Description
Mayor Walsh joined the Boston Irish Reporter as they hosted their eighth annual Boston Irish Honors Luncheon at the Seaport Hotel. The event honored Boston Globe columnist Kevin Cullen, Highway Commissioner Tom Tinlin, and Bostonians Annmarie, Nora, and Bill Kennedy for their exemplary public service.
A
A
We
welcome
you
to
the
eighth
annual
Boston
Irish
honors.
This
has
become
a
great
tradition
in
a
short
number
of
years
and
today
we
honor
great
Irish
family,
the
Kennedys
of
Dorchester
Bill
and
Murray,
and
Nora
Tom
Hillen
of
South
Boston
and
Kevin
Colin
of
the
Boston
Globe.
You
can
read
all
about
them
in
the
commemorative
editions
of
the
year
Boston
Irish
reporter,
which
are
right
here
chairs,
and
we
should
begin
the
proceedings
with
a
prayer
and
for
that
as
every
year
we
bring
up
to
the
Reverend
Tom
Kennedy
Tom.
B
Let
us
pray
O,
God
creator,
sustainer
and
Redeemer,
and
the
author
of
our
salvation.
We
thank
you
for
the
gift
of
life.
We
thank
you
for
having
given
us
not
tasks
equal
to
our
powers,
but
powers
equal
to
our
tasks,
as
you
hold
us
to
account
for
the
right
use
of
all
our
powers
and
privileges
guide
us
and
upholding
the
welfare
of
all
your
citizens
and
the
unity
of
our
community.
B
We're
grateful
for
this
gathering,
especially
those
we
honor
today,
the
Kennedy
family,
Norah,
Ann,
Marie
and
Bill
Tim,
tin,
'ln
and
Kevin
Colin,
as
we
recognize
them
for
their
accomplishments.
May
their
lives
of
service
and
generosity
inspire
each
of
us
to
extend
our
reach
beyond
our
grasp
that
we
too
may
live
lives
of
service
generosity
with
humility.
B
Finally,
we
thank
you
for
those
we
honor
the
gift
of
their
lives
of
service
for
this
land
and
country
which
has
bestowed
upon
us
such
opportunity
and
freedom
help
us
to
do
well.
The
work
you
have
given
us
to
do
for
the
good
of
all
and
for
you
and
finally,
we
asks
that
you
bless
this
food
to
our
use
that
we
who
are
to
partake.
It
may
always
remember
those
who
go
without
in
your
name.
We
pray,
amen.
A
A
Ladies
and
gentlemen,
the
Irish
Consul
was
here
once
again,
as
she
is
every
year
for
Nuala
Quinlan
is
right
here,
thank
you
and
the
chairman
of
our
of
our
luncheon.
Today,
who's
done
such
a
magnificent
job,
you'll
be
hearing
from
him
later,
but
we
want
to
introduce
him
at
this
point.
Aiden
Brown,
Aiden
great,
to
see
you.
A
It
says
here
former
state
representative
from
Charlestown,
but
he
is
so
much
more
than
that
and
has
been
a
great
friend
to
so
much
many
of
us
and
has
a
wonderful
book
out,
which
is
called
they
will
my
friends,
Jack,
Bobby
and
and
Ted
Kennedy,
and
it's
a
wonderful
memoir
and
history
of
Boston
politics
for
the
last
60
years.
Gerry
Doherty
is
in
the
presence
of
us.
A
Tremendous
round
of
enthusiasm
there
and
the
press
secretary
for
Kevin
White
in
that
election
50
years
ago
was
mrs.
Flavin's
youngest
boy,
Richard
and
I
was
a
I
was
Kevin's
press
secretary.
We
all
have
skeletons
in
our
closets
and
the
night
after
the
election
I
accompanied
Kevin
white,
as
we
were
out
to
Jamaica
Plain
and
paid
a
courtesy
call
to
the
retiring
Mayor,
John,
F
Collins,
now
Kevin,
white
and
John
F
Collins
in
the
great
Irish
tradition,
did
not
like
each
other
very
much.
A
But
it
was
very
cordial
on
this
particular
evening
because
there
was
a
ceremonial
changing
of
the
guard
and
at
one
point
mrs.
Collins
came
out
from
the
kitchen
into
the
den
was
seating
with
a
tray
of
cookies
and
and
coffee,
and
she
went
up
to
Kevin
White
and
she
said
mr.
mayor.
Would
you
like
some
cookies
and
coffee?
He
said
no,
thank
you
and
she
goes
back
into
the
kitchen
and
Kevin
turns
to
John
Collins
and
he
says
I,
don't
think
I'm
ever
gonna
get
used
to
people
calling
me
mayor.
