Description
January 19, 2018 - Daily Table officially opened its Roxbury branch in Dudley Square. Daily Table is an innovative not-for-profit retail model developed to address hunger, food insecurity, and the related health issues that are often associated with a poor diet. Their mission is to help communities make great choices around food by making it easy for them to choose tasty, healthy, convenient, and affordable meals and groceries. By using surplus food from supermarkets, growers, and distributors, Daily Table is able to offer wholesome groceries and prepared meals to the community at affordable prices, competing with junk food alternatives. Much of the food will be prepared in our on-site kitchen. Their first store is located at 450 Washington Street in Dorchester; their second location is at 2201 Washington Street in Roxbury.
Speakers include Daily Table's founder and former president of Trader Joe's Doug Rauch, Mayor Marty Walsh, and Andrew Kendall of the HPK Foundation, among others.

daily
table

all
their
hard
work
and
the
staff
that
will
be
working
in
this
store,
obviously
and
Doug
for
his
vision,
our
community
partners.

it's
a
beautiful
space

walked

I
saw

space

that
there's

opportunity

so
much
possibilities
for
young
people
and
for
people
I
want
to
congratulate
daily
table
on
their
expansion
in
this
new
store.
As
you
know,
food
insecurity
is
a
big
issue
and
it's
been
a
big
issue
in
this
particular
neighborhood.

For
a
long
time
and
there
there
are
some,
the
tropical
foods
came
in
down
the
street,
built
a
beautiful
new
supermarket
you're,
starting
to
see
a
little
more
better
choices
for
people
for
their
food,
but
it's
so
important
that
we
continue.
This
Madison
Parker
has
been
doing
this
work
for
years,
creating
opportunities
in
the
neighborhood
and
it's
nice
to
see
it.

There's
opportunities
for
new
businesses
and
if
you
come
down
on
this
street
right
next
door
as
a
program
that
I
helped
start
with
the
Boston
Housing
Authority
before
I
was
the
man
called
building
pathways,
which
is
a
pathway
into
the
building
trades,
where
hundreds
of
young
people
are
now
in
the
building
trades
that
weren't
in
the
building
trades.
Before
and
now
you
come
right
next
door
and
you
have
this
place
daily
table.
You
have
good
fresh
food,
that's
gonna
be
served.

Seventh,
it's
gonna
be
able
to
be
purchased
seven
days
a
week,
365
days
a
year,
I
think
maybe

So
it's
important
it's

and
I'm,

the
numbers

you

importance

about
what
happens
here
in
this
very
location
and
the

important

giving
a
community
healthy
for
what
can
happen
in
the
community
and
too
often
the
conversation
is
about
what's
happening
down
on

steps
of
the
bank
and
what's
happening
in
Dudley
Square
and
what's
happening
with
all
the
all
the
all
the
violence
and
nuts
women's
violence.
But
all
the
craziness
and
a
lot
of
some
of
that
is
twofold
insecurity.

all
the
food
that's
gonna,
be
in
here
so
again,
I
just
want
to
I'm
just
on
its

I
want
to
thank
daily
table
for

your
commitment
to
our
city.

what
you
do
for
the
people

city

also
this
is
also
an
important
employment
agency.

people

live

community

get
a

young

start

the

living

21
years,

I've
come
to
love
Boston
when
I
have
the
chance
after
I
quote
graduated
from
Trader
Joe's
almost
ten
years
ago
to
go
back.
I
chose
to
be
here
and,
as
we
know,
Boston
is
a
great
city.

delighted

be
part
of
Roxbury.
We
are
hires
from
the
community
by
strong
preference
we
currently
have
between
Dorchester,
and
here
approximately
60
employees.
We
hope
that'll
be
growing
as
the
business
grows,

delighted

looking
forward
to
opening.

believe

it
I'm

official
opening

Roxbury
snoo
Estelle
themarket,
the
Bay
Capilouto
administration
is
thrilled
with
the
successful
completion
of
the
project
proud
to
recognize
daily
table
as
a
recipient
of
the
Massachusetts
food
venture
grant
program,
and
we
have
the
Department
of
Ag
resources
have
the
privilege
of
administering
that
program.

