From YouTube: Boston Fire Department Promotional Ceremony
Description
Mayor Walsh joined with Commissioner Joseph Finn and members of the Boston Fire Department to recognize and celebrate the achievements of the BFD's recently promoted class. This promotional class consists of 10 individuals from diverse backgrounds, with the department as a whole makings strides towards greater diversity and inclusion.
These promotions included two historical landmarks for the city--Deanna McDevitt was elevated to the rank of Fire Chief and became the first woman to hold that poistion. The other was Andre Stallworth, who became the first African-American man appointed as Chief of Operations for the BFD.
B
B
Keep
them
safe,
give
them
all
good
grace,
but
Lord
our
God
as
we
are
here
today.
We
are
also
equally
mindful
that
at
times,
men
and
women
make
the
ultimate
sacrifice
to
serve
and
protect
your
people.
So
we
continue
our
prayers
for
lieutenant
Jason
Menard
and
his
family.
His
friends,
the
City
of
Worcester
in
the
Worcester
Fire
Department.
B
C
C
He
actually
represents
over
300,000
firefighters,
all
across
the
United
States
and
Canada,
also
V
T,
Paris
she's,
a
former
president
longest-serving
president
of
local
7:18,
my
vice
president
John
sorrow
and
the
treasurer
joke
when
we
actually
get
ended
up
coming
over
and
doing
a
little
business
over
it
on
the
credit
union.
Before
this
and
I'm
glad
you
always
there
with
me,
because
I'm
not
the
only
one
with
my
signature
on
the
papers,
it's
always
a
great
day
promotions.
C
C
Kids
get
a
list
of
reading
material
that
will
be
covered
on
the
exam.
They
go.
Welcome
by
the
books.
That's
the
easy
part!
Then
they
invest
countless
hours
going
over
the
ideas
and
concepts
contained
in
all
of
that
material
in
order
to
put
themselves
in
the
best
position
to
compete
on
the
day
of
the
exam.
Whoever
gets
the
highest
score
gets
the
first
job
when
a
vacancy
occurs,
as
chief
green
can
attest
to
actually
chief
green
ended
up,
he's
the
first
one
being
promoted
off
of
the
latest
deputies,
exam,
congratulations
and
I'm
sure.
C
Even
he
will
tell
you
that
that
was
no
easy
task.
It's
a
very
competitive
process,
it's,
but
it's
the
fairest
one.
There
is,
and
there
are
no
guarantees.
I.
Remember
a
recently
promoted
captain
filling
in
on
rescue
two
over
at
Eglin
square.
He
he
said
his
wife
was
talking
to
him
in
the
kitchen.
He
said
his
wife
was
giving
him
a
hard
time
about
all
this
time.
You
spent
locked
up
in
the
house
studying
for
the
exam.
C
C
He
must
have
been
on
the
naughty
list
at
the
time,
but
he
was
pointed
back
to
her
with
the
question
how
many
people
were
in
your
graduating
class?
His
wife
answered
three,
maybe
four
hundred
he
responded
back
and
every
one
of
them
got
a
diploma
right.
She
be
supported,
of
course,
to
which
he
replied.
Do
you
think
he
would
have
studied
a
little
harder
if
they
were
only
gonna
give
only
given
away
ten
or
twenty
diplomas,
and
there
was
no
guarantee
you're
gonna
get
one,
that's
what
every
promotional
candidate
each
one
is
competing
against.
C
The
appears
to
put
themselves
in
the
position
that
these
men
and
women
have
done
today
and
they
and
they
should
be
congratulated
on
their
accomplishment.
Each
has
worked
long
hours
taking
time
away
from
their
families.
I'm
sure
there
have
been
more
more
than
one
family
barbecue
or
a
little
league
game
that
was
missed
in
order
to
get
a
few
more
hours
of
studying
in.
But
today,
all
that
hard
work
and
dedication
pays
off
they've
accomplished
their
goal
and
have
successfully
made
it
to
the
next
step
in
their
careers.
C
Congratulations
to
each
one
of
you
mission
accomplished,
but
also
don't
forget
the
ones
that
gave
you
the
support
and
encouragement
you
received
in
accomplishing
this
goal,
the
ones
that
picked
you
picked
up
the
slack
to
give
you
a
little
bit
more
time.
You
need
it
in
order
to
achieve
this
goal
when
we're
done
with
the
formalities
and
the
pumping
circuit.
C
So
I
can
pomp
and
