From YouTube: Pelle Braendgaard // An Ethereum Interview Series
Description
We sat down with Pelle Braendgaard, uPort Technical Lead at Consensys, to speak about Ethereum, uPort, and identity on the blockchain. This series focuses on trying to explain Ethereum to a non-technical audience.
A
A
I'm
pelle
bran
guard
I
am
the
lead
mobile
developer
for
you,
port
and
Newport
is
a
identity
system.
It's
a
it's
a
decentralized
identity
system,
it's
a
passport
that
you
control.
So
the
question.
The
question
is:
who
are
you
and
rather
than
asking
a
bunch
of
other
people
who
you
are?
Which
is
what,
which
is
why
you
bring
your
ID
with
you
all
the
time?
A
So
when
you
go
to
a
bank,
you
bring
your
I
national
ID
with
you
when
you
enter
border,
you
bring
your
ID
with
you,
and
these
are
all
documents
issued
by
someone
else.
But
who
knows
you
more
than
you
I
mean
you
you
are.
You
are
really
the
person
who
knows
who
you
are
where
you
live
and
all
of
those
kinds
of
things.
So
we
think
that
your
identity
should
be
controlled
by
you.
Now
then,
you
can
have
third
parties
like
financial
institutions
of
government
agencies.
A
They
can
go
in
and
attest
that
what
you're
saying
is
correct.
So
we
provide
a
framework
where
you
can
go
in
and
manage
your
identity
and
other
people
can
go
in
and
a
test
that
you
are,
who
you
actually?
Who
you
say
you
are
it's
a
place
where
you
can
go
in
and
create
financial
applications
that
run
in
a
trust
lyst
way?
A
So
you
don't
have
the
need
for
legions
of
different
financial
institutions
to
go
in
and
and
manage
manage
the
parts
of
a
transaction
so,
for
example,
as
part
of
getting
a
mortgage
it
made
as
an
end
user.
You
just
go
and
use
sign.
Some
paperwork
go
through
an
application,
and
then
you
get
the
mortgage.
The
money
gets
paid
to
to
the
to
the
seller,
and
then
you
pay
every
month,
but
behind
the
scenes,
there's
a
lot
of
different
institutions
lot
of
things
going
on.
A
So
it's
a
kind
of
a
new
way
of
a
new
way
of
creating
financial
financial
applications.
More
than
just
payments,
I
think
your
average
user
may
not
necessarily
know
that
they're
going
to
be
using
etherium
for
your
average
very
average
thing.
It'll
just
be
a
network
just
like
the
internet.
Like
now
like
15
years
ago,
everyone
you're
like
internet
was
this
new
thing:
I'm
going
to
go,
use
the
internet,
but
now
people
don't
say
they're
going
to
use
internet
you're
using
Facebook
you're
using
whatsapp
you're
using
Instagram.
A
All
of
those
kinds
of
things
and
I
think
it
will
be
like
that
as
well
with
etherium
people,
don't
necessarily
need
to
understand
how
it
works,
but
there'll
be
a
lot
of
different
applications
on
top
of
it
that
they
will
be
using
well.
Identity
is
going
to
be
an
interesting
one,
because
that's
a
key
for
allowing
traditional
financial
institutions
to
go
in
and
offer
services
on
the
etherium
and
there's
obviously
going
to
be
lots
of
interesting
financial
applications.
But
I
think
I
think,
identity
having
an
identity
that
you
manage.
A
There
are
various
kinds
of
public
registries,
for
example,
that
already
on
a
theorem,
and
if
you
have
an
identity
system
on
top
of
it,
you
can
start
creating
creating
public
registries
for
all
kinds
of
all
kinds
of
things
like
there
are
people
who
are
using
that
for
like
in
the
wine
industry
and
power
and
all
kinds
of
all
kinds
of
areas
that
that
may
seem
small,
but
are
quite
important
to
discern
certain
areas.
They
can
all
work
together.
A
Well,
bitcoin
is
a
I
mean
it's
it's
essentially,
a
value,
transfer,
transfer
system
and
I
still
I
still
believe
that
bitcoin
is
an
important
system
for
value
transfer.
But
if
you
want
to
do
anything
more
complex
than
that,
it's
hard
to
do
it
on
Bitcoin
and
it's
not
clean,
and
it's
not
done
necessarily
in
in
the
clean,
transparent
way.
So
there
lots
of
people
doing
all
kinds
of
things,
including
smart
contracts,
on
top
of
the
Bitcoin
network.
A
But
it's
all
essentially
a
giant
hack
if
you
will
wear
with
etherium
if
you're
miss
designed
/
for
this
design
to
go
in
and
create
application.
So
now
you
can,
you
can
go
in
and
create
applications
on
the
etherium
without
worrying
about
about
support
for
some
particular
little
sub
project
on
top
of
Bitcoin
the
developments
quite
far
ahead,
so
we
actually
have
a
working
working
version
of
it.
A
So
if
you
want
to
log
into
a
a
financial
application
like
a
trading
system
like
gnosis,
which
is
which
is
another
project
on
the
etherium,
you
can
go
in
and
sign
up
and
it
presents
a
QR
code
and
you
just
scan
that
code
using
the
app
and
authorize
that
you
want
to
give
this
information
to
go.
Gnosis
nagano
sis
knows
who
you
are
and
using
the
same
app.
You
can
now
interact
with
the
with
the
application,
so
you
can
go
in
and
make
trades
and
buy
and
sell
things
using
using
your
mobile.
A
It's
just
a
really
really
interesting
use
case
and
it's
working
now
with
a
decentralized
identity
like
like
you,
port,
a
big
problem.
It's
also
also
like
what
happens
if
you
lose
your
your
device,
if
your
device,
if
your
identity
is
managed
on
your
on
your
phone,
if
there's
no
other
company
in
charge
of
it,
how
do
you
recover
your
password
or
something
like
that
which
you
would
do
like
if
you
lose
your
passport,
you
can
go
to
the
passport
agency
will
issue
your
new
one
with
you
port
you're,
the
person
issuing
it.
A
So
you
don't
really
want
to
lose
your
identity.
So
what
we've
also
come
up
with
is
a
very,
very
interesting
way
of
you
using
your
existing
network
of
friends
or
family.
So
you
can
go
in
and
add
your
your
family
members
as
a
recovery
Network,
and
if
you
lose
your
phone,
your
family
members
can
help.
You
recover
your
identity
without
going
to
the
government
office,
you
know
getting
in
line
again
or
filling
out
application
forms.
Anything
like
that.
You
have
your
identity
recovered
in.
In
a
matter
of
minutes,
you.
