A
Good
afternoon,
ladies
and
gentlemen,
on
behalf
of
fire
chief
david
pavlets
in
the
arlington
county
fire
department,
welcome
to
the
graduation
ceremony
for
the
arlington
county.
Fire
department
recruit
school
78,
the
grant
the
graduating
class
and
the
department
would
like
to
thank
you
for
attending
today's
ceremony.
A
The
recruits
began
training
for
the
position
of
firefighter
emt
with
the
arlington
county
fire
department
28
weeks
ago.
The
intense
instruction
they
received
during
recruit
school
included
certification
programs
such
as
firefighter
one
and
two
emergency
medical
technician,
emergency
vehicle
operator
and
hazardous
materials
operations,
as
well
as
many
other
essential
skills.
A
A
So
today,
if
you
have
a
family
member
friend
or
favorite
recruit,
please
do
not
hesitate
to
express
your
pride
by
clapping
or
cheering
when
you
see
them
or
when
they
get
their
diploma
or
receive
an
award.
Look.
You
can
even
boo
and
jeer
them.
If
you
want,
let's
just
keep
it
clean.
Okay,
all
right
now!
Look
we
always
have
a
problem
with
this.
So
let's
practice
everybody
ready,
hey,
look!
There's
a
family
member
friend
or
favorite
recruit.

C
B
D
Let's
pray
great
god
of
this
universe,
we
pause
in
this
moment
to
seek
your
presence
a
moment
that
is
often
filled
with
much
celebration,
many
friends
and
family.
But
today,
although
we
recognize
the
great
accomplishment
of
these
firefighters,
it
does
not
feel
quite
as
celebratory.
It
is
quieter,
more
muted,
less
full,
maybe
even
future
somewhat
uncertain,
and
it
is
in
this
moment
that
we
invite
your
presence
all
the
more
may.
D
B
E
Good
afternoon,
I
would
like
to
thank
the
graduates
of
class
78,
your
guests,
family
and
friends,
along
with
the
members
of
the
department
for
joining
us
this
afternoon.
Common
themes
for
class
78
are
adaptation
and
resilience.
Thank
you
very
much
for
joining
us
in
a
unconventional
graduation
ceremony,
that's
kind
of
been
the
sign
of
the
times.
We
appreciate
everyone
being
more
flexible
and
adaptable
in
these
times,
we'll
try
to
get
it
in
as
fast
as
possible,
but
it
looks
like
we're
going
to
be
okay,
hopefully
for
the
next
few
minutes.
E
This
afternoon
we
appreciate
your
patience
and
your
your
absolute
dedication
trying
to
support
class
78
through
these
several
weeks
in
several
several
months
class
78
rally
to
complete
the
rigorous
training
in
ever-changing
conditions.
The
department
is
grateful.
We
need
you
on
our
team
and
also
in
the
field.
E
E
We
want
each
graduate
to
have
a
long
and
safe
career
serving
the
residents
of
visitors
of
arlington
county.
They
deserve
a
department
that
continually
trains
and
prepares.
We
should
be
quick
to
respond
but
patient
to
listen
to
those
who
need
help.
Class
78
focused
on
mastering
the
fundamentals
and
the
details
of
our
profession.
E
They
may
respond
to
10
or
15
calls
on
the
shift.
They
work
hard
to
reduce
the
need
for
anyone
to
call
9-1-1
for
fire
rescue
or
emergency
medical
services.
Class
78
is
capable
and
prepared.
I've
been
impressed
with
what
I've
saw,
what
I've
seen
from
them
during
this
entire
class
they're
ready
to
assist
and
serve.
E
What
can
class
70
expect
from
the
more
than
370
uniformed
members
and
staff
of
the
arlington
county
fire
department.
We
will
set
an
example
of
honorable
and
dedicated
community
service,
we'll
provide
them
with
advanced
training
to
serve
as
paramedics
drive,
fire
engines
and
ladder
trucks
and
serve
on
technical
rescue
teams.
We
want
to
open
professional
opportunities,
as
there
are
many
interesting
career
paths
within
the
department
we'll
join
them
in
physical
fitness
and
behavioral
wellness
training.
We
have
an
obligation
and
a
duty
to
provide
them
a
safe,
engaging
work
environment.
E
We
welcome
you
to
our
team
class.
78
will
be
another
page
in
the
more
than
eight
dec
decade,
history
of
the
career
fire
department,
the
driven
academy
staff
and
instructors
have
been
modeling
the
integrity
and
teamwork
for
them
to
be
successful,
they're
some
of
the
most
dedicated
we
have
in
the
department.
They
live.
What
we
expect
from
all
they
invest
in
your
future
and
be
a
phone
call
away
if
you
need
help
soon,
you'll
see
why
we
chose
this
profession
that
is
filled
with
risk
and
uncertainty.
E
We
get
notes
from
thanks
from
families
and
friends
who
have
a
second
chance
at
life.
We
take
it.
We
see
a
look
of
relief
in
the
faces
of
a
store
owner
who,
after
we
respond
to
a
fire,
and
we
stopped
and
contained
a
family
to
stop
to
contain
so
that
they
don't
have
damage
to
their
family
business.
We
pass
on
knowledge
to
help
our
neighbors
to
make
their
homes
safe
and
make
their
home
safe
and
businesses
safe
and
secure.
E
E
Sometimes
we
know
when
a
class
of
children
say
they
want
to
be
firefighters
and
paramedics,
but
the
best
reason
for
choosing
this
profession
are
all
around
us.
It
serves
us
well
to
appreciate
and
recognize
the
privilege
that
our
community
has
given
us.
We
are
excited
for
you
to
apply
what
you
have
learned.
E
The
county
department
and
our
family
and
friends
are
ready
to
help
support
you.
As
you
start
your
career
in
the
arlington
county
fire
department.
In
closing,
I
must
ask
for
your
assistance.
This
graduation
ceremony
is
one
of
the
best
events
of
the
year.
We
are
proud
of
class
78,
but
we're
also
excited
that
the
academy
staff
will
be
welcoming,
recruit
class
79
at
the
end
of
october
class
79
will
need
your
help
to
get
them
off
to
a
good
start
in
about
a
year.
E
E
E
A
B
A
If
anyone
would
like
to
take
pictures,
you
could
certainly
come
down
and
get
a
picture
of
your
family
member
favorite
recruit.

