From YouTube: Lake to Lake, February 2016
Description
Welcome to the February edition of Lake to Lake. This month we feature an inspirational visit to Bellevue City Hall by Dr. Terrence Roberts, a member of the historic Little Rock 9; a look at some of the many fun activities available at the South Bellevue Community Center, and more on this month's Lake to Lake.
A
Hello
and
welcome
to
Lake
to
Lake
a
show
about
our
beautiful
city
of
bellevue,
I'm
Robin
Haase
this
month.
We
feature
an
inspirational
visit
by
dr.
Terrence
Roberts,
a
member
of
the
historic
Little
Rock
Nine,
and
look
at
some
of
the
many
fun
activities
available
through
the
south
bellevue
community
center
and
a
great
outdoor
activity.
That's
perfect
for
a
day
of
fun
in
the
snow,
but
first
we
want
to
introduce
you
to
Bellevue's
newest
council
leadership.
At
the
start
of
the
year,
John
Stokes
was
elected
mayor
and
john
cho
minh
act
became
Bellevue's.
A
Deputy
mayor
mayor
Stokes
was
first
elected
to
the
city
council
in
2011
and
deputy
mayor
joe
mandak
was
elected
in
2004.
They
will
both
serve
two-year
terms.
Now
we
share
some
personal
reflections
from
dr.
Terrence
Roberts,
a
man
who
found
himself
at
the
center
of
the
civil
rights
movement
in
1957
when
he
was
among
the
first
group
of
african-american
students
to
desegregate
Little
Rock
Central
High
School,
a
federal
court
order
at
the
time
had
called
for
the
desegregation
of
schools
and
angry
protesters
in
Arkansas.
A
National
Guardsmen
tried
to
prevent
him
and
fellow
African
American
students
from
entering
their
school.
The
group
made
history
as
the
Little
Rock
Nine
this
year
on
Martin
Luther,
King
Day,
dr.
Roberts
came
to
Bellevue
to
tell
their
story
and
to
share
how
dr.
King's
legacy
is
still
relevant.
Today
we.
B
The
nine
were
locked
out
at
school
for
about
a
span
of
three
weeks,
at
which
point
the
President
did
act.
This
is
true,
although
I
don't
want
you
confused
about
the
acts
of
Eisenhower
okay,
he
did
not
act
out
of
being
a
champion
of
civil
rights
far
from
it,
but
in
any
case
he
did
act.
We
got
in
and
then
all
hell
broke
loose
because
we
had
breached
the
Citadel,
and
this
was
not
tolerable
no
way.
B
So
the
message
was:
either
you
leave
voluntarily
or
will
drag
you
out
dead
or
alive
doesn't
matter,
and
so
they
came
at
us.
We,
the
nine,
adopted
a
platform
of
non-violence
which
made
sense.
For
me,
the
very
mention
of
non-violence
got
my
attention
because
I
have
never
seen
the
efficacy
of
fighting
fighting
makes
no
sense
to
me
whatsoever
and
in
fact,
I
had
learned
from
my
mom
that
fighting
was
not
a
human
activity.
You
know
how
her
how
she
reasoned
she
said
this.
She
said
Terri
Roberts
used
to
talk
that
way.
B
Terri
Roberts,
you
are
an
animal.
This
is
true,
but
you
are
a
human
animal
and,
as
such
you
never
have
to
fight.
You
have
at
your
disposal
tools
to
help.
You
resolve
conflict.
You
have
the
power
speech,
you
have
brains,
you
can
negotiate,
you
can
compromise,
you
can
share,
you
don't
have
to
be
like
smaller
animals.
Rats
cats
with
small
brains
or
default
response
is
to
fight.
Why
would
you
ever
going
to
be
a
rat
whoa?
The
imagery
was
so
overwhelming.
I
said:
oh,
no,
not
me
I'm
gonna
be
a
human
I'm.
B
Not
going
to
fight
plus
I
had
heard
the
Golden
Rule.
You
know
that
rule
do
unto
others
as
you
would
have
them
do,
unto
you
in
fact,
when
I
first
heard
that
I
was
in
church
and
the
golden
rule
was
mentioned,
I
jumped
up
off
the
few
hallelujah
life's
gonna,
be
grand
I'm,
not
doing
anything
to
anybody
except
the
problem
is
not
everybody
reads
the
rule
or
if
they
read
it,
they
misinterpret
it.
Well,
as
a
consequence,
we
were.
C
B
We
walked
into
a
den
of
people
who
didn't
understand
the
principles
and
the
nuances
of
non-violence.
