Hance
acknowledged
the
21st
anniversary
of
the
La
Plata
tornado.

The
tornado
claimed
five
lives,
including
two
Calvert
County
residents
injured
more
than
100
and
caused
over
100
million
in
damage.
The
bocc
held
a
dedication
ceremony
of
a
white
oak
sapling
in
honor
of
gold
star
spouses
on
Tuesday
April
25th.
The
sapling
was
donated
by
Miss
Dorothy
oberg
and
is
a
direct
descendant
of
the
Talbot
County
wyoke,
which
at
nearly
500
years
old,
was
the
oldest
documented
White
Oak
in
the
nation
until
it
was
felled
by
a
storm
in
2002.

teacher
of
the

recognition
John
Allen,
a
journalism
teacher
at
Huntington
high
school
was
selected
as
the
recipient
of
the
2023
District
teacher
of
the
year
award
for
Calvert
County
public
schools
during
John's
eight-year
tenure.
He
has
not
only
imparted
knowledge
but
also
served
as
a
role
model
to
his
students
and
colleagues
inspiring
them
to
be
their
best
selves.

Animal
control
officer,
ACO
Derek
Robertson
witnessed
a
serious
Collision
involving
a
Dodge
Durango
and
an
18-wheeler
at
an
intersection
in
Charles
County
ACO
Robinson
without
hesitation
worked
with
a
Good
Samaritan
to
assist
with
removing
the
driver
of
the
Durango,
which
was
on
the
verge
of
being
engulfed
in
flames
and
continued
to
help
until
First
Responders
arrived
on
the
scene,
ACO
Robinson's
Swift
actions
helped
ensure
the
safety
of
both
drivers.
His
outstanding
service
to
fellow
citizens
is
commendable
and
worthy
of
recognition.

extended
sincere
gratitude
and
appreciation
to
Animal
control
officer,
Derek
Robinson
for
his
heroic
actions
in
a
consent:
calendar
Office
of
the
County
Administrator
digital
asset
management,
software
contract
related
to
procuring
a
new
digital
asset
management
system
to
house
all
of
Calvert
County
government's
images
and
graphic
assets.
Department
of
Public
Works,
lease
agreement
between
the
University
of
Maryland
Center
for
environmental
science
and
Calvert
County
government
to
lease
the
Waterman's,
Wharf
and
Solomons.

Both
consent
agenda
items
were
adopted
as
presented
in
new
business
department
of
Parks
and
Recreation
program,
Open
Space,
Grant
application,
Dunkirk,
tennis
and
pickleball.
The
department
of
Parks
and
Recreation
currently
has
a
capital,
Improvement
plan,
CIP
project
to
relocate
and
expand
the
tennis
court
complex
at
Dunkirk
District
park.
The
project
includes
five
tennis
courts,
four
pickleball
courts,
parking
lighting,
restrooms
and
related
amenities.
The
bocc
have
previously
approved
funding
for
this
project
after
completion
of
the
design
and
sending
it
out
to
bid.
A
It
has
been
determined
that
the
funding
is
not
adequate
to
meet
the
requirements
of
this
project.
Two
hundred
and
twenty
five
thousand
dollars
from
program
Open
Space,
has
already
been
allocated
and
700
000
has
been
allocated
from
the
local
park
and
playground
infrastructure
program
to
offset
the
cost
to
Calvert
County
taxpayers
after
completion
of
all
design
and
permitting
requirements.
This
project
went
out
to
bid
in
March,
2023
and
all
bids
came
in
over
budget
a
resource
available
to
cover
the
cost
of
the
project
and
provide
a
10
contingency
is
program.
Open
Space.
A
By
amending
our
request
with
the
Maryland
Department
of
Natural
Resources
for
an
additional
745
thousand
dollars,
Calvert
County
will
be
able
to
move
forward
with
the
construction
of
this
project
within
approximate
12-month
construction
period.
If
awarded
a
public
hearing
will
be
scheduled
to
amend
the
FY
23
adopted
budget
to
allocate
745
000
in
additional
grant
funding
to
the
Dunkirk
District
Park
tennis
courts,
CIP
project,
a
25
matches
were
required
for
program
Open
Space
projects
which
have
already
been
accounted
for
in
the
current
approved
project
budget
staff
recommended
and
the
boccc
approved
signature
of
this
program.

Open
Space
Grant
application
for
Dunkirk
District,
Park
tennis
courts,
work
session,
Department
of
Finance
and
budget
FY
24
board
of
education,
budget
review,
the
Board
of
Education
Boe
and
superintendent
Dr
Andre
townsell
presented
their
fiscal
year,
2024
Budget
on
April
25th
2023.
The
Boe
has
requested
an
increase
of
22.9
million
dollars
over
fiscal
year.
2023
School
enrollment
is
projected
to
have
declined
by
321
students
to
15
086
students
for
September
30th
2023.
The
driving
force
behind
the
boe's
22.9
million
dollar
increase.
A
Is
the
state
mandated
blueprint
for
Maryland's
future
legislation,
though
three
million
thirty
thousand
and
three
hundred
dollars
is
the
min
requirement
necessary
this
year.
The
next
regularly
scheduled
meeting
of
the
board
of
County
Commissioners
is
May,
2nd
2023
at
10
A.M
in
other
Calvert
County
local
news,
the
Calvert
County
Department
of
Public
Works,
advises
citizens
that
it
will
Begin
work
this
summer
on
traffic
safety,
improvements
to
roadway
intersections
near
howling,
Point
Park.
The
planned
improvements
are
designed
to
allow
safer
and
quicker
access
to
howling
Point
Park
by
addressing
traffic
safety
issues
and
improving
traffic
flow.
A
Public
Works
completed
the
first
phase
of
this
Improvement
project
in
2020
by
constructing
a
second
entrance
at
the
back
of
howling
Point
Park
to
alleviate
traffic
issues
at
the
main
Park
entrance
on
md-231.
Additional
project
phases
include
further
modification
to
the
main
Park
entrance
and
the
intersections
of
skipjack
Road
and
mg-231
and
gypsail
drive
nmd
231
work
is
expected
to
begin
as
early
as
mid-june
and
will
require
temporary
closure
of
each
intersection
for
several
weeks.

The
Calvert
County
Department
of
Parks
and
Recreation
invites
the
public
to
celebrate
the
opening
of
Breezy,
Point,
Beach
and
Campground
for
the
2023
season
at
the
annual
Breezy
Point
Beach
Blast
Off
event,
the
all-ages
event
will
be
held,
May
20th
from
5
to
9
pm
admission
will
be
free
and
pre-registration
is
not
required.
Attendees
will
enjoy
music
food
for
purchase
from
local
food
trucks,
family
games
and
a
spectacular
fireworks
display.
Everyone
is
welcome
to
bring
a
picnic
or
use
the
grills
at
the
beach
grills
are
available
on
a
first
come
first
serve
basis.
A
The
use
of
gas
grills
pull
behind
grills
smokers,
deep
fryers,
smoking,
vaping
pets
and
glass
containers
are
prohibited,
Breezy,
Point,
Beach
and
Campground
is
a
favorite
Bayfront
Park
featuring
swimming
fishing
and
picnicking
visitors
are
encouraged
to
take
advantage
of
the
public
beach
playground
in
a
200-foot
fishing
pier.
As
a
reminder,
short-term
and
seasonal
camping
will
be
closed
for
the
2023
season
for
completion
of
an
extensive
Shoreline
restoration
project.
