Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), the incoming chairman of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions, on Thursday will speak with students during several classroom visits at Mallets Bay School in Colchester. Following the classroom visits, Sanders will travel to Essex High School to hold a student town meeting, meet with educators, and take a tour of the Center for Technology, Essex. Sanders will be available to media following the Essex Westford Student Town Meeting.
“Last year, I was lucky enough to hear from thousands of Vermont students all across our state,” said Sanders. “Every time, I am impressed by their insights and ideas about how we move forward in our communities, in our state, and in our country. Let
me
say
a
few
words
as
we
begin.

Let
me
start
off
with
the
bad
news,
then
the
good
news
and
then
we'll
open
it
up,
I,
think
in
politics
and
in
government
it's
important
to
be
honest,
with
people
to
tell
people
where
we
are
as
a
nation
as
a
state
or
whatever,
and
the
truth
is
and
I
don't
think
I
have
to
tell
you
this
I
think
you
already
know
this.
This
country
has
a
whole
lot
of
problems
and
the
goal,
of
course,
is
working
together
throughout
this
country
that
we're
going
to
address
those
problems
and
I
think
we
can.

But
it's
important
to
lay
the
problems
write
down
on
the
table,
maybe
at
the
top
of
my
list-
and
this
is
certainly
not
a
Vermont
or
an
American
issue.
It's
a
global
issue
is
the
crisis
of
global
warming
and
I
know
that
you've
all
thought
about
it
and
I
expect
that
many
of
you
are
studying
and
what
the
scientists
and
people
have
studied
this
issue
the
most
are
telling
us
is
that
we
do
not
get
our
act
together.
That's
just
not
America.
That's
China,
there's
Russia,
that's
the
entire
world.
C
Well,
we
recently
made
a
largest
investment
in
world
history,
I
think
in
terms
of
solar
and
wind
and
Energy
Efficiency,
but
we
have
an
enormous
amount
of
work
to
be
done
in
that
area.
Other
areas
that
concern
me
other
areas
of
Education
I
want
to
talk
about
that
as
well.
It's
important
that
you
guys
for
a
dozen
different
reasons,
all
the
reasons
that
you
know
get
the
best
quality
education
you
can,
regardless
of
the
income
of
your
families
and
when
I
talk
about
education.
C
If
you
want
to
go
to
medical
school,
the
average
debt
is
250.
000
Health
walk
the
dentists
to
leave
dental
school
three
four
hundred
thousand
dollars
in
debt.
That
is
not
acceptable.
So
one
of
the
issues
we
have
to
deal
about
is
how
we
create
a
system
in
which
all
people,
regardless
of
the
income,
can
get
the
best
quality
education
that
they
need
and
not
lead
School
deeply
in
debt.
Another
issue
that
we're
working
very
hard
on
is
Health
Care.
C
We
are
the
only
major
country
on
Earth.
Many
of
you
don't
know
us,
but
the
only
major
country
on
Earth
not
to
guarantee
Health
Care
to
all
people
as
a
human
right,
and
the
result
of
that
is
that
Health
Care
in
this
country,
for
a
lot
of
reasons,
primarily
the
greed
of
the
insurance
industry,
Health
Care
in
this
country,
is
very,
very
expensive.
It's
a
nation.
We
are
spending
thirteen
thousand
dollars
for
every
man,
woman
and
child
family
of
four
fifty
two
thousand
dollars
just
on
Pelicans
huge
expenditure.
In
fact
it's
unsustainable.

C
Should
it
be
available
to
all
people,
regardless
of
their
income,
and
should
people
have
the
same
right
to
get
health
care
as
you
do
walking
into
the
school?
No
one
asked
you
how
much
money
your
family
makes
when
you
walked
into
the
school.
No
one
cares
with.
You
have
a
lot
of
money.
You
don't
have
anyone
you
get
the
best
education.
This
system
can
offer
you,
regardless
of
your
income.
Many
countries
treat
Health
Care.
In
that
respect,
we
don't
so
they
issue
of
Health.
Care
is
an
issue
that
concerns
me.

