Description
On this week's episode of Bloomington Today we'll feature some of our favorite summer themed segments.
A
News
and
events
happen
every
day
in
Bloomington.
We
understand
that
some
residents
don't
have
30
minutes
to
watch
a
full
newscast.
That's
why
Bloomington
today
is
expanding
its
half
hour.
Cable,
show
format
to
short
single
segments
geared
toward
yours
on
the
go
like
this
story
at
the
demolition
of
the
Alpha
business
center.
This
will
kick
off
the
lyndale
week
project
because
we
want
to
bring
you
the
buzz
in
Bloomington,
wherever
you
are
in
the
most
convenient
format
possible.

shorter
segments

A
Welcome
to
Bloomington
today,
I'm
Caitlin,
real
thanks
for
joining
us
summer,
is
in
full
swing.
So
what
better
time
than
now
to
feature
a
summer
themed
Bloomington
today,
throughout
this
episode,
we'll
be
sharing
some
of
our
favorite
summer
activities,
as
well
as
highlighting
some
safety
tips
for
residents
to
keep
in
mind
during
the
warmer
months
in
Minnesota.
Read
Erickson
brings
us
this
story
highlighting
proper
food
handling,
while
picnicking
and
barbecuing
this
summer
on
a.
C
B
C
C
We'd
like
to
have
warm
soapy
water,
so
running
water
paper
towels,
that's
the
ideal
situation
for
really
properly
cleaning
your
hands
and
getting
any
bacteria
off
of
them
doesn't
always
happen
here.
We
are,
we've
got
some
running
water
over
there,
but
it's
not
warm.
So
if
you
don't
have
hot
running
water,
you
can
use
hand
sanitizer,
it's
not
a
replacement
for
hand-washing
in
any
way
shape
or
form,
but
it
is
a
good
second
place.
D
Brought
a
little
cooler
here,
you'll
see
I'll
open
it
up.
We've
got
some
blue
ice
packs
that
are
you
know,
pre
frozen
here
and
down
and
inside
as
well
to
keep
the
the
food
chilled
I
have
in
this
cooler
our
cooking
utensils,
as
well
as
a
couple
of
packs
of
some
precooked
brats
that
will
be
grilling
up
here
shortly
and
also
a
couple
of
packs
of
ground
beef
patties
that
are
all
packaged
here
and
we'll.
We
also
have
a
couple
of
containers
of
summer
chicken
breasts
that
will
be
growing
up
and
especially
temperature.
D
D
C
Cold
foods
cold
during
the
picnic
or
grilling
event
is
real
important,
because
when
foods
get
too
worn,
they
can
grow
bacteria.
So
you
don't
have
the
luxury
of
a
refrigerator.
You
can
rely
on
coolers,
which
we
showed
earlier
with
Jeff
having
ice
packs,
cooler,
the
potentially
hazardous
foods,
meat
salads,
those
kinds
of
things
in
the
cooler-
if
you
don't
have
that
or
once
you
start
serving.
This
is
a
great
way
to
do
your
best
at
keeping
things
cold.
C
So
if
you've
got
a
salad,
you
can
submerge
it
in
a
bowl
and
then
fill
ice
around
it
and
that
will
do
a
pretty
good
job
of
keeping
the
food
cold.
Another
thing
that
you
want
to
be
sure
is
that
you've
got
dispensing
utensils
so
that
people
are
actually
using
not
using
their
bare
hands
to
get
the
food,
so,
for
instance,
on
the
pickles
over
here
we
just
have
a
fork
so
that
people
can
use
the
fork
rather
than
going
in
and
grabbing
it
with
their
bare
hands
using.
B
D
We're
looking
for
a
minimum
tap
of
170
on
chicken
breast
this
one
right
here
is
a
little
bit
over
180,
so
it's
fully
cooked.
This
is
fully
done
ready
to
serve
just
make
sure
that
the
juices
of
the
meat
run
clear
you
can
cut
it
open,
have
a
look
to
see
that
it's
fully
cooked
inside
so
I.
It
at
least
want
to
make
sure
that
the
meat
juices
run
clear
same
with
the
with
the
chicken.
B
A
Picnics
and
barbecues
seem
to
go
hand
in
hand
with
swimming
and
boating
fun.
