This video is one in a series of programs presented as part of the Cupertino City Channel's digital video archive project.
A
This
is
hi-tech,
I
even
have
my
name
up
on
the
thing
I
got
my
cue,
so
I
know
what
I'm
supposed
to
be
doing
welcome.
My
name
is
Don
Brown
I'm,
the
city
manager
of
Cupertino,
and
it's
my
pleasure
to
welcome
you
here
tonight
to
honor
some
really
special
people,
people
that
have
added
a
lot
to
what
makes
Cupertino
a
great
community
now
I'm.
My
job
is
to
describe
what's
going
to
happen
this
evening
and
then
to
introduce
the
mayor.
So
let
me
try
to
do
that
without
confusing
you.
A
A
A
A
The
City
Channel
who's
working
tonight
prepared
the
special
vignettes
that
the
audience
will
see.
These
vignettes
will
be
turned
into
a
regular
television
program
and
the
book
will
be
aired
several
times
over
the
next
few
months
on
the
city
channel.
The
show
will
premiere
on
Wednesday,
June,
19,
so
mark
your
calendars.
Each
of
the
recipients
will
receive
a
tape
of
the
full
ceremony
this
evening
within
a
week
of
tonight.
A
Now
let
me
tell
you
how
the
crest
honorees
are
selected
first
of
all,
they're
nominated
by
someone
in
the
community
and
then
a
committee
screens
the
applications
and
chooses
up
to
ten
recipients
per
year.
The
committee
is
made
up
of
representative
from
each
of
the
city's
advisory
boards.
That's
how
it
works.
It's
now
my
pleasure
and
honor
to
introduce
to
you
our
mayor,
Don,
Burnett,
Don,.
B
Thank
You
Don
and
welcome
everybody
tonight.
This
is
a
really
special
occasion,
as
occurs
every
spring.
Since
we've
started
the
crest
Awards
cupertino
is
a
special
place.
It
is
because
people
do
take
those
up
extra
steps
and
I
think
we
have
probably
a
marathons
worth
of
steps
that
we're
going
to
represent
here
tonight.
So
I
think
it's
going
to
be
a
fine
evening
and
without
any
further
in
or
do
I
do,
I'll
introduce
our
Vice
Mayor
John
Bautista,
who
will
present
the
first
recipients.
E
A
busy
escrow
officer
with
a
family
and
only
24
hours
in
a
day,
you
may
wonder
how
Linda
Benson
finds
the
time
to
be
one
of
the
city
strongest
community
volunteers,
deeply
involved
in
quota
international
of
Cupertino
since
1987
Linda
is
already
a
veteran
of
many
Dickens
fairs
last
year.
Chairing
the
annual
event.
D
D
The
people
in
our
company
are
encouraged
to
go
out
and
work
in
the
communities
where
we
work,
and
so
that's
it
makes
it
nice,
because,
if
I
have
to
take
half
of
the
day
to
go,
do
something
for
Dickens
Fair,
for
example,
I
can
take
it
and
know
that
my
job
is
still
secure.
Quota
is
very
active
in
Cupertino
and
very
well-known
and
I
thought.
This
would
be
a
good
way
for
me
to
contribute
back
and
get
to
know
some
people
in
the
community
as
well,
and
so
that's
why
I
chose
quota.
D
E
D
My
kids
grew
up
with
me
being
involved
with
it,
so
they
are
pretty
much.
They
know
that
that
I
do
things
like
this
and
they've
poured
multiple
glasses
of
coke
at
different
art.
Wine
festivals
and
my
husband
was
really
involved
in
Dickens
Fair
this
year,
hauling
the
motorcycle
around,
because
we
raffled
off
a
motorcycle.
D
D
Just
free
up
more
time
for
me
to
do
some
more
activities.
I
already
have
them
lined
up.
I
know
what
I'm
going
to
do.
I
can't
imagine
retiring
from
work
and
then
not
doing
something
else,
and
just
sitting
at
home.
I
can't
imagine
that
I
would
go
crazy.
So,
yes,
I,
definitely
