Description
The Legislative Assembly of British Columbia
2nd Session
42nd Parliament
A
Member
for
west
vancouver
capilano,
mr
speaker
and
of
course
I
am
very
happy
to
be
here
october-
marks
a
month-long
celebration
of
the
outstanding
achievements
of
women
throughout
canada's
history.
A
History
was
all
was
often
written
without
women,
but
in
the
last
decades,
there's
been
a
lot
to
rewrite
the
largely
masculine
history
of
british
columbia
to
include
the
incredible
women
who
accomplish
such
great
things.
Now
I'm
embarrassed
to
say
that
I
only
just
read
clewick
by
emily
carr
over
the
summer.
I
walk
by
her
house
every
day
and
I
thought
it
was
time
that
I
learned
a
little
bit
more
about
her.
A
Today,
I'd
like
to
take
a
moment
to
acknowledge,
but
a
few
I
apologize
to
those
I
miss,
but
it's
only
a
two-minute
statement
as
many
of
you
know
and
have
read
as
you
walk
through
the
rotunda
down
in
the
main
entrance
area
in
1918,
mary
ellen
smith,
the
prominent
suffragist
in
british
columbia
became
the
first
woman
elected
to
the
legislature
of
british
columbia.
In
1972,
rosemary
brown
became
the
first
black
woman
elected
to
a
provincial
legislature
in
all
of
canada.
A
In
1993,
a
former
bcmla
kim
campbell
became
the
first,
and
I
note
sadly,
the
only
female
canadian
prime
minister
and
I
would
be
remiss
to
not
mention
there
are
women
in
this
house
today
and
I
hope
they
don't
mind
being
acknowledged.
In
2009,
the
member
from
vancouver
kensington
became
the
first
person
of
filipino
heritage
to
be
elected
to
the
bc
legislature.
A
In
2011,
the
member
for
prince
george
became
the
first
woman
to
serve
as
attorney
general
and
in
2016.
The
member
for
vancouver
mount
pleasant
became
the
first
first
nations
woman
elected
to
the
bc
legislature
and
to
hold
a
cabinet
position.
Women
understand
the
importance
of
being
role
models
and
they
understand
the
weight
of
being
first.
Thank
you
very
much,
mr
speaker,
and
to
all
the
women
who
have
made
history.