Let's
take
a
look
at
some
advice:
hennepin
county
water
patrol
gives
residents
about
safe
practices
while
out
on
area
lakes,
meet
lieutenant
art,
Saunders
he's
with
the
Hennepin
County
water
patrol.
He
and
his
teams
are
out
on
all
the
Hennepin
County
lakes,
making
sure
boat
operators,
passengers
and
residents
enjoying
the
lakes
are
being
safe.
When.
E
We're
out
on
the
lakes
we're
looking
for
people
who
are
speeding.
We
are
looking
for
people
who
might
be
sitting
on
a
gun
whale,
we're
looking
for
people
who
are
just
acting
in
an
unsafe
manner
and
again
it's
our
whole
purpose.
The
Sheriff's
Office
water
patrol
is
to
educate
people.
We
don't
want
to
be
the
bad
guys.
We
would
rather
educate
you,
so
you
would
learn
so
you'll
be
safe.
Although.
E
Was
out
about
March
twentieth
this
year
and
the
waters
are
still
very
cold
right
now,
I
did
check
the
temperature
in
Lake
Minnetonka.
It
was
59
degrees
this
morning
at
50
degrees.
Without
a
life
jacket,
your
body
is
losing
about
26
times
the
heat
faster
than
it
would.
If
you
were
outside
put
yourself
without
a
life
jacket,
you
have
about
nine
minutes
to
last
in
the
water
before
you
lose
consciousness.
E
A
E
Will
do
stops
to
do
safety
checks
to
make
sure
you're
in
compliance
with
with
DNR
rules
or
even
navigational
rules,
just
to
say
that
you
have
enough
life
jackets,
/
people
that
you
have
a
throw
mobile,
that
you
have
your
fire
extinguisher
on
hand,
and
it
does
give
us
that
probable
cause,
which,
again,
is
why
we
say
if
you're
going
to
be
drinking
while
you're
out
on
the
lake
get
the
designated
driver.
Bush.
A
Lake
only
allows
boats
with
engines
that
produce
six
horsepower
or
less
on
them
so
often
times,
you'll
see
boats,
trolling
or
moving
slowly.
That
isn't
the
case
on
all
lakes
in
Hennepin
County,
however,
and
on
hot
days
when
the
lakes
are
crowded
with
votes,
awareness
is
the
key
to
keeping
yourself
and
other
safe
on.
E
A
high
traffic
voting
day
I
would
recommend
that
you
slow
down
it's
just
a
safety
factor
for
everybody.
You
have
to
be
able
to
see
out
here
who's
in
front
of
you.
If
it
could
be
a
kayaker,
it
could
be
a
person
in
a
canoe.
It
could
be
a
swimmer.
There
are
swimming
events
out
on
lakes.
Speed.
Is
that
the
most
important
thing
and.
E
The
most
important
thing
that
needs
to
be
done
when
you
bring
your
boat
out
as
one
pull
the
bolt
plug.
This
has
to
be
out
for
state
law.
It's
going
to
get
rid
of
all
the
lake
water
that
might
have
accumulated
on
the
bottom
of
the
boat.
You'll
also
want
to
check
around
the
trailer
for
any
type
of
weeds
that
are
sticking
onto
the
trailer
onto
the
propeller
on
to
the
motor
anywhere
on
the
boat.
You
want
to
pull
those
off
the
best,
the
best
you
can
going
from
Lake
to
Lake.
E
A
Are
a
great
perk
to
living
in
Minnesota
and
well?
There
are
rules
to
be
followed
when
it
comes
to
boating.
Lieutenant
Saunders
says,
with
some
cooperation
and
courtesy
to
others
on
the
water,
everyone
can
have
a
good
time
and
be
safe
and
whether
you're
on
the
water
or
on
the
land
city
of
Bloomington
staff
are
dedicated
to
making
the
Healthy
Choice
the
easy
choice.
It's
that
goal
that
helped
develop
the
city's
hiking
and
biking
map
take
a
look
thanks
to
a
brand
new
hiking
and
biking
map.
A
funded
through
a
statewide
health
improvement
program.
A
F
Trying
to
encourage
people
to
live
more
healthy
lifestyles
get
out,
be
more
active.
