Introduction to Astro Pixel Processor
Rich Klein
Astro Pixel Processor is a complete deep sky image processing application with several innovative and useful features. The software can be used for calibration, registration, normalization and integration as well as some final processing such as gradient and light pollution removal, RGB combine, color calibration, non-linear stretching and others. A major plus for beginners is that it provides a clear, linear workflow with a shallow learning curve, and the default settings on almost all of the built-in tools work very well, allowing even inexperienced Astrophotographers to produce very good images.
I'll introduce Astro Pixel Processor by processing a one-shot color image from start to finish, using APP and two external tools (GIMP and Topaz AI Denoise).

It
seems
that
likes
to
do
everything
himself.
For
example,

you
poke
around
on
the
app
forums
you'll
see
somebody
asked
him
hey.
Can
you
make
a
plug-in
for
blur
exterminator,
that's
a
pretty
cool
tool.

Mosaic
capability,
Advanced
Data
normalization
I'll
show
it
as
an
example
of
that
drizzle
support,
I,
don't
use
drizzle,
who
cares
Advanced
integration
and
stack
engine,
including
a
variety
of
outlier
rejection
filters
and
you
can
make
rejected
normalization
Maps,
which
can
be
interesting
a
bunch
of
batch
tools
if
you
want
to
work
on
a
lot
of
frames.
At
the
same
time,
a
rather
nice
light
pollution
ingredient
removal
tool
analogous
to
dbe,
but
did
that
different?

There's
a
selective,
color
tool,
which
is
analogous
to
pixel
math
to
selectively,
adjust
the
color
of
your
image
and
boost
saturation
of
luminance

is
kind
of
like
what
you'd
expect
and

unique

in

algorithm.

stream,
which
has
hydrogen

then
recombine

which
is
nice,
beginning

If

images
without
Flats,
it
tries
to
compute
what
the
vignetting
is
and
then
subtract
it
out.

is
supposed
to
have
conventional
normalization,
the
middle
one,
with
the
advanced
normalization
that
app
does,

then
this
one
is
with
app
is
normalization
plus
multi-band
blending,
and
these
are
normalization
weight
maps
and

more
uniform
they
are
supposedly
the
better
okay.
So
that's
all
nice,
but
why
should
you
use
this?
And
this
is
where
I'm
targeting
this
again
towards
people
getting
started
in
the
hobby.

astrophotographers
get
started
incrementally
they
start
with
a
DSLR
and
they
start
using
freeware
programs
like
backyard
EOS,
deep
Sky,
stacker
and
Photoshop,
or
they
generate
images
that
way.
I
I
started
with
a
an
old
thousand
month
Mount,
you
know,
but
I
still
was
able
to
stack
things
together
using
those
tools.
So
app
is
a
logical
and
straightforward
step
for
that.
