Hurricane tips to be prepared before, during, and after a storm

Guys of the Biloxi fire chief hurricane season is from June to November of each year and the City of Biloxi wants to help you prepare your family and property for storms and flooding. Are you ready, as the city's outreach program, to help get you ready for storm season by bringing together agencies that work with storm preparation?

In this program we will educate and remind residents about the precautions they need to take before, during and after a storm, whether you are a new or long time resident. This is news you can use.

The city engineer for the city of Biloxi after a disaster such as a major flood, tropical storm or hurricane residents, typically have debris.

B

Vegetative debris can build up in yards from things such as downed trees and limbs, or even washed up sea grasses, depending on how high the water Rose homes can be damaged due to Falling trees or high winds or could have suffered water damage from roof damage or Rising Waters Rising Waters that get into homes can damage furniture and appliances.

So what do you do with all of that debris after a storm?

After you take pictures and document your damages, you can start moving, removing the debris to the street for removal by the city or its contractors. The city is not allowed to enter a private property to pick up debris, so residents are required to get the debris to the side of the street. All debris placed at the street has to be sorted into separate piles. Different types of piles have to be disposed of at different landfills.

Residents will need to make five debris piles, Electronics appliances also called white goods, hazardous materials paint, oil and chemicals vegetative materials which have to be cut to four foot lengths, construction materials such as shingles, Tile, carpet and wood.

When making the separate piles, there are a few things to remember that are very important. First, don't pile up debris on vacant, Lots, the city or their contractors are not allowed to pick up debris from vacant. Lots.

Second, make sure that your debris piles are far enough apart that they can be picked up without disturbing your other piles and make sure that those piles are as close to, but not in the street as possible, so that equipment can reach them and last make sure your piles are at least five feet away from fire, hydrants mailboxes fences, power, pole, guy wires or any other obstruction.

If these guidelines aren't followed, the city may not be able to pick up your debris following these pointers will help the city get the debris, moved removed as quickly as possible.

Now that we know how to pile up debris, how long is it going to take the city to remove that debris.

As soon as it's safe to drive after the storm, the city will start to push debris out of the city streets and start to assess how much debris is present. Depending on the volume of debris. The city will either pick up the debris or will bring in a debris removal contractor this typically starts within a week.

The city encourages residents to get their debris to the right-of-way as soon as possible, but we do know that it takes time how long it takes to collect all the debris to be removed really depends on how much debris is present.

When there is not a lot of debris present, the city can typically make one pass through the entire city. In two weeks, the city does a minimum of three complete passes through the city to make sure all the debris is removed before making the last pass, the city will publicize that information, so that residents know ahead of time.

Remember that flood insurance policies take 30 days to go into effect and no policies are issued once a hurricane enters the Gulf, whether you're in a flood zone or not flood insurance is very important.

Hurricanes, do not know or respect flood zone boundary lines. Now it's also a great time to check your property for potential problems clean up around your yard, make sure there are no obstructions in your ditches or drainage easements.

If you have flood vents in your home or accessory structures, clean them now and remove any obstructions so that they can function properly, also be sure to collect all of your important documents and put them together in one safe place. You can never be too careful and it pays to be prepared.

Lastly, if you have to make repairs after a storm check with our office, to make sure that your contractor is licensed and insured, never give a contractor cash in advance and make sure that he pulls a permit in his name. If you have any questions, feel free to call our office at 228.

Hello, I'm Michael Strickland, captain of the Marine Patrol Division, with the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources I'd like to take a few minutes to remind the residents of Mississippi the importance of preparing your vessels for the upcoming hurricane season. Preparation is the key so be sure to have a plan in place. First file a flow plan, an example of information contained in the float plan, can be located on our website at www.dmr.ms.gov.

It is not necessary to file a flow plan with our agency, but it is a great tool to distribute to family and friends.

Don't wait until the last minute to start your relocation plans start early and allow yourself ample time to accomplish your goals, make sure your vessel is seaworthy operational and is equipped with the required safety items when transiting to your intended Safe Harbor location, be aware of your surroundings and to wake your vessel may cause many of the Safe Harbor locations are in Shallow, narrow, waterways, surrounded by private property. So please be aware of your speed and awake Your Vessel causes as to not damaged personal property storm or no storm.

As the vessel Captain you're responsible for your wake and the Damage it may cause be aware of the water hazards, especially after the storm, when debris will be more prevalent when securing Your Vessel, please ensure that you are not anchoring or Mooring Your Vessel in a marked navigational Channel obstructing a navigational channel is a violation and you could be cited and face possible. Fines also consider your vessel size for proper Mooring to ensure that it does not come loose during the storm or its surge.

If you'll be utilizing a generator on Your Vessel, please ensure you have adequate ventilation to prevent the accumulation of carbon monoxide gases.

Carbon monoxide is a colorless and odorless gas that can lead to Serious tissue damage and possible death if you'll be storing excess, Fuel On Your Vessel, please ensure that the storage canisters are secured properly as to not be introduced into the environment. This could result in short and long-term damage to Mississippi's natural resources.

It is also important to remember that the office of Marine Patrol must suspend operations once to sustain wind speeds, reach 45 miles per hour. Wind speeds must subside to less than 45 miles per hour before Marine Patrol can resume emergency responses.

Lastly, know the limitations of you and your vessel. Please do not underestimate the dangers associated with a named storm, be safe, start planning now, and thank you.

Hello I'm kicking with the Humane Society of south Mississippi, it's important to be sure to include your pets needs and your disaster preparedness plan and evacuation pack. Here are some tips for your pets before, during and after a storm, be sure that your pet is microchipped and that your contact information is up to date. Hssm can assist you with this for a minimal fee, make sure your pet has a proper ID and make sure you have recent photos handy, bring crates large enough for your pet to stand or lie down in comfortably.

Take your pet's Veterinary records with you, as well as toys and disposable garbage bags put together an emergency kit for your pet, make sure you have enough food, water and medication to last up to several days. Know your local evacuation centers and call ahead to see if they accept pets and remember if it's not safe for you, it's not safe for your pets.
