From YouTube: Aiken This Week - May 2, 2016 : Summer Sports Activities
Description
Jeff Metz, Athletics and Tourism Superintendent; and Seth Holley, Athletics Supervisor; join Aiken This Week for a look ahead to summer activities, events, and sports.
A
Welcome
to
Aiken
this
week
on
Emery
Langston,
today,
I'm
being
joined
by
Jeff
Mets,
who
is
our
superintendent
for
tourism
and
athletics
for
parks,
recreation
and
tourism,
and
what
Seth
Holly,
who
is
the
athletic
supervisor
for
PRT
as
well?
So
thank
you,
gentlemen,
both
for
being
here
today
and
I'm,
excited
to
talk
to
you
all
about
what
it's
going
to
be
happening
at
citizens
for
the
summer
and
some
other
fun
tourism
stuff
that
we
have
going
on
as
well,
and
that
is
just
right
around
the
corner.
Thank.
A
B
C
C
B
There
a
lot
of
similarities
and
working
with
the
hotel
years
and
restaurants,
and
that
type
thing.
So
what.
A
Good
well
y'all
have
such
tremendous
programs,
and
so
many
wonderful
things
that
are
that
happen
out
at
citizens
park
and
all
year
round.
There's
never
a
slow
time
when
it
comes
to
athletics
or
recreation
for
that
matter.
So
in
thinking
of
all
of
that
Seth,
let's
just
jump
right
in
and
tell
us
about
what
we
can
expect
its
citizens
for
the
summer
right.
A
C
C
B
Some
folks
probably
have
noticed
that
where
the
old
skate
park
was
located,
there
off
2nite
road
has
been
demolished
there
and
we're
repaving
that,
and
that
should
be
ready
to
go
me
around
the
first
week
in
May,
but
we're
putting
in
for
outdoor
pickleball
courts,
which
has
been
extremely
popular
in
our
community,
we're
also
putting
in
three
tennis
courts
and
that
location
as
well
just
to
help
us
with
hosting
the
events
that
are
coming
in.
So
we're
real
excited
about
that.
B
I
know
our
pickleball
group
out
there
is
it's
fired
up
about
having
court
solely
for
pickleball
not
having
to
share
those
but
exciting
times
out
there.
We're
also
trying
to
introduce
the
pickleball
merchandise
in
over
to
our
tennis
centers.
It's
been
really
popular
in
places
such
as
Hilton
Head,
so
our
Pro
Shop
we're
working
with
a
couple
of
vendors
to
put
in
pickleball
items
there
that
people
can
come
to
the
tennis
shop
and
buy
those
items.
Try
them
out
test
on
the
demo
I'm
that
type
thing.
So
a
lot
of
exciting
things
going
on
it.
B
B
A
A
C
This
summer,
we'll
have
a
few
major
events:
the
a-si
state
tournament,
which
is
our
all-star
tournament
for
our
girls.
Softball
teams
that
will
run
jun
10th
through
12th,
will
also
have
the
Dixie
boys
state
tournament,
which
that's
for
13
and
14
year
old.
That's
the
baseball
all-star
tournament
that
will
be
july.
Twenty
third,
through
27th,
a
candle
filled.
Two
teams
won
13-1
fourteen-year-old
team
in
that
tournament,
which
will
be
24
teams,
as
I
mentioned
already,
will
have
the
power
5k
august.
C
A
When
y'all
bring
in
tournaments
we're
not
talking
about
any
kind
of
little
type
of
tournament,
I
know
that
this
is
you
know,
it's
a
state
tournament,
the
ones
that
we're
going
to
be
hosting
and
they
draw
in
folks
from
all
over.
So
that's
a
lot
of
preparation
for
for
you
and
your
staff,
and
to
get
all
of
that
coordinated,
I'm
sure
that
that
takes
a
while
to
do
yeah.
B
B
A
B
You
know
girls
volleyball
is
it
can
become
extremely
popular.
Kids,
don't
have
to
sit
out
a
lot
of
the
game
they're
in
there.
It's
fast
paced,
it's
back
and
forth,
and
you
know
it
takes
an
hour
out
of
the
evening.
You
know
where
some
sports
may
take
as
much
as
two
two
and
a
half
hours
in
the
evening
and
that's
that's
difficult
for
some
families.
You
know
to
commit
that
much
time
every
evening,
so
those
quicker
fast-paced
sports.
They
come
out
to
play
for
an
hour
and
go
home.
Those
have
been
really
successful
for
us.
B
You
know
we're
looking
in
the
fall
potentially
expanding
and
girls
softball
or
us
taking
over
the
fall
baseball
program.
