A
A
Good
afternoon,
I
would
like
to
welcome
everyone
to
the
2023
city
of
Cupertino,
spelling
bee.
My
name
is
Duty
halambi.
The
vice
chair
of
cupertino's,
teen,
commission
and
I
will
be
your
spelling,
master
and
MC.
For
this
event,
we
are
so
excited
to
have
our
Cupertino
youth
engage
in
these
educationally
enriching
events,
and
we
are
proud
of
our
contestants,
we'll
be
showcasing
their
spelling
skills
for
us
today.
Now
I
would
like
to
introduce
our
judges
in
today's
competition.
Today's
panel
is
comprised
of
two
teen
commission
members
and
one
Youth
Activity
Board
member.
A
On
our
judging
panel.
We
have
Reina
Shaw
from
the
Teen
commission
who's
an
8th
grader
at
Miller,
Middle
School
and
is
the
lead
judge
for
this
event.
Joyce
Chong
from
the
Teen
commission,
who's
in
ninth
grade
at
Lindbergh,
High
School,
and
will
be
the
arbitrator
and
Ishita
vemila
who's
a
12th
grader
at
Cupertino,
High
School
from
the
Youth
Activity
Board
and
will
be
our
own
master.
A
We
would
also
like
to
add
a
special
thanks
to
the
Cupertino
Youth
Activity
Board,
a
select
group
of
teen
volunteers
that
organize
and
run
community
events
with
Cupertino,
Parks
and
Recreation
to
help
plan
organize
and
run
today's
spelling
beam,
the
city
of
cupertino's
video
division,
who
are
working
diligently
to
record
edit
and
publish
this
event
online
for
our
community
and
finally
Ron
Bullock,
who
worked
hard
to
set
up
the
soon
for
our
Spelling
Bee.
Thank
you
so
much
guys.
We
appreciate
it.
A
Now,
at
this
time,
family
and
audience
members
I'd
like
to
go
over
four
important
audience
rules
number
one.
Please
place
your
cell
phones
on
silent
so
as
to
not
disturb
our
spellings
number.
Two
please
always
remain
quiet
and
allow
our
participants
to
focus
any
sort
of
help
from
the
audience
to
the
participants
is
strictly
forbidden.
A
A
When
it
is
your
turn
to
spell
I'm
going
to
say
the
word,
and
at
that
time
you
may
ask
for
the
following.
You
may
ask
me
for
the
definition
of
the
word.
You
may
ask
me
to
repeat
the
word
up
to
three
times
and
you
can
ask
me
to
use
the
word
in
a
sentence
when
you're
ready
to
begin
spelling.
I
want
you
to
remember
to
say
the
word
spell
the
word,
and
now
this
is
very
important.
I
want
you
to
then
say
the
word
again
to
the
judges
and
I
know
you're
finished.
A
Let's
do
a
quick
practice.
Example
say
my
word
is
a
mess.
I
would
first
say
the
word
mess
then
I
would
spell
it
m
e
s
s
and
then
I
would
say
it
again
mess.
So
it
would
go
like
this
mess
m
e
s
s
mess
once
you
begin
to
spell
the
word
you
can
stop
and
go
back,
but
you
cannot
change
the
letters.
You've
already
said.
Okay,
did
everyone
get
that
you
cannot
change
the
letters
you've
already
said.
A
Okay,
and
as
always,
you
can
ask
me
for
the
definition
of
the
word,
to
repeat
the
word
or
to
use
in
a
sentence
got
it
once
you're
done,
I
will
rely
on
the
judges.
Who
will
tell
me
whether
the
word
was
correct.
If
you
spell
the
word
correctly,
you
may
sit
back
down
in
your
signed
seat.
If
you
spell
the
word
incorrectly,
you
may
join
your
parents
in
the
audience
and
it
will
share
the
correct
spelling
with
everyone.
A
A
A
Word
is
grasp
grasp
grasp
g
r,
a
s
p
grasp
that
is
correct,
participant
number
four.
You
may
come
up
to
the
mic.
Your
word
is
ounce
ounce.
He
bought
10
ounces
of
peas
from
the
supermarket
ounce
ounce,
o.
U
n
c
e
ounce.
That
is
correct,
good
job
participant
number.
Five!
You
make
a
lump
to
the
microphone.
A
Usual?
U
s!
U!
A
l
usual!
That
is
correct,
good
job
participant
number!
Eight!
Your
word
is
Neil
Neil.
Can
you
say
it
in
a
sentence?
Yes,
they
knelt
down
and
prayed
Neil
Neil
k-n-e-e-l
Neil.
That
is
correct,
good
job
participant
number!
Nine.
Your
word
is
alert
alert.
A
E
A
B
C
A
Why
a
CHT,
that
is
correct,
say
the
word
again:
yeah
y-a-c-h-d
yeah,
that
is
correct,
good
job
participant
number
18!
You
make
a
move
to
the
mic.
Your
word
is
horrid.
Horrid
definitely
can
you
please
say
the
definition
very
unpleasant
or
disagreeable
horrid
hood
h-o-r-r-I-d
horid.
That
is
correct,
good
job
participant
number
19.
You
may
come
up
to
the
White
Mike.
A
I
Wait
actually
I
think
he
pronounced
the
word
wrong
at
the
beginning,
so
he
misunderstood,
which
word
it
is.
He
didn't
realize
he
thought
it
was
sodio
instead
of
sodium
okay.
A
A
A
That
is
correct,
participant
number.
Seven,
your
word
is
diaper
diaper.
Could
you
please
use
it
in
a
sentence?
Did
you
change
his
diaper
yet
diaper
diaper.

I
I
think
you
pronounced
the
word
wrong.
He

it
was
Jacko,
but
it's
actually
jackal.
Okay,
yeah.

I'm
sorry:
what's
the
definition.
A
A
E
A
A
A
A
As
you
oh
yeah,
as
you
can
now
see,
we
have
two
spellers
remaining,
which
means
we
automatically
enter
into
a
spell-off
and
at
this
point
the
rules
change
a
little
bit.
I
lost
the
first
participant.
To
spell
the
word,
and
if
the
participant
spelled
the
word
correctly,
I'll
go
to
the
next
participant.
However,
if
the
participant
misspells,
the
word
I,
will
ask
the
next
participant.
A
To
spell
the
same
word,
and
if
they
correctly
spell
that
word,
then
that
person
left
to
spell
one
more
word
in
order
to
be
officially
crowned
Champion
if
they
missed
the
second
word,
then
we
return
to
the
rotation
again.
So
it's
a
double
or
nothing
situation.
Spellers.
Are
you
ready?
Okay,
good
luck.
Number
15!
Your
word
is:
do
I
still
have
to
walk
up
yeah
yeah?
Your
word
is
mutable
mutable.

is
correct.
We
will
now
ask
our
speller
to
spell
one
more
word
correctly.
If
they
spell
this
next
word
correctly,
they
will
be
our
spelling
bee
Champion
if
they
missed
the
second
word,
we
will
ask
fathers
eliminated
in
this
last
round
to
return
the
stage
and
we'll
restart
this
round
with
the
next
round
number
participant
number.
Two.
Are
you
ready?
Your
word
is
ingenious.
