Description
Mayor Walsh joins Boston Pops Conductor, Keith Lockhart, and other officials to discuss Boston's 4th of July festivities at the DCR Hatch Memorial Shell.
A
Please
join
me
in
welcoming
governor
Charlie
Baker
mayor
Marty,
Walsh,
Secretary
of
Public
Safety
and
security,
Daniel
Bennett
and
our
own
Boston
Pops
conductor.
Keith
Lockhart
I'd
also
like
to
extend
a
warm
welcome
to
Matthew
Witt
coasts
from
Eaton
Vance
to
2018
Boston
Pops,
fireworks,
spectacular,
presenting
sponsor
as
well
as
Elle
mayor's
from
Bloomberg
television
and
radio,
the
events,
media
sponsor
and
major
sponsor
each
one
of
these
entities
has
made
an
initial
three-year
commitment
to
sponsor
this
extraordinary
event.
Beginning
last
year.
A
These
numbers
come
from
an
economics
professor,
the
head
of
the
economics
department
at
Williams
College,
who
was
studying
the
impact
of
the
Boston
Symphony
and
Boston
Pops
on
Boston
and
Massachusetts,
so
we're
very,
very
fortunate
to
be
part
of
a
singular
annual
celebration,
absolutely
unique
to
the
city
of
Boston.
It's
appreciative,
citizens.
It
speaks
volumes
about
the
importance
of
this
event
to
have
the
top
representatives
of
the
state
and
city
with
us
here
today
to
say
a
few
words.
A
B
Thank
You
Marc,
as
you
can
tell
from
my
accent
I'm,
not
a
native
Bostonian
I,
was
born
in
Washington
DC,
but
when
the
Senators
left
town
the
second
time
my
allegiance
came
to
the
Red
Sox
and
I've
been
very
fortunate
to
work
for
the
Boston
Symphony
and
Boston
Pops
for
all
these
years.
This
is
an
amazing
event.
B
It's
actually
the
first
time
I've
been
here
because
I'm,
usually
at
Tanglewood,
doing
some
concerts
out
there,
but
the
people
behind
me,
the
men
and
women
of
Public
Safety,
the
men
and
women
that
put
the
event
together,
are
to
be
applauded
for
everything
they
do
and
keeping
us
safe
and
to
enjoy
the
premiere
event.
I
think
we
can
say
this
is
the
premiere
event
in
the
country
to
celebrate
our
nation's
birth,
I'd
like
to
introduce
the
governor
of
the
Commonwealth
of
Massachusetts,
Charlie
Baker,.
C
This
4th
of
July
celebration
and
I
think
in
many
ways
the
one
thing
I
would
suggest
that
we
all
do
is
remember
that
this
is
in
fact
honoring
all
those
who
came
before
us
and
many
of
whom
paid
the
ultimate
price
to
preserve
and
protect
our
Liberty.
And
that's
one
that
we
should
never
forget
on
this
4th
of
July
weekend.
C
We
obviously
are
thrilled
to
continue
to
be
part
of
this
amazing
celebration
here
in
the
hatch
shell
and
consider
it
to
be
truly
one
of
the
best
public-private
partnerships
that
we
in
the
city,
and
so
many
of
our
corporate
sponsors
are
part
of
every
single
year.
And
it's
going
to
be
a
very
hot
night
and
we
hope
everybody
comes
prepared
to
recognize
and
understand
that,
and
with
this
that
I'd
like
to
turn
it
over
to
the
mayor
of
Boston,
Marty
Walsh.
D
Thank
you
gov
and
I.
This
is
a
great
event
in
the
sense
of
state
and
city
and
in
different
cities,
collaborating
together
to
move
forward
to
make
sure
we
have
a
great
safe
event
here.
So
I
want
to
thank
the
governor,
his
team
secretary
Bennett
for
their
great
work.