We've
been
working
with
a
group
and
we
will
probably
continue
to
work
with
them.
Some,
but
especially
in
the
younger
age
groups,
we
may
get
into
more
of
doing
it
as
we've
done
in
the
spring.
B
A
lot
of
people
like
to
have
two
seasons
now,
instead
of
it
used
to
be
one
season
back
in
the
day,
and
you
know
you
played
baseball
on
spring
football,
follow
basketball
in
the
winter
and
now
you
know
we're
seeing
that
people
won't
need
a
spring
to
have
everything
in
the
fall
to
have
everything
as
well.
So
well,.
B
I
think
so
I
mean
I
think
you
know
15
years
ago
when
travel,
sport,
shirt
blossomed
and
the
baseball
and
softball
world
kids
kind
of
went
toward
one
sport.
You
know
and
I
think
a
lot
of
coach
is
now
a
high
school
and
college
coaches
are
telling
kids
play
multiple
sports,
but
it's
hard
for
them
to
do
that.
If
it's
only
offered
one
time,
I
feel.
C
B
So
we
feel
it's
our
obligation
to
be
comprehensive,
have
different
times
of
the
year
that
you
can
play
a
sport,
and
you
know
if
you're
a
great
soccer
player.
Maybe
you
try
out
tennis
at
this
different
time
of
the
year
or
whatever
it
may
be,
but
we're
just
trying
to
year-round
offer
it,
which
creates
a
lot
of
headaches
for
staff,
is.
C
B
B
I
think
I
think
so.
I
think
you're,
seeing
now
that
high
school
sports
have
developed
the
B
and
C
teams
that
are
they're,
taking
control
of
those
kids
that
are
traveling
in
sports
now
and
and
there's
so
I
think
the
travel
teams
are
kind
of
slowly
diminishing
and
going
downhill.
There
was.
It
was
a
big
deal
by
ten
years
ago,
but
it's
slowly
declined
and
I.
Think
high
school
coaches
are
filling
those
roles
and-
and
you
know,
giving
kids
the
instruction
that
they
want
them
to
hash.
C
B
An
earlier
age,
but
that
does
impact
us
a
little
bit.
We
we've
seen
a
decrease
a
little
bit
in
the
older
age
group.
Kids,
you
know
they're
just
choosing
to
do
other
things
which
naturally,
as
you
get
older
your
your
desires
and
wants
change
a
little
bit
other
than
sports,
but
we're
still
running
strong
and
a
lot
of
the
younger
age
groups.
Trying.
B
A
Don't
I
don't
know
that
that's
necessarily
a
trend,
it's
it's
fairly
new
to
our
area,
but
that's
more
of
a
sport
that
we're
seeing
our
adult
population
playing
and
I
know
that
we
have
a
very
heavy
presence
with
it
with
our
senior
population.
So
are
there
any
other
sports
out
there
or
even
activities
that
you're?
Seeing
that's
on
the
incline
for
for
adults,
yeah.
B
We've
we've
tried
to
do
some
things
with
senior
basketball
and
we've
got
a
group
of
men
that
play
a
couple
times
a
week
up
a
todo
weeks,
which
is
good
to
see.
Of
course,
like
you
mentioned,
pickleball
has
been
in
place
for
over
30
years
out,
west
right.
A
B
C
A
Right
yeah,
when
that,
when
we
saw
the
decline
in
that
yeah,
it's
interesting
to
follow
the
trends
and
that's
something
that
y'all
have
to
watch
very
closely
in
what
you
do
to
make
sure
that
you're
answering
the
needs
of
our
citizen
and
I
think
that
y'all
are
doing
a
fantastic
job.
But
with
meeting
those
demands,
you
mentioned
the
challenges
for
staff
and
septa.
You
want
to
talk
a
little
bit
about
challenges
that
you're
facing
in
athletics,
yeah.
C
C
Know
a
lot
of
people
may
look
at
us
say:
well,
it's
mostly
just
baseball
softball,
but
you
know
we're
trying
to
offer
different
programs
like
the
flag
football
that
was
started
a
few
years
back
and
it's
really
picked
up
another
one
of
our
coaches.
Believe
sorry,
another
one
of
our
issues.
Challenges
has
been
finding
coaches
believe
it.
C
Probably
one
of
the
biggest
ones
that
we
face,
we
have
so
many
teams,
so
many
participants
that
you
know
we
need
the
volunteer
coaches
to
be
able
to
run
our
programs
and
that's
been
one
of
the
toughest
challenges.