A
A
And
the
reason
that
I
relate
that
story
is
that
our
next
speaker,
besides
being
a
past
honoree
of
this
great
luncheon
and
being
endorsed
this
year
by
the
Boston
Globe,
the
Boston
Herald
and
as
of
this
morning,
the
Dorchester
reporter
is
here
joining
us.
Would
you
please
welcome
the
emperor
of
Boston,
his
honor,
the
mayor,
Marty
Walsh,.
D
Thank
you
very
much.
Dick
I
am
yeah
I
just
said
to
Kevin
:,
don't
write
that
the
emperor
think
it's
great
to
be
here
today,
and
it
was
great
this
morning
to
wake
up
and
get
the
endorsement
of
the
only
paper
that
got
to
write
four
years
ago.
The
Doster
reporter,
when
they
endorse
me
four
years
ago
and
I,
want
to
thank
the
Doster
reporter
for
that
for
that
endorsement
four
years
ago,
because
certainly
I
put
me
over
the
top,
but
all
seriousness.
D
Thank
you
to
us
a
reporter
for
for
delivering
news
for
a
long
time
in
our
neighborhood
I
was
a
state
representative
before
I
was
the
mayor
of
Boston
and
in
that
paper
is
our
paper,
our
local
town
town
paper,
and
it
gets
strong
every
every
day
and
I'm
on
it.
I
was
truly
honored
to
receive
the
endorsement
today
from
the
paper
I
want
to.
Thank
also
for
this
event,
Edie
and
Bill
and
Maureen
feel
great
work
in
having
this
incredible
tradition
that
you
started
here,
along
with
the
Boston
Irish
reporter
and
the
Boston
neighborhood
news.
D
She
wasn't
given
a
shut
up,
cuz
she's,
not
here,
but
my
state
senator
will
be
here
in
a
little
while
and
I
want
to
thanks
and
Linda
docena
for
her
great
work
as
well
in
the
state
Senate
they're
in
session
today
and
she'll,
be
here
in
a
little
bit.
I
want
to
thank
you.
I
just
want
to
give
a
couple
shoutouts.
D
That
was
only
a
couple:
people
that
were
missed
in
the
hall,
so
I'm
gonna
just
get
you
Reverend,
Tom,
Kennedy,
I,
know
if
you
were
mentioned,
I
want
to
thank
you
for
being
here
with
us
today:
father
dark
Conway
and
father
Jack
or
her,
and
two
people
who
worked
the
streets
of
Boston
as
good
as
anybody
working
to
reduce
the
violence
in
our
streets
are
out
there
walking
the
walk
doing
the
chart.
So
thank
you
both
for
being
here
with
us
today.
D
Concert
general
finola,
Quinlan,
Thank,
You
famila
for
being
here
as
well
for
being
with
us
today
we
have
a
I
think
we
have
one
one:
anyone
in
those
Irish
sports.
We
have
this
two
sports
in
Ireland,
one
is
football:
the
Irish
football
and
one
is
hurling
and
that's
the
other
one,
and
we
have
a
Hurley
from
Connie
cork
here
today.
Where
is
he
silly?
It
was
all
in
the
hallway
where,
as
they
stand
up
where
the
captain
in
the
curling
team
he's
with
us
today,.
D
Cork
has
a
great
hurling
tradition
down
in
Cork
and
unfortunately
for
Cork
this
year,
Galway
won
the
island
championship,
but
other
you
know
we
still.
We
still
love
you
and
welcome
you
here
to
Boston
cuz.
This
is
half
the
room
was
probably
filled
with
people
from
Cork,
so
you're
on
you're
in
good,
good,
good,
good
good
company.
Today,
I
want
to
congratulate
the
honorees
I
want
to
thank
Kevin
Cullen,
who
writes
with
his
current
about
the
soul
of
our
city
and
has
done
some
incredible
coverage
of
the
conflicts
in
Ireland
and
written
about
both.
D
What's
happened
in
Belfast
and
what's
happened
in
Galway
and
what's
happened
in
Cork
and
what's
happened
in
Dublin
and
all
over
the
country
and
Kevin
is
an
incredible
writer
for
our
city
and
for
the
Boston
Globe
and
camera
I
want
to
congratulate
you
for
your
recognition
here
receiving
today.
Tom
eat
inland
another
great
public
servant.
We
know
what
a
courageous
well-loved
human
being
that
he
is
I
was
joking.
D
With
a
minute
ago,
we're
on
the
circuit,
kinda
together,
Tommy's
been
recognized
by
a
couple
of
different
organizations
in
the
city
for
the
great
work
that
he's
done
as
a
public
employee
and
in
his
he's
there
to
help
everyone
that
asks
and
sometimes
I,
don't
ask
he's
just
there
to
help
them
and
he's
a
great
person.