circumstance
today,
don't
forget
to
say
thank
you
for
their
love
and
support
through
the
process,
and
hopefully
you
spend
a
little
bit
of
that
extra
new
highest
salary
and
take
them
all
out
for
a
nice
meal,
and
hopefully
it's
not
Mickey
D's
again,
congratulations
to
each
one
of
you
great
success
in
taking
the
next
step
and
in
the
next
step
in
your
career.
Thank
you.
D
Thanks
Brian
thanks
Bobby
those
remarks.
You
know
it's
a
special
day
when
you
have
all
the
retired.
A
lot
of
the
old
retirees
come
out
for
a
big
event
and
looking
around
this
room
here
today.
If
you
look
around
I,
see
a
lot
of
old
faces
and
welcome
and
work
enough
countless
years
a
lot
of
you
but
I
just
want
to
say
thank
you
for
coming
out
and
stake
it.
Thank
you
for
your
interest.
D
D
D
You
think
about
it,
not
since
2001,
when
these
positions
for
chief
operations
were
created,
have
we
had
the
opportunity
to
promote
for
to
Chiefs
of
operations
at
the
same
time,
over
18
is
the
two
original
Chiefs
of
operations
to
refresh
some
of
the
retirees.
Memories
was
Chief
of
Operations
Kevin,
Moken
and
chief
operations,
Billy
Hitchcock.
They
were
the
first
two
promoted
and
elevated
to
the
position
of
chief
of
operations,
and,
along
with
that
was
the
deputy
commissioners.
D
Positions
were
established
at
the
same
time
and
Kathleen
judge
commonly
sits
and
that
one
of
those
positions
as
Deputy
Commission
of
administration
of
Finance
this
opportunity
comes
because
the
two
common
Chiefs
of
operations,
Jerrod
Fontana
and
Jackie
Walsh-
were
retiring
in
January
and
March.
Respectfully.
I
want
to
thank
both
of
them,
but
nearly
70
years
of
service
to
the
Boston
Fire
Department
in
the
city
of
Boston.
Thank
you.
D
They
are
the
vital
part
of
the
department
for
the
day-to-day
operations
and
making
sure
things
run
smoothly
and
efficiently
throughout
the
day
weeks.
In
years,
one
is
the
chief
operations
of
field
services
and
the
other
is
the
chief
of
operations
and
port
services.
The
chief
operations
of
field
services
responsible
for
following
divisions,
field
divisions,
one
and
two,
the
training
division,
a
special
operations
division,
which
includes
the
hazmat
technical
rescue
and
marine
operations,
the
fire
alarm
and
communications
division
in
the
office
of
field
services,
which
is
our
liaison
to
our
external
agencies.
D
In
our
victims,
assistance
unit
chief
Operations
Support
Services,
is
responsible
to
following
divisions,
personnel
division,
probably
the
most.
If
you
will
trying
division
in
the
Department,
will
you
deal
with
most
day-to-day
operations
when
I
talk
on
the
level
of
all
the
personnel
issues
that
can
be
associated
with
a
large
urban
fire
department,
fire
prevention,
division,
fleet
and
facilities,
division
and
the
IT
division?
D
Would
like
to
personally
congratulate
all
the
promote
ease
today.
It's
not
often
we
get
to
promote
in
every
rank
of
the
department
from
chief
of
operations,
the
deputy
chiefs,
the
district
Chiefs,
the
captain's
lieutenants
which
we
all
promoted
today.
So
it's
truly
a
special
day,
but
also
today,
we'll
be
phoning.
Our
first
female
district
fire
chief.
D
And
she'll
probably
kill
me
for
saying
this:
captain
the
anima
Kevin
of
engine
39
will
be
promoted
today.
A
true
milestones
department
to
district
Fire
Chief.
So
today,
November
21st
2019
record
is
a
very
special
day
in
the
history
of
the
department
and
at
this
time
I'd
like
to
take
a
moment
introduce
my
boss
may
have
Martin
Walsh
and
thank
him
for
his
level
of
commitment
to
this
department.
D
D
We've
replaced
about
80%
of
our
fleet,
almost
100
percent
of
our
Latta
compliments
and
about
75%
of
our
engine.
Compliments
we've
also
building
new
fire
houses.
There
hasn't
been
a
new
fire
house
built
the
city
and
over
36
years
and
we're
building
them
today.
Come
Monday
old
engine
42
in
Columbus
app
will
be
demoed,
think
about
it.
The
first
fire
house
in
over
36
years
and
a
brand
new,
modern,
state-of-the-art
fire
house
we've
built
on
that
