From YouTube: Toys for Tots Kickoff 2019
Description
Mayor Walsh joined Toys for Tots Coordinator Jonathan Chan and Comanding Officer of the 1st Battalion 25th Marines Brian Lander to kickoff the organization's 71st year of service at the Innovation and Design Center in the Seaport. Toys for Tots collects and delivers toys to needy families with the help of church groups, Boys and Girls Clubs, and the Boston Housing Authority along with other organizations throughout the city.
A
Welcome
to
the
annual
Toys
for
kickoff
event,
my
name
is
Staff
Sergeant
Jonathan
Chan
I'm,
the
coordinator
for
the
Greater
Boston
area
Toys
for
Tots
campaign
this
year
quickly.
The
agenda
for
today
I'm
going
to
say
a
few
remarks
about
the
the
program
and
where
we
need
some
help
this
year,
then
I'm
going
to
talk
turn
it
over
to
major
Brian
Lander
from
1st
battalion,
25th
Marines,
we'll
say
a
few
remarks
and
then
we'll
turn
it
over
to
to
Mayor
Walsh.
A
For
his
remarks
and
to
close
this
out,
first
I'd
like
to
start
by
thanking
a
lot
of
our
key
volunteers
and
partners
that
are
here
today,
most
importantly
mayor
Walsh
and
his
office,
the
things
that
they
do
to
help
this
campaign.
A
lot
of
it
goes
unnoticed,
but
I
will
tell
you
that
they're
our
biggest
partner
and
keeping
not
just
the
campaign
in
the
city
but
making
sure
that
we're
a
success
every
year
and
that
we
have
the
things
that
we
need,
but
also
like
to
thank
Jamestown.
A
They
owned
and
managed
this
property,
and
they
continue
to
donate
this
space
to
us
again
with
partnership
with
the
mayor
and
some
other
key,
some
other
key
folks
in
the
city.
They
ensure
that
you
know
Toys
for
Tots
one
has
a
location
to
conduct
the
campaign
and
again
that
we
have
the
things
we
need
to
be
able
to
succeed.
So
I
want
to
thank
Jamestown
for
that
as
well.
State
Police,
they're,
probably
our
biggest
and
one
of
our
oldest
partners
here.
A
Folks,
just
know
now
that
you
can
go
anywhere
in
the
Commonwealth
and
bring
a
toy
to
any
State,
Police
barracks
and
they
partner
with
us,
and
they
help
us
with
that
huge
logistical
component
of
getting
all
the
toys
hundreds
of
thousands
of
toys
to
us
and
to
the
other
campaigns
throughout
the
Commonwealth
as
well.
So
thank
you.
State
Police,
the
colonel
and
the
folks
here
from
the
Massachusetts
State
Police
would
also
like
to
thank
Boston,
Police,
cynthia,
Brewington
and
others
that
are
here
today.
A
They
helped
us
with
with
vehicle
support
with
labor
Cinthia,
especially
she
really
steps
up
and
and
really
is
a
key
partner.
You
know
with
with
the
city
and
with
Toys
for
Tots
and
helping
us
with
many
of
the
things
we
have
to
do
in
order
to
get
the
toys
where
they
need
to
go,
but
also
like
to
thank
the
fire
departments.
A
We
have
some
of
the
Chiefs
here
today
for
the
for
the
city
again
similar
to
the
State
Police
folks
just
know
they
can
go
to
the
any
firehouse
and
basically
drop
those
toys
off
and
the
fire
houses
work
with
us
and
they
work
together
to
make
sure
that
we
consolidate
and
get
those
toys
here
in
a
timely
and
efficient
manner.
So
thank
you
to
the
fire
departments,
and
on
that
note
we
also
the
Suffolk,
County
and
Norfolk
County
Sheriff's
here
as
well.
In
their
office
same
same
thing,
vehicles
support,
labor,
helping
us
pick
up.
A
Toys
I
can't
stress
how
significant
that
is
and
the
help
that
they
provide
us.
So
thank
you.
We
also
have
DCF
here
they're,
one
of
our
one
of
our
biggest
partners
when
it
comes
to
toy
distribution
right.