think
that
adds
to
your
enjoyment
of
life.
At
least
you
feel
construct
you're,
doing
something
constructive
for
somebody
and
that
has
to
pay
I
have
to
make.
You
feel
happy.
C
Well,
then,
that
you've
been
so
involved
in
the
community
and
notably
your
involvement
in
the
Dickens
Fair,
which
is
a
very
important
event
in
our
community
that
we're
very
fond
of,
and
we
hope
that
you
will
continue
to
be
involved
in
that
event
and
with
your
involvement
and
raising
a
large
family
and
working
as
hard
as
you
do.
It
really
is
tremendous,
and
we
really
appreciate
the
time
and
effort
that
you've
devoted
to
our
community,
and
there
really
is
a
pleasure
to
present
this
award
to
you
tonight
on
behalf
of
the
community.
F
Good
evening,
it's
a
real
pleasure
to
be
a
part
of
the
program
here
tonight.
Next
recipient
is
a
couple
and
they
have
been
very
active
in
Cupertino
named
their
name
and
then
we'll
watch
a
little
bit
about
their
background.
First,
they
are
Chris
and
Lynn
Capener.
Let's
watch
a
little
bit
about
their
background
and
what
they
have
done
for
us
here,
because
the
team.
E
And
Chris
que
poner
are
an
inspiration
to
all
who
know
that
the
next
earthquake
may
just
be
the
big
win
over
sees
her
own
emergency
preparedness
organization
in
the
man
Drive
neighborhood.
She
also
trains,
others
in
earthquake
preparedness,
while
Chris
serves
as
Cooper
Tino's,
amateur
radio,
TV,
Services
Coordinator.
H
E
G
Actually
broke
out
the
roof
line
and
the
whole
thing
just
into
the
roof.
Probably
so
much
was
actually
into
our
living
room.
You
could
look
up
and
there
was
the
chimney.
So
we
were
quite
interested
in
preparedness
after
that
and
what
we
could
do
and
I
think
a
lot
of
it
just
was
for
my
own
peace
of
mind,
feeling
like
if
I
was
prepared,
then
I
wouldn't
be
so
worried
about
the
next
one.
E
G
Noticed
in
our
last
drill
just
last
year,
it
was
so
now
here's
another
drill,
no
big
deal,
but
that's
good,
because
in
a
real
event
you
don't
want
people
panicking,
you
don't
want
them
getting
flustered.
You
want
them
to
be
able
to
think
clearly
and
to
have
practiced
enough
that
they
know
it's
second
nature.
They
don't
even
have
to
stop
and
think
about
Perico
the
headquarters.
You
know,
search
and
rescue
pull
out
the
barrel,
get
the
maps
out
that
going
systematically.
So
nobody
is
enough-
and
you
know
exactly
what
you're
doing
and.
H
I
E
G
Day
out
here
we
have
a
really
close-knit,
neighborhood
and
I.
Think
a
lot
of
it
has
to
do
with
the
Opera
just
having
the
opportunity
to
get
together
as
groups
and
work
together.
There's
something
about
working
together.
That
increases
the
trust
level
in
the
neighborhood,
as
opposed
to
just
a
purely
social
situation.
You
can
do
neighborhood
barbecues,
but
you
don't
necessarily
get
to
know
people
as
well
as
if
you
actually
were
working
together
like
on
the
committee.
It's
got
a
whole
different
flavor
to
it
now.
G
H
F
We
are
so
proud
of
them.
It's
people
like
them
that
give
so
much
of
themselves
to
us
in
our
neighbors.
That
makes
our
so
proud
of
Cupertino
and
I.
Think
you
hit
it
right
the
nail
right
on
the
head,
then,
when
you
said
that
when
we
do
these
activities,
not
only
are
they
meaningful,
but
it
brings
people
together
and
increase
our
level
of
trust
and
care
about
each
other.
So,
on
behalf
of
the
city,
I
really
want
to.
Thank
you
so
much
for
your
efforts.