I
also
want
to
thank
heat
Lockhart
and
the
sponsors
as
well
Eaton
Vance
in
Bloomberg
for
for
broadcasting
and
sponsoring
this
great
event
and
I'd
like
to
thank,
also
joined
us
today
is
Commissioner
Bill
Evans
from
Boston
Police
Department,
Chief,
Willie
gross
in
the
process.
D
Police
Department
Commissioner
Joe
fain
from
the
Boston
Fire
Department,
along
with
chief
Huli
from
Boston
EMS,
who
worked
very
closely
with
the
colonel
and
the
secretary
to
make
sure
that
that
we
have
a
great
event.
Boston's
excited
for
the
2018
Boston
Pops
fireworks
spectacular.
It's
one
of
the
the
best
holiday
traditions
that
we
have
here
in
Boston
and
in
Massachusetts,
there's
no
better
place
to
celebrate
the
independence
than
the
place
where
it
all
began
this
year.
As
we
say
every
year
and
I
know,
Keith
will
talk
about.
D
D
It
made
this
possible,
including
the
Boston
Pops
I,
want
to
thank
the
Massachusetts
Department
of
Conservation
and
Recreation
all
of
the
state
and
local
and
federal
safety
officials,
for
making
sure
that
this
is
a
great
experience
and
a
safe
night
for
everyone,
and
we've
been
working
very
closely
with
the
state
and
our
state
and
federal
partners
on
public
safety.
They're
gonna
talk
more
about
the
plans
here,
but
I
want
to
remind
everyone
that
the
fourth
of
July
is
a
family
event,
be
smart.
D
If
you
see
something
say
something:
there'll
be
increased
police
presence
here
and
throughout
the
city
of
Boston.
So
for
the
folks
in
Boston,
all
of
the
resources
will
not
be
here,
they'll
be
all
throughout
the
city
of
Boston.
So
we
will
have
a
full
display
of
support
in
our
neighborhoods
as
well.
There'll
be
some
road
closures,
so
we're
encouraging
people
to
take
public
transportation,
walk
or
take
your
bike
when
possible.
If
you're
looking
for
information
go
to,
Boston
Pops
is
fourth
of
July
dog
for
more
information.
D
D
That's
what
we're
concerned
about
making
sure
that
people
are
safe,
so
whether
you're
watching
the
fireworks
on
the
Esplanade
or
attending
Harborfest
or
having
a
cookout
in
your
neighborhood,
we're
asking
it
to
be
safe
and
to
make
sure
that
you're
safe
in
those
places
it's
going
to
be
very
hot
Wednesday.
It's
gonna
be
hard
all
week
we're
talking
people
to
stay
hydrated,
keep
an
eye
on
any
elderly
neighbors
that
you
might
have.
If
you
see
any
homeless
individual
in
need
of
help,
we're
asking
you
to
call
9-1-1.
So
we
can
address
that
situation.
D
We're
asking
people
leave
the
fireworks
to
professionals.
This
is
not
really
associated
with
today's
event,
but
last
night
we
had
a
lot
of
calls
in
our
neighborhoods
of
fireworks,
going
off
we're
asking
you
to
leave
it
to
the
professionals
because
they're
dangerous
and
somebody
could
be
hurt.
We're
asking
you
to
be
careful
and
not
to
be
lighting
off
fireworks,
be
respectful
of
the
people
that
live
on
the
streets
that
you
live
around
it's
illegal
to
set
off
fireworks
in
our
neighborhood
and
we're
gonna
have
a
police
department
out
there
in
force.
D
Looking
for
people
lighting
off
fireworks,
and
the
last
thing
we
want
to
do
is
be
locking
people
up
for
lighting
fireworks
off,
but
they're
illegal.
If
you
drink
we're
asking
you
to
be
safe,
never
drink
and
drive,
and
this
is
an
incredible
tradition.
It's
a
time
when
our
city
really
shines
and
I
want
to
thank
everyone
and
wish
everyone
a
happy.
Fourth,
and
now,
with
that
I'd
like
to
bring
up
secretary
Bennett,.
E
Thank
you
very
much.