It's
a
lot
easier
to
go
out
and
be
active
to
ride
a
bike
or
to
be
on
a
trail
when
you
know
where
you're
going-
and
you
know,
what's
involved
a
little
bit
of
comfort
level
kind
of
knowing
Jesus
if
I
go
here,
what's
going
to
be
there,
how
long
is
it?
Where
do
I
park?
You
know
and
what
are
the
amenities
that
I
can
expect
to
have
there,
so
it
makes
your
choices
a
little
bit
easier.
The.
F
Excited
to
have
it
we
recognize
this
is
our
first
draft.
If,
if
anyone
sees
anything
that
they
have
an
issue
or
gosh,
you
know
there's
a
place
where
I
think
you
should
include
on
your
bike
map.
You
know
feel
free
to
give
me
a
contact
in
the
Parks
and
Recreation
Division
and
I
would
imagine
that
we'll
be
updating
this
map
sometime
down
the
road
and.
A
On
a
given
day,
there
can
be
dozens
of
children
taking
their
turn
on
the
monkey
bars
or
swings
at
area
playgrounds.
Take
a
look
at
how
city
playground
inspectors
are
keeping
your
kids
safe,
while
they
play
play.
Drums
are
meant
to
be
run
on,
jumped
on
and
expected
to
withstand
the
inevitable
roughhousing
that
will
occur
on
them.
The
six
certified
playground
safety
inspectors
on
staff,
embrace
that
fact,
while
making
it
their
personal
goals
to
keep
all
54
of
bloomington's
playgrounds
as
safe
as
possible.
There.
G
G
We
want
to
protect
those
children
and
give
them
a
challenging
but
safe
environment
in
which
to
play.
The
second
thing
that
is
important
is
the
city's
liability
related
to
playgrounds
and
potential
playground
injuries,
and
we
certainly
want
to
do
everything
we
can
to
minimize
that
that
liability
should
a
child
be
injured.
So
if
we
have
safe
playgrounds,
hopefully
both
of
those
things
will
be
accomplished.
The.
A
G
Have
those
inspectors
that
are
out
there
checking
things
all
of
the
time
we're
taking
calls
from
residents
if
they
notice
anything?
You
know
where
we
want
people
to
feel
comfortable,
letting
us
know
and
I
think
that
over
those
30-plus
years,
we're
very
fortunate
in
saying
we
have
not
had
any
serious
injuries,
in
other
words,
injuries
serious
enough
that
it
might
have
caused
a
lawsuit
or
something
like
that
to
happen.
Man,
and
certainly
the
liability
of
the
city
is
important,
but
most
of
all
we
just
haven't
had
serious
injuries
on
our
playgrounds
and
I.
A
New
playground,
equipment
installed
in
our
parks
goes
through
a
rigorous
playground.
Safety
audit
and
the
playground
at
westwood
elementary
school
underwent
that
safety
audit.
Just
a
few
weeks
ago,
a
playground
inspector
will
first
inspect
the
scene
for
obvious
problems
like
broken
glass,
trash
and
ruined
equipment.
Look.
H
Down
look
up,
I
like
to
use
these
gauges
and
probes
here
and
check
openings
and
the
what
we're
looking
for
is
heading
trappings
when
I
use
these
anything
that
a
little
kid
can
get
into
and
not
get
out
of,
so
you
want
to
make
sure
that
the
dist
or
soul
probe
if
it
fits
through
an
opening
with
50
pounds
of
pressure
or
less
that
this
head
probe
can
follow.
Here's
an
example
and
it's
it
can
be
deceiving.
You
know
you
got
to
be
able
to
check
any
opening
you
have
if
this
goes
through.
H
This
has
to
go
through
and
it
does
pass
cleanly
through
there
same
with
this
cargo
net.
Some
of
our
playgrounds
have
smaller
cargo
nets,
real
firm,
cable
inside
when
you're
hanging
by
one
it's
made
to
hold
its
shape
or
even
can
constrict
anja.
So
again,
if
the
torso
probe
goes
through
the
head.
Pro
must
follow.
Also.
A
I
A
We've
discussed
places
for
adults
and
kids
to
get
outdoors
and
have
some
fun
this
summer.
