Description
Inside Boulder News celebrates OSMP's work to provide access to people with disabilities; updates raptor closures and Capital Improvement Program plans; and details back-to-school walkabout plans.
A
Well,
there's
top
stories
this
week.
Open
space
and
mountain
parks
is
recognized
for
opportunities
it
gives
to
disabled
visitors.
Raptor
closures
make
a
positive
difference
and
the
city
gears
up
for
the
return
of
Cu
students,
hi
I'm,
Natalie,
Wood,
open
space
is
a
part
of
Boulder.
That's
so
valuable
the
city
just
wouldn't
be
the
same.
Without
it,
trails
are
a
place
to
unwind
and
enjoy
the
beauty
of
nature
in
the
city
of
Boulder,
open
space
and
mountain
parks
department
recently
received
an
award
for
making
sure
people
with
disabilities
have
the
opportunity
to
enjoy
them.
A
I
met
with
Oh
SMP
outreach
coordinator,
Topher
downham
earlier
this
week
to
talk
about
the
work
the
city
does
to
make
Boulder
trails
accessible,
majestic
mountains,
beautiful
scenery
and
peaceful
trails,
all
natural
characteristics
of
Boulder
that
residents
and
visitors,
love,
open
space
and
mountain
parks
wants
to
make
sure
everyone
has
the
chance
to
experience
it.
It's.
B
A
B
Feel
really
honored
I
feel
really
honored.
It's
amazing
dude.
This
is
a
great
organization.
The
CCDC
is,
and
they
are
very
serious
about
getting
disabilities
getting
people
with
disabilities
included
in
just
the
entire
community,
so
they
they
like
that,
what
we're
doing-
and
so
it
feels
really
great
there.
A
B
Requirements
for
accessible
trails
are
that
the
slope
isn't
too
much
the
terrain
type
isn't
to
like,
so
you
have
like
really
pack
down
crusher
pine
or
really
packed
down
road
base.
Cross
slope
is
really
important.
So
if
you
got
a
side
slope,
that's
like
nine
percent,
really
tough
in
a
wheelchair,
because
you'll
be
pulled
off
the
clip.
That's
right!
Next
to
you,
the
15
trails
that
we
have.
We
have
some
that
are
in
forest,
some
that
are
out
in
the
pills
out
in
the
grasslands,
some
that
are
running
down
like
stream
corridors
just
everywhere.
The.
A
Baba
link
trail
is
one
of
tophers
favorites.
He
says
people
with
disabilities
often
have
a
hard
time
with
circulation,
and
this
south
boulder
creek
trail
offers
plenty
of
shade.
Educational
hikes
are
offered
on
accessible
trails
like
Bob
link
for
people
with
disabilities,
and
they
are
often
led
by
a
person
with
a
disability.
Oh
SMP
also
offers
educational
hikes
and
Spanish
and
sensory
hikes
for
people
with
low
vision.
Topher
says
he
personally
knows
the
importance
of
making
these
trails
available
to
everyone.
16.
B
A
Can
certainly
get
lost
in
nature
at
any
of
boulders,
15,
accessible
trails.
That's
why
the
CDC
has
chosen
to
honor
Oh
SMP
for
their
enriching
efforts.
Topher
is
making
a
series
of
three
minute
videos
on
the
accessible
trails,
so
people
can
see
what
they're
like
before,
checking
it
out
themselves.
Those
videos
will
be
coming
soon:
20
SMP
org
for
a
list
of
all
boulders,
accessible
trails,
visit,
Oh,
SNP's
website
and
click
on
the
visitors
with
disabilities
link,
while
you're
out
on
the
trails
you
may
want
to
keep
your
eyes
peeled
for
Raptors
every
year.
A
Certain
no
SMP
areas
are
closed
in
order
to
protect
nesting
and
roosting
raptors,
and
while
those
closures
have
been
lifted
in
some
park
areas,
they
have
been
expanded.
In
others,
Oh
SMP
staff
observed
Falcon
behavior,
indicating
that
humans
were
causing
disturbance
to
nesting
peregrine
falcons
in
back
porch.
Human
disturbance
can
cause
nested
band.
A
So
the
current
seasonal
closure
of
back
porch
has
grown
to
include
the
climbing
formation
known
as
the
box
peregrine
falcons
were
once
listed
as
endangered
and
are
currently
considered
a
species
of
special
concern
in
Colorado,
o
SMP
has
lifted
several
raptor
closures
because
of
an
absence
of
Raptor
activity.
In
particular
areas,
closures
no
longer
exist
at
the
Sphinx
Gregory
Canyon
amphitheatre
and
mount
sanitas
more
seasonal
closures
may
be
lifted
in
the
near
future.
Depending
on
Raptor
activity.
A
You
can
check
out
the
city's
website
for
more
information
city
council
on
tuesday
night
considered
more
than
170
million
dollars
in
infrastructure.
Repairs
needed
through
2017
on
the
slate
for
next
year
is
twenty
three
point:
eight
million
dollars
to
repair
the
city's
existing
infrastructure
city
staff,
told
council
during
a
study
session
that
the
capital
improvement
program
is
a
multi-year
program
that
repairs
and
maintains
the
city's
physical
assets.
A
Capital
improvement
dollars
do
not
currently
fund
operating
costs
and
have
taken
significant
funding
cuts
since
2001
when
the
economy
forced
the
city
to
focus
its
limited
resources
on
providing
services.
Since
that
time,
two-thirds
of
capital
improvement
funding
has
been
used
to
maintain
existing
facilities
and
streets.
The
three
hour
presentation
called
attention
to
numerous
infrastructure
needs
throughout
the
city
and
highlighted
the
need
for
a
capital
improvement
strategy
that
allows
the
city
to
catch
up
on
deferred
maintenance
and
improvements.
A
A
citizen
advisory
group
has
recommended
that
council
ask
voters
if
they
will
approve
additional
bonding
that
would
be
paid
for
through
existing
revenues.
If
voters
approve
the
bonding
request
with
no
new
taxes,
city
staff
would
bring
forward
a
revised
2012
CIP
budget.
This
fall
August
is
back-to-school
month
and
see
you.
Students
are
starting
to
make
their
way
back
into
town
student
leaders
will
join
the
city
of
Boulder
and
see
you
officials
to
welcome
students
to
the
community
and
provide
information
about
how
to
be
good.
A
Neighbors
walk
about
teams
will
stroll,
through
the
streets
of
several
neighborhoods,
including
University,
Hill,
Cosgrove
and
portions
of
Martin
acres
to
provide
information
about
safe
parties,
local
ordinances
and
responsible
off-campus
living.
The
walk
will
be
led
by
city
manager,
Jane
Brad
agam
see
you
directors
and
other
city
and
campus
officials.
A
key
component
of
the
walkabouts
is
student
participation.
Student
leaders
are
paired
with
administrators
to
deliver
smart
party
guides
and
talk
with
their
fellow
students.
A
Local
students
will
be
told
about
party
registration,
another
joint
effort
between
the
city
and
see
you
that
has
been
very
successful.
In
recent
years.
Students
can
register
for
parties
at
the
UMC
and
receive
a
flyer
about
host
liability.
A

That's
all
the
time
we
have
for
this
week.