Each
season
trying
to
find
enough.
Coaches
for
the
teams
and,
like
Jeff
mentioned
with
the
travel
ball,
trying
to
find
events
to
come
to
aiken
different
tournaments
and
events.
The
travel
ball
has,
you
know,
kind
of
falling
off
a
little
bit.
A
Going
back
to
the
coaches,
I'm
sure
that
this
is,
of
course,
for
our
youth
sports,
that
y'all
have
trouble
finding
coaches,
but
if
somebody
did
want
to
volunteer
to
become
a
coach
I'm
sure
that
they
just
contact
you
and
but
put
their
name
in
the
Hat.
For
that,
what
what
kind
of
background
do
they?
What
do
they
need
to
know?
Somebody
needs
to
know
who
is
interested
in
becoming
a
volunteer
coach?
What
do
they
have
to
go
through?
Basically,.
C
C
Youth
Sports
Association,
all
of
our
coaches.
We
have
to
put
them
through
a
background
check.
They
have
to
pass
that
to
be
able
to
coach
in
our
program.
But
you
know:
that's,
that's
really
it.
You
know
we're
good
about
trying
to
help
our
coaches
and
form
them
of
what
they
need
to
be
doing.
But
you
know
yeah
if
anybody's
willing
to
be
a
volunteer
coach,
I,
just
contact
us
at
citizens
park
and
we'll
be
happy
to
get
them
started
very.
A
C
C
A
C
Two
different
sessions,
a
9
30
to
11
and
an
1115
to
1245,
there's
plenty
of
space
outside
of
the
sprayground
to
set
up
for
parties
and
different
things
that
you
want
to
have
the
rental
fee,
with
that
it's
a
sixty
dollar
rental
fee
and
also
a
forty
dollar
deposit.
So
one
hundred
dollars
total
the
forty
dollar
deposit
is
a
cleanup
/.
You
know
damage
fee
as
long
as
everything
goes
good.
That
will
be
refunded
back
to
you
very.
A
A
B
Citizenry
and
it's
a
little
bit
of
cold
snap
right
now,
snow.
A
A
A
B
We've
had
a
real,
successful
relationship
with
Dixie
boys.
Over
the
years
we
hosted
the
World
Series
last
year
hosting
the
state
tournament
this
year,
and
you
know
just
a
couple
of
weeks
ago,
Seth
and
I
went
to
play
golf
up
and
Clemson.
We
were
called
at
that
time
in
ask
hey.
You
guys,
want
to
host
the
2017
Dixie
boys
world
series
for
the
13
year
old
age
group
in
2017,
and
of
course
we
were
excited
yeah.
B
So
you
know
something
to
look
forward
to
so
really.
Once
you
build
the
relationships
through
traveling
and
people
can
get
in
touch
with
you.
It
really
makes
things
a
lot
easier
sure
we've
had
some
consistency
among
staff.
That's
been
there
a
long
time,
I
just
pick
up
the
phone
and
call
us,
and
we
see
what
we
can
work
out.
Yeah.
B
C
B
A
Y'all
have
a
lot
so
you
so,
with
these
major
events,
you're
pulling
people
from
all
over
our
nation
come
into
Eichen
if
it
in,
for
the
the
more
smaller
events
it
might
be
from
the
southeast,
it
might
just
be
from
our
state,
but
it's
having
that
economic
impact
with
our
hotels
in
our
restaurants
and
I
mean
it's
it's
a
big.
It's
a
big
impact
with.
B
B
We're
or
the
hotels
to
hopefully
no
track
the
the
peaks
and
the
valleys,
and
you
know,
and
when
we
are
our
hotels.
Restaurants
are
struggling,
we're
trying
to
identify
those
times
the
year
and
and
what
we
can
do
to
help
them.
Yeah
I
know
we
want
to
see
everybody
be
successful
as
a
small
business
or
even
large
businesses
that
come
to
a
can
now
what
we
can
do
to
work
with
so.
A
B
A
lot
going
on,
of
course,
our
visitor
center
and
train
museum.
We
have
rentals
going
on
there
all
the
time.
People
are
more
than
welcome
to
come
in
and
rent
that
for
a
special
event,
May
fourteenth,
which
is
a
saturday.
We
have
National
Train
Day,
which
is
a
big
deal
with
train
enthusiasts
and
a
lot
of
the
young
kids
come
out.
We
have
a
miniature
train
that
runs
around
we
give
out.
You
know
they
have
food
concessions,
popcorn
that
type
thing
and
the
balloon
folks
clowns
and
that
type
stuff.