But
what
about
your
pet
Bloomington's
got
you
covered
there
as
well,
if
you've
never
been
a
summer
must
is
taking
your
family
pet
to
the
off-leash
dog
recreation
area.
Take
a
look
at
this
next
story,
where
we
highlighted
the
recreation
area
and
explained
how
the
city
continues
to
get
the
most
bang
for
its
buck
by
saving
money
on
doggie
cleanup
banks,
Bloomington's
off
leash
recreation
area
for
dogs
is
25
acres
of
pure
pooch.
A
Heaven
large
grassy
areas
for
the
pups
to
play
in
wooded
trails
and
even
a
pond
for
your
pet
to
cool
off
in
keeping
this
park
and
other
city
parks
well
maintained,
is
a
must
in
an
effort
to
reduce
costs
on
doggie
cleanup
bags,
while
still
providing
that
service
to
park.
Goers
the
city
came
up
with
a
cost-effective,
give
and
take
solution.
So.
G
We've
come
up
with
is
a
system
where
the
people
who
actually
use
the
parks
with
their
dogs
provide
bags,
meaning
the
bags
like
you
get
vegetables
and
fruit
from
the
grocery
store,
or
your
Sunday
paper
in
and
we've
actually
built
containers
where
people
can
bring
bags
to
share
and
then
can
take
a
bag
when
they,
when
they
need
to
use
it.
Giving.
A
G
City
certainly
benefits
we're
looking
to
continue
to
provide
quality
service
at
the
most
affordable
price
as
economically
as
we
can,
and
so,
if
we're
not
having
to
spend
thousands
of
dollars
on
doggie
bags,
we
can
take
those
resources
and
and
put
them
toward
really
more
important
and
necessary
types
of
things.
I
think
we'll
all
benefit
from
it.
The.
A
G
Over
time,
people
will
get
the
idea
of
the
change
we're
trying
to
make
and
will
have
will
have
the
ability
at
some
point
down
the
road
to
take
out
those
those
older
dispensers
and
we
won't
be
buying
the
doggie
bags
anymore,
and
people
will
be
supplying
and
helping
themselves
in
helping
others
at
the
same
time.
Finally,.
A
To
close
our
summer
themed
Bloomington
today,
let's
look
back
at
the
2011
river
rendezvous.
This
segment
will
give
residents
a
taste
of
what's
coming
up
and
a
reminder
to
mark
their
calendars
for
this
year's
festival
that
will
take
place
on
September
20th
at
the
pond
Dakota
Mission
Park
River
rendezvous
is
a
living
history
festival
held
at
bloomington's
popular
pond
dakota
mission
park.
Real
actors
demonstrate
the
lifestyles
of
people
living
in
the
Minnesota
River
Valley
in
the
19th
century,
but
before
the
event
is
open
to
the
public,
it's
open
to
area
students,
he'd.
J
Stay
alive
about
1,400
kids
out
here
from
all
around
the
metro
area
and
they
will
rotate
around
every
20
minutes
to
different
stations,
and
so
each
class
will
get
to
see
about
10
stations
and
won't
get
to
see.
Everything.
That's
out
here
then
come
back
on
the
public
day
for
that
on
Saturday,
but
they'll
rotate
around,
and
we
give
them
a
good
mix
of
things
of
different
aspects
of
history
that
they'll
get
to
see
like
the
fur
trade
logging.
J
A
J
You're
in
you're
out
here,
you're
seeing
people
in
authentic
costume
there
you're
seeing
the
actual
artifacts
the
historic
items
that
we've
been
used
by
all
manner
of
different
people,
fur
traders,
Native
Americans.
Look.
We
have
a
lot
of
stations
dealing
with
early
trades
and
crafts
like
woodworkers
and
blacksmiths
and
things
so
just
seeing
that
stuff
firsthand
in
use.
A
Of
kids
gathered
at
each
of
the
exhibits
and
with
more
than
50
in
total,
displaying
different
skills,
occupations,
games
and
crafts.
There
never
seemed
to
be
a
dull
moment
for
students.
Bloomington
Parks
and
Recreation
staff
hope
that
this
Living
History
festival
brings
a
sense
of
understanding
to
the
younger
generation,
well,
getting
them
out
of
the
classroom
for
a
few
hours.
If.
