The Stegmaier Public Service Fellowship was established in honor of the late James J.L. Stegmaier, who served as the county administrator from 2007 until 2016. Mr. Stegmaier began his career in the Budget and Management Department of Chesterfield County in 1979 to eventually become the county administrator in 2007. Not only was Mr. Stegmaier a leader, but he served as a mentor to many within the county and the community. He lived a life of principled achievement, one of service to others, ethical leadership, and constant personal growth and learning. Mr. Stegmaier passed away in 2022. It was said of Mr. Stegmaier, “Ever humble about his talents, he was quite skillful and provided evenhanded, thoughtful, analytic leadership that was
exceptionally useful in a changing world.” It is with this focus in mind that this two-year fellowship was named in his honor. Ms. Margot Stegmaier joined the Board of Supervisors as they introduced the first Stegmaier Public Service Fellow, Mary Romanello. Mary is a graduate of Christopher Newport University and holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science. Mary
is currently working in the Constituent and Media Services Department.

Yes, sir I'd just like to briefly introduce and have Dave good come forward. Mary romanella and the stegmar family actually as well and I just wanted to just intervene. Just briefly to just mention again. Another touching tribute that we have before us is the recognition of Jay, stegmar's life and career of service to Chesterfield County. He was personally a mentor to me when I started my public service career in 1990 and a mentor to many people, not just fiscal and administrative, but just being again a good public servant.

So it's with my honor to present, if you will the first and and foremost but not the last Fellowship of the J stegmar Public Service fellow program and we're touched to have the stegmar family here with us today as well and and part of being a fellow is you got to just assume it and step up to the plate is and for her tenure here and so I'm going to just turn it over to them right now. Thank you. Thank.

You Dr Casey Mr, chairman uh Vice, chair fellow board members. Thank you for this moment. I'm going to be very brief. You know Chesterfield set out to the do something pretty special for Jay, more than just naming a building or our facility, but actually doing something that perpetuates his passion for the community and also his Devotion to not just the public, but the people who work for Chesterfield County to provide programs and services. People. Like you just heard from from the constituent, Media Services Department.

We could not be happier to be the first host of the stegmeyer fellow Mary romanello, of course, and we also have with us a very special guest, Margot stegmeyer who's also here and in just a moment, I'm going to turn it over to them. To say a few words. Mary comes to us from Christopher Newport University, where she was a resident fellow there, and just over a month and a half with the county, she's already doing exceptional work and has become a sought after member of the team.

So we're very proud of the work she's done and will do in the upcoming two years. So with that I'm going to turn it over to Mary and Miss stegmeyer. Thank you.

Good afternoon, everyone thank you Dave for the warm welcome and thank you, Ms stegmeyer for being here. Thank you. Our department wanted to show our gratitude to you.

Thank you for those of you who may not know my name is Mary romanello and I am proud and honored to be Chesterfield County's first stegmeyer Public Service fellow upon arriving at Chesterfield I, was welcomed with open arms by the staff from my team in the department of constituent Services, the board maintenance. Everyone all welcome to me with open arms and wanted to know more about me and the position at hand when the position was posted. I was excited, I really thought wow. This could be the opportunity of a lifetime.

In the interview the panel told me about Mr stegemeyer and the Legacy that he left on the county. I remain grateful to those continued conversations about him. He was a great man, an honored man, one who cared about the county who cared about its constituents and treated everyone just as they were family.

This position is an honor as a stagmire fellow I have stepped into a role that requires the responsibility to understand the importance of Public Service ever since I was little. I knew that I wanted to work in the community work with my community as a proud graduate of Christopher Newport University I was given the opportunity to serve the student body in various roles. This further set my career to pursue a master's degree in public administration in the future.

At my desk, I have this quote from Martin Luther King Jr that states everyone can be great, because everyone can serve every day. I challenge myself to serve and represent Chesterfield County. The way your husband did day to day I provide assistance to board members. Just so you know kind of what my day-to-day looks like I give feedback for Quality web Assurance, assist other departments with proposals and documentation and create reports for meetings. I've also been involved in planning a few events and have shadowed a few members of different departments.

Mrs stegemeyer. Thank you. Thank you for giving me the blessing and the opportunity to represent you and your husband's name for Chesterfield County I promise to make you proud.

Well, Jay would be very humbled to be recognized in this way. In fact, uh he would be thrilled if he were here, because he really believes in Young The, Young leadership, and that you are the you are the tomorrow of today and that's really important, but he certainly wouldn't want the Limelight on him. He would want the Limelight on you right, that's who he is, um and he believes the government is only as strong as the integrity and the honesty of the young people coming in.

The space to serve us as we age out you will take care of us, thank goodness, and but everybody in this room I think you know it like, and he believed it I heard you say the word family and team, and that was exemplary by the award or the recognition just a little while ago, and she slipped out and and I know what the random act of kindness can do and Jay knew that um so I'm just really happy that you're on board I am happy to be included.

My family is honored as well, um but we're humbled, and it's not about us anymore. It's about what you're going to do. Mary go for it.