B
Big
deal
for
our
train
museum,
which
really
encompasses
a
lot
of
aikens
history,
and
so
it's
good
for
kids
to
come
out
and
learn
that
side
of
things.
Absolutely
so,
and
of
course,
you
know,
we
just
finished
up
masters
week
with
hosting
a
lot
of
Tours.
We
continue
our
Saturday
tours
throughout
the
year,
and
so
if
people
are
interested
in
learning
more
about
the
history
of
Aiken,
every
Saturday,
we
we
host
a
tour,
but
they
do
fill
up
quick.
A
B
We
actually
have
some
folks
that
are
able
to
sell
your
around.
You
know
different
vendors
and
whatnot,
but
for
the
most
part
we're
here
served
the
farmer
in
specifically,
they
can
County
farmer,
even
though
we
do
take
farmers
from
across
South
Carolina,
but
we
want
to
give
them
a
place,
they
can
come
and
sell
their
products
and
be
successful,
but
they'll.
You
know
once
we
get
through
this
a
little
bit
of
a
cold
spell
and
things
heat
up.
You
know,
I
would
say
around
mid-may,
you
know
really.
B
C
B
Will
from
you
know,
and
thursday
evenings
will,
will
host
everyone
in
the
alley
and
try
to
draw
on
it
a
little
different
crowd,
but
really
to
a
lot
of
produce
is
coming
in
at
that
time,
and
we
need
more
venues
to
move
it
so
and
so
we've
partnered
up
with
the
village
of
Woodside
once
the
aliens
this
fall
I'm
in
the
summer
in
the
fall,
the
village
at
woodside
will
pick
up
and
farmers
will
head
out,
though,
that
way.
So
that's.
A
B
You
know
somebody's
interested
in
coming
out
and
there's
a
lot
of
farmers
in
our
community.
They
can
give
us
a
call
or
go
on
our
website
and
we'll
get
you
an
application.
You
can
pick
one
up
at
the
farmers
market.
You
know
if
you
go
down
on
Saturday
morning,
you
can
look
for
our
farmers
market
manager
as
Amanda
Watson.
Now
she
can
get
you
an
application.
Once
we
receive
that
application
and
look
over
it,
we
will
do
a
site
inspection
on
your
farm.
B
B
We
try
to
keep
our
hands
around
that
we
do
allow
some
resell
items,
you
know
there's
times
or
different
years.
We
may
go
through
a
drought
or
products
may
not
make
or
the
flood
that
have
to
lean
us
and
that
type
stuff.
This
past
fall.
You
know,
that's
that's
out
of
everyone's
control
and
we
don't
want
to
handicap
farmers.
If
we.
B
It,
but
we
are
here
to
serve
those
that
are
growing
it
right
here
in
aiken
for
the
most
part-
and
you
know,
give
them
a
venue
to
do
that
so
well,.
B
B
B
A
That
folks
will
visit
our
farmers
market
either
in
the
alley
or
at
the
farmers
market
or
even
in
the
fall,
get
the
villages
at
woodside.
That's
an
exciting
partnership.
Well
as
we're
wrapping
up
today's
death
I
know
that
y'all
have
a
very
special
partnership
talking
about
partnerships
with
the
wrecking
cream
and
didn't
want
to
end
our
conversation
today
without
talking
about
this
said,
can
you
tell
us
a
little
bit
about
what's
going
on
with
that.
C
Yeah
we've
partnered
with
the
Wrecking
Crew
is
a
leisure
leisure
recreation,
nonprofit
based
out
of
North
Augusta.
It
was
established
in
2002
by
families
and
friends
with
those
with
disabilities.
They
offer
baseball
art,
bowling,
dance
and
other
activities
like
that.
The
past
few
years
we've
run
our
own
buddy
baseball
program
at
citizens.
Part
we
felt
like
it
would
be
better
for
everyone
to
go
through.
This
partnership
will
have
more
things
available
for
those
kids
with
disabilities.
Very.
A
C
A
B
B
A
The
programs
that
you
that
you
and
your
staff
put
on
our
top-notch
and
you're
really
to
be
commended
for
having
that
open
door
and
opened
it
up
those
partnerships
and
just
for
the
wonderful
programs
that
that
you
do
have
going
on.
So
we
hope
that
all
of
you
will
have
a
program
that
you
will
choose
to
join
its
citizens
park
or
join
us
for
a
farmers
market
morning
and
I.
Thank
you,
gentlemen,
for
being
here
today,
and
we
thank
you
for
being
with
us
and
we'll
see
you
next
time
for
eight
in
this
week,.