Another
issue
that
we
have
to
deal
with
that
is
a
real
problem
in
this
country,
is
some
16
percent
of
American
workers,
a
living
paycheck
to
paycheck,
and
that
means
you
go
out.
You
do
your
work,
you
work
40
or
50
hours
a
week
at
the
end
of
the
week.
You
haven't,
you,
don't
have
any
money.
If
you
can
put
into
the
bank,
you
got
to
go
out
and
pay
your
bills,
your
housing,
your
insurance,
your
child
care
bills.
So
food
bills,
you
don't
have
any
money
to
save.

Meanwhile,
we
have
more
income
and
wealth
inequality
today
than
we
have
ever
had
in
the
history
of
this
country.
Now
you
don't
see
a
whole
lot
of
that
on
TV
or
in
the
newspapers
or
the
reasons
for
that,
but
you
got
three
people
in
America
three
people
who
own
more
wealth
than
the
bottom
half
of
American
society.

We
want
to
increase
floating
turnout,
but
if
you
are
a
billionaire,
you
can
spend
hundreds
and
hundreds
of
millions
of
dollars
in
every
state
in
this
country
on
32nd
television
ads
making
sure
that
the
candidate
you
want
gets
elected
is
not
democracy,
I,
don't
think
so.
So
how
we
create
a
political
system
which
ordinary
people
can
get
the
people
they
want
elected
rather
than
billionaires,
is
another
issue
that
we
are.

Some
of
the
issues
that
concern
me.
That's
the
bad
news.
Let
me
tell
you
about
the
good
news.
The
good
news
is
that,
for
a
wide
variety
of
reasons,
some
good
reasons-
some
not
so
good.
All
of
you
in
this
room
have
enormous
opportunity.
Economic
Opportunity,
as
you
look
at
the
future
of
your
career,
is
what
you
want
to
do
as
a
nation.
We
need
more
doctors,
we
need
more
nurses,
we
need
more
dentists,
we
need
more
mental
health
professionals,
we
need
more
teachers,
we
need
more
postal
workers,
you
name
the
job,
that's
out
there.

Infrastructures,
infrastructure,
roads,
Bridges,
Water,
Systems,
Wastewater
plants,
Broadband,
two
billion
dollars
into
the
state,
and
if
you
talk
to
people
in
Montpelier,
what
they
will
tell
you
is
we
don't
have
the
workers
today
to
do
the
work
that
needs
to
be
done.
We
need
to
rebuild
our
transportation
system
in
many
respects.
We
need
to
improve
Broadband.
We
need
to
get
solar
panels
on
rooftops.
We
need
to
build
wind
turbines
and
we
don't
have
the
workers
in
the
state
right
now
in
order
to
do
that.

So
when
we
talk
about
higher
education,
some
of
you
I
suspect.
Many
of
you
are
looking
forward
to
going
to
college.
That's
great!
We
want
you
to
do
a
coach,
we
want
you
to
get
the
best
education
you
can.
Some
of
you
are
good
with
your
hands
and
you
don't
want
to
go
to
a
four-year
college.
You
want
to
go
to
a
a
a
school
where
you
can
learn
to
be
an
electrician
or
a
plumber
or
a
company.

Opportunities
I'd
like
to
talk
to
you
about
and
get
a
sense
of
where
you're
coming
from
the
kind
of
work
you
guys
are
interested
in
doing,
but
enormous
opportunities
out
there
for
you
all
right
last
point
that
I
want
to
make
I
want
to
open
it
up
on
on
this.
Maybe
this
point:
these
are
from
a
mental
health
perspective
very,
very
difficult
times
for
our
country
and
I
think
countries
all
over
the
world,
and
the
truth
is
that
in
the
United
States
we've
long
had
serious
problems
with
with
mental
health.

Need
that's
been
long-standing
covet
has
made
it
worse
much
worse
and
it
has
had
a
very
significant
impact
on
people.
Your
age,
your
lives,
have
been
radically
disruptive.
I
mean
I
walk
around
with
a
mask.
You
know
as
soon
as
I
leave
here.
I'm
going
to
put
this
mask
on
I,
don't
want
to
get
covered.
All
of
you
have
to
deal
with
it.