The

is
to
provide
service
to
the

particularly
to

At

J
Every
year,
people
who
care
about
the
world's
children
trick-or-treat
for
UNICEF.
This
is
how
we
do
it:
hi
I'm,
Meg
Ryan,
the
money
we
collect,
buys
medicine
clean
water,
nutrition
in
education.
It
saves
kids
lives
this
October,
wherever
you
go,
whoever
you
are
take
the
box
call
1-800
to
five
to

for
your
free
cards
UNICEF's,
because
every
child
is
our
child.
L
What
it's
just
kind
of
like
just
on
Jesus,
going,
there's
just
something
very
special
about
interacting
with
children
and
there's
something
magical
about
seeing
that
spark
in
their
eyes,
because
if
something
is
that
are
just
touching
and
I
show
they're
something
you
pulled
out
of
them.
That
they
did
me
know
was
there
in
the
first
place,
and
you
know
you
just
touch
them
in
a
way
that
you
never
know
what
it's
going
to
mean.
I
mean
a
very
easily
change
their
life
in
some
way.
E
She
loves
kids,
she
loves
them
so
much
that
Sandra
James
is
often
willing
to
work
from
sunup
to
sundown
on
their
behalf.
At
sunrise,
she
was
introducing
kindergartners
from
christa
mcauliffe
school
to
a
corn
snake
and
after
sundown
she
was
still
going
full-steam
discussing
school
building
standards
with
fellow
members
of
the
Cupertino
Union
School
District
Board
of
Education.
E
E
Thanks
largely
to
santa
clara
county
voters
and
Sandra's
leadership
in
last
year's
measure,
a
campaign
facilities
are
getting
a
71
million
dollar
shot
in
the
arm
for
six
time-consuming
months.
She
headed
a
committee
of
300
volunteers
in
an
all-out
effort
to
get
two-thirds
of
the
voting
public
to
commit
to
an
annual
assessment
for
school
renovations.
L
Became
clearer
and
clearer
to
us
and
to
me
that
it
was
going
to
be
a
monumental
task
that
this
was
going
to
be
very,
very
difficult
to
pass.
We
had
70,000
registered
voters
less
than
13%
of
school
aged
children.
Nobody
was
passing
increases
in
taxes,
better,
be
voting
them
down
consistently
and
we
had
to
get
2/3
of
the
vote.
L
Do
like
bringing
diverse
groups
of
people
together
and
sending
them
on
a
common
goal.
It's
kind
of
one
of
the
things
that
I
really
get
excited
about,
and
I
believe
and
I
believe
now
that
that
was
one
of
the
critical
things
that
needed
to
be
done
and
what
this
community
did
so
well.
This
community
should
be
so
proud
of
that
accomplishment
because
it
took
everybody
of
the
retired
community.
It
took
the
english-as-a-second-language
community.
It
took
the
student
that
took
the
professional
staff.
It
took
everyone
in
this
community.
L
My
family,
my
children,
are
wonderful,
they
just
you
know
they
see
my
enthusiasm
in
teaching
and
the
children
in
our
school
every
time
I
go
to
school
and
visit
the
children.
You
know
sometimes
that's
just
sort
of
thought
about
everything
else.
I
do
here,
whether
I'm
at
a
board
meeting
whether
in
a
business
meeting
whatever
it
all
comes
down
to
what
happens
when
it
all.
You
know
when
that
child
walks
into
the
classroom.
That's
what
really
really
kind
of
keeps
you.
K
She
got
rid
of
the
snake
she
get
rid
of
the
snake
when
you
look
at
the
crest
Awards
in
the
concept
behind
it
in
the
embodiment
of
energy
and
focus.
This
is
the
icon
for
the
crest
Awards
I
feel
our
community
extremely
blessed,
with
their
presence,
I
think
her
energy
level
her
attention
to
detail
the
commitment
she's
made
for
this
community.
We
can
say
nothing
but
thanks
and
that's
what
I'd
like
to
do.
Thank
you
outstanding
job.