But
I,
don't
know
if
a
lot
of
people
in
this
room
know
that
during
the
st.
D
Patrick's
Day
breakfast
that
Linda
hosts
almost
every
single
politician
that
goes
up
and
gives
this
spiel
Tommy
wrote
it
and
I'm
serious
he's
rotted.
So
if
you
get
mad
about
a
joke,
it's
his
fault
but
I
want
to
I
want
to
thank
Tommy
and
his
wife
were
here
in
this
family.
So
congratulations,
Tommy
on
well
deserve
recognition.
Today
by
all
of
you,.
D
And
the
Kennedy
family
bill
in
Emory
and
especially
Nora.
Congratulations
as
well.
Everyone
talks
about
Bill
Kennedy.
Everyone
knows
Billy's
history.
You
know
he
was
chief
of
staff
of
Speaker.
He
went
on
to
he's
doing
great
law
stuff.
He
was
doing
everything
but
I'll
tell
you.
The
paw
in
the
field
is
actually
Nora.
I
was
at
an
event
yesterday
over
Suffolk
construction,
and
she
was
running
the
show
so
I
want
to
ignore
as
the
next
generation.
So
I
want
to
thank
the
Kennedy
family
as
well.
D
D
You
know
we
are
a
proud
city
in
a
lot
of
different
ways,
and
we
don't.
We
owe
our
tradition
to
our
city,
strengths
and
the
group
of
people
that
we
really
owe
it
to
is
the
immigrant
community,
the
immigrants
that
came
before
us
and
we've
gotten
lost
I
think
a
little
bit
in
society
this
last
year
and
about
what's
going
on
in
Washington
DC
and
the
attack
on
immigrants,
and
you
know
when
I,
sometimes
when
I
come
to
an
event
and
we're
Irish.
D
Americans
must
be
on
the
front
line
to
continue
to
fight
and
welcome
immigrants,
to
protect
them
from
persecution
and
to
picked
up
from
hate,
protect
them,
for
whatever
reasons
they
came
to
this
country.
Many
of
our
ancestors
and
relatives
that
came
to
this
country
were
undocumented.
I,
remember
not
too
long
ago.
There's
a
couple
of
people
in
this
room
are
undocumented.
One
just
raised
his
hand
down
the
back.
Don't
do
it
again,
we'll
check
your
papers.
D
We
should
never
forget
that
we
should
never
forget
that
and
I
know
to
most
of
the
people
that,
when
I'm
preaching
to
the
choir
but
I
also
know
not
all
the
people
in
Rome
my
preaching
to
the
choir
and
that's
why
I'm
saying
it,
because
today
and
I
don't
know
fully
why
ed
and
Billy
and
Maureen
side
of
this
but
I
know
why
they
started.
They
started
to
honor
the
Boston
Irish.
D
They
started
to
honor
the
recognize
the
families
in
our
city
that
have
contributed
so
much
to
the
economy
of
Boston
to
the
growth
of
Boston,
whether
it's
through
philanthropic
with
men
or
whether,
through
writing
for
papers,
whether
it's
serving
is
elected
official,
whether
it's
business
is
whether
it's
being
just
a
generous
person.
That's
why
they
started
this
to
remember
where
we
came
from
and
I
think
it's
important
for
us
today
that
that
we
we
understand
and
remember
the
way
the
immigrants
that
are
coming
today.
D
Those
those
are
the
families
of
the
future
someday
there'll,
be
somebody
standing
maybe
at
this
microphone,
maybe
at
this
luncheon
25
25
years
from
now,
whose
mother
might
have
come
from
Honduras
and
father.
Could
have
came
from
El
Salvador
and
they
met
at
a
hall
or
restaurant
nice
Boston
in
25
years
later
or
30
years
later.
D
D
I
ask
all
of
you
to
think
about
this
I'm
thinking
the
Boston
Irish
reporter
and
all
of
you
here
today
for
honoring
this
immigrant
legacy
and
strengthening
our
city
as
we
do
that.
That's
why
we're
here
today
so
again
to
the
Dorchester
reporter
to
George,
Boston
I,
know
George
rad-foot
Boston
Irish
reporter
all
of
you
today,
Tom
eat
inland
and
the
tendon
family,
Kevin
and
Kevin's
family,
Billy
and
Billy's
family
and
to
all
the
other
people.
Here.
Congratulations
on
a
well-deserved
recognition
for
what
you
you
mean
to
the
city
of
Boston.
Thank
you
very
much.