They
saw
us
simply
as
stationary
targets,
which
meant
I
had
to
go
to
option
two,
which
is
to
run
by
the
way
young
people,
especially
young
men,
in
the
room
running,
is
honorable
and
I
say
that,
because
I
spoke
to
a
middle
school
group,
not
too
many
months
ago,
and
a
young
middle
school
boy
stood
up
and
said,
dr.
Roberts
I
think
it's
crazy
I
have
to
fight
really.
Yes,
why
I
have
to
protect
my
manhood,
my
manhood.
B
A
Next,
a
center
that
just
celebrated
its
10th
anniversary,
maybe
one
of
Bellevue's
best-kept
secrets
within
the
40-acre
East
Gate
Park-
is
the
south
bellevue
community
center,
a
full
service,
fitness
and
recreation
facility
that
even
features
an
indoor
climbing
wall
as
director
brad
bennett
explains
the
fun.
There
is
moving
in
all
directions
inside
and
out.
E
The
fitness
center
at
south
bellevue
community
center
is
2,500
square
feet
and
is
made
up
of
a
variety
of
different
types
of
fitness
equipment.
We
have
a
wide
range
of
cardio
equipment,
including
cycles
treadmills
ellipticals.
We
also
have
a
wide
range
of
weight
machines
and
selection
of
free
weight.
South
bellevue
community
center
focuses
on
people
of
all
ages.
E
We
have
an
indoor
play
program
in
our
gym:
Monday,
Wednesday
and
Friday
mornings
that
allows
children
to
participate
in
activities
primarily
geared
for
about
1
years
1
year
old
and
up,
and
we
also
have
some
social
activities
for
aging
adult
population
self.
Building.
Community
centers
indoor
climbing
wall,
also
known
as
the
crag,
is
a
great
opportunity
for
young
people
to
learn
how
to
climb
properly
but
also
allows
families
to
do
a
recreational
activity
together.
F
E
Bellevue
challenge
course
is:
primary
purpose
is
for
Team
Development
that
allows
people
to
get
up
on
the
challenge
course,
whether
it's
the
high
course
the
low
course
or
the
vertical
playpen
and
engage
in
activities
that
really
helped
develop
the
individual,
the
Bellevue,
zipped
or
opened
up
two
years
ago
and
has
had
phenomenal
response
from
the
general
public.
Our
projected
goal
was
2500
riders
each
year
and
we've
exceeded
that
with
nearly
4400
in
the
first
year
and
about
the
same
number.
E
That's
a
program
that
allows
children
to
really
actually
work
out
and
get
physical
in
a
very
fun
way
by
hurdling
obstacles
using
proper
technique.
Things
that
I'm
most
proud
of
is
the
team
that
I
work
with
they're
they're
highly
dedicated,
they're,
very
caring
individuals.
They
care
about
the
people
that
they
serve
the
facility
that
they
work
at
the
programs
that
they
supervise,
and
you
can
see
that
in
interaction
with
our
customers.
Good.
E
A
F
Let
me
start
by
welcoming
you
all
this
is
an
intro
hi
could
go
up
to
snoqualmie,
pass
the
Mountaineers
of
property
going
to
spend
the
day
out
there,
checking
around
enjoying
the
snow
and
learning
how
to
snowshoe
snow
shoes
are
awesome
inventions
they
can
use
for
a
long
long
time.
As
long
as
people
who
walk
on
snow
they've
been
using
these
and.
F
To
use
the
great
thing
about
snowshoes:
they
have,
these
awesome
clamp
teeth,
so
you
can
walk
uphill
downhill,
just
like
normal,
and
then
they
rotate
they
articulate.
So
you
don't
need
a
flex,
your
foot,
you
don't
need
to
have
any
stress,
they
will
do
the
work
for
you.
Everyone
grab
a
pair
of
snowshoes,
so
let
us
head
out
tracks
is
the
outdoor
initiative
for
the
City
of
Bellevue
parks
department
and
it's
geared
towards
getting
people
outdoors.
We
have
a
range
of
programs.
F
F
The
goal
of
snow
shoeing
adventures
is
to
get
people
to
be
able
to
go
snowshoeing
themselves.
A
lot
of
people
have
kind
of
fear
about
going
outdoors,
especially
in
the
winter.
They
don't
know
the
equipment
that
will
have
the
equipment,
so
we
make
it
really
easy
and
accessible
to
them.
All
they
gotta
do
is
sign
up
and
we
provide
everything
you
need.
C
G
F
D
F
Here
in
comparison
to
all
the
other
outdoor
sports,
it's
actually
quite
quite
reasonable
to
go
out
for
a
day
when
the
whole
day
outdoors
and
have
a
great
experience.
We
make
it
as
easy
as
possible
if
you
show
up
and
we
take
care
of
the
rest,
all
the
gear,
all
the
transportation
and
having
two
guides
have
been
up
here
before
that
know.
The
area.
