Charlotte, NC — Death is never easy to accept, especially when it's two young police officers killed in the line of duty. Watch "John & Andy" on October 5 at 8:30 p.m. to see why this tragedy still affects the community.
On the twentieth anniversary of their death, the GOV Channel -- by community request -- is re-airing the Emmy-nominated program "John & Andy" featuring rare news footage of John Burnette, 25, and Andy Nobles, 26. Hear from their parents, fellow police officers, then-Mayor Richard Vinroot, and residents who knew and loved them.
Trisha Norket, John Burnette's mom is grateful she'll be able to spend time with her police family on the anniversary. "This year we're meeting to watch the video and see each other again."
Burnette and Nobles were shot and killed October 5, 1993 as they chased a suspect toward the woods behind Boulevard Homes in southeast Charlotte. Jerome Alden Harden, was later convicted on two counts of first degree murder.

in
about
police
officers
having
any
problems
and
they
had
not

was
in
route
to
the
area
and
a
short
time
later
officer,
Funderburk
George
Funderburk
called
in
and
said
he
had
had
officers
down
approximately.
I
Five
officers
were
already
present
price
down
in
a
kneeling
position,
looking
in
the
woods
and
I
think
one
was
standing
near
the
Andy
and
John
as
they
was
laying
down.
I
merely
ran
over
there,
where
the
good
officers
were
and
told
the
guys.
We
got
to
get
him
out
of
thee
out
of
the
woods
when
I
got
to
here.

of

officers
at
the
time
I
didn't
know
who
I
had
at
the
time,
because
when
I
got
arrived
on
the
scene,
both
officers
were
face
down,
so
I
immediately
got
to
the
to
the
first
officer.

I
grabbed
hands

on
and
immediately
some
other
officers
helped
carry.

car

I
realized
at
the
hospital
I
had
John
in
the
vehicle.

and

worried
about
the
suspect,

experience

that

his

each

was
just
the
longest

split
up
after
they
made
the
two
traffic
stop
on

van

they
took
off
running
and

officers
got
into
a
tussle,
our
fight
and

gun
was
removed,
and
neither
one
of
them
knew
that
the
gun
was
out
of
the

the
holster
until
it
was
too
late
and
that's
when
the
incident
happened
and
that's
that's.

astonished
by
different
phone
calls
that
I
received
from
other
police
departments
throughout
the
state
that
had
called
me
and
including
a
federal
agents
that
I
worked
with
in
the
past.
That
knew
that
me
and
Andy
was
partners.

at
one
time
you
know
just
it
just
I
guess
like
I,
don't
have
the
words
to
say
how
I
felt.

As
police
officers
have
a
responsibility
to
each
other
to
make
sure
that
each
of
us
get
home,
and
it's
not
that
I
don't
mean
that
a
way
that
I
could
have
done
anything
different
I
could
not
have
I
know
that
I
live
with
that
I
don't
have
any
problem
with
that.
There
was
a
reason
that
they
were
there
and
I
wasn't.
There
was
a
reason
that
it
was
those
two
and

what
nobody
else

Happened
to
John
and
Andy
in
the
midst
of
their
success,
just
highlighted
the
fact
that
those
are
community
policemen
that
those
are
men
who
were
working
in
the
community
and
integrating
themselves
into
the
neighborhood
and
the
folks
now
know
I

have
to
explain
what
it
is.
I
know
what
community
policing
is:
oh
yeah,
that's
what
John
nandi
did
they.

Understanding
you
know
they
didn't
just
sympathize.
They.
They
knew
a
lot
of
a
lot
of
the
young
folks
in
the
area
that
they
worked
in
got
into
trouble.
While
they
were
involved
in
crime
hardy,
what
he
did
the
things
he
did
because
of
the
type
of
environment
that
these
young
people
you
know
had
to
grow
up,
grow
up
in
and
they
just
you
know
they
had
a
lot
of
wisdom
and
empathy
beyond
their
years.

think
John.

Burnett
and
Andy
Nobles
were
also
trying
to
help
get
this
community
center
built
in
Jackson
Park,
but
coming
up
with
enough
money
to
finish
the
job
was
a
problem,
however,
since
the
deaths
of
those
officers,
donations
have
been
pouring
in
around
here.
Burnett
and
Nobles
earned
respect
even
from
at
least
one
of
the
people
they
arrested.

that
one
of
the
reason
is
that,
like
Andy,
got
into
the
community
place
and
was
because
of
the
the
children
he
loved
children,
I
mean
you
could
be
in
any
kind
of
situation.
If
there
was
a
child
there,
Andy
would
take
the
extra
few
minutes
just
to
say,
hey
or
strike
up
a
conversation
with
a
child,
but
he
was
in
it
for
the
children
and
the
elderly
people.

residents
are
the
people
on
the
street.

was
that
communication
gap.

didn't
know
how
to
talk
to
the
police.
If
they
were
seeing
talk

get
labeled
by
their
friends
as
a
snitch
or

just
anything

taboo.

it
was
a
project
sponsored
by
Mecklenburg,
County
Park
and
the
Jackson
Park
Community
Association,
and
they
asked
us
or
allowed
us.
We
asked
them
if
we
could
come
in
and
be
a
part
of
what
they
were
doing
and
help
this
community
policing
was
just
starting
and
that
allow
us
to
come
in.
We
help
them
install
the
will
playground
equipment
here
and
the
stand
here.
We
took
spread
most
of
sand
by
hand.
They
don't
know
with
the
truck,
had
couple
tractors
and
then
we
just
spread
that
stuff
by
hand
you.

with
them

who
I

if

a
young
gentleman
or
lady
has
a

it's
more
really
getting
involved
with
the
community
where
they
they
have
a
special
place
in
my
heart.

brought

to
love
your
own
neighborhood
and
love
yourself
first,
and
we
we
start
doing
that.

on
the
street
selling
drugs.
It's
not
gonna
be
anymore,

I'm
gonna
call
the
police,

so
it
changed
and
it
helped
the
community
we've.

biggest
thing
I
think
talking
about
the
legacy
of
John
and
Andy
I,
don't
think
it's
going
to
be
the
streets
named
after
him.
I,
don't
think
it's
gonna
be
a
monument
anywhere
I,

it's

any
documentary
done
on
them.
I
think
that
if
there's
a
legacy
that
they're
gonna
leave
it's
going
to
be
to
the
officers
in
the
community
policing
program
that
you
know
they
they
kind
of
in
the
short
period
of
time
that
they
were
able
to
work
in
this
program.