The
the
need
in
the
Boston
area
is
so
great
for
toys.
You
know
myself
and
my
Marines
my
volunteers,
we
just
can't
do
it
all
ourselves
and
DCF
is
one
of
the
large
organizations
that
we
partner
with
to
help
get
toys
out
to
the
families
that
need
them.
A
A
And
then
we
have
the
things
that
we
that
we
need
I'd,
also
like
to
thank
Steve
from
Carlos
catering
in
East
Boston.
He
provides
food
to
the
volunteers
and
that's
something
that's
not
easy
to
come
by.
I
will
tell
you
that
that
Toys
for
Tots,
it's
you
know
it's
the
gold
standard.
When
it
comes
to
charities.
A
Ninety
seven
cents
of
every
dollar
goes
towards
a
toy
and
where
that
leaves
me
from
a
coordinating
perspective,
it's
a
tough
position
when
it
comes
to
buying
simple
things
like
water
and
food
for
the
volunteers,
so
so
Steve
from
from
Carlos
catering.
He
steps
up
others
as
well
and
really
helped
keep
my
volunteers
fed
and
motivated,
and
it
helps
make
for
a
more
productive
environment.
So
I
want
to
thank
him
and
again
I
want
to
thank
all
the
key
partners
that
are
here
and
the
volunteers
as
well.
So
thank
you.
A
Welcome
to
the
72nd
annual
Toys
for
Tots
campaign.
The
program
has
come
a
long
way
since
1947,
cumulatively,
since
then,
we've
collected
and
distributed
566
million
toys
to
just
over
250
eight
million
children
since
1947
and
locally
here
in
the
Greater
Boston
area.
It
was
a
hundred
eighty-three
thousand
toys
going
out
to
71
thousand
children
and
there's
no
there's
no
dressing
it
up.
The
need
is
going
to
be
greater
this
year
and,
put
that
in
perspective.
A
That's
one
toy
for
every
seat
in
Gillette
Stadium
and
that's
filling
up
Fenway
and
the
garden
twice
to
put
that
amount
of
toys
into
perspective
here
in
the
local
area,
as
I
mentioned,
Toys
for
Tots
is
an
official
Marine
Corps
activity
so
just
like,
we
deploy
conduct
combat
operations
in
Hanna
humanitarian
assistance
around
the
world
and
foreign
military
advising
we
also
conduct
Toys
for
Tots
and
all
of
the
local
communities
throughout
the
United
States
every
year.
An
interesting
note
on
the
community
piece
and
a
historic
note
that
I
want
to
quickly
call
out.
A
You
know
this
started
in
again
in
1947
major
bill,
Hendricks
had
wife
had
given
him,
essentially
a
Raggedy,
Ann
doll
and
said
you
know:
go
get
this
out
to
to
some
kids.
You
know,
and
it
was
war
orphans
at
the
time
right
in
1947.
He
came
back
and
said:
there's
no,
you
know
there's
no
one!
That's
doing
this!
There's
no
organization,
that's
giving
out
the
toys
and
then
luckily
his
wife
said
well
go
figure,
it
out
go,
make
it
happen
and
he
did.
A
He
went
and
rounded
up
some
of
his
Marines
in
the
LA
area
and
they
collected
and
distributed
about
5,000
toys,
so
that
was
really
the
birth
of
Toys
for
Tots
and
we've
been
doing
it.
You
know
every
year
since
also
on
the
historic
know.
You
know
1947,
there
were
some
defense
cuts,
you
know
being
proposed
and
the
Truman
administration
was
considering
significantly
marginalizing
the
Marine
Corps.
They
didn't
think
it
needed
to
stay
in
its
current
form.
A
You
know
we
were
gonna,
be
essentially
reduced
to
a
naval
guard,
and
luckily
we
had
the
support
of
communities
in
Boston
and
throughout
the
Commonwealth
and
the
rest
of
the
country
that
culminated
in
the
passing
of
the
1947
National
Defense
Authorization
Act,
which
made
it
law
that
no
administration,
no
president,
can
eliminate
or
significantly
reduce
the
Marine
Corps.
