From YouTube: Mayor's Garden Contest 2018
Description
The Mayor's Garden Contest is an annual citywide celebration of urban gardening that was launched as part of Mayor Walsh's citywide beautification initiative. The contest recognizes gardeners who have landscaped, planted flowers, trees, and shrubs, and, in the process, helped beautify Boston's neighborhoods.
A
But
my
name
is
Ryan
woods
I'm
the
deputy
commissioner
for
the
Boston
Parks
and
Recreation
Department,
and
congratulations
to
everyone
here
tonight.
I
helped
judge
the
gardens
this
year
and
truly
impressed
by
your
gardening
efforts
and
the
pride
that
you
take
in
beautifying
the
city
of
Boston.
So
now
on
behalf
of
the
Boston
Parks
and
Recreation
Department,
my
pleasure
to
introduce
our
new
chief,
but
the
chief
of
environment,
energy
and
open
safes
for
the
city
of
Boston,
Chris
cook,.
B
How
about
a
round
of
applause
for
Ryan
woods
and
his
entire
team
and
all
the
judges
are
so
grateful.
Welcome
to
the
mayor's
Garden
Contest
Awards,
as
Ryan
said,
I
had
the
great
honor
being
the
chief
of
energy
environment,
open
space
I'm
so
happy
to
hear
that
the
gardens
were
absolutely
fantastic.
This
year
the
judges
had
a
really
tough
job.
Mayor
Walsh
asked
us
to
continue
this
contest
because
he
realized
the
benefits
of
gardening,
the
love
the
city
has
for
it.
B
How
gardening
brings
the
community
together,
while
helping
to
beautify
all
corners
of
Boston
he's
a
huge
supporter
of
the
gardens
about
to
the
Fenway
Victory
Gardens
several
times
we
were
just
down
in
Dorchester,
looking
another
garden,
a
trustees,
property
and,
looking
at
all,
the
amazing
work
that
the
communities
down
done.
They're
very,
very
grateful
for
his
support
of
open
space
he's
a
leader,
the
parks
department
budget
has
increased
every
single
year,
he's
been
in
office
and
its
really
really
reflected
that
his
history,
as
a
baseball
and
coach
has
informed
his
love
of
open
space.
C
C
What
you
do
to
your
you
know
your
window
boxes,
what
you
do
to
your
porches,
what
you
do
to
your
community,
what
you
do
to
inspiring
people,
I've
heard
so
I
sent
an
audio
I
said
in
the
pines
in
the
front
right
in
here.
All
of
the
great
things
you
do
I
want
to.
Thank
you
for
it,
because
not
only
is
it's
contagious
because
what
happens
is
in
other
other
neighborhoods
and
other
other
yards
people
see
what's
going
on
and
they
want
to
do
the
same
thing
and
every
year
I
stand
here.
C
C
We
are
doing
a
whole
new
renovation,
around
I
ads
with
with
new
flowers
and
flowers
that
bloom
throughout
the
year,
and
we
just
took
down
some
I'm,
not
sure
they
were
in
the
back,
but
we're
planting
a
beautiful
tree
and
doing
all
that
stuff
and
it
really
it
is
inspiring.
So,
first
of
all,
thank
you
to
all
of
you
all
of
the
the
people
who
into
this
contest,
I
want
to
thank
the
parks
department
for
their
incredible
work.
C
They
do
incredible
work
in
our
city
and
and
I'm
proud
of
a
proud
of
the
work
we
do
and
well
you
well,
your
gardens
look
like
is
what
we
want.
Our
packs
look
like.
We
want
them
to
look
beautiful.
We
want
them
not
just
not
just
the
rose
garden,
but
in
not
just
Christopher
Columbus
Park,
but
all
the
other
parks.
We
want
them
to
look
beautiful,
one,
young
people
and
old
people
and
everyone
in
between
a
see
something
special
when
it
comes
to
our
park
system.
So
we'll
be
making
investments
as
Chris
talked
about.
