Description
Mayor's Press Conference February 12, 2020
A
Good
afternoon
and
welcome
once
again
to
the
mayor's
weekly
press
conference,
it's
always
funny
watching
that
in
that
entrance
role
into
the
show
just
to
make
sure
I'm
not
wearing
the
same
tie,
that
I
was
wearing
all
the
other
times.
You
know,
I
was
just
walking
around
outside,
came
back
from
a
census,
20/20
complete
count.
Committee
meeting
at
the
community
center
and
kind
of
spitting
Hills
know
some
weird
stuff
coming
out
of
the
sky.
A
B
Today
is
gonna,
be
rainy
conditions,
high
of
38
low
of
35,
chance
of
rain
100%
rainfall
pause
week
over
1
inch,
flash
flood
watch
until
4:00
p.m.
from
4:00
p.m.
tonight
so
10
a.m.
tomorrow
morning.
Tomorrow
morning,
rain/snow
showers,
I
have
39
1217
chance
of
precipitation
is
50%
Friday,
mostly
cloudy
to
mostly
sunny
skies
high
of
25
over
14
Saturday,
mostly
sunny
high
41
well
32
sunday,
cloudy
high
44
low
of
28
present
state,
mostly
cloudy
high
51
44
Tuesday
showers,
high
55
low
of
33
and
next
Wednesday,
mostly
quality
high
47
low
25
right.
A
B
A
B
A
A
To
watch
no,
it's
kind
of
cool
yeah.
What's
cool
from
here,
thanks
for
sharing
the
intro,
you
know,
census
2020
is
coming
up
on
us
very
fast
enumeration.
It's
going
to
begin
April,
1,
I'm,
gonna,
put
Ryan
on
the
spot
here.
Ryan
I
need
you
to
zoom
in
on
this.
If
you
would
and
I
know
it's
really
small
and
but
I
know
you
you're
you've
got
mad
skills
for
being
able
to
zoom
in
on
something
I'm
throwing
this
out
there.
A
Just
so
you
know
there
are
jobs
that
you
can
apply
to,
that
are
related
to
census,
2020
and
in
Athens.
I
just
got
an
update,
there's
a
meeting
going
on
right
now
and
as
soon
as
we're
done
with
this,
with
my
press
conference,
I'm
heading
back
to
the
community
center,
and
they
were
talking
about
the
jobs
here
in
Athens
County
that
they
can
be.
A
A
vehicle
is
highly
preferred:
they're,
mostly
looking
for
people
who
do
have
vehicles,
they
do
have
some
jobs
that
don't
require
vehicle,
but
please
go
to
2020
census,
dot,
gov,
slash
jobs
and,
like
I,
said,
there's
plenty
of
jobs
out
there
to
be
had
I
I
got
some
really
disappointing
news
to
be
honest
with
everyone
who's
watching
today,
that
of
the
25
counties
in
the
region.
Here
in
the
state
of
Ohio
in
our
particular
census
region,
Athens
counties
in
last
place
when
it
comes
to
having
people
applying
for
jobs.
A
So
folks
we
got
to
step
it
up.
These
are
flex
hours,
they
are
great,
paying
weekly
pay,
training
is
provided
and
the
training
I
believe
you're
paid
for
your
training
so
and
it's
on
the
website,
the
city's
websites
and
so
know
that
check
it
out.
Please
look
at
it.
You
have
to
be
18
years
of
age
or
at
least
18
years
old
in
order
to
begin
working
on
the
census,
so
as
a
as
a
numerator.
A
So
please
go
to
the
city's
website.
I'm
gonna
ask
Ryan
and
Scott
to
put
it
in
heavy
rotation
on
Twitter,
on
Facebook,
on
everything,
but
but
equally
important.
Please
do
not
forget
to
be
counted.
That
is
almost
well.
No,
that's
more
critical
than
the
hiring
of
new
enumerators
I
say
that
lightly.
We
need
people
to
to
apply,
but
we
also
really
need
to
make
sure
that
we
get
the
best
most
thorough
count
possible.
Remember
if
you're
here
for
the
majority
of
your
time
over.
A
A
Miller
Avenue,
changing
gears
on
you
going
in
the
direction
of
engineering
and
Public
Works
Miller
avenues,
there's
a
gas
main
line
replacement,
which
is
the
10th
through
the
14th.
So
that
is
under
way.
Keep
it
in
mind
that
the
contractor
at
Columbia,
Gas
and
contractor
are
in
our
pipeline
is
going
to
start
replacing
that
line
on
Miller
Ave.
A
So
just
be
aware
of
that,
there's
been
a
lot
of
that
going
on
in
the
city
as
of
late.
The
other
thing
is
that
there's
going
to
be
an
open
house,
this
is
an
open
house
for
the
West
Union
Street
improvement
project
open
house.
It
will
be
at
the
Innovation
Center
it'll
be
Tuesday
evening,
Tuesday
late
afternoon,
early
from
3
p.m.
to
6
p.m.
A
A
This
is
again
we're
looking
for
input,
we're
looking
for
individuals,
input,
business
input,
company
input
on
the
planning
of
those
improvements
on
West,
Union
Street,
and
also
considering
an
extension
of
Herald
Avenue,
which
will
greatly
reduce
the
impacts
that
we
see
with
water
line
or
sewer
line
breakage
at
the
intersection
of
Schaffer
and
West
State
Street
or,
more
importantly,
if
there
were
to
be
a
break
at
Central,
Avenue
and
West
State
Street,
there
would
really
be
an
impact
of
people
being
able
to
get
in
and
get
out
plus.
We
have
a
lot
of
businesses.