This
is
an
incredible
team
effort
from
Public
Safety,
but
it
does
start
at
the
top,
with
Governor
Baker
and
mayor
Walsh,
working
together
to
make
sure
that
everybody
has
the
resources
to
make
the
effort
to
make
this
a
safe
event.
The
planning
has
gone
into
this
for
months.
It's
the
same
type
of
plan,
but
not
exactly
the
same
plan
that
we've
had
for
a
number
of
years.
It
improves
every
year
as
we
take
and
learn
from
the
past
experiences.
E
That's
out
there
is
the
population
there's
going
to
come
down
to
this,
the
people
that
are
going
to
come
down
to
the
pups,
the
people
that
are
going
to
see
something
say
something
that's
the
best
investigative
tool
that
we
have,
because
those
are
the
people
that
are
going
to
be
everywhere.
If
you
see
something
say
something
go
to
a
police
officer,
go
to
a
trooper,
give
them
the
information
and
they'll
do
the
right
thing.
E
F
This
July
4th
I
am
as
excited
thrilled
honored
to
be
here,
as
I
have
ever
been.
I
really
think
that
this
year,
due
to
our
incredibly
supportive
partners
at
Bloomberg
and
at
Eaton,
Vance
I
think
the
Boston
Pops
is
put
together
the
program
that
I
I
don't
remember
ever
having
been
more
proud
of
a
program
that
we're
doing
so.
I'm
gonna
tell
you
just
a
little
bit
about
what's
in
store
for
you
on
July
4th,
we
have
an
incredible
series
of
guest
artists.
F
We
I
can't
I'm
pinching
myself
stole
that
we
managed
to
get
them
all
in
the
same
place.
At
the
same
time,
we're
joined
by
pop
superstar
Rachel
Platten,
who
grew
up
in
Newton
Center,
as
some
of
you
probably
know,
and
she
will
be
singing
some
of
her
hits,
including
my
fight
song,
which
is
my
eight-year-olds
favorite
song.
This
had
nothing
to
do
with
the
selection
process.
However,
we
are
also
joined
by
the
classic
folk
rock
duo.
F
So
much.
So,
let's
hear
it
for
Rhiannon.
Yes,
so
much
so
that
last
year
she
was
granted
a
MacArthur
Foundation,
the
so-called
genius
grant,
and
in
the
committee's
recommendation
for
allowing
me
to
read
what
they
said.
The
organization
noted
Giddins,
drive
to
understand
and
conveyed
the
nuances,
complexities
and
interrelationships
between
musical
traditions
is
enhancing
our
musical
present
with
a
wealth
of
sounds
and
textures
from
the
past.
This
leaves
out
one
very
important
element.
She
is
an
electric
performer
on
stage.
F
I
I
think
she
is
so
perfect
for
a
concert
that
celebrates
where
we
all
come
from
and
where
we're
all
going,
and
as
if
that
weren't
enough,
we
were
lucky
enough
to
manage
to
land
Rita
Moreno
a
true
extraordinary,
American
performer,
a
legend.
If
there
is
one
86
years,
young
one
of
12
people
in
history
who
have
won
all
four
of
the
great
entertainment
awards,
the
Oscar,
the
Grammy,
the
Tony
and
the
Emmy
Rita
will
be
joining
us
as
part
of
our
Bernstein
tribute
this
year.
F
One
of
the
very
important
elements
of
our
program
with
the
Boston
Pops
is
that
we
will
be
paying
tribute
to
Leonard
Bernstein
on
the
occasion
of
the
centennial
of
his
birth
Leonard
Bernstein,
who
was
born
in
Lawrence
Mass
and
grew
up
in
Roxbury
and
Newton
and
Brookline,
and
went
to
Boston
Latin
and
went
to
Harvard
and
had
a
lifelong
relationship
with
both
the
Boston
Pops
and
the
Boston
Symphony.
And,
as
you
also
probably
know,
Rita
Moreno
won
her
Academy
Award
for
the
role
of
Anita
in
the
1961
iconic
movie
West
Side
Story.