site.
D
We've
renovated
we've
totally
renovated
completely
renovated
a
number
of
houses
and
we're
doing
industrial
cleaning
to
make
sure
the
environments
that
I
firefighters
working
in
those
five
houses
are
clean
and
safe
and
I
could
not
have
done
this
without
the
true
support
of
Mayor
Walsh,
who
has
been
a
true
friend
a
true
supporter
and
a
true
cheerleader
for
the
Boston
Fire
Department.
So
Mia
with
that
I'd
like
you
to
come
up
and
say
a
few
words.
E
Thank
you
very
much,
commissioner,
and
thank
you
for
all
that
you
do
in
your
leadership
here
to
the
command
staff
of
the
fire
department.
Thank
you
as
well
for
your
work
and
to
the
rank-and-file
firefighters
in
this
room
today
and
out
there
today.
Thank
you
for
what
you
do
for
our
city,
keeping
us
safe
every
day
and
every
night
Barbra
TV
in
the
entire
local
718,
which
is
the
same
thing.
Congratulations
to
you,
too,
father
Carey.
Thank
you
for
your
spiritual
guidance
today.
E
E
E
Know,
there's
gonna
be
plenty
of
time
for
me
to
think
these
next
two
gentlemen,
but
to
Jerry
and
Jack
I
want
to
thank
you
for
your
service
to
the
city
of
Boston.
Thank
you
for
your
friendship.
Thank
you
for
your
mentorship.
Thank
you
for
helping
educate
me
on
firefighter
services
and
thank
you
for
what
you
do
for
the
for
the
rank-and-file
for
the
Boston
Fire
Department
every
single
day.
So
thank
you
to
both
of
you.
E
E
And
to
the
firefighters,
be
a
pro-nazi
I
want
to.
Thank
you
for
your
commitment
to
our
city.
We
have
the
greatest
fire
department
in
the
United
States
of
America
and
I
know
that
a
lot
of
Mayors
probably
get
up
and
talk
about
how
great
they're
they
have
the
greatest
fire
department
there
in
their
city
in
their
kind
in
the
country
in
their
city.
But
it's
true
here
in
the
city
of
Boston.
We
in
there's
a
big
part
of
that.
E
It's
a
big
part
because
of
your
performance,
your
leadership,
your
learning,
proving
amongst
yourself
to
be
the
best
Bobby
talked
about
it.
Taking
that
test
and
taking
tests
and
studying
for
it
and
understand
the
importance
of
that
and
everyone
else
who
took
the
test.
But
whether
we
get
you
or
not,
don't
give
up
continue
to
take
that
test,
because
that
shows
a
commitment
to
further
further
your
career
along
in
this
job
and
in
sort
of
now
we
need
you
more
than
ever.
Our
city
is
growing
and
thriving
in
the
last.
E
In
the
last
since
2014
since
I
became
mayor,
we've
added
30
billion
dollars
worth
of
development.
In
the
city
of
Boston,
we've
created
over
we've
invested
over
a
billion
dollars
in
our
schools.
We've
created
over
120
thousand
new
jobs,
50,000
new
people
living
in
our
city.
We
have
a
lot
invested
in
a
lot
at
stake
here
in
the
city
of
Boston.
Your
skills
and
knowledge
are
a
vital
resource
that
we
need
to
protect
our
people
and
our
economy.
E
That's
why
I'm
committed,
as
commissioner
said,
I'm
committed
and
I
remain
committed
to
supporting
the
Boston
Fire
Department.
As
he
said,
we
talked
about
historic
investments
in
technology
and
apparatus.
It's
something
that
to
me
was
really
important.
I
told
the
story.
In
the
past,
after
I
became
mayor,
I
went
down
to
I,
went
down
to
the
9/11
museum
as
I'm
in
Washington
in
New,
York
City
and
I
hadn't
been
down
I'd
been
down
there
before,
but
I
hadn't
done.
A
tour
of
the
of
the
new
museum
down
and
I
went
downstairs.
E
It
was
a
bookstore
and
down
the
bottom,
and
I
asked
the
person
that
I
said.
What's
a
good
book
to
read,
because
we
obviously
know
what
happened
to
9/11
and
the
young
man
was
there,
he
went
on
his
knees.
He
went
into
the
back
of
where
the
the
the
books
are
and
he
pulled
this
small
paperback
book
out.
E
Ultimately,
eventually,
he
got
connected
to
the
outside
and
told
them
that
he
was
in
town
at
chill
and
stairwell
B
and
the
person
other
in
the
underlying
said,
there's
no
tower
to
and
stairwell
B.
He
had
not
known
what
happened
on
the
outside.
What
he
talked
about
in
that
book
was
for
years,
the
New
York
Fire
Department
been
asking
this
asking
the