You
have
to
deal
with
the
isolation
not
going
to
the
school,
not
socializing,
not
playing
ball,
doing
theater
doing
the
things
that
you
would
love
to
do
being
with
your
friends
for
free,
not
being
with
your
grandparents.
It
has
had
a
very
significant
impact
on
all
of
our
Lives.
Nobody
in
this
state.
Nobody
in
this
country
has
escaped
that
and
the
death
toll
is
going
and
lost
over
a
million
people,
tens
of
millions
of
people
in
the
mail
and
the
psychological
impact
of
that
is
significant.

So
the
point
that
I
want
to
make
and
I
hope
we
can
discuss
it
is
if
you
are
struggling
right
now
or
somebody
in
your
family
is
struggling,
do
not
think
you
are
the
only
person
who
we
struggling
millions
of
people
in
this
country
and
one
of
the
manifestations
of
that
I
would
hope.
We
can
discuss
this
as
well,
and
it
worries
me
very
much
when
I'm
on
this
committee,
but
it's
going
to
deal
with
these
issues.

That
wrong,
we
do
have
to
worry
about
it.
It's
impacting
I
would
say
as
much
I
don't
know
as
much,
but
it's
in
impacting
our
state
in
a
very
significant
way,
addiction,
terribly
serious
problem.
People
are
turning
to
drugs
in
a
way
that
is
rather
frightening.
I
was
around
the
state
last
month
and
we
went
to
schools.
I
went
to
police
departments
everybody's
every
place,
you
go.
People
are
talking
about
mental
health
problems
because
when
people
feel
desperate
when
they
feel
lonely,
when
they
don't
have
any
hope,
drugs
becomes
an
alternative.

So
I'm
going
to
give
you
a
lecture,
you
know
this,
your
parents,
your
teachers,
have
already
said
that
about
drugs,
all
that
stuff,
but
people
are
turning
to
those
things
because
of
isolation,
and
the
way
out
of
it
is
at
least
important
to
your
friends.
I
know
it's
hard,
but
the
point
is
you
are
not
the
only
person
who
is
struggling,
your
friends
are
struggling
to
and
to
the
degree
that
we
can
break
through
those
barriers
and
talk
to
each
other.

An
issue
some
of
us
have
worked
on
for
a
long
time,
sometimes
in
the
production
of
it's,
not
just
Nestle.
We
enjoy
products
sometimes,
and
we
don't
know
where
those
products
came
from
and
in
fact
I
was
in
Ghana
many
many
years
ago,
and
we
had
made
some
progress.
It
was
children
producing
the
chocolate
that
we
eat,
so
I
think
there
is
a
growing
consciousness
about
understanding
how
the
product,
whether
it's
a
pair
of
sneakers,
that
you're
wearing
or
the
food
that
you're
eating.

Of
it
said
that
there
were
schools
here
is
the
issue
and
I
know
when
you
use
words
like
capitalism,
socialism,
people
get
very
nervous,
but
what
I
want
to
tell
you
about,
and
we
deal
with
this
a
little
bit
in
the
book,
it's
important
for
all
of
you
and
with
the
internet.
You
have
the
opportunity,
you
know
just
talking
to
some
of
your
teachers
together,
you're
already
doing
it
virtually
you're
communicating
with
kids
around
the
world
countries.
Every
country
in
the
world
does
things
differently.
It's
important
for
us
to
learn
from
other
countries.

There
are
some
things
that
we
do
better
than
other
countries.
There
are
other
things
that
other
countries
do
better
than
us.
For
example,
some
of
you
will
have
family
and
friends
in
Canada
in
Canada,
if
developed,
a
serious
illness
and
you
needed
a
major
operation
and
you're
in
a
hospital
in
Canada
Montreal
for
three
weeks
or
a
month,
and
you
had
all
kinds
of
sophisticated
drugs
being
used
to
treat
you.
What
is
your
bill
when
you
leave
the
hospital?
Anyone
know
zero
zero
we've
got
some
Canada.

