officer

transition

currently
serving
as
the
interim
director
of

equity
and
inclusion
office.

staffing,

say
I
can
add
that
our
two
employees,
that
are
there
paulina,
mendez
and
yashika
smith.

are
continuing
to
work
with
the
office
of
equity
inclusion
to
make
sure
that
work
is
continuing
on
most
recently,
you
may
have
noticed
in
the
media
that
we
have
released
our
racial
healing
grants.
Those
have
been
awarded
to
not
agencies
in
our
community,
so
we
are
continuing
to
work
around
updating
our
equity
action
plan.

in
our
city
auditor
has
conducted
an
equity
and
inclusion
assessment
of
the
office
and
that
will
be
available
during
the
council
retreat
when
that's
scheduled,
we're
also
working
through
our
budgeting
process
and
it's
the
framework
for
that
is
called
advancing
racial
equity
whereby,
for
the
first
time
we
are
beginning
to
utilize
the
equity
budget
tool
in
that
process
and
I've
served
along
with
mia
as
a
part
of
the
staff.

training

well,

employees
and
for
advisory
board
members
and
for
those
of
you
who
are
new,
that
opportunity
is
available
to
you
as
well

attend

work

chandler.
I
work
in
community
engagement
at
little
run
university
and
the
recently
launched
little
run
equity
and
diversity
institute.
I
love
people
and
I
miss
them
very
much.
I
do
a
lot
of
events
and
a
lot
of
work
in
the
community
and
what
I
why
I
wanted
to
join
the
commission.

learned
about
it
while
I
was
in
leadership,
asheville
and

part
of
my
personal
journey
to
equity
was
identifying
that
I
am
really
passionate
about
advocacy,
work
and
doing
the
work
and
the
research
to
affect
policy
and
effect
change
that
will
move
us
in

right
direction
as
a
city
as
a
community
and
then
more
myopically
in
my
own
household,
I
have
a
very
young
son
and
I
want
to
raise
him
to
be
a
good
human
and
I
feel
like
I
can
never
educate
myself
enough
on
how
to
do
that,

I
want
to
be
able
to
show
him
the

best
way
that
he
can
be
the
best
community
member
possible.

teacher
here
at
ashfield,

cooking
cooking
academy,

this
position

make
an
impact
for
the
community

kids.

passion
is
the
kids,

make
sure
my
kids
and
everybody
else.
Kids
have
to
have
a
fair
opportunity
to
making
it
here
in
asheville
and
not
not
to
be
held
back
because

may

I
am
dolores
williams-venable,
I'm
an
asheville
native
in
schools,
I'm
an
agent
she's
in
asheville.
I
also
am
the
organizer
and
chief
operating
officer
of
actual
white
lives
matter.
I
One
of
the
reasons
why
I
got
on
this
commission
was
because
I
felt
that
I
could
help
lend
my
political
and
also
community
engagement
to
this
board
and
be
able
to
levy
and
be
able
to
bridge
some
gaps
within
communities
that
are
marginalized
and
do
not
have
the
same
amount
of
advocacy
as
others.
I
also
try
to
be
very
as
a
healthcare
professional
myself.
I
I
also
do
a
lot
of
a
home-based
and
community-based
health
care,
so
one
of
my
things
is
being
able
to
defect
from
the
five
determinants
of
health
that
that
affects
marginalized,
especially
black
communities
and
right
here
in
western
north
carolina.
I
I
just
always
want
to
make
that
impact
to
where
people
know
first
and
everything
else
is
second
base,
so
I
hope
that
our
board
can
be
advocacy
for
be
being
able
to
push
initiatives
forward
here
in
asheville
that
can
help
our
community
and
not
only
help
it
but
sustain
us
as
far
as
economics,
housing,
criminal
justice
and
every
other
health
care
and
every
form
of
term
in
our
community.

engagement

the

north
carolina
aids

hiv
prevention,
education,
we

harm
reduction,
syringes.

it,

significant
other,
my
spouse

african-american
and
so
half
my
family
is
african-american
and
as
someone
who
has
grown
up
in
the
south,
I

continually
trying
to
identify
my
implicit
biases
and
work
on
myself
and
educate

self,

I
really
want
to
be
to
use
my
voice
as
a
as
a
change.

a
lot

things
going
on
in
the
city
right
now
and
a
lot
of
decisions
being
made

learn,

also
here

make
sure

right

and

and
things

decolonization

awareness

the
intersectionality

all

us

colonialism

centering
certain
issues

others

bringing
the
solutions
to
how
to
not
do
that,
so

can
work
together
as
a
team
intersectionally

sure

one

color
in
this
town
doesn't

voice
or
is
misrepresented.

veronica

I
lived
in
nashville
for
17
years
now,
I'm
originally
from
the
coast,
and
I
run
a
non-profit
that
helps
cat
owners
of
the
western
north
carolina
area
and
I'm
raising
two
children,
one
of
whom
has
a
disability,
and
that
leads
me
into
why
I
got
on
this
commission
was
to.

