From YouTube: Mall of America's 20th Anniversary
Description
A well-known national landmark celebrated its 20th birthday this month! Find out how the Mall of America came to call Bloomington home.
A
B
Energy
was
simply
amazing
from
the
stories
that
I've
heard,
especially
from
our
executive.
Vice
president
marine
bow
she's
been
with
the
company
since
1990,
and
she
just
said
some
of
the
stories
she
remembers
was
seeing
people
with
their
noses,
pressed
against
the
doors
just
anxiously
waiting
to
see
what
this
building
looked
like
from
the
inside
and
in
fact,
we
had
over
150,000
people
lined
up
waiting
for
the
opening
of
Mall
of
America.
Pretty
spectacular
I
wish
that
I
could
have
been
here.
The.
A
Site
where
the
Mall
of
America
has
stood
for
the
past
20
years
is
used
to
high
traffic
as
it
was
the
former
home
of
the
minnesota
twins
and
vikings.
The
metropolitan
stadium
opened
in
1956
later
closing
in
1981
when
the
Metrodome
opened
in
Minneapolis.
At
that
time,
losing
such
a
large
attraction
in
Bloomington
was
devastating
at.
C
That
time,
Bloomington
was
still
a
rapidly
growing
city
and
hadn't
really
established
its
reputation
in
the
metro
area
and
across
the
country,
and
so
a
big
part
of
that
reputation
was
being
the
home
of
the
Vikings
and
home
of
the
twins,
and
when
that
was
taken
away
and
the
announcement
every
home
game
here,
we
are
live
from
bloomington
minnesota.
There
was
probably
an
overreaction
to
will
never
be
on
the
national
stage
again
and
no
chance
for
the
world
stage.
Forward-Thinking.
A
C
The
audacious
part
about
their
idea
was,
you
could
put
a
significant
amount
of
entertainment
with
retail,
with
the
shopping
center.
You
can
make
that
shopping
center,
bigger
than
anything
that
it
was
seen
between
California
and
Canada,
and
then,
finally,
you
could
do
things
like
put
restaurants
in
a
shopping
center
and
again,
if
people
cast
their
mind
back
to
southdale
at
the
time
really,
all
there
was
was
hot
dog
stands
and
a
little
bit
of
fast
food
in
the
shopping
center.
C
A
C
A
Success
of
what
was
once
thought
to
be
an
over-the-top
crazy
idea,
continues
to
flourish
and
generate
new
interest
and
business
in
and
around
the
mall
of
america.
Take
this
example:
on
average,
a
twins
home
game
attracts
about
50,000
visitors.
Bloomington
now
has
a
couple
home
games
every
day
of
the
week
as
the
Mall
of
America
attracts
approximately
a
hundred
thousand
visitors
on
average
each
day,
thicker.
B
B
They
were
traveling
to
Minnesota
for
their
annual
visit
to
Mayo
Clinic
and
they
drove
by
this
space.
Here
that
what
used
to
be
Metropolitan
Stadium-
and
they
said
we
are
going
to
one
day-
buy
that
land
and
we're
going
to
make
the
biggest
shopping
mall
in
the
country,
and
they
they
did
it,
and
it
came
true,
and
now
we
just
celebrated
our
20th
anniversary
and
we've
just
been
creating.
You
know
the
place
for
fun
and
we
can't
wait
to
see
you.
A
Visitors
comes
spending
and
economic
benefits
to
the
state
of
Minnesota.
More
than
40
million
people
bring
their
business
to
the
mall
each
year.
That's
more
than
the
combined
populations
of
North
Dakota,
South,
Dakota,
Iowa,
Nebraska
and
Canada,
not
to
mention
the
thousands
employed
in
various
roles
in
and
around
the
mall
before.
B
The
mall
open,
we
employed
7,000
workers,
construction
workers
to
get
this
good
to
get
them
all
open,
so
I
mean
put
that
number
into
perspective
and
then
put
this
number
to
perspective
when
the
mall
opens,
we
created
13,000,
more
jobs
for
the
state
of
Minnesota.
It
takes
a
lot
more
to
put
this.
To
get
this
mall
running
I
mean
we
have
right:
operators,
gas,
service
employees.
We
have
people
that
actually
sort
through
our
recyclables
and
so
I
mean
overall
mall
of
america
is
a
huge
boost
to
the
Minnesota
economy.
A
C
First
part
that
everybody
knows
about
this:
the
IKEA
store.
The
second
part
is
the
radisson
blu
hotel,
500
room
hotel.
What's
really
significant
about
it
is
its
upper
upscale
hotel,
which
we've
got
nowhere
else
in
the
city
and
connected
by
a
skyway
right
to
the
mall
of
america,
and
then
the
phase
that
Ryan
is
working
on
now
we'll
have
additional
retail.
It
will
have
a
medical
office
building
that
Mayo
is
mentioned
as
one
of
the
potential
occupants
and
then
it
will
have
an
additional
hotel,
perhaps
about
300
rooms,
again
upper
upscale
rooms.