You
know
the
the
message
was
clear:
America
may
not
have
needed
a
Marine
Corps,
but
it
certainly
wanted
one
and
the
spirit
of
that
community
support
that
we
got
the
Commandant.
A
Having
seen
what
major
Hendrix
did
in
LA
in
1947
looked
across
the
entire
Marine
Corps
Reserve
and
said
you
know,
you
will
do
a
Toys
for
Tots
campaign
in
your
local
community,
the
following
year
in
1948,
and
they
did
again.
We
have
been
doing
that
ever
since
you
know
72
years
strong.
Now
we
will
only
be
successful
to
the
extent
that
we
can
partner
with
the
community.
I
mentioned
a
lot
of
key
partners
at
the
at
the
top
of
this
again,
it's
a
Marine
Corps
program.
A
You
know
where
we're
more
or
less
helping
to
provide
leadership
and
guidance
and
more
in
driving.
You
know
the
ship,
but
it's
it's
the
community.
That's
that's,
really
the
ones
to
step
up
and
help
us
with
not
just
a
toy
collection,
but
the
distribution
raising
awareness.
You
know
we're
here
to
drive
the
ship.
You
know
we're
not
just
along
for
the
ride,
but
to
that
end,
as
stated,
you
know
we
will
not
be
as
except
successful
as
we
certainly
can
be.
A
If
we
don't
engage
with
the
community
and
get
the
word
out
there
get
folks
involved,
get
get
people
interested,
get
people
here.
Volunteering
and
get
us
help
on
the
road,
and
that's
something
I'd
like
to
quickly
talk
about
for
what
you
can
do
and
the
message
I
need
you
to
take
away
back
to
your
organization's
back
to
your
teams
and
how
you
can
really
help
us.
A
donation
box
is
great.
You
know
the
toys.
A
We
absolutely
need
that,
but
I
will
tell
you
that
that
is
actually
an
area
of
overwhelming
support
and
it
gets
to
be
a
logistical
challenge.
You
know
we
have
over
500
drop-off
locations
throughout
the
Greater
Boston
region
over
150
events,
all
great
things,
but
when
I
only
have
one
or
two
volunteers
running
around
in
a
sedan
trying
to
pick
that
up,
that's
just
not
efficient
and
that's
not
an
effective
way
to
run
a
campaign.
You
know
so
I
do
need
folks
help
and
getting
us
the
not
just
volunteers,
but
also
vehicles.
A
Volunteers,
here,
sorting
those
toys
in
the
warehouse
like
I
said
well.
Do
talk,
do
close
to
200,000
toys
this
year.
That's
a
lot
of
moving
parts
and
I
need
volunteers
to
consistently
step
up
as
they
have
in
the
past,
but
especially
this
year
with
the
Marines
being
forward
deployed.
You
know
we
are
going
to
be
short,
a
labor
force
and
again
we
need
the
community
to
be
here
and
to
step
up.
So,
in
addition
to
you
know
volunteering
and
helping
the
road
and
transportation
sponsoring
a
Toys
for
Tots
event.
A
A
Okay,
so
I've
mentioned
quite
a
bit
here
and
how
you
can
help
you
know
just
to
quickly
summarize.
You
know
we,
our
success
is
not
the
marine
corps
alone.
It's
the
communities.
This
is
a
Community
Action
Programme.
You
know
so
please.
You
know,
please
help
us
this
year
so
that
we
can
bring.
You
know
that
that
sacred
and
you
know
cherished
holiday
spirit
and
and
happiness
to
the
less
fortunate
kids
and
I'll
leave
you
with
a
quote
from
general
mattis.
You
know
he
said
of
Marines
going
into
Fallujah
Iraq
in
2003.
A
You
know,
there's
no
better
friend
and
no
worse
enemy
than
a
u.s.
Marine
and
so
for
Toys
for
Tots.
We
stick
with
the
former
on
that
right,
there's,
no
better
friend.
So,
ladies
and
gentlemen,
there
is
no
better
friend
than
a
u.s.