They
believe
that
Healthcare
is
a
human
right.
They
don't
buy
in
Logs
with
some
exceptions.
It
is
a
publicly
run
system
like
Medicare
is
in
this
country
and
they
end
up
providing
quality
care
to
all
of
their
people
and
about
half
the
cost
that
we
spend.
So
I
am
maybe
the
lead
advocate
in
the
U.S
Congress
for
a
Medicare
for
all
and
basically
what
it
does.
It
gets
rid
of
insurance
companies
because
insurance
companies
function
what's
the
function
of
an
insurance
company
to
make
money
so.

Job
is
to
make
as
much
money
as
they
can
by
making
sure
you
get
less
Health
Care,
they
pay
their
Executives.
You
know
millions
of
dollars
every
single
year,
so
it's
a
system
that
is
absolutely
dysfunctional,
despite
spending
twice
as
much
per
person
on
health
care
about
85
million
Americans
who
are
uninsured
or
under
insured.
So
this
is
an
issue
that
I
am
believe.

Passionate
I
believe
that
Healthcare
as
a
human
right
I
want
everybody
in
this
room
and
your
parents
and
your
grandparents
to
be
able
to
go
to
the
doctor
that
they
want
to
go
to
and
not
have
to
take
out
their
credit
card
or
their
wallet.
It's
a
right,
and
we
can
do
that
by
Saving
huge
amounts
of
money
by
getting
rid
of
private
insurance
companies
who
it's.

Social
Security
benefits
should
be
increased,
yeah,
okay,
good
question,
excellent
question
or
we
are
experiencing
a
high
inflation
rates,
use
inflation
strictly
in
American,
history
only
particular
to
our
country.
No,
it's
worse.
In
many
other
countries
around
the
world.
Generally
speaking,
the
causes
of
inflation
are
coveted
and
the
breakdown
of
Supply
chains,
so
the
companies
are
not
able
to
get
the
products,
the
components
that
they
need
to
make
the
products
that
they
sell.

So
if
you
look
at
the
price
of
gas
which
has
gone
down,
but
if
you
look
at
gas
prices
and
these
companies
are
owned
by
large
x,
companies
like
Exxon
Mobil
and
shell
and
others
you'll
find
that
in
recent
months,
recent
years
of
their
profits
are
record-breaking,
so
they
have
used
the
pandemic
and
all
of
the
confusion
to
jack
up
prices,
and
it's
only
an
energy.
It
is
in
food
or
in
in
other
areas
as
well,
and
it's
in
prescription
drugs
as
well.

That
we
have
many
many
elderly
people
in
this
country
who
are
having
a
hard
time
making
about
15
or
16
000
a
year
and
I
do
believe
we
should
increase
funding
for
social
security.
The
way
you
do
that
is
by
lifting
the
cap
right
now,
people
make
a
million
dollars,
contribute
the
same
into
Social
Security.
As
somebody
who
makes
140
000
that's
wrong,
lift
that
Capital
Money
come
in,
we
can
expand,
benefits,
make
life
a
little
bit
easier
of
the
many
seniors.

Few
reasons
I
think
number
one
in
this
state
as
I
understand
it,
and
somebody
can
jump
incorrectly
if
they
have
better
facts.
I
think
the
number
of
young
people,
your
age
who
are
in
high
school
right
now
in
Vermont,
is
substantially
less
than
what
it
was
40
or
50
years
ago.
Okay,
so
what
you
are
seeing
is
birth
rates
are
going
down
in
in
you
know,
prior
Generations
it
was
not
uncommon
for
families
that
five
or
six
kids
today.

A
child
care
costs,
you
15
or
20
000
a
year
per
child,
and
you
make
it
forty
thousand
and
fifty
thousand
working
doesn't
make
a
whole
lot
of
sense.
So
those
are
some
of
the
reasons,
but
bottom
line
is.
We
do
have
a
major
major
shortage
of
workers
in
Vermont
and
in
many
other
parts
of
the
country.
That's
the
bad
news,
but
the
good
news
for
you
is.
That
means
there
are
enormous
opportunities
for
you
out
there.
You
name
the
job
you
can
get
it.
Yes,.

fact,
when
some
employers
who
have
a
business
model
that
says,
look
we're
going
to
pay
low
wages,
we're
going
to
treat
people
like
garbage
and
if
they
quit
that's
great,
because
we'll
hire
other
people
the
next
day,
we
don't
have
to
give
out
any
benefits,
because
people
are
turning
over
all
the
time.
One
of
the
ways
there's
no
magical
answer
to
that
question.
Obviously
we
want
all
workers
to
be
treated
with
respect.
One
of
the
areas
that
I'm
working
very
very
hard
on
and
with
seeing
Trump's
success
is
the
growth
of
unions.