I
realized
that,
once
I
moved
all
the
way
into
the
city,
how
I
navigated
that
city
and
how
my
family
navigated,
the
city
was
affected
by
you,
know
wheelchair
access
and
different
types
of
accessibility-
and
it
was
important
for
me
to
want
to
take
part
in
that
and
making
it
better
not
just
for
her,
but
for
anyone.
Who's
encountering
inequity
in
in
any
kind
of
way-
and
this
is
it.

Well,
thank

being

new
members

happy
new
year
welcome
back
returning

So
for
me
I
joined
the
commission
because
for
one
I
just
had
a
passion
for
advocacy
as
susie
had
brought
out
earlier,
and
the
fact
that
I'd
love
to
be
in
meetings
and
in
spaces
where
we
can,
we
can
organize
in
a
strategic
way
how
to
move
forward
without
necessarily
like
bumping
heads,
but
we
have
a
job
to
do
and
that's
what
I
felt
when
we
first
had
our
first
meeting
as
hrca.

It
really
felt
like
we.
You
know,
of
course,
we're
different,
culturally
and
different
things
like
that,
but
I
just
felt
like
there
was
a
connection
that
was
made
and
you
know
we
all
have
our
own
feelings
about
where
we
are
now.
But
for
me
it's
just
been
an
infusement
of
power
just
flowing
through
me
just
thinking
about
the
possibilities
of
what
could
happen,
but
then
also
how
we
sometimes
don't
agree,
but
yet
we
still
we're
able
to
move
forward.

not
a
asheville
native
as
well.
I
moved
out
here
in
1997
and
I've
been
just
in
education.
So
that's
my
background.
I
love
working
with
children,
but
I
have
a
passion
for
civic
duty
and
just
being
in
these
spaces.

What
was
unique
about
hrca
for
me
was
the
fact
that,
in
spite
of
my
background,
my
lack
of
political
jargon-
I
felt
like
I
belonged
here,
you
know,
and
we
didn't
do
things
quite
well.
Robert's
rules
was
an
issue,
but
I
felt
like
for
me.
I
learned
a
lot
of
new
things:
human
behavior,
but
also
how
government
works,
how
city
government
works
and
how
we
can
impact
change.

my
hope
for
now
you
know,
as
we
move
forward,
is
that
we're
able
to
get
the
job
done
that
we
all
set
out
to
do
and
before
we
close
this
section

to
give

gap

great
way
to
put
how

feel

bringing
community

city
government

the
city

passionate

get

there's

members

historical
knowledge

this
commission
that

love
to
hear

wanted

say
that
back
in
2017-
I
don't
know
if
you
remember,
but
there
was
a
committee
form
called
the
blue
ribbon
committee
and
it
was
created
through
you
know,
city
council,
but
it
was
some
local

brought
community
voices
together
to
design
what
we
now
sit
on,
which
is
the
human
relations
commission
of
asheville.

and
so
that's
what
prompted
me
to
want
to
know,
and
so,
when
you
think
about
the
human
relations
commission,
its
focus
really
is
focused
on
what's
happening
here
in
asheville
and,
as
you
heard
vice
chair
venerable
speak
on
policing
and
education.

Those
are
just
some
of
the
things
that
we,
that
are
our
focus
areas.
So
I
want
to
encourage
you
when
you
have
time
to
go
ahead
and
review
the
the
ordinance
so
that
you
can.
You
know
familiarize
yourself
with
some
of
the
work
that
we're
set
out
to
do,
but,
among
other
things,
we're
here
to
support
the
efforts
of
the
equity
department.

yourselves
with
the
equity
department
and
the
staff.
That's
there
as

just
knowing
that

far
as
what
we're
going
to
focus
on
for
our
next
meeting
and
thus
according
to
that,
but
I
feel
like
I'm
just
in
this
room
by
myself
and
I
see
so
many
faces.
I
really
need
to
hear
from
my
members.
Could
commission
members
just

if
there's
something
that
you
you're
thinking
about
pertaining
to
the
history
of
hrca,
where
we
are
now
where
we've
been.

