From YouTube: Inside Boulder News - 2014 Year in Review
Description
From the first recreational marijuana shop to Ironman Boulder and the opening of the North Boulder Public Library, 2014 has been a year full of firsts for the City of Boulder. Working together, the community continued recovery efforts from the 2013 flood, and affordable housing and design excellence sparked conversations that will undoubtedly continue in 2015. We hope this look back at 2014 will remind you of where we’ve been as a community as we look forward to the year ahead.

Welcome
to

I'm
Ashley
pearl
this
week
we're
taking
a
look
back
at
some
of
the
most
exciting
and
engaging
stories.
We've
told
on
inside
Boulder
news
in
2014
from
the
first
recreational
marijuana
shop
to
ironman

and
the
opening

2014
has
been
a
year
full
of
first
for
the
city
of
Boulder,
working
together,
the
community
continued
recovery
efforts
from
the
2013
flood
and
affordable
housing
and
Design
Excellence
sparked
conversations
that
will
undoubtedly
continue
in
2015.
A
We
hope
this
look
back
at
2014
will
remind
you
of
where
we've
been
as
a
community
as
we
look
forward
to
the
year
ahead.
The

the

Experience
with
the
city
was
very
professional.
We
transferred
both
of
our
licenses
for
this
store
and
agro
facility.
That's
attached
to
it
in
about
a
45
minute
meeting
at
the
licensing
clerk's
office,
and
it
was
contingent
upon
the
state
issuing
the
license.
So
the
licenses
became
effective
today
that
David
the
state
issued
are
safe.

City
of
Boulder
will
continue
to
implement
recreational

Existing
medical

businesses
who
also
like
to
sell
recreational
marijuana
and
expand
their
business,
can
apply
for
a

through
march.
First

Have
a
monitor

who
is
taking
survey,
information
and
also
monitoring
the
amount,
the
quantity
of
material
that's
been
removed
from
the
site
so
that
we
could
get
hopefully
reimbursed
by
FEMA.
So
each
truckload
is
being
monitored,
they're
going
to
have
a
tower
here
and
they'll,
look
into
the
truck
and
make
sure
it's
full
and
then
every

that's
taken
out.

A
D
You're
probably
aware
a
lot
of
these
drainage
ways
go
along.
Bike
paths
smoke
these
paths,
so
people
need
to
just
know
that
they
might
be
asked
to
stop
when
trucks
are
crossing
the
path
there.
The
contractor
is
required
to
have
traffic
control
on
the
roads,
as
well
as
the
bike
paths,
but
you
know
the
public
should
just
be
aware
that
these
projects
are
happening.
Initial.

Last
weekend,
the
north
boulder
community
celebrated
the
opening
of
a
new
corner
library
with
an
official
ribbon-cutting
ceremony
and
mini
street
fair.
A
E
Been
so
long
in
coming
to
provide
services
for
North
Boulder,
that
is
to
such
an
exciting
day,
and
it's
taken
a
community
coming
together
and
helping
the
library
not
only
get
the
space
and
have
the
community
engaged,
but
in
helping
us
decide
what
services
to
provide
here
and
it's
such
a
small
space
that
it's
going
to
be
an
ongoing
relationship
of
having
the
community
and
the
local
businesses
and
just
seeing
what
we
can
do
in
this
little
corner
library.
But
it's
just
a
wonderful
step
in
the
process
and
we're
so
excited
to
open
it.
Today.
G
You
know
the
North
Boulder
branch
library
was
in
the
master
plan
since
the
mid
80s.
So
it's
been
a
concept
for
a
long
time
and
now
it's
a
reality,
but
it
was
really
put
into
place
in
1995
as
part
of
the
North
Boulder
sub-community
plan.
So
it's
only
been
19
years.
Sometimes
you
just
have
to
stay
focused
and
it
takes
a
little
bit
longer
to
get
some
things,
but
it's
definitely
worth
the
wait.
Information.

floodwaters
last
year
caused
a
lot
of
damage
around
the
city,
but
signs
of
the
devastation
are
hard
to
find
at
the
13th
street
boulder
farmers
market,
local
farmer
and
chef
Eric's

focused
on
his
resilient

flavorful

This.
H
Is
everything
that
made
it
through
the
winter?
So
this
is
all
things
that
you
saw
in
all
that
survived
the
flood
and
then
survived
the
cold
and
survive
the
snow,
and
then
it's
all
because
all
the
survivors,
except
for
this
spinach,
we
lost
all
the
spinach
during
the
flood
about
five
days
after
the
floods
and
we
lost
all
of
our
spinach
I
had
a
fedex
order
of
seeds
that
arrived
and
we
got
on
the
tractor.
We
tilled
the
soil
again
really
quickly
and
we
got
the
seeds
as
soon
as
we
possibly
could.
A
To
schoo
can,
in
a
regular
year,
market
farms
put
out
eighty
percent
of
their
expenses
before
they
really
start
harvesting.
Anything,
it's
not
until
the
very
end
of
the
farmers
market
in
the
fall
that
farms
may
make
a
profit
or
break
even
this
year.
In
addition
to
all
of
the
normal
costs
like
seeds,
equipment
and
supplies,
the
farmers
have
the
extra
burden
of
repairing
damage
done
by
the
flood.
So
the
best
way
you
can
support
local
farms
is
by
dusting
off
your
cookbook
and
finding.