A
We
have
the
distillery
for
the
cider
house,
West
Union
cider
house.
We
also
have
Stewart
McDonald,
which
is
really
growing.
We
have
the
Innovation
Centre,
we
have
the
Athens
public
transit.
We
also
have
the
service
garage
for
the
city
of
Athens,
which
is
down
there
and
then
there's
the
our
beloved
Sandlot
baseball
that
takes
place
down
there,
so
that
connector
would
be
helpful
with
all
things.
A
West
West,
8th,
Street,
arts
parks
and
recreation
has
a
number
of
things
going
on.
They've
got
we
wigglers
and
child
watch
will
be
cancelled
for
Monday
February
17th.
There
will
be
no
way
wigglers
or
child
watch
due
to
the
healthy
hoops
camp,
which
is
taking
place
and
I'll
get
to
that
in
a
moment.
There's
a
Valentine's
promotion
at
the
community
center,
where
pink
or
red
and
get
get
in
for
free
on
Valentine's
Day
February
14th
sounds
like
it
would
be
fun
to
go
down
there
and
put
in
a
good
workout
on
Valentine's
Day.
A
You
know
make
yourself
really
fit
for
your
Valentine
or
something
like
that.
So
anyway,
come
down
and
check
that
out
healthy
hoops,
free
for
all
abilities
day
camp
for
children,
ages,
5
to
16.
This
is
gonna,
take
place,
as
I
mentioned
previously.
February
17th,
9
a.m.
to
6
p.m.
join
us
for
free
all
abilities
day.
Camp
activities
for
children,
like
I,
said
I
already
mentioned
that
basketball
games
and
giveaways
lunch
will
be
provided.
Community
center
dinner
will
begin
at
4:30
p.m.
register
online,
or
you
can
registration,
you
can
drop
it
off.
A
Drop-Off
and
childcare
will
begin
at
7:30
a.m.
and
end
at
5:30
p.m.
I
will
be
down
there.
I'll
be
down
there,
I
believe
around
3
o'clock,
shooting
some
hoops
and
playing
with
all
ability
players
down
there
on
that
particular
day.
So
keep
that
in
mind
again
the
date
for
that
is
going
to
be
February
17th
at
the
community
center
there's.
Also,
the
arts
West
the
Ohio
Valley
summer
theater
will
presenting
its
annual
summer
youth
camp
in
conjunction
with
arts
West
that
will
be
June
1st
through
June
19th
of
2020.
A
If
you
want
more
information
on
that,
I
would
suggest
that
you
reach
out
to
either
Emily
beverage
at
well.
I
would
just
reach
out
to
Emily
beverage
at
Arts
West.
You
can
also
reserve
your
spot
at
Obst,
org,
slash
camp,
all
caps,
so
again
worth
finding
out
more
about
or
partaking
in
Thursday
February
20th
from
6
to
9
p.m.
A
there
will
be
the
square,
dance,
social
and
jam
with
Joe
burdock,
an
award-winning
band
band,
big
possum,
$6
donation.
It
will
be
from
7
to
9
p.m.
for
the
the
dancing
portion
of
it.
If
you
want
to
just
come,
listen
to
the
the
string
jam
or
jump
into
the
string
jam.
That'll
start
at
6:00
p.m.
February
21st
from
8:00
to
10:45
p.m.
is
the
drum
and
music
jam.
That
is
a
five
to
ten
dollar
donation,
suggested
donation
and
come
in
in
Jam.
A
At
that
particular
event,
the
last
thing
I
have
I
get
these
from
time
to
time
what
I
love
them?
I
love
receiving
them
and
I'm
gonna
keep
this
nameless,
but
it's
it's
fun
just
to
share.
I
got
this
from
a
East
elementary
school
student,
but
he
goes
on
to
say,
or
she
goes
on
to
say
they
go
on
to
say:
I
go
to
school
at
East
elementary,
but
east
west
go
together
for
two
to
three
years.
I
want
to
talk
to
you
about
how
to
stop
polluting
the
environment.
A
Two
types
of
pollution
are
gas
and
carbon
monoxide.
Gas
is
made
of
octane,
which
breaks
down
into
carbon
monoxide,
which
builds
around
ozone
and
traps
heat
and
causes
global
warming.
Second,
it
hurts
animals
by
littering
not
recycling
and
dumping
trash
into
the
oceans.
I
need
you
to
put
recycling
signs
on
the
side
of
all
recyclable
things
so
that
we
know
what
is
recyclable.
Second
I
need
you
to
give
coal
attacks
because
it
takes
up
land,
pollutes
the
air
and
hurts
the
earth
use
that
money
to
make
solar
panels.
Now.
A
Solar
energy
is
cheaper,
sincerely
and
I
sent
a
letter
back
to
this
particular
student
and
addressed
some
of
his
concerns
and
mentioned
to
him
or
her.
Are
they
that
we
have
big-bellied
recycling
containers
up
on
Court
Street
I
have
had
them
there
since
2017
our
last
metric
that
I
can
share
with
you,
which
I
shared
with
this
individual,
that
in
2018
we
don't
have
the
numbers
for
2019,
yet
2018
numbers
we
will.
We
were
able
to
divert
39%
of
what
was
otherwise
going
to
the
landfill
of
recyclable
materials.
A
So
we've
done
a
great
job
of
kind
of
changing
that
narrative
on
Court
Street.
We
never
had
recycling
on
Court
Street
prior
to
2017
in
2017
those
numbers
were
I,
believe
it
was
26%
diversion
rate
of
recyclables
that
were
sent
off
to
the
recycling
center
versus
being
sent
to
the
landfill.
But
I
did
want
to
share
from
this
individual.