D
E
Thank
you
captain
santini.
This
is
the
best
part.
This
makes
it
official
the
community
county
board
and
the
manager's
office
extends
trust
and
confidence
in
the
department
every
day
we
must
earn
this.
Now,
I'm
going
to
give
I'm
going
to
ask
you
to
make
the
commitment
by
taking
the
oath
as
to
serve
as
probationary,
firefighter
and
emergency
medical
technician,
recruit,
class
78,
raise
your
right
hand
and
repeat
after
me,
I
do
solemnly
swear
that
I
will
faithfully
execute
the
duties
and
responsibilities
as
a
member
of
the
arlington
county
fire
department.

C
Good
afternoon
families,
friends
special
guests,
including
our
friends
from
department
to
dc
and
alexandria,
of
course,
recruit
class
78
and
my
acn
acfd
brothers
and
sisters.
Thank
you
for
joining
us
today,
as
we
celebrate
the
accomplishments
of
recruit
class
78,
but
first
the
fta
staff.
C
C
C
C
C
Now
for
recruit
class
78
on
february
18th
of
2020,
you
begin
your
fire
service
careers
with
the
arlington
county
fire
department
at
six
weeks,
in,
as
we
were
just
getting
to
know,
each
other
learning
our
routines
and
adapting
to
the
expectations
a
global
pandemic
hit
and
nearly
derailed.
The
entire
school
by
march,
25th
of
2020,
the
hybrid
recruit
school,
was
implemented,
isolating
us
by
our
squad
assignments
outside
of
emt
module
testing.
C
C
You
found
out
quick.
This
is
a
team-oriented
profession.
The
individuals
eventually
shared
and
carried
the
r7
rc
78
banner
placed
the
priority
on
us
and
we
versus
I
and
me
as
a
group.
You
overcame
virtual
learning,
recruit
class
fta
staff,
adjustments,
isolations,
quarantines
social
distancing,
face
masks
and
inquiry,
injuries,
module
state
registry
testing,
100
degree,
heat
indices
and
a
35
foot
ladder
to
the
face,
and
this
is
only
life
at
the
fta.

A
Okay,
most
people
do
not
realize
the
fire
service
has
a
very
rich
and
storied
history
filled
with
triumph
and
tragedy.
I'm
sure
the
recruits
will
tell
you
that
one
of
their
favorite
classes
was
learning
about
that
history.
Isn't
that
right
within
that
history,
tradition
plays
a
very
important
role
even
to
this
day,
from
our
rank
structure,
the
insignias
that
we
wear
the
terminology
that
we
use
dalmatians
the
fact
that
engine
companies
are
better
than
truck
companies.
A
Thank
you
to
the
role
of
the
rookies
in
the
firehouse.
These
traditions
define
who
we
are
and
what
we
do.
One
of
the
traditions
that
the
training
academy
has
is
the
issuing
of
the
class
guide
on
the
time
has
come
to
retire.
The
guide
on
for
recruit
class,
78
class
78,
please
rise
for
the
retirement
of
the
guide
on
accepting
the
guide
on
on
behalf
of
the
training
staff,
will
be
firefighter
paramedic,
marissa,
zappala.
A
A
It
represents
dedication
to
pride,
teamwork
and
respect.
If
disrespected
the
guide
on
was
rolled
and
the
staff
would
determine
what
action
was
needed
to
restore
it.
The
time
has
come
to
retire.
The
guide
on
no
other
class
will
have
that
guide
on.
It
belongs
to
class
78,
and
I
urge
the
members
as
they
embark
upon
their
career,
to
always
remember
what
it
stands.
A
D
As
these
graduates
move
from
the
classroom
to
the
firehouse
hear
this,
our
collective
prayer
or
god
instill
in
each
of
us,
the
lasting
desire
to
extend
unreserved
compassion
to
all,
especially
those
in
life's
greatest
moments
of
need
instill
in
each
of
us.
The
uncompromising
commitment
to
seek
justice
for
even
the
least
among
us,
instill
in
each
of
us,
the
humility
necessary
to
ever
learn
from
you
and
from
those
around
us
amen.
A
Ladies
and
gentlemen,
this
concludes
this
afternoon's
ceremony.
Please
join
us
for
a
reception
for
the
graduates.
There
will
also
be
a
video
presentation
of
the
recruit
class
that
will
be
playing
on
a
loop
so
be
available
all
afternoon,
both
in
the
three
bay
garage
and
in
the
classroom.
Inside
captain
jake
ways
you
may
dismiss
recruit
class
78.
A
E
G
Hi
everybody-
this
is
mark
schwartz,
county
manager
and
I'm
here
to
congratulate
all
the
members
of
recruit
class
78
on
your
graduation
today,
and
so
I
understand,
you've
had
some
real
special
challenges.
The
28
week
course
has
been
extended
to
32
weeks.
You
had
to
go
through
some
very
special
decontamination
processes
wearing
face
masks
made
the
training
experience
really
very
different
from
what
it's
been
before.
Also,
I
understand
that
this
class
had
a
100
passage
rate
on
that
very
tough
test
to
become
an
emergency
medical
technician.
