Description
The Legislative Assembly of British Columbia
3rd Session
42nd Parliament
A
Member
for
west
vancouver
capilano.
Thank
you,
mr
speaker.
On
june
28,
1969
police
raided
the
stonewall
inns,
a
gay
club
in
greenwich
village,
resulting
in
protests
and
riots.
The
lgbtq
plus
community
demanded
they'd
be
acknowledged
and
be
able
to
live
free
from
discrimination
and
hostility
because
of
that
date
june
was
chosen
as
pride
month
and
is
a
chance
for
all
of
us
to
come
together
and
celebrate
the
acceptance
of
sexual
diversity,
as
well
as
shine
a
light
on
some
of
the
issues
facing
lgbtq
people.
A
Today,
I'd
like
to
talk
about
a
critical
issue
facing
lgbtq
plus
youth
and
the
work
that
family
services
of
the
north
shore
is
doing
to
help
them.
Lgbtq
plus
youth
are
often
victims
of
hate
crime,
bullying
discrimination
and
are
more
likely
to
report
suffering
from
depression,
anxiety
or
an
eating
disorder.
We
know
that
lgbtq
plus
youth,
who
feel
strongly
supported
by
their
families,
demonstrate
better
mental
health
outcomes
and
have
less
risk
when
it
comes
to
substance,
abuse,
physical
health
problems
and
self-esteem
issues.
A
Family
services
of
the
north
shore
has
recognized
that
need,
and
in
2021
they
supported
over
500,
lgbtq
plus
youth
and
their
parents.
With
counseling
support
education
and
awareness
activities
through
their
proud
to
be
program,
they
offer
offer
weekly
support
groups
for
lgbtq
plus
youth
at
no
cost
and
a
weekly
support
group
for
parents
of
gender,
diverse
youth
in
response
to
covet
19.
They
adapted
their
proud
to
be
gender
identity
and
sexual
orientation
conference,
which
is
now
a
virtual
education
event.
