A
Hello
bloomington,
I'm
mayor
tim
bussey,
and
this
is
the
council
minute
for
the
week
of
may
9th
this
week.
I
want
to
highlight
two
city
of
bloomington
proclamations
that
I
read
at
our
meeting
on
monday
night,
a
proclamation
for
respect
for
law
week
and
a
second
proclamation
for
national
police
week
and
police
officers
memorial
day
may
15
through
the
21st
is
respect
for
law
week.
It's
an
annual
event
that
acknowledges
that
public
awareness
and
determination
to
maintain
the
faith
and
the
preservation
of
law
and
order
is
everyone's
responsibility.
A
One
community
group
that
stands
out
in
that
regard
is
the
bloomington
optimist,
club
optimist,
clubs
and
their
members
have
a
long
history
of
sponsoring
and
supporting
programs
aimed
at
combating
crime
and
fostering
respect
for
law,
and
they
go
on
throughout
the
year
each
year.
During
respect
for
law
week.
The
bloomington
optimists
recognize
a
member
of
the
bloomington
police
department
as
their
respect
for
law
officer
of
the
year.
A
The
second
proclamation
I
want
to
highlight
is
for
national
police
week
and
peace
officers.
Memorial
day
in
1962,
president
kennedy
proclaimed
may
15th
as
national
peace
officers
memorial
day
and
the
calendar
week
in
which
may
15th
falls
as
national
police
week
that
same
year,
congress
passed
a
joint
resolution
in
support
to
make
everything
official,
so
national
police
week
this
year
is
officially
may
15th
through
the
21st
national
police
week
pays
special
recognition
to
those
law
enforcement
officers
who
have
lost
their
lives
in
the
line
of
duty
for
the
safety
and
the
protection
of
others.
A
A
In
addition,
the
law
enforcement
memorial
flag
will
be
flown
at
civic
plaza
during
national
police
week,
beginning
on
may
15th.
The
flag
will
fly
at
half
staff
on
may
15
and
then
at
full
staff.
For
the
remainder
of
the
time
and
in
recognition
of
the
week,
the
bloomington
police
department
will
conduct
a
flag
ceremony
on
monday
march.
16Th
at
8
am
as
part
of
that
ceremony.
There
will
be
a
playing
of
the
bugle
and
a
rifle
firing.
A
Three
volleys
and,
as
you've
heard
me,
talk
about
in
recent
weeks
be
sure
to
join
us
on
saturday
may
21st
at
the
bloomington
police
department,
open
house.
The
event
will
take
place
here
at
civic
plaza
and
will
include
tours
of
the
police
department
displays
of
police
equipment,
including
the
swat
team
and
the
bomb
squad
and
the
k-9
unit.
It
will
also
be
a
great
opportunity
to
meet
our
new
police
chief
booker
t
hodges.
