beth
westrich
from
who
is
the
executive
producer
of
this
program.

took
two
years
to
sell
it
covet,
hit
stuff
happened
and
then
finally,
discovery
plus
had
a
little
faith
in
us,
took
a
chance
and
bought
four
hours
right.
So
from
that
point
we
were
in
the
field.
We
were
in
embedded
in
jail
a
little
over
three
months
and
then
it's
taken
me
about
six
or
seven
months
to
edit
the
shows.

was,
I
was
mad
about
purdue
and
the
whole
pharma
industry
and
how
that
incentive-
you
know,
really
set
the
whole
addiction
on
fire
in
our
country,
and
I
kept
looking
for
a
community
that
was
forward
thinking.
I
didn't
want
to
do
something.
That
was
what
I
call
addiction
porn
like
chasing
people
and
watching
them
shoot
up
and.

you

any
prior
experience,
shooting
things
in
a
jail
cause?
I
can
imagine
that
that
is
such
a
different
sort
of
reality
on
the
ground
as
you're
actually
shooting
the
production
versus.
Maybe
you
know
a
house
or
what
have
you
you're
at
a
location?
Did
you
have
any
experience
with
that
kind
of
restriction.

in
terms
of
you
know
when
you're
going
into
a
project
like
this,
obviously
it
sounds
like
you
know,
once
you
connected
with
sheriff
leonard
this
thing,
really
caught
fire
and
moved
quickly
in
terms
of
the
way
you
prepare
for
something
like
that.
Do
you
do
you
watch
other
shows
that
are
you
know
focusing
on
other?
You
know
programs
or
activities,
or
what
have
you
stories
that
are
inside
of
you
know
jail
facilities,
and
things
like
that.

terms
of
stories,
talk

you

the
stories

in
this
specific
series
you
mentioned
that
you
know
there
were
specific
stories
that
you

tracking,

you
guys

filming,

you
were
you
know
very
mindful
that
you
know
you
had
to
pay
off
those
stories
to
the
viewer
right
talk
to
me
about
those
stories
and
what
really
stands
out
to
you
about
what
you
were
able
to
capture
here.

you

doing?
Fine,
thank
you
for
having
me
very
glad
to
have
you.
Obviously,
this
is
a.
I
can't
I
can't
think
of
another
docu-series
of
in
chesterfield,
certainly
not
one
in
the
jail.
So
this
is
obviously
a
first
of
its
kind
sort
of
situation.

Beth
talked
a
lot
about
you
wanting
to
find
the
right
place
to
tell
the
story
that
she
wanted
to
tell
it
doesn't
sound
from
her
characterization
that
it
took
long
when
she
connected
with
you.
I'm
just
curious
if
we
can
rewind
a
little
bit
when,
when
harp
kind
of
came
about
talk
to
me
a
little
bit
about
sort
of
the
thought
process
and
and
how
the
program
sort
of
came
together
well
before
beth
in
the
production,
everybody
came
into
town.

That's
a
tough
question
and
that's
really
one.
I
can't
even
answer
today
because
I
don't
know
how
harp
got
to
where
it
is.
I
really
don't.
I
do
know
that
on
march
8th
of
2016,
I
became
very
frustrated
with
the
number
of
deaths
we're
seeing
in
our
county
from
opioid
overdose,
primarily
heroin
and
the
number
of
sessions
in
our
jail
every
day,
20
30
a
day
who
are
addicted
to
heroin
and
on
that
march,
8th
date
of
2016.
I
just
said:
that's
it
we're
going
to
start
a
program
today
right.

Somebody's
still
struggling
with
the
disease
of
addiction
and
and
if
you
came
in-
and
you
were
a
two
gram-
two
and
a
half
gram,
three
gram,
a
day
user
of
heroin
and
you're
in
my
jail
for
six
months,
twelve
months
and
then
you
go
out
to
the
community
and
you
try
to
get
that
first
hit
your
brain
says:
you
need
three
grams
today
that
three
grams
will
kill
you.
So
I
realized
we
had
to
do
more.
Instead
of
releasing
recovered
or
clean
and
sober
addicts,
we.

It's
been
when
we
started
it.
We
literally
started
it
that
night.
In
the
first
person,
bakuma
boyd
was
his
name
he's
out
living
in
boston.
Now
doing
wonderful,
I
think
he's
got
over
three
years
of
clean
recovery
life.
That's
great
since
he's
been
released,
so
he
was
the
first
person
in
and
we
just
started,
throwing
things
at
the
wall
and
see.

