From YouTube: Artist Interview: Robert Sher-Mechherndl
Description
Robert is developing a choreographed performance in response to the pandemic titled SIX FEET APART for residents of Holiday Park to view from their balconies or terraces. The performance will rove the sidewalk improvising the choreography in response to the energy of the viewers along the way. Creative Neighborhoods: COVID-19 Work Projects was launched by the Office of Arts + Culture and Create Boulder: https://boulderarts.org/public-art/creative-neighborhoods/covid-19-work-projects/
B
All
right,
so
my
name
is
robert
mchandle
and
my
creative
career.
Okay,
it
was
so
I
started
as
a
a
ballet
dancer
and
then
it's
a
as
a
principal
ballet
dancer
in
mainly
european
companies
like
dutch
national
ballet
bavarian
state
ballet.
So
I
I
danced
all
the
the
classics,
all
the
main
principal
parts
and
also
at
the
same
time
worked
with
a
lot
of
choreographers
who
created
pieces
on
me
and
so
on,
and
so
that's
sort
of
my
my
career
beginning.
B
So
I
started
got
when
I
was
like
eight
years
old
with
14
I
had
my
first
contract
and
then
from
there
on
it,
went
on
and
on
and
on
and
then
close
to
my
end
of
my
ballet
career.
So
as
a
as
a
principal
dancer,
I
started
already
choreographing
in
in
different
workshops
in
bavarian
state
ballet
dutch
nationals
capino
ballet.
So
that's
how
sort
of
I
I
slowly
touched
sort
of
put
my
my
my
wings
out
and
checked
it
out.
B
What's
what's
going
on
and
since
yeah
since
I
moved
here.
B
So
that's
quite
a
while
ago
to
the
states,
probably
over
20
years
yeah,
we
have
lemons
manchester
contemporary
ballet
and
in
lemons
function.
Contemporary
bali,
I'm
a
I'm,
the
choreographer
and
artistic
director
and
yeah
so
we'll
be
creating
what
we
usually
do,
we're
creating
pc
pieces
here
and
then
also
I
travel
so
the
last
three
years.
I
traveled
a
lot
back
to
europe.
B
Doing
every
year
you
know
three
four
projects
with
our
company
and
yeah,
so
that's
sort
of
in
a
nutshell.
What
what
I
do,
what
we
are
doing
so
yeah.
B
B
Quite
a
lot
I
mean
you
know
it's
obviously
it's
we
are
all
affected,
so
it
sounds
always
weird
when
you
when
you,
when
you
talk
just
for
from
for
yourself,
you
know,
but
we
are
affected
like
every
other
arts
organization
or
single
artist.
You
know
we
had
already.
We
had,
for
instance,
the
2020
2021
was
all
planned
and
there
was
a
lot
happening
in
there
were
three
months
in
germany,
dusseldorf
and
essen.
Then
there
was
a
couple
of
months
in
vienna,
austria
in
a
choreographic
institute.
B
So
so
there
were
really
very
exciting
plans
and
they
all
disappeared
in
one
go,
but
you
know
they
not
really
disappeared.
It's
luckily
I
mean
nobody
knows
when,
but
they
all
shifted.
You
know,
so
I'm
still
in
contact
with
the
with
the
people.
I
work
in
germany.
You
know
obviously
with
the
people
who
work
in
vienna.
B
So
it
starts.
Everything
is
postponed,
and
here
you
know
our
project's
here.
That's
all
we
had
the
project
also
with
the
with
the
boulder
symphony,
and
you
know,
that's
gone
and
other
things.
So
they
are
really.
Everything
is
postponed.
But
as
we
know,
like
everybody
else,
we
don't
know
when
we
when
it
goes
on,
you
know
and
all
the
my
workshops
and
teaching
it's
all
disappeared
and
I
do
a
lot
on
zoom.
Obviously
you
know
and
we
so
we
were
actually
we
recouped
very
quickly
to
teach
on
zoom.
B
You
know
so
we
were
very
fast.
You
know
we
offered,
we
are
still
offering
everyday
classes
and
then
we
always
do
workshops
on
zoom.
You
know
like
three-hour
workshops
so
and
then
we
also
do
showings
from
pieces.
I
did
in
europe.
B
We
do
like
a
sort
of
a
premiere
on
on
youtube.
So
there's
one
actually
coming
up
in
this
coming
sunday.
We
show
a
piece
what
I
did
in
london
last
year,
so
so
that's
exciting,
but
yeah,
but
we
are
really
affected.
I
mean
it's,
it's
it's
sort
of
yeah
everything
disappeared.
I
mean
that's
like
everybody
else.
You
know,
and
obviously
we
are
you
know
in
dance.
You
have
to
be
in
a
studio
and
work
with
people
close
together
and
that's
gone.
You
know.
So,
thank
god
for
zoom.
B
You
know,
that's
works.
You
know,
works
actually
really
good.
You
know.
Actually,
really
good,
I
have
to
say
you
know,
and
the
one
good
thing
is
assume
my
people
take
class
now
from
from
you
know,
from
other
states,
or
even
I
have
some
from
london
taking
my
class,
you
know
even
with
the
time
shift,
so
that's
sort
of
like.
Oh,
you
know,
meeting
old
friends
again
and
that's
is
now
there
and
hopefully
it
stays.
You
know
so
yeah.
A
B
Yeah
so
yeah,
so
we
won
this
ground,
but
it's
very
exciting.
So
we
are
so.
