A
It's
been
a
busy
2022
already
here
in
arlington,
with
multiple
projects
to
improve
transit,
reduce
flooding
and
plus.
We've
got
two
new
parks
for
everyone
to
enjoy
this
summer.
Let's
get
started
on
the
projects
to
watch
throughout
the
year
right
here
behind
me
at
a
brand
new
stormwater
detention
vault.
A
This
vault
is
being
built
under
the
field
at
cardinal
elementary
school
and
it
will
reduce
flood
risk
in
the
tourism
run,
watershed
which
includes
the
westover
neighborhood
and
shopping
center.
This
is
the
first
major
stormwater
capacity
project
from
flood
resilient
arlington,
designed
to
decrease
flooding
from
intense
short
periods
of
rainfall.
A
Construction
of
the
vault
is
underway
and
will
finish
in
spring.
2023
work
began
in
december
to
convert
boston
pond
from
a
storm
water
detention
pond
to
a
wetland.
This
will
reduce
pollutants
in
the
lubber
on
watershed
to
help
meet
current
storm
water
pollution
regulations
and
maintain
the
flood
control
function
of
the
pond.
The
restored
pond
will
feature
trash
collection
devices,
a
viewing
platform
on
its
eastern
side
as
well
as
invasive
plant
control.
A
Reconstruction
of
the
west
glebe
road
bridge
started
in
early
may
to
return
it
to
safe
working
conditions.
For
vehicle,
pedestrian
and
bicycle
traffic
in
arlington
and
alexandria,
improvements
will
include
additional
lighting
on
the
four
mile
run
trail
and
elements
from
artist,
vicky
scurry,
influenced
by
four
mile
run
to
visually
enhance
the
bridge.
Construction
is
expected
to
be
completed
by
summer
2023.
A
A
combined
operations
and
maintenance
facility
for
arlington
transit
is
being
built
in
the
green
valley
neighborhood
to
support
current
and
future
needs
of
the
art
bus
fleet.
The
facility
will
feature
a
maintenance
area
and
surface
parking
for
buses
and
a
four-story
building
for
administrative
and
operations
staff.
It's
anticipated
to
open
in
spring
2025..
A
More
changes
are
coming
to
columbia,
pike,
including
23,
new
transit
stations
to
accommodate
increased
bus
traffic
and
create
a
safer
and
more
accessible
travel
experience
for
everyone.
Construction
of
the
transit
stations
is
part
of
the
larger
columbia
pike.
Multimodal
improvements
project
artist,
spencer
finch
has
been
commissioned
to
enhance
the
canopies
of
the
new
stations
based
on
color
memories
collected
from
the
community
and
then
there's
the
recently
installed.
A
The
pike
constructed
by
artist
donald
lipsky
from
a
reclaimed
50-foot
tall,
wind
turbine
wing
marking
the
entrance
to
arlington
from
fairfax
the
base
of
the
sculpture
is
studded
with
thousands
of
coins
from
all
over
the
world
collected
from
arlington
residents.
The
coins
referenced
the
history
of
columbia,
pike
as
a
toll
road,
while
also
celebrating
arlington
as
a
diverse
community.
A
Demolition
has
begun
to
replace
the
aged
fire
station
8,
building
on
langston
boulevard
to
meet
current
operational
standards.
The
planned
three-story
fifteen
thousand
square
foot
station
will
feature
four
apparatus:
space
to
accommodate
equipment
requirements
and
improved
facilities
for
firefighters
and
staff.
A
A
It
features
open
space
and
a
plaza
public
art
and
outdoor
stage.
Neighborhood
history
and
community
information
and
seating
and
tables,
and
the
most
prominent
display,
is
the
freed
sculpture,
designed
by
award-winning
landscape
designer
and
artist
walter
hood.
The
30-foot
tall
beacon
pays
homage
to
the
notion
of
freedom.
A
Well,
that's
going
to
do
it
for
projects
to
watch
here
in
arlington
that
have
been
completed
this
spring,
plus
some
that
are
underway
throughout
the
county.
