A
I
came
to
this
country
when
I
was
close
to
10
years
old.
It
was.
It
was
easier
for
me
and
it's
for
the
older
folks
to
get
acclimated
to
this
Western
culture
and
then
take
me
along
because
my
family
was
the
first
Vietnamese
family
that
live
in
Cherryville,
small
town
here.
So
I
was
able
to
acclimate
pretty
fast
because
of
going
school.
A
There
was
no
other
Vietnamese
kids,
there
I
started
in
third
grade,
so
imagine
yourself
go
to
another
country,
don't
speaking
language
and
start
out
third
grade
I
went
there
with
junior
high
when
high
school
Cherryville,
then
I
went
to
UNC,
see
Charlotte
graduate
from
there
in
1994
I
was
a
criminal
justice.
Major
at
UNCC
and
I
speak
three
different
languages.
My
father's
always
pushed
me
to
do
something
with
a
career,
and
it's
just
one
of
those
things
that
I've
seen
it
during
the
time
that
I
was
living
in
Charlotte.
A
There
was
a
large
population
of
Vietnamese,
that's
getting
their
work
home
invasion,
and
it's
just
happened
that
some
of
those
people
that
house
of
get
invaded
was
Friends
of
my
father
and
so
I
feel,
like
you
know
what
these
people
they
know,
who
did
it?
They
can
see
them,
they
know
where
they
lived,
but
the
fact
is
they
don't
know
what
to
do.
They
fear
these
people
and
I
feel
so
bad
for
them.
A
I
became
a
police
officer
in
1997
now
being
the
first
Vietnamese
officer
was
a
challenge
because,
like
you
know,
most
officers
wherever
you
go,
the
uniform
attract
a
lot
of
attention.
Asian
people
haven't
seen
an
Asian
officer,
so,
of
course
all
the
eyes
are
gonna
be
on
you,
so
I'm
always
on
this
play,
and
so
I
have
to
act
appropriately
in
a
way
that
basically
will
help
with
the
case
or
defuse
a
situation.
You
don't
have
to
necessarily
Asian.
A
You
can
be
African
American,
but
the
long
as
that
community
know
who
you
are-
and
you
know
your
roots
to
me-
is
very
important
because,
like
most
officer
they
were
no
war
Mike.
How
did
you
get
these
people
to
tell
you
a
B
and
C's
when
they
didn't
tell
me
anything
well,
I,
build
up
trust
with
them
and
I
bet
that
trusts
me,
because
the
relationship
I
have
was
so-and-so.
A
I
started
out
as
a
patrol
officer
which
I
really
enjoy
because
I
really
out
there
with
the
community
and
be
seen
with
the
community,
then
after
that
I
was
on
a
unit
called
the
international
relations
unit
for
eight
and
a
half
years
where
there
was
six
seven
detectives
and
we
predominately
work
with
the
international
communities.
So
then
I
went
there
and
then
I
think
about
five
years
ago,
I
joined
the
the
gang
unit.
A
Gangs
has
always
been
here,
but
it's
a
little
bit
harder
with
the
international
community,
because
a
lot
of
time
is
go:
unreported
okay,
but
as
as
the
younger
generation
pop
up
and
more
people
or
able
to
speak
the
language,
then
they
call
they
will
they'll
call.
Now
when
one
more
often,
when
we
talk
about
gangs,
we
have
the
red
and
the
blue
and
the
of
less
well
with
agents
a
little
bit
different,
very
hard
for
us
to
go
out
there.
Oh,
these
are
guys
that
quote
a
traditional
game.
A
There's
just
a
group
of
guys
that
terrorizing
from
extortion
to
bring
to
people's
houses
and
things
that
nature.
The
thing
with
that
is,
we
see
a
reduction
in
their
because
now
we
have
four
or
five
other
Asian
officers
that
that
they're
able
to
reach
out
to
them-
and
maybe
the
community
whisperer
Tim
I,
know
so
so
did
this
Ness,
but
don't
get
me
involved.
So
it
gives
us
more
of
the
information
that
we'd
go
after
the
guy.
So
now
they
got
me
very,
very
careful
what
they
do.
A
So
in
that
aspect,
it's
how
it's
good,
because
we
build
a
community
trust
like
I
said
when
I
talk
to
game
ever
I
got
over
1700
on
my
game
in
my
game
and
we
got
all
kind
of
tools,
but
all
people
we
help
people,
but
your
game,
you
guys
did
bad
things
to
balance
things
out.
You
know
it's
you
family
to
me.
Come
first,
I
came
this
country
by
myself.
A
No,
no,
no
I
ever
see
my
mother
father
again
during
the
war,
so
I
value
family,
very
much
I'm,
the
oldest
of
five
in
my
family,
so
in
Asian
culture.
Normally
the
oldest,
are
like
the
father
of
house.
So
I
have
my
brothers
sister
here
now
and
then
of
course,
I'm
married.
My
wife's
also
work
with
C
MPD.
She
been
there
for
18
years.
So
she
understand
my
work.
You
know
what
my
kids
first
time.
They
don't
even
know.
A
I'm,
a
police
officer,
cuz
I,
don't
I,
don't
care
around
as
a
police
officer,
I
have
three
kids,
11,
9
and
4,
and
none
of
their
ever
been
spanked
before,
and
my
wife
and
I
raised
our
kids
in
a
way
about
respect
and
love.
So
therefore,
the
same
way
we
do
the
community
we
don't
have
to.
In
my
mind,
spank
somebody
to
hurt
somebody
to
make
them
understand.
A
What's
important,
I
think
CPD
to
me
is
a
great
opportunity
for
any
other
law
enforcement
morning,
because
it's
large
and
there's
so
many
different
doors
and
that
you
can
go
into
where
you
compare
that
to
a
smaller
department
where
you
limit
it
like
I,
said
so.
I
enjoyed
that
aspect,
because
there's
so
many
to
choose
from
you
can
go
from
robbery,
auto
theft,
whatever
that
you
wish
k9
SWAT,
that
is
out
there
that
you
can
have
an
opportunity
since
I've
been
going
on
16
years.