Didn't
want,
I,
I
was
kind
of
confused
there,
but
I
believe
one
of
the
things
that
the
hrca
does
have
the
ability
to
do
is
be
humanable
to
our
citizens
and
the
representation
that
we
do
have,
and
we
are
only
an
advocacy
board,
but
we
have
a
broad
generalization
of
what
we
can
be
able
to
do
for
this
community
and
we
take
into
account
our
talents
and
the
voices
of
our
community.
We
can
be
able
to
bridge
gaps
that
nobody
has
said.
I
remember
somebody
just
frequently
saying
I
said
it
before
too.
I
You
know
bridging
gaps
is
what
we
need
to
do
here
in
asheville,
because
that's
one
of
the
biggest
issues
that
we
have
here.
We
can
deal
with
certain
issues,
but
we
haven't
been
able
to
jump
the
pond.
So
you
know
one
of
the
things
about
community
is
the
community
is
not
connected
and
we
don't
have
a
solid
boundary
and
a
great
knowledge
of
political
assets
or
how
the
city
works,
and
this
is
what
this
board
is
very
good
for.
I
I
think
a
lot
of
us
who
have
worked
on
this
board
for
now
years
have
have
been
able
to
see
the
ability
and
the
girth
of
what
politics
and
what
that
means
to
people
and
how
that
influences
folks
on
their
everyday
day-to-day
lives,
and
we
do
have
the
ability
to
advocate
for
folks
who
do
not
have
a
voice.
So
I
tell
you
all
the
time
speak
to
your
neighbors
go
out
here
and
talk
to
folks.
You
would
not
necessarily
even
look
at
just
do
something
outside
of
yourself.
I
Does
not
that
didn't
pertain
to
your
non-profit
that
didn't
pertain
to
who
you
are
as
a
person.
Sometimes
you
have
to
go
outside
your
comfort
zones
and
that's
what
this
board
is
really
about
reaching
beyond
your
comfort
zones
being
able
to
address
issues
that
other
people
don't
have
the
ability
to
speak
about
or
have
knowledge
on
and
just
moving
forward
and
helping
the
city
to
be
the
best
city.
They
can
because
believe
me,
if
I
did
not
believe
in
asheville,
I
didn't
have
to
stay
here.
People
did
not
have
to
come
back
here.

believe
rosanna
mulcahy
will
heads
up
that
program.
Initially,
the
allotment
of
funding
for
that
particular
department.
We
felt
was
very
low
as
a
commission,
so
we
recommended
to
the
city
council
to
add
funds
to
the
minority
business
program
to
make
it
bigger
such
a
kind
of
a
dire
state
with
our
disparities
and
contracting
we've
also
discussed.

We've
made
a
memorandum
of
understanding
with
the
police
what
it's
the
citizens
police
about
cpac,
and
that
happened
I
think,
prior
to
covid.
So
I
think
we'd
probably
need
to
revisit
that.
There's
a
lot
of
things
that
we
need
to
revisit,
but
I'm
excited
to
be
here
and
I'm
looking
forward
to
the
the
hell
that
the
new
people
are
going
to
bring
us.

new
business-
this
is
the
fun
part,
so
we're
gonna
just
begin
to
take
steps
to
prioritize
the
2021
work
plan.
But
I
have
to
stress
and
just
reiterate
that
the
goal
is
not
to
leave
this
meeting
with
a
defined
or
definitive
work
plan
right
now,
we're
just
going
to
open
up
some
dialogue
and
just
kind
of
show
what
our
interests
are
right.
So
what
are
you
guys
interested
in
seeing
that
we
put
together
in
the
work
plan,
and
then
we
begin
to
work
that
plan
together
as
it
unfolds?

Just
basically
we're
gonna
push
have
that
for
our
next
meeting
and
go
into
more
detail
with
deeper
discussion,
but
we're
not
going
to
list
that
for
today
and
kind
of
go
into
a
discussion
of
that.
We
really
want
to
get
a
solid
plan
of
how
we're
going
to
move
forward
with
creating
and
implementing
this
work
plan.

the
whole
time
I've
been
speaking,
you
didn't
hear
me
just
halfway
through.

question
is
pretty
much
just
looking
at
creating
a
work
group
or
a
small
non-quorum
group
that
we
can
begin
this
process
and
I'm
willing
to
put
myself
in
that
group-
and
I
know
we've
been
here
before,
but
let's
just
look
at
it
now
we
have
new
members
fresh
blood,
we
can.
We
can
make
a
plan
and
we
can
move
forward
on
that
with
expectation.

make
sure
that
when
you're
in
these
work
groups,
you
know
we
do
this
is
we
are
representations
of
city
council
and
we
are
chartered
underneath
their
laws
and
other
things.

So
with
that
being
said,
when
you
have
these
work
groups,
you
need
to
keep
meeting
minutes
of
these
work
groups
and
if
you
meet
over
a
certain
number
of
a
quorum,
you
have
to
post
that
meeting
as
a
public
meeting,
because
it

vote

consent

have

power

willingness

able

working
relationship

best