E
His
career
in
Juvenile
Probation,
spanned
three
decades
before
he
retired
that
night,
and
during
that
time
he
successfully
diverted
many
convertido
youngsters
from
kindergarten
to
high
school
age,
away
from
crime
and
truancy,
understanding
the
need
for
early
intervention
in
the
lives
of
children
at
risk.
Terry
in
1989
introduced
the
youth
outreach
program
which
provides
one-on-one
counseling
to
minor
law
violators
and
truancy
cases.
His
duties
included
visiting
a
total
of
28
school
campuses
twice
a
month
for.

As
a
judge,
by
the
way
is
one
of
the
best
caseworkers
I
understand
that
it
just
starts
to
interview
and
talk
to
our
family.
Usually
other
problems
unfold
he's
an
expert
at
dealing
with
those,
and
so
we
all
try
to
work
together
in
there.
It's
a
real
team.
It's
a
real
team
effort
between
the
school
probation
above
court
apartment.
It's
a
team
effort
all
going
to
put
our
heads
together
and
try
to
resolve
the
problem
really
proud
of
you.
My
name
is
Terry
Mullen.
E
Commitment
to
his
young
charges
goes
beyond
the
city
limits
all
the
way
to
Sacramento.
He
spent
numerous
off-duty
hours
before
state
assembly
committees
to
promote
a
bill.
He
co-authored
a
bill
that
requires
young
drivers
to
provide
documentation
that
they
have
complied
with
mandatory
school
attendance
laws.
It.
N
N
Been
a
big
part
of
my
life,
it's
the
most
important
thing,
I've
done
in
30
years
as
a
probation
officer,
I've
been
given
a
lot
of
recognition.
Lee,
we
referred
my
position
but
see
to
me
I
just
thought:
I
recognition
right
back
at
the
people
who
are
giving
it
to
me
and
what
I
mean
by
that
is
it's
been.
It's
been
a
privilege.
It's
really
and
I
really
mean
it.
It's
been
an
honor
for
me
to
work
out
here.
N
The
people
that
I've
worked
with
have
been
so
supportive
I
can't
even
I
can't
begin
to
tell
you
the
Cupertino
Union
district,
the
Fremont
Union
district,
the
Sheriff's
Department,
the
city
managers,
City
Council
everybody's
been
so
supportive.
It
makes
my
job
easy
and
it's
a
real
collaborative
effort.
I
mean
it's,
it's
not
that's,
not
just
something
that
is
on
the
contract
and
nobody
pays
any
attention
to
it.
It
is
a
collaborative
effort.
Everybody's
working
together.
Q
M
I
jokingly
said
to
Kari:
I
was
going
to
say
this
while
Kari
here
we
are
again
Kari
and
I
have
been
involved
with
this
program.
Since
the
beginning
and
I've
known
him
and
I've
worked
with
him.
It
started
out
as
prevention
as
intervention,
and
it's
ended
up
as

Sort
of
life
serendipitous
things
just
sort
of
evolved
and
as
your
life
changes,
you
know
you're
suppose
hit
involved
in
different
kinds
of
things.
I
have
a
friend
whom
I
had
met
in
PTA
and
after
my
husband
died,
she
kept
saying
well
Carol.
Why
don't
you
come
and
you
know
just
come
and
have
lunch
with
her,
so
this
went
on
for
a
while
I
kept
saying:
well,
I'm,
not
ready,
I'm,
not
ready.
Well.
Finally,
in
1985,
I
I
said
okay.
Well,
little
did
I
know
what
I
was
getting
into.
E
Seeing
here
with
President
Agnes
Locker
Carol's
been
a
past
president
and
now
serves
as
recording
secretary
for
the
club
and
through
the
club.
Carol
has
immersed
herself
in
a
number
of
his
charitable
functions,
serving
Santa
Clara
County
in
March.
She
also
organized
the
club's
annual
Art
Show
featuring
600
pieces
of
original
art
from
youngsters
grades
K
through
12
public
attendance
grew

by

60%.

