Description
House Agriculture Subcommittee House Hearing Room 3
C
A
A
Thank
you
for
that.
Welcome
to
the
first
meeting
of
the
agricultural
national
resources
subcommittee
for
this
year.
I
think
I'll
give
you
an
interesting
fact
of
the
day
first
and
then
we'll
do
some
introductions.
A
A
Not
only
are
the
caves
in
tennessee
numerous,
but
they're
filled
with
the
farmer's
best
friends,
the
bat,
a
single
colony
of
150
brown
bats,
eat
nearly
1.3
million
insects
in
a
year
which
helps
prevent
those
insects
from
damaging
farmland
and
crops.
The
value
of
bats
to
tennessee
agriculture
is
estimated
to
be
above
313
million
dollars
annually.
A
Bats,
provide
pest
control
services
that
save
the
u.s
agricultural
industry
from
three
to
three
to
53
billion
dollars
a
year
depending
on
the
estimates.
Interestingly,
the
bat
conservation
international
states
that
bats
make
up
one-fifth
of
the
mammal
population
on
earth.
In
a
study
by
the
university
of
tennessee,
scientists
warned
that
these
animals
are
at
risk
from
diseases,
specifically
the
white
nose
syndrome
and
wind
turbines,
which
can
lead
to
significant
losses
on
the
farms
across
our
nation.
A
So
just
some
very
interesting
facts
and
I
have
actually
personally
built
some
bat
houses
with
some
boy
scouts
in
the
past
to
try
to
accommodate
for
more
bat
populations
in
our
communities,
and
I
know
on
my
little
farm.
I
can
see
them
working
at
dusk
in
the
evening
getting
rid
of
the
mosquitoes
in
our
in
our
area
and
certainly
welcome
their
presence.
D
Thank
you,
mr
chairman
tandy
darby
representing
district
76,
which
is
all
of
carroll
county
or
excuse
me
all
of
weekly,
county
and
north
part
of
carroll
county
and
the
northeast
part
of
o'brien
county.
I'm
in
the
produce
business
been
there
since
I
graduated
college
with
an
ag
business
degree
from
utm
and
look
forward
to
serving
on
this
committee
again.
Thank
you.
E
Sir,
thank
you
representative
reading,
thank
you,
mr
chairman
jay
reedy
house,
district
74,
which
is
houston
humphreys
and
the
part
of
montgomery
county,
but
as
we
voted
last
night,
that
is
radically
changing
look
forward
to
the
new
district
cattle
farmer,
small
business
owner
and
always
love
being
on
the
ag
committee.
Thank
you,
mr
chairman.
F
G
Thank
you.
I
wasn't
paying
attention
bud
hall's
the
district
two,
which
is
most
of
kingsport
and
and
half
of
sullivan
county
right
up
on
the
virginia
line.
G
I
was
born
in
arizona
and
raised
in
southwestern
colorado.
I
went
to
college
in
south
carolina
moved
to
tennessee
in
1972,
which
people
still
say
to
me.
You
ain't
from
around
here
and
but
I
I've
been
here
longer
than
most
of
people
in
this
room
have
been
alive,
so
I'm
glad
to
be
on
ag.
Thank
you,
sir.
We're
glad
to
have
you.
H
Thank
you,
mr
chairman
and
representative
holsey.
I
speak
from
experience.
You
always
have
to
be
paying
attention.
You
never
can
tell
when
your
name
will
be
called
I'm
I
serve
mcminn
county
and
a
and
half
of
monroe
we're
right
in
between
knoxville
and
chattanooga
and
east
tennessee,
and
so
we
have
a
small
family
farm.
It's
been
in
our
family
since
about
1850
or
so,
and
so
beef
cattle
and
racking
horses,
and
so
also
honored
to
to
be
on
the
ag
committee
appreciate
it.
C
Thank
you,
mr
chairman.
Chris
hurt
I
represent
the
82nd
district,
which
is
lauderdale
crockett
and
haywood
counties
in
west
tennessee,
we're
pretty
well
located
right
on
the
mississippi
river,
I'm
currently
a
real
estate
broker,
but
and
on
my
own
farm
there
in
halls,
but
I'm
also
heavily
involved
in
agriculture
with
my
family,
mainly
through
through
row,
crop
farming.
So
it's
an
honor
to
be
on
on
the
ag
committee.
Thank
you.
I
I've
forgotten
the
routine
I've
been
gone
from
here.
Pretty
long,
I
didn't
mean
to
be
late.
I
was
tied
up
on
something
so,
but
my
name
is
curtis
halford.
I
I
chair
the
house,
agriculture,
natural
resources
committee,
my
my
district
is
district
79
and
that's
made
up
of
all
of
gibson
county
and
I
share
part
of
carroll
county
with
representative
darby
down
here.
So
it's
a
good
place
to
be.
This
is
a
good
committee.
I
I've
been
on
this
committee
for
several
several
years
and
it's
always
been
a
great
place
to
be
I've
enjoyed
it
most.
All
of
it
there's
been
a
few
days
that
I
didn't
enjoy
it
as
much
as
I
did
other
days,
but
it's
been
a
good
place
to
be
so
I'm
looking
forward
to
this
year
and
which
I
might
let
everybody
know
that
this
will
be
my
last
session,
and
so
it's
been
a
great
place
to
be,
and
so
I'll
still
be
at
dyer
tennessee.
I
A
Thank
you,
sir,
and
we
were
we're
certainly
going
to
miss
you.
You
have
been
a
a
mainstay
in
this
realm
and
we
appreciate
your
service,
sir,
and
I'm
chris
todd.
I
serve
the
73rd
house
district,
which
is
most
of
madison
county
around
jackson,
and
I
have
an
erosion,
control
and
grassing
business
with
my
wife
and
we
live
on
a
small
hay
farm
in
just
outside
of
jackson
out
in
a
rural
area
and
certainly
appreciate
the
opportunity
to
serve
in
this
capacity.
A
I
want
to
introduce
our
staff
for
this
committee.
We
have
our
attorney
for
the
committee.
Is
ms
lovin
middleton
dunn.
Next
to
me
here
we
have
matthew
mundy
as
well.
We
have
research.
Analyst
is
tanner
poss
to
my
right,
our
clerk
imani
gordon
and
our
sergeant-at-arms
wayne
hawk
for
our
house

If
you
would
like
to

in
this
committee,
it
must
be
put
on
notice
electronically,
through
the

on
your

or

A
A

you
have
plan
to
have
a
presentation
before
before
the
committee,
the
chair,
respectively,
request
you
contact
my
office
or
the
research
analyst
for
approval.
E
A
Seeing
none,
we
do
have
one
item
on
our
calendar
today
and
it's
item
number
one
house
bill
175
by
representative
hurt
this
bill
has
been
requested
to
be
taken
off
notice
because
this
bill
has
been
calendared
three
times.
I
move
this
bill
to
be
placed
on
the
special
calendar
to
be
published
with
the
committee's
final
calendar,
with
no
objection.