A
I
With
my
power
usage,
I'm
sort
of
obsessed
with
getting
my
bills
down
what
I
can
change,
how
to
monitor
it,
I
work
at
home,
and
so
it's
nice
to
know
during
the
day
what
you're,
using
what
you're,
not
using
what
speaking
things
like
that
I
think.
Knowing
if
I
unplug
something
you
know
how
much
you
know,
what
is
really
using
the
juice
in
the
house,
I
think
more
than
anything,
that's
probably
what
I'm
going
to
enjoy
I,
don't
know
what
it
all
offers
me
at
this
point.
So
that's
my
best
answer.
A
The
Newlands
and
kings
ridge
noble
park
neighborhoods
were
chosen
for
the
project
because
of
their
diverse
locations,
housing
types,
housing,
ages,
family
sizes
and
income
levels.
While
the

get
aggregate

The

by
the
Pecan

Austin

a
new
temporary
public
art
project
came
to
life
this
week
at
1301,
Arapaho
Avenue,
the
mural
titled
bot
stories
boulder
by
artist
Gary
Hirsch,
was
inspired
by
tiny
robots.
Hirsch
has
been
making
for
the
past
four
years.
This.

One
is
a
joy
bot
programmed
to
give
you
joy.
This
one
is
bot
number
25
thousand
nine
hundred
and
twenty
eight,
so
I've
made
a
lot
of
them
sort
of
obsessed
with
making
them
and
the
way
they
work
is
it's
just
a
domino
really
just
painted
on
Domino,
but
it's
designed
to
sit
and
watch
you
for
a
while
and
then
it'll
give
you
outrageous.
Compliments
when
you
do
great
things
you
know
like
that
was
really
smart
thing.
You
said
and
you're
wearing
really
nice
pants
or
whatever
it'll
just
say
nice
things
to
you
after.
A
J
An
interactive
mural.
The
idea
is
that,
after
these
things
go
up,
each
robot
is
going
to
have
a
different
question
on
it.
What
brings
you
joy?
What
do
you
need
help
with?
What's
your
dream?
Who
do
you,
love
and
I'm,
really
really
curious
to
make
arts
that
sort
of
continues
after
it's
made,
where
audiences
kind
of
keep
the
story
going?
A
Mural

be
finished

this

in

for
us
to
have
flexibility
to
move

around.
In
case,
we
need
to
configure
the

the
computers
in
any
way
new
carpeting
was
placed.
We
have
all
new
furniture
in
this

Our
non

collection
was
rearranged
to
flow,
more
naturally
from
high
to
low

and
we
opened
up
the

So
you
have
a
greater
view
of
the
outdoors,
a
better
connection
with
the

K
F
Really
excited
about
the
fact
that
where
we
have
all
our
computers
in
one
space
now
so
it's
much
easier
for
people
to
find
them
and
to
understand
what
to
do
so.
The
print
release
and
copier
and
the
reservation
station
are
all
together
and
they're
located
near
a
service
point.
So
people
can
get
help
if
they
need
it.
A
A
L
Gets
exciting
for
some
years
now,
we've
had
a
capital
campaign
project
on
the
books,
because
this
dairy
center
needs
a
lot
of
renovations,
and
now
it's
going
to
become
a
reality,
so
we
can
improve
our
performance
spaces
soundproof,
our
theaters
upgrade
our
galleries.
Upgrade
our
technology
improve
our
meeting
spaces,
it's
pretty
exciting
for
Boulder,
because
as
boulders
truly
only
multi-disciplinary
arts
center,
we
can
finally
be
competitive
with
other
art
centers
in
other
communities
and
give
Boulder
a
facility
can
truly
be
proud
of
ballot.
A
N
We're
really
appreciative
of
the
overwhelming
support
this
community
showed
to
initiative
to
see.
We
had
really
sought
to
exempt
ourselves
from
state
laws
that
restrict
our
ability
to
have
a
broad
vision
of
what
we
want
to
do
in
Boulder,
and
this
really
opens
the
door
to
the
full
array
of
different
options
he
might
have
in
investing
in
a
broadband
community
and
using
our
great
resources
that
the
public
owns
in
terms
of
the
telecommunications
infrastructure
that
we
have.
N
It
also
opens
the
opportunity
for
us
to
start
a
dialogue
with
our
council
and
community
on
the
vision
and
the
plan
and
even
provides
us
the
ability
to
look
more
short-term
at
the
possibility
of,
for
example,
providing
Wi-Fi
services
that
better
enhance
our
public
spaces.
Much
as
we
do
in
the
library
for.

