Dennis Wiss - Veterans' Best Practices Working Group - St. Charles County Government, MO
A
My
name
is
Dennis
Wis
I
served
in
the
Marine
Corps
for
four
years.
I
was
a
helicopter
mechanic
on
two
different
types
of
helicopters.
I
was
a
collateral
Duty
inspector
I
washed
dishes
in
the
chow
hall
stood
guard
duty
did
a
lot
of
kind
of
military
things.
I
joined
the
Marine
Corps
after
a
bunch
of
us
had
gone
and
seen
apocalypse
now
and
there's
a
lot
of
very
dramatic
helicopter
scenes
in
that
movie.
A
I
kind
of
got
hooked
on
helicopters
and
decided
I
wanted
to
work
on
helicopters
and
the
Marine
Corps
seemed
like
a
good
way
to
be
able
to
do
that.
My
basic
military
operation,
specialty
was
a
helicopter
mechanic
started
off
on
twin
rotor.
Ch-46
sea
knight,
then
was
moved
up
to
the
ch-53
echo
super
steep
sea
stallion.
A
heavy-lift
helicopter
I
was
a
flight
line
supervisor
in
charge
of
a
group
of
mechanics.
We
worked.
A
The
night
shift
did
a
lot
of
heavy
maintenance
after
the
aircraft
had
gone
flying
we'd
fix
anything
that
might
have
broken
on
them.
I
am
the
airport
director
at
st.
Charles
County
smart
field
airport,
we're
out
on
highway
94
east
of
town.
It's
about
a
350-acre
facility
got
about
17
buildings
that
I
and
my
maintenance
are
responsible
for.
We've
got
over
a
hundred
tenants
over
120
based
aircraft,
and
you
know
for
a
little
small
general
aviation
airport
we're
pretty
busy.
We
stay
pretty
busy.
The
airplanes
fly
a
lot.
A
We
have
a
lot
of
aircraft
flying
in
from
out
of
town,
so
it's
kind
of
like
the
Marine
Corps.
It's
it's
hard
work.
We
stay
busy
all
the
time,
but
it's
fun
too
so
I
enjoy
it.
The
main
organization
I'm
with
right
now,
of
course,
is
the
st.
Charles,
County
Veterans,
best
practices
working
group.
We,
we
are
a
group
of
veterans.
A
The
County
Council
adopted
an
ordinance
about
a
year
year
and
a
half
ago
to
recognize
veterans
in
the
county,
as
well
as
to
try
and
attract
veterans
into
the
county
both
to
work
and
to
live
in
the
county.
I've
been
with
the
county
for
about
two
and
a
half
years
now,
and
this
job
gave
me
the
opportunity
to
move
back
to
st.
Louis
and
st.
Charles.
I
grew
up
in
st.
Louis.
Oh,
give
me
a
chance
to
come
back
home.
St.
A
Charles
County,
obviously
is
a
huge
geographic
area,
so
it
takes
a
lot
of
people
to
run
it
and
just
I
think
everybody
has
the
common
goal
of
making
the
county
run
to
the
best
of
its
ability.
Kind
of
goes
back
to
the
military.
You
do
the
best
you
can
and
I
see
that
with
a
lot
of
the
county
employees
just
pushing
forward
and
trying
to
get
the
job
done.