I
was
going
in
there
every
day
to
see
where
we
were
right.
How
many
people
are
we
got
a
program?
Do
we
have
mentors
so
I
started
going
there
every
day,
checking
on
the
progress,
because
it
was
important
to
me
to
get
this
program
up
and
running
right
and
then
about
after
about
a
week
or
10
days.
It
started
to
run
pretty
good.
I
said,
okay,
we
got
a
program
and
I
went
back
to
my
office
and
started
doing
all
the
other
duties
of
being
the
sheriff
right.
C
But
then
we
had
a
little
uprising
inside
a
harp
and
the
men
were
saying
where's
the
sheriff
where's
the
sheriff
and
I'm
like.
What's
going
on,
so
I
went
back
to
harp
and
they
said
sheriff.
Why
didn't
you
come
in
yesterday?
Why
didn't
you
come
in
the
day
before?
Where
were
you?
I'm
like
I'm
doing
my
job
right
and
I
didn't
realize
the
impact
that
made
on
these
folks.
You
know
being
the
sheriff
stepping
in
there
and
the
sheriff.
C
Taking
the
time
to
talk
to
you
gave
them
a
degree
of
hope
they
never
had
in
their
life
interesting
and
then,
when
I
finally
stopped
going,
it
was
like
I
abandoned
them,
and
so
now,
for
the
last
six
years,
I've
been
going
in
every
day,
both
the
men's
pod
and
the
women's
pod
and
I've
learned.
If
I'm
going
to
go
away
on
vacation,
I
have
to
clear
it
with
them
first,
so
they
know,
I
won't
be
there
for
the
next
week,
but
you
gotta,
you
understand
these
folks
have
had
little
to
know.
A
I
now
want
to.
I
do
want
to
go
back
to
the
day
that
you
first
heard
from
beth,
because
the
the
way
she
she
sort
of
described
it.
It
sounds
like
man,
it
was.
You
know
you
guys
connected,
and
this
thing
just
really
got
moving.
What's
your
recollection
of
the
that
first
conversation,
those
first
few
conversations.

It's
an
interesting
pathway
to
get
there,
you
know
we
started
harping
and
it
started
getting
some
local
publicity
and
then
statewide
and
it
got
national
and
then
ryan
hampton
who
she
talked
about
is
a
national
advocate
for
recovery
and
people
suffering
from
the
disease
of
addiction.
He's
actually
been
an
advisor
to
three
presidents.
Now
he
heard
about
us
and
he
came
down
here
from
the
west
coast
to
see
our
program
and
he
actually
put
it
in
his
book.

It
was
an
entire
chapter
in
his
book
about
us
and
from
there
beth
ended
up
reading
about
us,
so
she
called
me
and
I
remembered
a
phone
call
because
we've
been
very
open,
very
transparent
with
our
program.
We
want
everybody
to
see
the
program
right
and
when
beth
called
me,
she
said.
Well,
you
know
sheriff.
I
need,
I
need
access,
you
have
it.
No!
No!
I
need
access,
I
need
to
you,
have
it
and
she
kept
saying?
Well,
no,
you
don't
understand.

The
only
way
to
tell
the
story
is
to
tell
a
story
right,
so
it
was
a
matter
of
convincing
her
and
when
she
came
down
to
film
the
the
trailer,
the
teaser
film,
if
you
will
we,
we
just
showed
her
that
we
want
you
to
see
everything,
because
you
have
to
be
able
to
see
everything
to
understand
it.
Yeah.
So
it
worked
out
really
well
and
I
think
having
that
access
one
thing
about
beth
she
said,
is
I'm
not
telling
the
story
right?
I'm
just
here
to
film
your
story
right.

What's
the
idea
that
that
the
simple
act
of
being
observed
changes
the
person
who
is
being
observed
right,
the
the
idea,
I'm
just
curious
as
you
watch
this
sort
of
production
play
out
how
what
was
the
response
from
those
who
were
taking
part
in
it,
those
who
were
on
your
staff,
you
even
yourself.
What
was
it
like
to
be
a
part
of
this
right.

So
it
was
a
big
learning
curve
for
all
of
our
employees,
because
we
really
opened
up
our
jail
right,
because
we
think
the
story
is
that
important
right.
As
far
as
the
participants,
we
really
respected
them.
Everybody
that
was
filmed
had
to
do
a
release
if
they
did
not
want
to
do
a
release,
we
kept
them
out
of
all
frames
or
the
production
company
kept
them
out
of
our.
D

We
respected
privacy
of
everybody
who
wanted
privacy
right,
including
my
deputies,
so
what
we
did
learn
is
you
know
for
that.
First,
two
weeks
having
cameras
and
sound
and
booms
and
everything
in
your
face,
it
was
a
big
pain.
I
was
mic'd
up
the
minute
I
walk
into
jail.
They'd
run
to
me
mike
me,
up,
other
members
of
my
staff
were
mic'd
up
all
day
long.
I
remember
one
day
I
got
home
late
at
night
I
went
to
my
closet
to
get
undressed
and
I'm
still
got
the.

Right
in
the
course
of
the
production,
obviously,
you
know
you're
in
conversation
with
the
producers
with
beth
with
everybody
who
works
there,
as
this
thing
started
kind
of
winding
down
in
terms
of
the
shooting
aspect
of
it
all
did.
Were
you
excited
at
the
prospect
of
being
done
was?
Did
you
want
them
to
keep
telling
the
story?
Do
you?