city
of
New
York
to
upgrade
their
radio
system,
because
they
were
on
several
different
radio
systems
and
as
I
read
that
as
the
mayor
of
Boston
I
said
to
myself.
E
God
forbid
that
we
have
a
situation
where
our
Public
Safety
officials,
our
firefighters,
are
in
a
similar
situation
and
we
didn't
take
the
opportunity
to
make
the
investment
to
basically
save
their
lives
after
them,
saving
so
many
other
people's
lives.
So
that
was
part
of
what
we
did
and
when
Joe
came
in
as
the
Commissioner,
he
talked
about
the
importance
of
that
building.
E
That's
at
your
work
site
understand
that
we
just
began
to
make
the
investments
in
those
areas
we're
working
on
making
sure
that
you're
safe,
so
that
your
families
can
have
you
long
after
you're,
retire
or
when
you,
when
you're
working
in
cancer
prevention
and
safety,
we're
going
to
continue
to
leave
the
country.
The
country
our
city,
has
also
become
more
diverse.
E
50
percent
of
the
people
that
live
in
our
city
of
people
of
color
52%
of
the
households
in
our
city
are
led
by
women,
we're
working
to
reflect
the
diversity
and
our
public
safety
workforce
from
the
entry
level
to
leadership
not
just
in
public
safety,
but
through
everything
that
we
do
today
marks
a
milestone
that
was
mentioned
already
with
the
chief
of
operations,
Andre
Stallworth
and
district
chief
Dianna
McDevitt.
A
pioneer
is
opening
new
doors,
you'll
also
inspire
more
young
people
to
do
the
same
and
follow
in
your
footsteps.
E
Everyone
being
promoted
today
has
demonstrated
the
highest
levels
of
ability
and
professionalism.
You
have
earned
the
right
and
the
responsibility
to
be
a
decision-maker
in
the
Boston
Fire
Department
and
in
the
city
of
Boston.
This
is
the
decisions
that
you
will
make
will
save
lives,
protect
property
and
inspire
other
young
people.
You
will
help
us
achieve
our
most
important
goal
as
a
city,
if
anywhere
anyone
anywhere
without
the
value
of
investing
in
the
firefighters.
All
we
have
to
do
is
look
to.
What's
the
last
week,
a
firefighter
lost
his
life
saving.
E
His
colleague
and
residents,
our
thoughts
and
prayers
remain
with
the
family
and
colleagues,
a
fight,
lieutenant
Jason
minaj
I,
want
to
thank
all
of
you
who
travel
to
Worcester
to
show
your
support.
I
want
to
thank
all
of
you
who
prayed
for
Jason's
family
in
a
very
difficult
time
in
the
City
of
Worcester
firefighters
put
their
life
on
the
line
every
day
to
protect
us.
E
They
deserve
our
support
and
gratitude
the
firefighters
in
this
room.
You
deserve
our
support
and
gratitude.
You
deserve
the
best
possible
leadership
and
that's
what
you're
getting
today.
So
on
behalf
of
the
city
of
Arsenal,
on,
let's
say
thank
you.
Thank
you
to
all
about
firefighters,
congratulations
to
those
being
promoted
today.
It's
congratulations
to
the
family
members
of
those
being
promoted
today.
Our
city
is
extremely
proud
of
all
of
you.
Thank
you.
D
Thanks
man,
before
we
get
into
the
BIOS
this
one
I
had
a
couple
comments,
personal
comments.
They
usually
mention
it
emotion,
ceremonies,
I'm,
gonna,
reiterate
what
Bobby
said.
This
is
no
easy
task
to
study
long
hours
and
to
get
promoted.
It
certainly
is
challenging
time-consuming
and,
more
importantly,
stressful,
not
only
for
the
member
being
promoted,
but
also
for
the
family
and
I
believe
that
we
have
the
ferrous
system,
where
you'll
in
how
you,
how
much
time
and
effort
you
put
in
way
you
land
on
that
list
is
how
we
promote
to
me.
D
That
is
the
ferrous
system,
and
as
long
as
we're
here,
it'll
stay
that
way.
The
system
is
fair
and
equitable
to
everybody.
Everyone
understands
what
is
needed
to
be
done.
What
material
needs
to
be
read
and
mastered
to
score
so
I
just
want
to
say
thank
you
for
the
hard
work
to
the
new
newly
commodious
and
also
to
the
families,
because
it's
certainly
vital
and
important
that
you
be
thanked.
Also
because
there's
a
lot
of
sacrifice
goes
on
in
the
family
as
members
studying
for
promotion
and
advance
in
their
careers.
D
D
D
He
was
promoted
to