C
We've
made
those
investments
that
we're
going
to
continue
to
make
investments
in
our
parks,
not
just
for
the
Little
League's
either
for
the
pasture
parks.
It's
something
that's
really
important
for
us,
so
I.
Thank
you
for
inspiration.
I
want
to
thank
chief
cook,
Chris
Cook
and
his
his
great
work
as
the
Commissioner
for
Parks
and
Recreation,
and
now
is
the
the
chief
of
the
energy
environment
and
energy
in
the
city
of
Boston.
C
It's
already
seeing
we're
seeing
his
dividends
being
there
and
a
lot
of
great
things,
we're
going
to
do
with
the
environment
and
obviously
with
that
comes
a
lot
of
plantings
and
and
what
we
want
to
do
in
the
city
with
green
space.
So
thank
you
for
that.
Emily
Shea
from
my
oddly
commissioned
C
I,
want
to
thank
Emily
for
being
here
with
us
today
as
well.
C
I
want
to
thank
Mahoney's
garden
center
I,
see
the
bags
and
thank
you
Mahoney
for
for
for
being
part
of
this
special
event
and
then,
as
part
of
this
special
occasion,
the
city
of
Boston,
and
it's
always
JetBlue
our
partner.
You
know
I
have
the
great
honor
of
picking
the
winner
to
go
away
once
a
year
and
I
get
the
honor
of
pissing
everyone
else
in
the
room
off.
So
I
want
to
think
I
want
to
thank
Jeff
blue
for
that
for
that
recognition,
I
want
to
thank
the
judges.
C
You
know
this
is
not
easy
as
you,
as
you
see
the
competition
and
you
see
what's
happening
being
a
judge
is
always
very
difficult
because
you
have
so
much
dedication
and
commitment
going
into
people's
jobs.
So
I
want
to
thank
you,
but
most
importantly,
I
want
to
thank
the
gardener's
they're
here
today.
I
want
to
thank
all
of
you
feel
work.
C
I
want
to
thank
you
for
entering
into
this
competition,
but
I
also
want
to
thank
you
because
I
know
that
you
didn't
just
do
you've
gotten
for
this
competition,
or
maybe
a
couple
of
you
did,
but
most
of
you
most
of
you
have
most
of
you,
doctors,
you
love,
you'll,
love
your
areas
and
your
property.
So
thank
you
for
that
and
I'm
gonna
stop
talking.
C
B
So
mayor
don't
go
anywhere,
cuz
Jen's
gonna
tell
you
where
to
stand
now,
actually
so
I.
Thank
you
Mary.
The
contest
couldn't
happen,
as
the
mayor
said,
without
the
generous
sponsors
again
we're
very
grateful
to
JetBlue,
Mahoney's
garden
center
and
all
of
our
sponsors
for
their
continued
support.
This
annual
friendly
competition.
The
winners
here
tonight
are
the
best
of
the
best.
But
among
you
are
special
gardeners
that
have
exhibited
gardening
excellence
year
after
year
and
have
been
inducted
into
the
garden
contest
Hall
of
Fame.
B
These
are
gardeners
that
have
won
at
least
3
times,
and
we
want
them
to
stop
winning.
So
we
put
them
in
the
Hall
of
Fame,
many
of
the
Hall
of
Famers
served
as
judges
in
the
contest
this
year
and
shared
their
gardening
wisdom
with
the
finalists,
while
viewing
their
gardens.
So
you'll
find
a
list
of
all
the
Hall
of
Famers
inducted
over
the
years
into
your
program,
I'd
like
to
recognize
the
six
gardeners
inducted
into
the
Hall
of
Fame
for
2018.
Please
come
forward
when
your
name
is
called
and
receive
your
Hall
of
Fame
Award.
B
B
B
Now,
as
you
know,
after
tonight's
awards
presentation,
the
mayor
spoke
about
this
so
eloquently
all
first
place.
Winners
from
each
category
will
be
entered
into
a
raffle
mayor.
Walsh
will
pull
a
name
mayor.