Right
was
it
a
challenge
for
you
to
you
know
you
talked
about
having
to
go,
you
know
every
day
and
that
they
that
they
they
reacted
so
positively
to
you
being
a
part
of
it
right
and
I'm
curious
just
in
the
normal
day-to-day
operations,
what
it
must
have
been
like
for
you
to
try
to
run
the
facility.
Do
all
the
extra
the
other
things
that
come
across
with
it
and
also
have
this
other
thing
that
was
going
on.
I'm
just
curious.
What
was
that
balance
like
for
you.

Yeah,
I
do
have
a
lot
to
do
as
sheriff.
We
have.
Six
hundred
thousand
people
come
through
our
courthouses.
Every
year
we
have
15
courthouses
up
and
running
every
day.
We
have
civil
process
serving
80
87
000
papers
a
year.
I
have
a
jail
that
gets
12
000
people
through
it
every
year.
So
there's
a
lot
to
focus.

Going
into
harp
every
day
it
it's
a
challenge,
but
I've
come
to
to
be
able
to
do
it
now.
It's
part
of
my
everyday
routine
right.
I
make
it
a
point.
Sometimes
it's
at
five
o'clock
six
o'clock
at
night
when
I
can
get
in
there,
but
I'm
getting
in
there
right
it's
important
to
them
again.
They've
never
had
anybody
invest
in
their
lives
and
what
that
meant
to
them.
Just
floored
me
so
we're
committed
now
we're
all
committed
to
giving
them
the
best
opportunity
to
succeed.

In
terms
of
I
mean
I'm
just
curious:
if
you
could
go
back
and
talk
to
you
know
your
first
deployment
right
and
you
said
to
you,
you
know
hey
in
several
decades
you're
going
to
be
on
television.
I
you're
going
to
be.
You
know,
spearheading
this
operation
that
you
know.
Does
this
work
with
folks
who
are
addicts?
I
I
wonder
if
you
could
do
that,
what
would
what
would
your
past
self
have
thought
of
of
that
opportunity?.

My
past
self
never
thought
I'd
be
sheriff
interesting.
In
fact,
I've
been
sheriff
for
nine
years
now,
when
sheriff
prophet
before
me
actually
met
with
me
to
tell
me
he
was
contemplating
retirement
thought
I'd,
be
a
good
fit
asked
me
to
consider
being
sheriff.
I
told
him.
No,
I
wasn't
interested
interesting,
I
just
retired,
from
the
police
department.
I
did
31
years
with
chessville
police
department,
I
retired,
at
the
rank
of
major.
I
said
I've
done
it
been.
There
got
the
t-shirt,
I'm
good
right
and
I
actually
told
him.

So
I
I
do
think
it
should
be
everywhere.
I
will
say
there
is
a
lot
of
jails
who
have
their
own
programs
and
they're
pretty
good
programs.
We
do
go
to
an
extreme,
we're
very
unconventional
and
we
found
that's
what
gets
us
the
best
results.
So
you
know
ours
is
different
and
you
have
to
be
willing
to
take
a
lot
of
risk
that
we
take
and
a
lot
of
people
aren't
willing
to
take
those
risks.
But
I
will
say
this:
if
everybody
else
in
the
country
wants
to
run
a
program
like
ours
have
at
it.

I'm
not
here
to
create
those
programs,
I'm
here
to
focus
on
our
needs
in
chesterfield
county.
Our
program
has
been
adopted
in
williamsburg,
okay
and
their
jail
in
fairfax
in
that
jail.
So
it's
already
up
and
running
in
two
other
jails:
we've
had
people
from
north
carolina
and
ohio
come
to
our
jail
to
visit
and
and
some
others
from
alaska.
Believe
it
or
not.
So
the
concept
is
making
its
way
around.

Interesting
all
right
so
last
question.
Obviously
this
is
a
you
know.
Like
I
mentioned,
this
is
a
big
deal
for
for
cheshire
field.
This
is
obviously
a
to
have
a
series
like
this
to
shine
a
light
on
what
you
know,
the
good
work
that
the
program
does
and
the
hard
work
that
the
program
does
and
I'm
just
curious.
What
do
you?
What
would
you
say
to
chesterfield
residents
who
who
are
interested
in
this
or
who
might
have
a
chance
to
check
it
out?

They
should
be
proud.
This
is
a
I
think,
a
internationally
known
program
now,
but
it's
not
just
the
sheriff's
office
in
the
documentary
you'll
see
chessville
county
mental
health.
Are
our
fire
departments
focused
and
they're
the
police
department
right
all
aspects
of
the
county,
and
none
of
this
would
be
possible
if
we
didn't
have
a
county
administration
and
the
county
board
of
supervisors
who
supported
us.
So
you
talk
about
a
total
team
effort
to
make
this
program
happen.

so
many
components
of
this
county
and
that's
why
I
think
every
citizen
should
be
very
proud
of
what
this
documentary
shows.

am

one

scene
and
that's
the
aerial
view