F
She
will
be
reprising
that
role
on
this
stage.
For
the
first
time
in
many
years,
she
will
be
singing
America
with
us,
as
well
as
somewhere
and
as
well
as
being
joined
by
the
Boston
Pops
for
playing
some
of
Bernstein's,
most
beloved
material.
She
will
also
join
us
for
a
very
special
moment
in
this
concert.
We
tried
celebrate
the
elements
that
bring
us
together.
F
The
elements
that
make
us
Americans
and
one
of
the
things
I
think
we
can
all
agree
on-
is
the
important
role,
the
elemental,
essential
role
that
immigration
has
played
in
forming
this
country.
All
of
us
everybody
I'm
looking
at
pretty
much,
is
the
offspring
of
people
who
came
to
this
country
seeking
a
better
light
life
and
seeking
to
connect
with
the
ideal
that
the
world
has
out
for
America.
F
You
know
it's
occurred
to
me
after
23
years
of
doing
this
that
it's
I'm
in
a
very
fun
position.
We
get
to
get
all
the
applause
of
all
those
hundreds
of
thousands
of
people,
we're
the
people,
the
cameras
focus
on
for
the
millions
of
people
beyond
that.
But
it's
important
that
we
say
thank
you
to
so
many
people
behind
the
scenes
who
make
an
incredible
public
event
like
this
work.
F
To
know
that
we
will
have
national
carriage
on
Bloomberg
both
on
the
Bloomberg
channel
as
well
as
streamed,
live
on
Bloomberg
comm,
that
we
will
have
a
wonderful
opportunity
for
local
broadcast
to
everyone
around
here
via
WHDH
and
that
we
will
also
stream
live
on
Boston,
Pops,
fourth
of
July
calm
and
on
Boston
calm.
So
we
we
can't
get.
We
can't
wait
to
get
started.
It's
only
48
hours
away
and
ticking
happy
4th
of
July
to
all
of
you.
Stay
hydrated.
B
Thank
You,
Pete
I.
Think
if
you
look
behind,
you
you'll
see
the
infrastructure
to
put
this
event
on
in
the,
in
addition
to
the
manpower
of
our
public
safety
people
we're
very
fortunate,
but
first
I
want
to
say
the
two
people
may
be
most
responsible
for
building
this
event
to
what
it
has
become:
Arthur,
Fiedler
and
David.
Moog
are,
and
a
year
or
so
ago
mr.
Moog
are
retired
and
handed
us
the
reins
for
the
event
and
but
without
the
next
two
people
we
probably
couldn't
do
it.
G
Good
morning,
everyone
I'm
impressed
that
very
few
of
you
started
melting,
yet
so
hot
you
know.
First
of
all,
let
me
just
say
thank
you
to
those
in
public
safety.
You
look
around
and
you
can
already
see
the
presence
building
here
in
Boston
and
I
think
that
that's
so
important,
as
you
think
about
coming
down
here
on
the
fourth
of
July,
we
have
quite
an
event
planned.
Eden
Vance
is
delighted
to
return
as
the
presenting
sponsor
the
Boston
Pops.
This
is
our
second
year.
We
will
be
promoting
this
for
the
next
two
years.
G
B
So,
as
Keith
said,
we're
being
carried
on
Bloomberg,
it's
very
exciting
and
I
wanna
introduce
now
a
man
who
has
a
very
long
title.
Our
mayor
is
global
head
of
Bloomberg
television
and
radio,
and
is
our
media
sponsor,
but
we
all
call
al
al
has
become
a
great
friend
of
us,
and
so
we
just
call
him
out
so
I'd
like
to
introduce
out.
H
Bloomberg
is
honored
to
begin
our
second
year
as
the
media
presenter
and
a
sponsor
for
this
iconic
event.
The
Boston
Pops
fireworks
spectacular
as
many
things
at
Bloomberg.
