I'm a photographer and we're all half crazy from the start.

A

You should know that going in.

A

I view the world through a small lens,.

A

And it's usually only when something doesn't look right, that I focused in., but when things are working,, I'm like that country band from the blues brothers movie.

A

That shows up after everybody's already gone home.

A

The good ol' boys, right?.

A

Ahh... disorder, anarchy,, whatever you want to call it,.

A

I guess it's disorder when the folks are white.

A

And anarchy when they're black.

A

But when something like this happens,.

A

It's like all of the people and places and things,.

A

They just start playing for the camera.

A

Why, they're as comfortable around me as I am around them.

A

But the images don't lie, right?.

A

Well, that's what they say.

A

oh,! We put a little soundtrack over them.

A

And sometimes we don't like what we hear coming out of our own heads.

A

Here's a black lady running from a store covering her face with diapers,.

A

Trying to get away without being seen.

A

A black man loading, a bucket full of water and snacks.

A

For his neighbors.

A

And then, there it is.

A

Focus in now. this is the shot they're paying me for.

A

A punk kid from the projects wired on something: that's not legal.

A

Standing in the background with a tv perched on his head,.

A

Like one of them african villagers carrying water.

A

Damn looters... ought to shoot 'em, all,, right?.

A

President say he's coming down here to get 'em all --.

A

A

Here's a white couple waist-deep in water.

A

Floating a garbage bag behind them.

A

Bag is filled with commandeered supplies.

A

And we all say in our heads well,, you gotta do what you can to survive, right?.

A

You've got to take care of the babies.

A

And then you put yourself in their situation.

A

And you rattle it around in your head, some.

A

And you know damn well that you'd do the same. Thing.

A

Oh, but you wouldn't loot, right?

A

oh,, no,, you'd commandeer and keep harking back to that doped up kid with the tv.

A

Here's one of another kid.

A

standing in water wearing a brand new, pink fur coat.

A

Now,, the lady with the diapers for her baby.

A

And the man with the water and the food for his neighbors,.

A

Oh, they gone already.. They are the aberrations now., because how you going to compete on the 24-hour news network.

A

With a gangbanger in a pink fur, coat?.

A

Oh,, I know this city..

A

I was born here.

A

Founded by pirates and slave traders and rum runners.

A

Too, drunk or too newly-rich to know that they was standing under water!.

A

And with that sort of karma floating around in your head,.

A

Everybody wonders how seemingly normal god-fearing folks.

A

Can go into politics down here.

A

And suddenly become well-dressed,.

A

Respectable, white-collar criminals.

A

A lawmaker down here said that new orleans is half under water.

A

And half under indictment.