Walsh
will
pull
that
name
and
announced
the
winner
of
the
grand
prize
provided
by
JetBlue.
Now
we've
received
hundreds
of
applicants
this
year,
so
to
be
selected
as
a
finalist
is
impressive,
but
to
go
on
in
place
in
the
contest
is
a
true
honor.
Now
you
might
find
the
order
of
the
presentation
in
the
event
program.
B
B
B
In
first
place,
Megan
Fox
of
Jamaica
Plain
gardeners
in
the
medium
sized
yard
category
create
a
beautiful
garden
in
500
square
feet
or
less
space.
The
judges
love
the
creativity
of
these
gardens.
Some
is
that
perennials
and
a
wide
variety
of
perfectly
trimmed
trees.
One
judge
remarked
all
finalists
in
this
category
seem
to
be
have
something
beautiful
to
feast
your
eyes
on
at
every
turn.
Congratulations
to
the
medium
yard
garden
winners.
B
Now
the
large
yard
garden
is,
of
course,
plots
of
500
square
feet
or
more.
The
judges
were
impressed
with
the
variations
of
plant
species
used
in
each
of
these
Gardens.
They
particularly
enjoyed
the
use
of
water
features
hardscapes
and
even
bees
in
some
of
these
gardens.
Congratulations
to
each
of
these
large
yard
garden
winners.
Now,
of
course,
we
have
a
very
a
fan:
favorite
the
porch
balcony
or
container
garden
category
winners
in
third
place.
B
We
have
Katherine
Cantrell
and
Danny
Coleman
of
the
south
end
in
second
place,
Michele
topper
of
the
north
end
and
in
first
place
our
future
Hall
of
Famer
Ric
Syrah,
see
a
Beacon
Hill,
the
porch,
balcony
or
container
garden
category
highlights
those
gardeners
that
do
not
have
large
yards
to
plant
judges
in
this
category.
We're
impressed
with
the
passion
and
drive
of
these
gardeners.
The
judges
use
words
such
as
unexpected,
unbelievable,
extraordinary,
unparalleled
and
creative
to
describe
these
spaces.
Congratulations
to
all
of
our
winners.
B
The
shade
garden
category
looks
at
gardens
that
are
planted
in
areas
with
little
or
no
direct
sunlight.
Some
of
these
gardens
occur
naturally,
and
others
are
by
design
with
trees
and
fences.
Judges
in
these
category
describe
these
gardens
as
tranquil
pristine
and
having
a
charming
ambiance.
Congratulations
to
all
of
our
shade
garden
winners.
B
B
B
B
So
the
senior
garden
category
highlights
the
work
of
our
gardeners,
who
are
over
65
years
of
age.
This
is
a
very
competitive
category.
This
year
the
judges
love
the
vibrant
colors
of
flowering
plants,
shrubs
and
perennials
used
in
each
of
these
gardens,
and
the
judges
noted
the
use
of
texture
garden
hardware
and
year-round
interests
that
each
of
these
gardens
had
to
offer.
Congratulations
to
all
of
our
senior
garden
category
winners.
B
B
This
category
encourages
organizations
to
beautify
its
storefront
of
the
yard
and
its
turn
improve
the
aesthetic
of
its
neighborhood
and
impression
for
its
patrons
judges
in
this
category
loved
the
vibrant
colors
and
inviting
nature
of
such
of
these
gardens
and
store
fronts.
One
judge
commented
that
we
should
all
be
so
lucky
if
there
were
businesses
and
organizations
that
are
so
well
maintained
and
careful
in
all
of
the
neighborhoods
throughout
the
city
and
isn't
that
the
truth?
Congratulations
to
all
of
our
storefront
business
and
organization
garden
winners
in
the
community
card
in
category
winners.
B
Community
gardens
are
an
important
recess
resource
for
open
settings
and
for
urban
spaces,
and
we
are
proud
to
see
how
competitive
this
category
was
this
year,
the
judges
describe
these
gardens
that
are
all
located
in
the
Fenway
Victory
Gardens
as
places
that
are
neat
and
well-maintained,
but
also
tell
their
own
stories.