We
believe
it
demonstrates
the
importance
the
arts
play
in
a
vibrant
community
mark
Volpe
and
the
BSO
Eaton
Vance,
under
the
leadership
of
Tom
Foust
and
Mike
Bloomberg
have
committed
time
money
and
resources
to
making
this
concert
a
major
focal
point,
but
we're
not
alone.
The
generous
support
we
get
from
the
city
of
Boston
and
the
Commonwealth
provide
is
never
fully
recognized.
H
Their
role
is
very
much
like
an
iceberg.
The
10%
we
see
above
the
water
is
nothing
compared
to
the
90
percent
below
providing
the
foundation
making
all
of
this
possible.
And,
finally,
we
can
never
forget
David
new
guards,
vision
and
continued
contributions
to
our
community.
Please
remind
everyone
that
this
event
would
not
happen
without
their
support
in
the
early
years.
The
only
way
to
enjoy
the
concert
was
coming
down
to
the
hatch,
shell
and
grabbing
a
spot
on
the
Oval
I.
H
Did
that
many
times
as
the
crowds
grew
and
spread
along
the
Charles
radio
and
television
broadcasts
were
added.
More
recently,
the
internet
expanded
the
reach
globally
and
now
mobile
viewing
who
would
have
thought
this
year
in
addition
to
Bloomberg

Seven

the

its
boston.com

Easy

allowing
you
to
enjoy
the

the
Rose
Kennedy
Greenway,
not
only
making
it
more
accessible
with
the
concept
more
accessible,
but
also
to
call
attention
to
the
rolls
simple
things
play
in
uniting
the
community.
We
all
remember
the
central
artery.
What
was
once
an
eyesore
dividing
the
city
has
been
replaced
by
a
beautiful
walking
and
gathering
space.
It
is
a
place
to
enjoy
the
beauty
of
our
city
and
the
vibrant
role
it
plays
in
its
success.
H
We
reached
out
to
other
cultural
institutions,
the
Museum
of
Science,
the
Museum
of
Fine
Arts,
the
Institute
of
Contemporary
Art,
the
Boston
Children's
Museum,
and
the
Greater
Boston
Food
Bank.
They
generously
lent
their
resources
to
support
and
promote
Boston's
celebration
of
the
forth.
These
requests
were
simple
to
each
institution
and
it
was
a
quick
yes
front
with
the
response.
The
success
can
be
measured
by
the
posts
on
social
media
and
the
big
banner
hanging
on
the
Museum
of
Science
right
down.
H
They
were
honored
to
help
now,
there's
more
to
a
city
than
businesses,
buildings
and
streets.
Our
cultural
community
not
only
helped
define
who
we
are
but
unites
us.
The
power
that
comes
from
working
as
one
community
will
produce
great
things.
Keith
Lockhart
in
the
Boston
Pops
will
once
again
provide
a
beautiful
evening
of
music
and
entertainment.
We
must
not
let
the
power
the
pride
and
the
fun
and
at
11:00
p.m.
on
July
4th.
H
Let
this
concert
define
why
Boston
is
truly
the
hub
of
the
universe,
a
shining
example
of
how
a
great
city
embraces
the
Arts
and
philanthropy.
We
encourage
other
institutions
to
join
us,
making
the
biggest
and
best
celebration
of
America's
birthday
in
the
place
where
it
all
began.
Boston.
Thank
you.

Want
them
to
take
public
transportation,
we
want
them
to
dress
safely,
follow
directions.
If
anything
were
to
happen,
there
look
for
a
person
in
uniform.
They
will
get
you
the
right
information
at
the
right
time,
but
come
and
enjoy.
The
concert
is
going
to
be
a
wonderful
concert,
great
fireworks
at
a
wonderful
event,.
H
H
Next,
to
where
the
beer
garden
is
they'll,
be
about
seating
for
50
veterans,
as
well
as
their
families
and
plenty
of
extra
space
to
to
bring
towels
and
watch
there'll
be
a
giant
video
screen.
One
of
our
anchors
Janet
will
be
down
there.
Interacting
it'll
play
a
prominent
role
throughout
the
broadcast.