Q
E
I
Q
Know
I
feel
like
another
Hanuman
would
when
these
people
go
for
the
program
and
then
they
you
know,
go
out
and
join
the
the
community
of
worship
that
we
have
here
is
again
it's
very
rewarding
and
I
feel,
like
you
know,
I
consider
myself
a
soldier,
not
a
general
and
that's
the
type
of
thing,
I
more
or
less.
You
know
fall
into
and
I
just
get
a
lot
out
of
it.
E
Q
Think
really
that
you
don't
always
know
how
you
touch
people
I
know
people
have
touched
me
and
they
never
know
that
I
have.
They
have
touched
me
in
a
certain
way.
You
know
so
I
imagined
that
I
might
have
I.
Think
everybody
touches
everyone
for
good
or
for
bad
I.
Think
that
everybody
is
connected
everyone.
You
come
in
contact
with.
Q
I
M
Think
Carol
epitomizes
the
volunteerism
that
exists
in
this
community
and
it's
indeed
a
pleasure
to
be
introducing
her.
Today
she
is
a
volunteer,
as
you
saw
with
the
Cupertino
federated
Women's
Club
and
I,
at
handling
600
pieces
of
art
from
children
and
just
getting
it
organized.
That
was
a
really
a
big
job.
M
I
can
I
can
tell,
among
other
things,
Carol
also
handles
the
holiday
Angel
Tree,
which
is
a
benefit
by
the
Cupertino
federated
Women's
Club
to
the
Santa
Clara
County,
Children's,
Shelter
and
I
know
that
that's
greatly
appreciated
every
Christmastime
and
she's
active
in
st.
Joseph's.
One
other
thing
that
hasn't
been
mentioned,
and
it's
actually
the
first
time
tonight
that
I
have
the
pleasure
of
mentioning
it.
Carol
is
a
volunteer
for
Cupertino
community
services
and
she
drives
and
deliveries
brown
bag
lunches
for
the
people
there.
I.
Thank
you
for
all
of
your
volunteerism.

The
same
people
keep
coming
back
to
our

Some
of
these
are
our
professional
book
dealers.
Others
are
just
book
lovers
and
some
of
a
fairly
wide
area
over
the
county.
We
get
people
from
Berkley
and
and
Santa

and
they
say,
and
these
people
go
to
a
lot
of
sales,
and
they
say
this
is
the
best
sale
and
that's
really.
We
like
that.
B
Congratulations:
I've
got
to
take
this
opportunity
to
give
a
plug
for
the
organization
that
they've
worked
with
so
much
the
Friends
of
the
Cupertino
library
they
can
use
help.
So
if
we've
got
any
more
people
interested,
why
that'd
be
great
Louis
has
served
as
president
of
the
organization.
As
you
can
see,
it
does
an
awful
lot
for
one
of
our
most
important
community
facilities.
B
Interesting
story
that
was
given
to
me
as
Curtis
and
Louis
are
sorting
all
these
very
many
books
for
the
sails
and
the
things
that
get
included
as
bookmarks
that
they
find
when
they're
going
through
these
and
sometimes
they're
kind
of
interesting.
They
found
lottery
tickets,
antique
photographs
and
one
time
what
appeared
to
be
a
Confederate
dollar
bill
and
all
these
items
are
saved
and
displayed
in
the
sorting
room.
I
understand
the
library.
One
of
the
more
interesting
things
is
that
one
day
they
were
looking
for
booking
and
they
came
out
with
a
marriage
license.
B
And
so
well,
we
have
to
do
something
about
this,
so
they
went
to
great
lengths
and
finally,
indeed
did
track
down
the
people
who
owned
the
marriage
license
only.
Sadly,
it
turned
out
that
they
weren't
interested
in
any
more.
The
couple
had
become
divorced,
so
not
all
of
these
things
have
happy
ending
tree.