The
plan
is
so
we're
living
in
north
boulder
in
the
holiday
neighborhood
and
there's
a
a
a
park.
So
we
live.
We
live
right
by
the
park
so
and
there's
the
houses
that
are
sort
of
in
a
in.
A
B
Circle
and
our
plan
is
to
so
we
keep
the
distance,
and
so
obviously
people
can
also
come
from
from
the
neighborhoods
behind
you
know,
from
the
houses
and
watch
you
know,
like
I
said,
there's
a
large
park
grass
where
they
can
there's
enough
space
for
people
to
spray
it
out.
B
So
this
you
know,
and
so
we
we're
doing
sort
of
the
idea
is
you
know
it
will
obviously
change,
but
it's
just
the
beginning
ideas
that
we
do
it
on
the
on
the
sort
of
on
the
edge
of
the
park,
and
so
people
can
even
watch
from
the
porches.
You
know
from
the
houses
or
from
the
windows
or
from
the
balconies.
You
know
and
it
slowly
travels
sort
of
the
curve
around
the
park
you
know,
and
so
the
project
is
is
so
we
what
we're
doing?
B
Also
we
have
handheld
lights.
You
know,
battery
powered,
you
know
strong
ones
and
also
the
music
is
everything
is
portable.
So
what
what
travels
with
you
know-
and
we
have
so
we
have
also
then,
at
the
same
time
we
have
a
filmmaker
filming
it
the
whole
situation,
and
then
I
have
a
I
use
it.
A
dancer
from
cleopatra
robinson,
because
I
started
also
that
but
also
fell
apart.
B
I
started
choreographing
a
piece
for
cleo
and
two
days
before
everything
got
shut
down,
so
we
we
had
the
two
days
of
rehearsal
and
and
then
so
we
had
to
stop
so
I
I
use-
and
I
started
with
two
two
female
dancers
and
one
of
the
female
dancers
just
mean
I
will
so
she
will
come
out
on
on
4th
of
july.
B
B
To
incorporate
the
the
terrible
pandemic,
of
course,
and
that's
the
you
know,
nobody
knows
where
it
will
go
when
it
will
stop,
and
you
know,
but
then
also
we
have
now
the
terrible
riots
you
know
and-
and
I
absolutely
believe
black
lives
do
matter
a
lot
and
the
police
brutality.
What
I
see
and
what
I
experienced,
no,
not
myself
experience
what
I
see
and
on
on
news
and
all
and
other
outlets.
B
But
you
know
I'm
not
saying
that
all
police
officers
are
like
that,
but
you
know
there's
we
see
it,
we
saw
it
ourselves,
you
know
on
the,
and
so
I
wanted
to
incorporate
and
I
work
already
with
cleo
since
over
20
years,
we're
working
together.
You
know
I
work
with
the
company
and
this,
so
we
are
very
good
friends,
you
know,
and-
and
so
I
thought
like,
I
wanted
to
bring
them
in.
B
So
that's
why
I
choose
a
dancer
who
I
worked
already
with
you
know
and
and
sort
of
to
to
also
raise
their
voice
in
in.
In
that
way
too,
you
know
because
it
would
be
silly
just
doing
and
then
forgetting
the
other,
because
everything
you
know
right
now
everything
changes
the
hour
by
the
day.
You
know,
as
you
know,
you
know,
and
so
that
was
the
reason
why
I
wanted
to
have
somebody
else
with
me.
B
You
know
and
we're
gonna
be
gonna,
be,
like
I
think,
like
four
people,
but
in
distance,
so
there
will
be
two
dancers
and
jennifer
will
be
in
charge
of
of
light
sound,
but
we
also
the
dancers
will
be
also
in
charge
of
lighting
and
then
the
the
filmmaker
the
camera
you
know
so,
and
so
we
all
will
travel
in
in
our
six
feet
apart
this.
So
so
that's
sort
of
roughly
the
idea
of
the
project
so.
A
A
8
30.,
okay,
great
well,
keep
that
in
mind,
and
so
is
there
anything
else.
You'd
like
to
share
about
your
experience
of
the
project.
B
You
know,
like
I
said
you
know,
I'm
just
starting
just
putting
starting
to
put
the
music
together,
because
the
the
ideas
also
I
work
a
lot
with
a
lot
mainly
only
like
with
electronic
music.
You
know
and
certain
composers
who
compose
electronic
music
very
minimal
music.
Sometimes
so
I
thought
like
for
outside
for
this
project,
because
it's
it's
sort
of
people's
project,
I
will
choose
different
music,
I
will
choose.
B
I
think
I
will
choose
music,
but
people
maybe
recognize
if
it's
not
songs
or
if
it's
a
a
certain
group
they
recognize.
You
know,
I
think,
that's
sort
of
I
I
believe
it's
sort
of
it
gives
it
a
better
understanding,
because
it's
it's
for
the
people
and
for
sort
of
it.
It
should
be
a
positive
outlook.
You
know,
that's
that's
the
idea
of
the
project.
B
It
should
be
a
positive
that
everything
is
not
doom
and
gloom,
even
if
it
feels
it
is
you
know,
but
there
is
always
you
know
we
are
humans.
We
always
find
a
way
to
come
back
and
come
back
better.
You
know
oops
and
that's
what
the
project
should
be.
So
that's
very
important
that
it's
a
very
positive
experience
for
all
of
us.
You
know
for
the
viewer
and
also
for
the
people
who
are
involved.