It's
proven
to
be
a
fantastic
investment
for
the
residents
of
the
Commonwealth.
It's
supported
several
organizations
to
finance
infrastructure
improvements,
build
capacity,
create
new
jobs,
meeting
its
goal
to
create
greater
access
to
healthy
foods
in
underserved
communities.
To
date,
the
Baker
Polito
administration
is
awarded
2.5
million
dollars
to
13
organizations
across
Massachusetts.
Through
this
program,
these
strategic
investments
have
created
new
opportunities
for
growth
expansion,
market
access
daily
table
with
what
I
think
is
visionary
leadership
by
Doug
and
his
team
are
helping
to
execute
that
our
programs
mission.

look
forward

hearing

the
impact
of
the
new
market,
how
it's
going
to
the
effect
that's
going
to
have
on
Roxbury
and
the
surrounding
community.

when
people
come

Our
farmers
are
happy
another
place
where
fresh
Massachusetts
grown
products
can
be
made
available
to
consumers
and
to
just
do
so,
many
wonderful
things,
helping
people
get
jobs
and
it's
creating
a
better
environment
here
in
the
community.
So

we
bring
it
back
to
maybe
the
first
part
of
daily
table
with
one
of
our
first
funders
to
invest
in
capital
general
operating
costs
for
both
our
stores
in
Dorchester
and
Roxbury,
and
that
is
Andrew
Kendall
from

Henry
P
Kendall
Foundation,
sorry,
that
was
a
tongue
twister
who's.
One
of
our
strongest
advocates
in
one
of
these
storms
advocates
for
New
England's
food
vision,
so
welcome
Andy
Kendall,
please.

Most
of
our
food
comes
from
thousands
of
miles
away
and
we're
at
the
end
of
the
supply
chain
and
therefore
are
susceptible
to
enormous
disruption,
whether
it's
by
weather
or
whether
it's
by
transportation,
whether
it's
by
political,
regulatory
or
other
factors
out
of
our
control
and
yes,
we're
not
going
to
be
completely
self-sufficient
and
we
shouldn't
be.
But
we
should
strengthen
our
own
farm
sector
here
and
utilize,
the
talent,
the
energy,
the
resources.
That
is
right.
That
are
right
here
in
this
state
and
across
the
region.
And
so
for
the
last
several
years.
E
We
as
a
group
have
been
investing
in
and
supporting
what.
We
call
disruptors
to
this
system
to
show
examples
of
what
the
future
could
be
like
in
a
stronger
regional
and
local
farm
economy
and
food
system
and,
of
course,
a
strong
resilient
food
system
means
regional,
healthy,
sustainable
local
food
for
everyone,
not
just
people
outside
of
the
cities.
It's
for
everyone,
and
so
I
want
to
give
you
a
couple
of
examples
and
then
come
back
to
daily
table
because
they
are
perhaps
well.
They
are
at
an
exciting
example
as
well.
E
There
are
215
colleges
and
universities
across
New
England
that
are
educating
a
million
students
in
any
given
year,
consuming
billions
of
dollars
of
food.
Think
about
the
concentration
of
buying
power
in
those
institutions.
They
all
want
to
source
more
locally,
more
sustainably,
more
healthy,
fresh
food
for
their
students.
It
doesn't
take
many
percentage
shifts
of
that
procurement
to
have
an
enormous
impact
on
our
local
economy.
In
fact,
UMass
Amherst
is
the
largest
campus
dining
operation
in
the
country,
and
their
goal
is
to
source
20%
of
their
food
from
Massachusetts
and
across
the
region.
E
That's
an
in
and
their
leader
is
an
evangelist
for
this
work
and
is
leading
the
charge.
Not
only
in
the
region
but
across
the
country,
Boston
Public
Market
has
come
on
the
scene
as
a
way
to
provide
access
to
the
state's
agricultural
bounty
and
is
putting
tens
of
millions
of
dollars
directly
in
the
pockets
of
farmers
that
is
resulting
in
buying
more
land
for
agricultural
use,
investing
in
plant
and
equipment
for
those
farms
and
hiring
more
staff.
E
So
there's
an
enormous
economic
impact
that
is
happening
as
a
result
of
us
in
the
city
having
direct
access
to
those
to
those
products.
Commonwealth
kitchen,
also
in
the
city,
is
serving
as
an
incubator
for
Boston
based
food
business
startups
and
trying
to
help
bring
resources
and
markets
to
bear
to
allow
them
to
grow
and
prosper
and
thrive,
creating
economic
value
and
the
opportunity
to
source
local
food.

