The sun always sets, but the City of Charlotte never sleeps.

“There’s always something to do.”

Maintaining nearly 40 miles of track is a round-the-clock job for the Charlotte Area Transit System.

Each night, crossing gates are inspected along the LYNX Blue Line. And that’s just the beginning.

Darnelle “Dee” Rice and dozens of other third-shift employees work overnight to perform safety checks and preventative maintenance.

Their hard work allows CATS to operate safely and on schedule 97 percent of the time.

“And I know that I put my 100 percent in to make sure that everything that needed to get done got done.” Darnelle “Dee” Rice, Electro-Mechanical Technician.

And that’s exactly what you’ll find Melvin Mayfield doing.

"We deep clean. We do the panels, the windows, seats, stainless steel. Yeah, we do that before we do the floors. The last part of the job is the floor.” Melvin Mayfield, Rail Car.

CATS is dedicated to keeping our city and region on the move. Count on us to get you where you’re going.
