about
that
this
year.

April
is
not
a
typical
time
to
have
a
hurricane
coming
in
off
the
Gulf
of
Mexico,
so
you're,
okay,
but
it
is
a
time
when
rain
can
happen,
but
no
southern
Texas
is
in
the
United
States
and
Canada.
The
best
cloud
forecast
there's
a
guy
up
in
Winnipeg
who
publishes
for
every
Eclipse
detail
crop
forecasts
and
you
can
go
look
at
them.

But
Durango
is
your
winner
in
terms
of
the
best
chance
of
seeing
it
doesn't
mean
it's
a
guarantee,
but
now
Durango
is
a
little
harder
to
get
to
than
Mazatlan.
There's
lots
of
flights
to
miles
of
that,
and
but
probably
the
hotels
are,
are
booked
in
these
things.
If
you're
ready
for
camping
in
Mexico,
though
I'm
sure
you
can
find
somewhere
to
park
here,
Park
your
vehicle
in
your
telescope.

So
the
truth
is
there
is
a
strong
Temptation
and
good
advice
to
say
sleep
in
the
path
of
totality,
because
nothing
will
stop
you
from
being
in
the
path
of
totality.
If
you
do
that,
but
you
can
sleep
outside
the
path
of
Italian
pay,
a
great
deal
less.
You
will
have
to
deal
with
the
traffic
on
that
day
and
in
some
cases
I
know
up
in
that
area
of
Oregon.
There
was
quite
a
bit
of
traffic,
Bend
and
and
area
north
of
it
in
the
center
line.

had
huge
amounts
of
traffic,
much
less
traffic
in
the
Willamette
Valley,
but
that
had
a
higher
Cloud
chance,
although
it
was
clear
there
and
so
people
saw
them.
The
nice
thing
about
the
Willamette
Valley
is
of
course,
interstate
running
right
through
it,
so
lots
of
capacity
to
clear
people
out
Bend.
Of
course,
just
the
State
Highway
I
haven't
actually
looked
at
the
maps
of
the
Texas
areas.
But
when
you
do
pick
where
you're
going
to
go,
look
at
the
highway
map
and
say
will
I
be
able
to
move.

you
sleep
outside
the
path
of
totality,
but
you
get
up
at
early
in
the
morning
and
you
start
trekking

think
you
will
make
it
into
the
path
of
totality
to
your
site
and
have
time

have
time
to
pull
or
align
a
telescope
on
the
stars,
but
you
can
polar
align
most
telescopes
on
well
on
the
sun.

can

be

dramatic

wonderful
place.

closest
place

here
is
about
five
and
a
half
hours
along
I-80
near
Winnemucca.

have
any

annual
Eclipse
won't
actually
generate.

was
funny,
though
I
was
last
week.
I
was
in
Utah
and
I
stayed
in
a
little
RV
Park,
which
had
cabins
with
RV
pedestals.

can
charge
your
electric
car,
because
I
was
an
area
where
there's
no
electric
charging
to
be
found
wrote
an
article
for
Forbes
about
that
published
it.
This
morning
the
and
this
RV
park
was
like
they.
They
were
wearing
Eclipse
annual
Eclipse
T-shirts.

had
brochures
and
posters,
I
mean
they
were
super
into
it.
The
whole
it's
a
little
tiny
village,
but
they're
super
into
the
fact
that
the
annual
eclipse
is
gonna
and
on
your
eclipses
have
a
much
wider
path,
usually
and
total
ones,
but
there
was-
and
they
said
oh
yeah
we're
totally
sold
out
and
everyone
is
around-
is
totally
sold
out
for
the
on
your
Clips.

that
tells
me
actually
that
the
2017
Eclipse
generated
enough
interest,
that
a
bunch
of
people
think
an
annular
is
worth
traveling
somewhere
for
it
ain't,
but
if
you've
never
seen
one
I
I
mean
I
think
you'd
enjoy
it.

think
it's
cool.
It's
a
it's,
definitely
a
different
astronomical
phenomena.
It's
just
it's
nothing
in
comparison
to
the
real
thing,
so
yeah,
but
Winnemucca
is
your
shortest
drive.