The
school
districts
across
the
region,
K
through
12
Boston,
Worcester
Springfield
as
examples
have
trailblazing
visionary
leaders
amongst
them,
who
are
also
an
active
part
of
this
and
have
an
enormous
role
to
play
in
providing
better
nutrition
to
their
students.
And,
as
the
mayor
said,
when
students
get
fed
healthier
food
and
local
food,
they
perform
better.
They
pay
better
attention.
There's
less
absenteeism
and
that
the
results
are
already
showing
themselves
daily
table
is
a
critical
part
of
this
puzzle
and
it
is
a
puzzle.
I
got
a
I
got
to
tell
you.

It
involves
hundreds
of
organizations,
thousands
of
people
coming
at
it
from
all
directions
and
the
visionary
leadership
and
commitment
and
passion
that
doug
has
brought
in
in
bringing
daily
table
into
reality
and
assembling
a
team
and
showing
a
strong
compelling
plan
to
be
sustainable
and
scalable
across
the
city
and
resist
the
temptation
to
go
to
all
the
other
cities
across
the
country.
Despite
repeated
attempts
and
requests
and
encouragement,
he
knows
better.

He's
got
to
get
it
right
here
in
Boston
for
the
whole
city
first,
before
we
venture
beyond
the
city,
and
we
are
excited
and
honored
and
humbled

be
a
part
of
the

play
a
small
role
in
helping
him.

the

We
we
see
ourselves
more
as
a
partner
that
a
landlord

both

transitional
assistance

major
tenant

took
a
little
flak
for
keeping
some
of
the
retail
vacant,
because
the
the
kinds
of
options
that
were
coming
to
us
weren't
the
type
of
things,
what
we
really
saw
as
our
vision
for
where
Dudley
Square
was
headed
and
the
kind
of
retail
we
wanted
to
see
here.
So
we're
terrific,
thank

mayor,
Walsh,
for
being
here

in
your
commitment
to
Dudley
Square.

Welcome
to
historic,
Dudley
square
I'd
like
to
talk
a
little
bit
about
the
history
it
Doug
Lee
has
a
very
unique
and
valuable
history
here
in
the
city.
Most
people
don't
know
that
this
was
the
second
largest
shopping
district
in
the
city
for
decades,
until
the
50s,
the
first
being
Downtown,
Crossing
and
then
Dudley
Square,
and
it
wasn't
until
the
advent
of
malls
and
suburbs
and
sort
of
the
the
decline
of
the
urban
core
that
W
squared
lost
that
place
in
in
the
city's
history
and
as
a
major
business.

This
building
this
is
where
we're
standing
now
used
to
be
Woolworths
department
store.
Some
people
like
Val
Shelley,
know
that
we're
best
and
building
pathways
are
was
the
Woolworth
lunch
counter
and
the
upper
floors
were
mostly
light.
Manufacturing,
Madison,
Park
acquired
it
in
1997
I
got
here
in
1998
and
thought
what
the
heck
are.
We
doing
with
this
vacant
commercial
building
and
it's
in
a
declining
Dudley
square
at
the
time,
and
so
it
took
us
a
little
while
to
find
tenants
and
we
we
opened
it
reopened
it
in
2002,
fully
leased
with
new
tenants.

Madison
parks
offices
were
here
for
a
while,
and
we've
worked
with
Daley
table
for
I.
Don't
know
it's
been
a
couple
of
years
right
and
they've
invested
I
think
over
six
hundred
thousand.
It
might
be
more
than
that
in
renovating
yeah.
Sorry,
so
I've
lost
track
of
the
numbers,
so
they
go
up
which
is
sort
of
the
some
of
the
reason
why
it's
it's
taken
a
while
to
get
this
make
this
happen,
but
they
made
a
big
investment
in
this
space
and
that's
what
it
took
to
bring
really
high-quality,
vibrant
retail.

Here
I've
been
to
the
store
in
common
square.
It's
beautiful!
You
can't
find
more
delicious,
affordable
food
in
Boston,
it's
a
it's
a
lovely
store
and
I
know
the
people
that
shop
there
really
value
it.
We
love
this
store
and
the
store
front.
We
think
it's
going
to
be
the
better
store,
although
no
competition
I
thank
Doug
for
really
his
persistence.
His
vision,
he
started
tell
you
his
story,
but
many
of
you
know
Doug
Doug
hatched
this
idea
about
Dudley
table
back
in
2008.
He
was
a
fellow
at
Harvard
University.

been
able

put
together

team
of
folks
that
are
from
the
community
and
they'll,
be

to
run
operations

everyone

in
regards
to
what
they

we're
gonna
do
now
is
gonna,
take
go
outside
and
do
a
ribbon-cutting
and
then
we're
gonna
come
back
