Description
What’s buzzin’ in Bloomington? New police officers were sworn in during a recent council meeting. Grant money was also accepted form the Bloomington Crime Prevention Association. Plus, a special partnership stocked VEAP with tons of fresh produce this year.
A
Welcome
to
Bloomington
today
I'm
Laurie
Schulte
thanks
for
joining
us.
First,
we
bring
you
the
buzz
for
the
weekend,
December
16th
through
the
22nd
and
we're
starting
off
with
a
wrap
on
a
recent
City
Council
meeting.
There
was
a
human
rights
Proclamation
grant
money
was
accepted,
but
first
the
swearing
in
of
new
police
officers.
Seven
officers
were
sworn
in
during
the
December
7th
council
meeting.
They
began
employment
in
early
November.
This
hiring
was
the
result
of
recent
officer
retirements.
The
new
officers
completed
five
weeks
of
orientation
training.
B
A
Those
officers
were
sworn
in.
The
mayor
read
the
Human
Rights
Day
proclamation,
the
city
declared
December
10th
human
rights
day.
It
recognizes
the
importance
of
diversity
and
equal
rights.
The
Human
Rights
Commission
celebrates
this
day
every
year
in
honor
of
the
declaration
that
was
signed
in
1948
by
the
United
Nations
General
Assembly.
It.
C
A
At
that
same
meeting,
the
council
approved
the
acceptance
of
a
39
thousand
dollar
grant
from
the
bloomington
crime
prevention
Association.
The
money
will
go
to
both
the
police
department
and
Human
Services
to
pay
for
things
like
National
Night,
Out
software
to
analyze,
cell
phones,
the
k-9
unit
and
the
Bloomington
Academy
for
safe
seniors.
Bcp
a
raises
money.
Every
year
during
its
bookham
sale,
60
volunteers,
pitched
in
to
turn
the
former
home
value
site
into
a
giant
used.
Bookstore
deanna
Jergens
told
us
this
summer
how
she
first
got
involved
with
the
Bloomington
I'm
prevention.
C
A
Rest
is
history.
The
book
I'm
sale
got
its
start
in
1992.
The
sale
grows
each
year
and
is
now
one
of
the
largest
of
its
kind
in
the
Upper
Midwest
over
at
public
health.
Another
partnership
is
benefiting
the
community,
a
joint
project
supplied
veep
with
tons
of
fresh
produce.
This
year,
the
food
shelf
and
public
health
worked
together
to
bring
more
than
six
tons
of
veggies
and
fruit
to
veep.
Between
june
and
october,
public
health
supplied
the
support
and
funds
through
the
statewide
health
improvement
program
or
ship.
A
The
plan
was
carried
out
by
a
team
of
volunteers
who
picked
up
the
produce
from
the
Bloomington
Richfield,
any
dyna
farmers
markets
each
week
throughout
the
summer,
more
than
70
volunteer
hours
made
it
possible.
The
goal
was
to
reduce
chronic
disease
risk
factors
in
the
community
by
increasing
access
to
fresh
produce,
fruits
and
vegetables
are
some
of
the
least
affordable
foods
for
low-income
families.
A
E
Holiday
tip
that
I
can
share
with
you
regarding
your
home.
Is
this
when
you
do
arrive
back
at
your
home
with
presents
make
sure
that
you
bring
them
in
and
put
them
in
a
place?
That's
not
visible
to
somebody
from
the
outside.
Looking
in
a
lot
of
times
during
the
holiday
seasons,
people
will
try
to
scam
individuals
and
they
will
approach.
E
You
at
your
house
knock
on
the
door
and
pretend
they're
somebody
they're
not
and
try
to
at
least
see
in
your
house
or
even
get
inside,
especially
with
children
during
this
time,
make
sure
that
you
tell
your
children
that
they
should
come.
Get
you
to
answer
the
door,
make
sure
that
when
you
leave
you
lock
your
doors,
turn
your
alarms
on
and
notify
neighbors.
E
If
you're
going
to
be
gone
for
long
periods
of
time,
so
they
can
also
watch
your
house
and
if
you
have
mail
piling
up
or
things
like
that,
they
can
take
it
in
for
you
especially
packages
things
like
that.
That's
it
on
doorsteps,
for
periods
of
time,
it's
often
an
indicator
that
someone's
not
there
and
it
makes
an
opportunity
for
a
burglar
to
come
and
case
your
house
or
actually
break
in
that.
A
Is
the
buzz
on
Bloomington
today
for
the
week
at
December
16th
through
the
22nd?
If
you
would
like
to
watch
other
stories
from
the
show
go
to
this
week's
playlist,
there
you'll
find
a
story
on
the
boutique
at
creekside,
a
place
that
may
help
you
check
out
those
items
on
your
gift
list.
There's
also
a
piece
on
a
holiday
performance
by
a
local
dance
group
check
those
out
and
thanks
for
watching.
