Crowbar modules are called "barclamps", and to use Ceph in a Dell OpenStack-powered cloud we must first upload and install two new barclamps. The new Ceph barclamp installs knowledge of how to deploy Ceph roles across selected nodes. The updated Nova barclamp allows Nova nodes to act as Ceph clients and gives them the ability to store volumes and images in Ceph.

Once the Ceph barclamps are integrated with Crowbar and OpenStack, we need to create a new "proposal" and apply it to the cluster. Crowbar proposals map nodes to specific roles for a capability. For example, the Ceph proposal states which nodes should act as Ceph Monitors, and which nodes should host Object Storage Daemons to serve data from their disks. Proposals also provide a mechanism for setting various options and are persistent across node installations.

After the Ceph proposal is successfully applied to the cluster, we can use the command line interface to verify that everything is up and running correctly.

Ceph is integrated with the Dell OpenStack-powered cloud, and the OpenStack Nova Dashboard (Horizon) can be used to create and delete volumes stored in Ceph. The interface hasn't been changed, so OpenStack operators will be on familiar ground. This video shows the simple process, plus a command line method for making sure everything succeeded.