Marine.
So
again,
please
help
us
with
Toys
for
Tots
this
year
and
stepping
up
and
partnering
with
us,
so
that
we
can
deliver
that
smile
to
those
children,
those
less
fortunate
kids
in
the
Greater
Boston
area.
A
B
Good
morning,
everyone
and
welcome,
thank
you
again
for
having
us
here
and
staff
in
our
chant.
Thank
you
very
much
for
those
those
comments.
What
I
wanted
to
do
first
is
make
or
say
thank
you
first
to
mayor
Walsh
and
his
staff
again.
Thank
you
so
much
for
facilitating
this
event.
It
means
a
lot
to
us.
The
staffs
aren't
chants
said.
I
also
wanted
to
say
thank
you
to
the
Jamestown
property
group,
the
company.
You
know
again
for
allowing
us
to
use
this
space.
B
We
appreciate
it
so
much
and
I
also
wanted
to
take
an
opportunity
to
thank
all
the
volunteers
who
helped
out
staffs,
aren't
chin.
You
know,
I
think
said
it
very
well,
but
they
are
always
working
behind
the
scenes
and
it's
often
a
thankless
job,
but
you
know
it's
absolutely
necessary
for
this
program
so
again
to
all
those
individuals
who
volunteer
countless
hours
I.
You
know
I
wanted
to
say
thank
you
and
again,
thank
you
to
all
the
men
and
women
in
uniform
for
helping
out.
We
really
appreciate
it.
B
What
staffs
aren't
Chan
was
able
to
highlight
some
of
the
significance
and
the
importance
of
this
program.
What
I
wanted
to
do
is
I
just
wanted
to
take
a
couple
minutes
and
kind
of
talk
about
what
this
program
means
to
the
Marine
Corps,
at
least
from
my
perspective,
and
to
me
what
this
program
means
to
us
and
it's
our
way
as
a
Marine
Corps
to
say
thank
you
to
such
a
wonderful
city.
That's
done
so
much
for
the
Marine
Corps.
This
is
a
very
patriotic
city.
B
I've
only
been
here
for
about
a
year,
but
from
what
I've
noticed
a
very
patriotic
City
and
snaps
are
enchanted
just
mentioned.
You
know.
We've
currently
forward
deployed
one
of
the
a
battalion
that
that
many
Marines
are
from
here.
That's
that's
something
that
this
city
and
this
great
state
has
given
so
much
to
the
Marine,
Corps
and
and
the
military
in
general.
So
for
me
our
ability
to
do
this
program,
that's
a
that's
a
way
for
us
to
say
sort
of.
Thank
you
back
to
the
community.
B
That's
kind
of
the
one
takeaway
that
I
had
and
sort
of
like
the
the
the
most
important
thing
that
I
could
think
of
for
this
program,
because
you
know
again,
this
city
does
so
much
for
us.
You
know
we
we
did.
We
talked
about
snaps.
Our
Chan
talked
about
the
importance.
I
think
I
think
that
that's
understood
just
the
absolute
value
that
this
program
as
this
program
does
for
us.
So
again,
I
wanted
to
just
say.
C
Thank
you
very
much
major
and
I
want
to
thank
you,
staff
sergeant,
chin
and
all
of
the
Marines
that
here
today.
Thank
you
so
much
for
for
this
incredible
program,
what
you
do
every
day,
Vinny
and
his
team
here
and
drydock.
Thank
you
as
well
you're,
here,
every
year
after
doing
incredible
work
working
with
the
Marines.
Thank
you
as
well
to
the
masters
State
Police,
who
will
partnership
with
Toys
for
Tots
yo.
Your
support
is
incredible
as
well:
Boston
Police
Department,
that's
here
as
well.
C
Members
of
the
Boston
Police
Department
Fire,
Commissioner,
Joe
Finn,
who
himself
is
a
problem
erine
and
is
a
father
of
two
Marines
and
I
want
to
thank
Joe
and
the
Commissioner
ends
and
his
entire
bought
some
Fire
Department,
that's
here
today,
but
also
that
will
be
helpful
throughout
the
entire
season
here.