That's
right,
you
got
it
so
what
it
is,
what
a
union
does
is,
if
you
don't
have
you
and
you're
working
in
a
large
company
company
can
do
anything
you
want
to.
You
have
no
recourse.
If
you
have
a
union,
you
have
a
contract
that
says
I'm
going
to
work.
40
hours,
I'm
going
to
be
paid
certain
things
I'm
going
to
get
certain
benefits.
These
are
all
the
working
conditions.
It
is
a
legal
contract
and
a
company
can't
violate
it.

Stand
up
stand
up
so
a
lot
of
the
time.
What
I
noticed
is
that
a
lot
of
the
problems
are
being
solved
with
prescription
goods
and,
like
that's.
That
just
seems
wrong
to
me
like
how
are
we
and
that
you
know
that's
going
into
the
economy
thing
too,
like
using
companies
that
are
selling
these
drugs
that
are
just
fixing
and
trying
to
fix
things,
so
they
don't
work.

And
that
leads
more
important
addiction.
Tendencies
too,
very
good
point.
That's
part
of
the
problem
with
relationship
spend
a
minute
on
that
there
is,
or
was
a
company
called
Purdue
appear,
Purdue
Purdue
Manufacturing,
a
opiate
product
which
was
advertised
as
a
painkiller.
So
if
you
had
a
big
shoulder,
you
take
it
and
use
your
pain.
What
they
forgot
to
tell
you
is
that
if
you
took
it
enough,
you'd
become
addicted
to
it
and
this
particular
company,
which
is
about
as
ugly
as
it
gets
in
terms
of
corporate
greed.

They
suddenly
noticed
that
there
were
communities
in
America
where
they
were
selling
all
kinds
of
drugs,
Way
Beyond
the
population-
and
they
really
did
know
what
they
were
doing
is
feeding
the
drug
habits
of
people.
They
knew
it.
You
know
what
they
did.
They
hired
more
salesmen
to
sell
more
of
their
drugs
to
get
more
people
addicted.
In
other
words,
they
weren't
doing
nothing
that
a
heroin
dealer
doesn't
do
a
heroin
deal
will
give
you
free
heroin
to
get
you
addicted,
and
then
it
charges
you
later
on
all
right,
that's
the
extreme
case,
but.

Think
there
is
an
understanding
that
doctors
have
been
prescribing
too
many
painkillers
and
in
Vermont
around
the
country,
we're
cutting
back
on
the
people,
need
relief
from
pain.
That's
the
problem
and
some
of
these
drugs
work
very
well,
but
I
think
it
has
been
overdone,
but
that's
only
one
part
of
the
problem.
It's
a
real
part
of
it.
I
want
other
hands
what
else
you
have
to
seeing
him
right
here.

talking
about
climate,
very,
very
important
issue

you
can
hold
off

it's
hard
to
talk
about

under
stress

covet

made
it

best

relief

long-term

situation

serious
drugs

impact

spent
an
old
thing
you're
all
aware
of
fentanyl
millions
of
drugs
are
now
laced
with
that
all

is
far
more
dangerous
than
normal.

good

to
your
friends
rather
than
sitting

the
world

always

thing

sensible
gun
safety
legislation

country,

there
are
people
who
hit
the
history
of
their
lives

islands

criminal
activities
should
not
be
holding
guns.

need
extensive
background
checks
of

people
who

purchasing

gun.

mean
stuff
that
most
Americans
by
and
large
agree
with.
The
problem
we
have
is
we
have
what

called
a
gun
lobby.

what
that
means.

and
other

that
are
very
powerful
politically

make
certain
that
we
don't
do
what

should
have
done,
