The Family Justice Center (FJC) is a safe place where victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and elder abuse can come for help. At the Buncombe County Family Justice Center, survivors can get access many different services in one location and begin their journey towards strength, safety, and hope.

Come to Lake Julian Park at sunset on Saturday, July 4 for a spectacular fireworks display. This show happens every year, so show up early to get a good seat, or use some of the parts great amenities. They have picnic shelters, paddle boats, volleyball, playgrounds, fishing access, and much more.

Do you know what to do if you or someone is having a stroke? Act F.A.S.T.! F.A.S.T. is an acronym that stands for Face, Arms, Speech, and Time. Check the person's face, see if one side is drooping, ask them to raise both arms, see if one slides down or won't raise to begin with, test their speech, have them repeat a sentence. If they have trouble with any of those, it's "T" for time, time to call 9-1-1.

The black bear population in Buncombe County is growing, which means there are more bears looking for food. When bears discover food that is easy to access and high in fat or calories, they will continue to return to that food source. Many people are unintentionally teaching bears that they can provide them with food, such as garbage, bird seed, and dog food. Bears become conditioned to return to a site that provides a great food source. NC Wildlife Resources Commission Officer, Mike Carraway, explains steps to take to ward off bears if you live in a bear habitat or if there are bears in your neighborhood. Suggestions are to take down bird feeders, keep trash/garbage in a secure place such as indoors or secure/locked container, pick up fruit from fruit trees and do not leave pet food outside. If you see a bear in your yard, make lots of noise to scare it to let him know he is not welcome. Two Black Mountain residents, Anne Oxenreider and Allen Arcand, explain their encounters with bears in their yard and the steps they have taken to distract the bears.