Thank
you
for
your
support.
We're
joined
by
a
couple
elected
officials
nor
folks
in
Norfolk,
County,
Sheriff,
Jerry
McDermott's,
here,
Thank
You
sheriff
for
being
with
us
today.
C
I
know:
Suffolk
County,
Sheriff's
Department
is
represented
here,
we're
also
City
Council
at
the
a
garrison
here,
Thank
You
Council,
for
at
the
arson.
For
being
with
us
today
for
your
great
work
as
well
to
all
of
our
service,
women
and
men,
active
and
retired
deployed,
thank
you.
Thank
you
for
service
for
our
country.
We
had
we
celebrated
this
week.
We
celebrated
a
Veterans
Day
and
it's
it's
a
recognition
of
the
incredible
work
that
men
and
women
do
for
our
country.
When
these
heroes
come
home,
they
continue
to
serve.
C
As
you
heard,
the
staff
sergeant
talk
about
when
this
program
was
started.
It
was
helping
veterans
who
didn't
come
home
and
helping
their
families
in
the
program
hasn't
stopped,
and
that's
what's
amazing
about
not
just
Toys
for
Tots
and
the
Marines.
But
that's
what's
amazing
about
America.
We
rally
around
each
other
to
help
each
other
out.
C
I'd
be
remiss
if
I
said
if
we
just
keep
in
your
prayers
the
firefighter
who
lost
his
life
in
Worcester
yesterday
morning
that
that
you
know
what
doesn't
have
the
opportunity
to
go
to
Chris
have
Christmas
this
year
with
his
family.
Today
he
was
gonna,
be
in
Disney
World.
You
think
of
the
sacrifice
that
the
men
and
women
of
our
armed
services
of
our
public
safety
every
single
day
put
their
life
on
the
line
for
us
when
they
walk
out
the
front
door.
C
I
get
the
ploy
we
have
no
idea
if
they're
gonna
come
home
and
when
they
do
come
home.
They
do
amazing
things
like
this
and
when
they
don't
come
home,
they
support
their
brothers
and
sisters
that
didn't
come
home.
So
I
wanted
to
say
a
special
thank
you
to
everyone
here
today.
Toys
for
Tots
is
an
incredible
example
of
support
this
71
year
old
71
year
tradition,
helps
then
tens
of
thousands
of
children
every
year.
C
This
makes
a
real
difference
and
I
know
speaking
not
for
the
Marines,
but
true
the
Marines
I
was
a
state
representative
from
1997
to
2013,
and
in
1997
I
met
this
woman,
who
was
a
state
represented
from
how
her
name
was
Mary,
Jeanette,
Mary
and
I
did
an
event
for
Toys
for
Tots
and
I
actually
got
a
plaque.
They
gave
me
a
plaque
at
one
point
and
I
brought
into
the
office
and
I
showed
her
in
the
plaque.
C
We
need
help
to
help
these
volunteers.
We
need
to
make
sure
that
we
help
people
that
can
deliver
toys,
pic
toys
up,
drop
toys
off.
We
need
to
support
this
organization,
there's
been
times
over
the
last
10
years,
where
Toys
for
Tots
and
they
make
a
real
difference
every
year,
but
there's
been
times
and
for
the
last
few
years
that
they've
made
a
real
real
difference
when
our
economy
was
down
and
out
and
a
lot
of
people
didn't
have,
it
didn't
have
anything
and
then
the
need
was
greater
than
this
today.
C
Even
though
the
need
today
is
pretty
great
we're
asking
you
to
help
so
I'm
asking
the
media
outlets
here
today,
not
to
necessarily
put
me
on
on
your
TV
tonight,
but
make
sure
you
put
the
message
of
the
South
sahjhan
on
your
TV
tonight.
So
people
watching
the
news
tonight
will
get
a
chance
to
see
firsthand
the
importance
of
making
sure
they
support
this
program,
because
there
still
is
a
lot
of
need
out
there
with
that.
I
want
to
wish
everyone
a
happy
holiday
season
and
I
want
to
think
I.
