Description
In this episode of The Skinny, Christina Hallingse, Public Information Officer for the Asheville Police Department, explains features of the City's emergency alert system, AVL Alert.
A
Hi
I'm
Christina
Holling
see
the
public
information
officer
for
the
Asheville
Police
Department
I'm
really
excited
to
announce
that
the
city
has
implemented
AVL
alert
an
emergency
and
non-emergency
notification
system
for
both
citizens
and
employees.
Registering
for
AVL
alerts
is
very
simple.
If
you
go
to
WWE
and
see
you
and
click
on
AVL
alert
in
the
menu
tray
you'll
be
prompted
to
sign
up
for
AVL
alerts.
You'll
need
to
create
a
username
and
password
and
provide
information
on
the
geographic
locations
that
you
would
like
to
receive.
A
Alerts
for
you'll
also
be
able
to
choose
as
many
as
10
different
communication
methods
for
the
system
to
reach.
You
on
you
can
log
back
into
the
system
at
any
time
and
make
changes
to
these
geographic
locations
or
means
of
communicating
with
you.
If
you
live
work
or
travel
through
the
city
of
Asheville,
you
can
register
to
receive
alerts
for
up
to
five
geographic
locations
within
the
city
limits.
Those
geographic
locations
can
be
your
kids
schools,
your
home,
your
work,
your
spouse's
work
or
even
family
or
friends
that
live
within
city
limits.
A
By
registering
for
the
system
you're
automatically
enrolled
in
emergency
notifications
and
any
emergencies
that
might
affect
your
geographic
location,
you'll
receive
notifications.
For
when
registering
for
the
system,
you
choose
how
you
want
to
receive
notifications,
you
can
choose
text,
message,
phone
numbers,
email
addresses
or
to
receive
notifications
through
the
mobile
app.
One
of
the
greatest
benefits
of
this
system
is
that
you
choose
what
notifications
you
want
to
receive
and
how
you
want
to
receive
them
and
for
which
locations
you
want
to
receive
them.
You
also
have
the
ability
to
opt
into
several
non-emergency
notifications.
A
These
can
be
things
like
water
issues,
trash
or
brush
collection
or
street
closures.
We
always
encourage
to
check
back
into
the
system
to
see
what
new
non-emergency
notifications
you
have.
The
ability
to
opt
into.
You
can
also
log
back
into
the
system
at
any
time
and
change
any
of
your
geographic
locations
or
the
means
of
communication
and
which
you
receive
alerts
when
you
receive
an
alert
from
AVL
alert,
it'll
be
sent
to
the
communication
methods
that
you
have
chosen.
A
For
example,
if
you
choose
to
receive
a
text
message,
you'll
receive
a
text
message
from
a
rather
odd
looking
number,
starting
with
the
number
eight
and
four
digits
to
follow.
We
encourage
you
when
you
receive
your
first
text
message
to
save
this
number
and
your
phone
as
a
BL
alert.
So
you
know
when
you're
receiving
future
messages.
When
you
receive
the
first
notification
it'll
ask
you
to
confirm
receipt
of
the
alert.
If
you
do
not
confirm
the
system
will
continue
to
try
to
reach
you
at
the
other
communication
methods
you
have
registered,
for.
A
If
you
do
confirm
receipt,
you
will
receive
no
additional
messages
from
AVL
Alert.
We
are
also
really
excited
to
announce
that
we're
implementing
the
system
from
an
internal
standpoint
as
well
in
order
to
better
communicate
with
city
of
Asheville
employees
in
the
event
of
an
emergency.
For
the
past
year,
we
have
been
working
with
department,
directors
and
IT
to
get
everyone's
information
into
the
system.
If
you
are
an
employee
with
a
city
issued
cellphone,
there
is
no
need
to
do
anything
else
to
be
put
into
the
system.
A
If
you
do
not
have
a
city
issued
cellphone,
we
encourage
you
to
login
to
the
employee,
self-service
on
one
Asheville
and
update
information
to
include
a
personal
cell
phone
number
that
we
will
be
able
to
disseminate
information
to
you
in
the
event
of
an
emergency
or
inclement
weather
that
would
affect
our
city
of
Asheville
employees.
Once
we
have
received
this
information.
Everything
else
from
here
is
automated.
A
If
we
have
any
resignations
terminations,
retirements,
new
hires
or
lateral
transfers
within
the
city
of
Asheville,
this
information
will
be
updated
nightly
so
that
the
system
is
always
up-to-date
information
that
will
be
disseminated
on
a
V.
All
alerts
to
employees
can
include,
but
isn't
limited
to
emergency
situations
such
as
a
lockdown
of
a
building
or
an
active,
we'll
also
share
information
regarding
inclement
weather
and
possible
delays
or
closures
of
city
buildings
and
facilities.
A
The
benefit
to
using
a
viola
over
email
distribution
groups
is
that
this
has
the
ability
to
notify
employees
via
text
phone
call
and
email,
rather
than
just
a
single
email
to
your
gmail
account.
It
will
allow
employees
to
receive
up-to-date
and
timely
notifications
quickly
in
the
event
of
an
emergency.
A
viola
lards
gives
us
the
ability
to
quickly
and
easily
send
emergency
notifications
to
both
citizens
and
employees
in
order
to
ensure
the
safety
of
everyone.
