Description
This week on Inside Boulder News: City works to reduce risks from West Nile; council to consider Energy Future ballot measures; and raptor closures result in successful breeding efforts.
A
Welcome
to
inside
Boulder
news,
I'm
Natalie
Wood
mosquito
activity
is
on
the
rise
due
to
hot
weather
and
recent
precipitation.
Several
samples
in
both
the
city
and
Boulder
County
have
tested
positive
for
West
Nile.
The
city's
mosquito
control
program
is
taking
action
to
decrease
the
risk
of
people
contracting
the
virus.
It's.
A
A
C
A
B
Are
doing
some
things
habitat
wise
to
improve
both
ecological
health
of
the
habitat
but
make
them
less
likely
to
harbor
mosquitoes?
Some
of
our
our
restoration
work
in
some
areas
is
proving
to
be
really
effective
at
reducing
mosquitoes
and
we're
cooperating
and
working
really
closely
with
the
city's
IPM
coordinator.
To
do
this
kind
of
monitoring
work
that
keeps
us
informed
about
how
how
well
the
mosquitoes
are
doing
and
what
we
can
do
to
prevent
mosquito
populations
from
increasing
city.
A
D
Way
that
you
can
prevent
yourself
in
getting
West
Nile
virus
is
to
avoid
mosquito
bites.
It's
really
important
that
people
do
their
part
to
protect
the
community.
We
feel
like
we're
doing
a
really
efficient
job
of
keeping
them
down
on
our
public
properties.
What
we,
what
we
need
to
happen
for
to
protect
all
of
us
is
for
people
to
inspect
their
properties
and
look
for
anything
that
can
hold
water
there.
A
Are
several
things
you
can
do
to
protect
yourself
from
mosquitoes?
You
can
use
a
deep
based
or
all
natural
bug
spray,
and
if
you
have
standing
water
on
your
property,
you
can
use
a
product
like
this.
That
kills
mosquitoes
at
the
source
also
check
your
screens
for
holes
or
tears
where
bugs
might
be
able
to
get
through.
As
far
as
leaving
your
home
to
enjoy
boulders
open
space
crews
say
it's
okay.
As
long
as
you
take
precautions,
we.
B
Think
it's
perfectly
okay
to
go
out.
You
may
choose
a
location
that
is
not
as
buggy
locations
near
water
and
and
near
lush.
Green
vegetation
are
the
places
where
mosquitoes
are
most
likely
to
be,
so
you
might
want
to
choose
a
trail
or
a
hike
that
takes
you
away
from
mosquito
prone
habitats
and
also
movement
keeping
moving
rather
than
sitting
stationary
doesn't
allow
the
mosquitoes
mosquitoes
to
settle
and
on
you
and
bite
you
for.
A
More
on
how
to
protect
yourself
against
the
virus
visit
boulder,
colorado,
gov,
/
IPM,
a
citizen
petition
that
would
require
voters
to
approve
any
debt
related
to
a
local
electric
utility
moved
closer
to
the
ballot.
This
week
the
city
clerk
confirmed
earlier
today
that
supporters
obtained
enough
signatures
to
move
forward
by
law.
Council
must
assign
a
title
to
the
ballot
item
at
its
next
meeting,
which
is
july.
Twenty
third,
but
elected
officials
are
not
expected
to
finalize
this
item
until
August
twentieth.
We.
E
Look
at
whether
or
not
they
are
registered
at
a
different
address.
If
we
can't
read
it
if
they're
registered
out
of
the
district,
that
happens
a
lot
in
boulder
and
out
of
the
petitions
once
they
hit
a
margin
of
500
signatures
above
the
required
amount,
I
actually
instructed
that
it
stops.
So
we
have
now
reached
a
threshold
where
we
are
ready
to
certify
our
job
is
to
provide
opportunity
for
observing
the
process
and
having
access
to
information,
and
then
it's
all
up
to
the
community
city.
A
Staff
has
prepared
an
alternative
ballot
measure
for
councils.
Consideration
council
will
discuss
the
proposal
for
the
first
time
at
a
special
meeting.
July
24th,
if
approved
both
measures
would
be
presented
to
voters
in
November.
Earlier
this
year,
we've
been
taking
a
closer
look
at
the
temporary
Raptor
closures
placed
by
OS
MP.
The
goal
of
the
annual
restrictions
is
to
study,
protect
and
grow
birds
of
prey
populations.
Here
in
Boulder,
the
program
has
been
a
big
success
in
building
healthy,
Raptor
families
and
community
relationships.
A
F
Is
really
a
neat
thing
to
be
up
in
this
vertical
environment
and
to
see
these
birds
fly
by?
You
may
be,
may
be
climbing
next
to
a
crag?
That's
closed
you're
in
an
open
area,
and
you
can
really
get
a
bird's-eye
view
of
these
incredible
raptors.
Of
course,
I
spend
a
lot
of
time
using
binoculars
and
spotting
scopes,
but
it
kind
of
doesn't
compare
to
sharing
their
environment
so.
G
F
G
F
Have
a
lot
of
average
to
probably
slightly
above
average
productivity
at
our
nest
sites
this
year
with
Prairie
Falcons
here
only
having
two
potential
Fletch's
is
a
little
bit
off
their
mark,
but
two
is
still
great
and
still
within
the
normal
range,
very
typical
behavior
for
this
stage
in
their
development,
they're,
probably
about
30
to
33
days
old,
they're,
fully
feathered.
What
we
see
at
this
stage
is
they'll
flap,
their
wings
very
rapidly.
Sometimes,
they'll
leave
the
nest
ledge.
F
G
A
Most
of
the
temporary
closures
have
been
lifted
for
this
season.
There
are
still
a
few
restrictions
in
place
to
look
up
your
favorite
trail