at
a
period
in
his
career
he's,
currently
the
deputy
in
division

until
3
18
years,
while
he
has
as
a
deputy
chief
actually
Bobby
now
forward
the
same
day.
He
was
33
years
with
the
PFD.
He
also
is
the
chairperson
of
apparatus.
D
Committee
he's
also
awarded
the
role
of
merit
for
heroism
in
1996.
The
helping
save
two
people
trapped
in
a
fire
and
you
make
a
plane
he's
a
graduate
of
Salem
State
College
also
regret
he
has
a
to
graduate
degree
from
Boston,
College
and
Business
Administration,
but,
more
importantly,
he's
a
graduate
at
Don,
Bosco,
Technical,
High,
School
class
of
1977
and
I
happen
to
be
1978,
so
Bobby
thorn,
wobble
bears
had
to
get
a
shout-out
here.
His
classmate
Ritchie
Paris
is
with
us.
He
was
also
1977
and
Don.
D
D
D
He
was
promoted
to

on
February

promoted
to

on

he
served
a
period
of
time
as
the
city's
fire

He
was
a

of
the

a
Massachusetts

he's
currently
working
to

D
Being
promoted
today
to
deputy
chief
district
chief
James,
green
Jimmy
was
appointed
the
department
on
October
31st,
2002
Halloween,
and
for
those
who
are
familiar
with
the
boss
of
fire
department,
we
seem
to
promote
I,
mean
appoint
an
awful
lot
of
our
dual
classes
happen
to
be
appointed
on
Halloween.
So,
given
that
unique
crowd,
it
was
assigned
to
ladder
29,
he
was
more
lieutenant
on
September
26
2006.
He
was
promoted
to
captain
on
September
10
2010.
D
He
was
promoted
district
fire

on
May

in
district

he's
we
joined
today
by
his
father,
retired
captain
Paul
green
from
the
Marine
unit,
but
I
remember
Paul
when
he
was
that
ladder
seven
a
long
time
ago,
and
it's
also
his
grandfather
James,
was
on
aerial
tower.
It
was
an
active
member
in
the
department
until
he
died
in
1974
from
occupational
cancer
Jimmy.
Please
come
up.
D
Next,
we
have
justify
buying
tally,
being
promoted
of
deputy
chief,
but
I
was
appointed
on
February
22nd
1989
come
on
lieutenant
on
February,

2007
promoted
captain
on

a
good
month
for
you,

2014
he's
worked
at
engine

latter

and
currently
was
a
scientist.
Sock
Brian
Head
comes
from
a
long
lineage
of
firefighters,
Brian's
dad
Bernard
was
killing
the
line
of
duty.
D
It
was
a
science
engine,
30
On
January,
22nd
1974,
when
engine
30
collided
with
the
trash
truck
because
of
severe
icy
roads,
it
was
only
39
years
old
with
eight
years
on
the
job.
His
brother
Bernie
is
assigned
to
division,
1
and
grew
four
also
with
deputy
chief
and
his
brother.
John
was
also
remember.
This
department
signed
engine
17
and
John
passed
away.
Also.
This
is
the
first
time
in
the
fireman's
history
that
we've
actually
going
to
have
two
brothers
serving
as
deputy
chiefs,
so
unique
case.
Well,
first
for
a
lot
of
things
today,.
D
Being
promoted
to
district
chief
today
we
have
Captain
Dennis
Devlin.
He
was
appointed
to
the

2007

a
minute
to

hard
work

competed
in
the
exam
process,
as
the
exam
process
is
established
in
Excel
data,
and
today
is
a
stoical
day
for
the
Boston
Fire
Department,
and
the
most
important
part
of
this
is
that
the
end
is
earned
the
respect
and
admiration
of
her
peers
and,
more
importantly,
her
subordinates,
who
should
be
commended.
Deana
did
this
on
her
own,
studied
the
same
material
and
advanced
in
this
department
all
on
her
own
Indiana.
Thank

much
of
that.