These
Gardens
were
tremendously
appealing
used,
compost,
materials
and
one
even
had
a
solar-powered
fountain
and
pond
that
impressed
the
judges.
Congratulations
to
all
of
our
community
garden
winners.
B
B
B
Now,
congratulations
to
everyone
again
and
now
is
the
mayor's
favorite
moment.
I
would
like
to
invite
norbit's
Frissell
of
JetBlue
he's
going
to
say
a
few
words.
It's
very
good
to
see
you
in
orbit
and
he's
going
to
help
us
also
pull
the
grand
prize
winner
name
of
Mayor
Walsh,
we're
also
joined
by
Yasmin
gentry.
Who
is
our
coordinating
the
regional
marketing
for
JetBlue
as
well,
but
Norbit
if
you're
gonna
say
a
few
words
please
thank
you.
D
Hi
everybody,
so
this
is
the
suffix
University
back
up,
because
you
know
we've
been
so
lucky
for
the
last
few
years
to
be
actually
in
the
park
and
the
weather
looks
like
it
turned
out
actually
a
little
bit
better,
but
it's
great
actually
to
be
here.
Thank
you
to
SELEX,
University
Law
School
to
choose
to
help
set
it
up
here
today.
I
wanted
to
be
here
earlier,
but
Yasmin.
Thank
you
very
much.
I
got
kind
of
hung
up
in
the
operation
and
a
little
bit
of
traffic
in
Boston,
but
that's
okay.
That's
alright!.
D
He's
good
he's
good,
but
no,
no,
we're
just
we're
just
such
a
proud
sponsor
to
be
a
part
of
this
and
and
then
kudos
to
everybody
here
you
know
when
we
think
about
you
know
JetBlue,
we
kind
of
like
inspired
humanity.
You
know
you
look
at
all
of
you
and
what
you
do
in
your
gardens
and
how
you
inspire
so
much
humanity
in
just
in
that
one
small
garden
of
yours
and
how
it
just
inspires
the
entire
neighborhood
and
it's
just
so
extremely
impactful.
But
just
you
know,
congratulations
to
everybody.
D
C
B
Few
more
orders
of
business
now
I'd
like
to
recognize
the
judges.
They
have
a
very,
very
tough
job.
The
judges
were
chosen
for
their
expertise
in
gardening
and
support
of
the
mission
of
this
contest
to
encourage
and
inspire
beautification
of
the
city
through
gardening.
A
list
of
this
year's
judges
can
be
found
in
your
program
at
this
time,
I'd
like
to
to
invite
all
of
our
judges
who
are
present
to
come
up
and
join
the
mayor
for
a
photo,
and
you
give
them
a
round
of
applause.
It's
a
tough
job.
B
B
Ladies
and
gentlemen,
the
judges
of
the
mayor's
garden
contest.
Thank
you
so
much
a
few
more
quick
thank-yous.
Again,
we
want
to
thank
our
sponsors
who
have
helped
with
the
packages.
Thank
you
to
our
grand
prize,
sponsor
JetBlue,
the
Boston
Flower
and
Garden
Show
and
Mahoney's
garden
center
I'd
be
remiss
if
I
didn't
thank
the
amazing
horticultural
division
of
the
city
of
Boston's
parks
department
for
these
beautiful
flowers,
but
also
never
forget
as
amazing
as
you
all
are,
and
your
extraordinary
gardeners
don't
forget
that
that's
city
workers
out
there
in
the
Boston
Public
Garden.
B
Thank
you
for
letting
us
be
here,
even
though
it's
beautiful
and
sunny
outside,
we
invite
you
all
to
enjoy
some
delicious
food
and
refreshments
and
remind
winners
and
judges
to
pick
up
their
gifts
at
the
check-in
table.
Thank
you
once
again
for
participating
in
the
mayor's
garden
contest
and
thank
you
very
much
from
the
bottom
of
our
hearts
for
your
efforts
to
beautify
the
city.