what

in

Last
September's
Boulder
was
devastated
to
discover
the
emerald
ash
borer
within
city
limits.
Emerald
ash
borer
is
a
highly
destructive
invasive
pest
responsible
for
the
death
of
millions
of
ash
trees
across
the
United
States.
Its.
Q
Larval
stage
actually
tunnels
underneath
the
bark
and
disrupts
the
vascular
system
and
eventually
kills
the
tree.
So,
unfortunately,
we
know
that
the
ash
trees
that
we
have
here,
the
green
ash
and
the
white
ash
will
eventually
all
be
killed
by
the
emerald
ash
borer
if
they're
not
treated
with
pesticides,
but.
R
Q
Were
thrilled
thrilled
at
the
opportunity?
Yes
to
release
these
because
in
other
locations
have
been
released
much
later
in
the
emerald
ash,
borer
sort
of
cycle
through
the
city,
and
here
we
have
the
opportunity
to
release
them
very
early
when
EAB
populations
are
still
relatively
low,
so
it
gives
the
wasps
a
longer
period
of
time
to
really
get
established
and-
and
that's
we're
hoping
we'll
have
a
bigger
impact
on.
You
know
down
the
road
that
possibly
you
know.
R
Right
now,
the
biggest
thing
we
want
is
to
make
sure
that
they
establish.
So
what
we'll
do
is
we'll
release
them
and
them
will
in
the
next
coming
years.
We
will
monitor
and
see
if
we
can
find
the
wasps
around
we'll
put
out
traps,
we
might
take
a
branch
sample
and
peel
it
and
see
if
we
can
find
the
wasps
and
so
for
us
right
now.
R
Measurement
of
success
is
really
does
it
over
winter,
doesn't
survive
here
and
then
long-term
biological
control
is
something
that
really
takes
a
lot
of
patience
because
you're
trying
to
get
some
sort
of
ecological
balance
between
the
prey,
which
is
the
emerald
ash
borer,
which
is
eating
ash
trees
and
it's
parasitoid
which
is
feeding
on
it,
and
so
you
kind
of
want
to
get
that
balance
and
that
might
take
5-10
years.
It
could
take
a
long
time,
and
so
hopefully,
in
the
long
run,
you
get
some
sort
of
control
out
of
the
wasps.

S
Affordable
housing
for
seniors
has
been
very
difficult
to
get
developed
in
this
community
and
in
fact
this
is
one
of
the
first,
what
the
second
one
since
1982
of
permanently
affordable
housing
in
our
market
area,
there's
about
six
hundred
affordable
units
for
seniors
only
about
12
those
or
two
bedroom
units,
and
this
creates
an
incredible
opportunity
for
people.
As
we
all
know,
the
silver
tsunami
is
coming.
There's
lots
of
demand
for
senior
housing.
T
Portable
housing
is
really
critical
to
the
city
of
Boulder.
We
have
it's
a
very
expensive
place
to
live,
obviously,
and
we're
losing
university
that
we
once
had
in
this
town
and
so
using
a
portable
housing
at
all
income
levels.
We
can.
We
can
help
folks
out
and
preserve
what
Boulder
used
to
be
in
preserve
a
community.
That's
not
just
homogenous,
but
that
is
made
up
of
all
types
of
is
inclusive.
U
Downtown
it
was
great
because
they
don't
just
come
in
the
day
of
the
race.
They
come
in
three
four
or
five
days
before
the
race
and
they're
here
all
week.
They
bring
their
families
their
spouses,
their
kids
and
they're
here
and
they're
spending
money
in
our
restaurants
and
our
retail
stores,
I
heard
very,
very
positive
reviews
from
most
of
our
downtown
businesses
and
even
got
positive
reviews
from
restaurants
as
far
away
as
table
mesa
and
north
broadway.
U
V
Think
it
was
a
great
representation
of
older
I.
Think
Boulder
is
a
very
athletic
ound
and
we
also
know
that
athletes
have
families
and
children,
and
so
you
got
to
see
everyone,
including
you
know,
grandmother's
and
grandfathers
and
incipient,
come
in
to
actually
be
part
of
that
experience
with
the
athlete
and
I
think
it
really
showed
off
the
fact
that
Boulder,
it
really
represents
a
very
wholesome
organic
community
that
really
enjoys
having
fun
together,
I'm
very
proud
of
what
we've
actually
accomplished.
There's
a
there's.
