A
A
What
we'd
like
to
do
today
is
to
take
you
through
the
story
of
the
cupertino
library
expansion,
but
we're
going
to
do
it
in
a
way
that
shows
you
some
of
the
various
parts
that
work
together
to
bring
us
this
wonderful
space,
but
for
each
person
more
from
a
personalized
type
of
perspective,
for
any
public
project
like
this
there
are.
There
are,
of
course,
several
elements
converging
together.
A
A
Our
first
speaker
today
on
the
question
which
is
once
again:
what
is
your
or
one
of
your
favorite
early
memories
of
a
library
and
what
do
libraries
mean
to
you
is
congressman
o'connor.
The
congressman
sends
his
well
wishes
today,
because
congressional
session
related
activities
keep
him
in
washington
dc.
But
it
is
my
pleasure
to
present
to
you
recorded
above
on
the
second
floor
of
the
library
expansion
this
past
weekend.
The
thoughts
on
this
topic
by
congressman
rochana.
B
Hi,
I'm
congressman
ro
connor,
congratulations
on
the
opening
of
the
library
expansion
project.
You
know
when
I
was
growing
up.
I
remember
my
parents
used
to
take
me
to
the
northampton
library.
I
grew
up
right
outside
philadelphia
and
they
used
to
have
something
called
a
card
catalog
back
then,
and
I
used
to
go
through
it
and
search
for
books,
and
I
had
a
teacher
actually
who
did
the
young
authors
program
and
I
remember
as
a
fifth
grader.
B
We
all
had
to
write
a
book
and
they
have
them
in
the
library
you
know
today,
I'm
really
proud.
I
actually
have
written
two
books
and
I
can't
help
but
think
it
was
partly
my
experience
in
the
library
back
in
elementary
school
and
junior
high,
so
libraries
are
so
important
to
a
community
and
I'm
so
proud
of
cupertino
for
this
project.
C
Thank
you
very
much
congressman
khanna
the
background
of
khanna.
The
greenery
is
actually
behind
this
screen.
I
encourage
everyone
to
go
to
the
second
floor.
You'll
see
the
beautiful
oak
grove
behind
this
and
darcy
glanced
at
the
civil
decision
was
made,
but
without
him
darcy
continued
the
consistent
advocacy
for
library
expansion.
It
would
not
be
possible
and
I'm
so
glad
when
I
was
elected
in
in
2019,
I
was
able
to
cast
that
vote
to
make
this
a
reality
and
we
are
building
not
only
one
story
but
two
stories
of
the
library
expansion
without
further
ado.
C
D
Well,
boy,
what
a
happy
friday
it
is
today
and
a
very
celebratory
gathering
to
the
mayor
and
honorable
city
council.
Thank
you
very
much
for
your
vision
in
helping
to
bring
together
our
community
here
in
cupertino.
D
That
was
the
place
of
for
babysitting,
and
we
saw
our
librarian,
mrs
smith
and,
of
course,
while
we're
studying
very
diligently,
I
would
also
throw
paper
airplanes
with
love
notes
to
other
girls
to
pass
the
time,
and
while
some
things
have
changed
since
then,
not
throwing
paper
airplanes
and
chasing
young
girls.
For
me,
what
is
timeless
is
the
importance
of
gathering
and
that's
what
our
libraries
are
all
about.
And
specifically,
we
have
focused
on
a
statement
of
values.
The
reflection
of
values
is
that
of
funding
for
our
local
library.
D
Here
in
cupertino
and
exactly
our
state
library,
and
in
fact
it
is
the
state
library
that
helps
provide
us,
the
historical
context,
to
legislative
proposals,
what
we've
done
and
to
share
the
history
so
that
we
can
remember
where
we've
come
from.
I
also
want
to
make
note
that
we
were
asked
to
help
donate
specific
books
to
this
beautiful
cupertino
library
and
this
book
that
I'll
be
donating.
D
D
And
I
know
that
we'll
be
hearing
as
well
from
our
fellow
state
representatives
and
senator
cortez
and
assimilator
berman.
Thank
you
very
much,
and
congratulations
and
I'll
ask
our
representative
from
the
state
senate,
as
well
as
the
state
assembly
to
please
come
on
up
and
also
provide
additional
commentary
with
respect
to
the
presentation
of
your
awards.
So
we
can
get
a
photo.
D
D
Let's
have
their
representatives,
then,
with
certificates
also
from
the
state
senate
as
well
as
from
senator.
So
this
is
from
the
state
senate,
senator
dave,
cortezzi
and
representing
assembly
member
mark
berman
claire.
Please.
E
Yeah,
thank
you
so
much
assemblymember,
lo
I'll,
just
keep
it
quick.
You
know
it
means
a
lot
for
the
senator's
office
to
be
here
today,
myself
as
well.
You
know
thinking
about
our
earliest
memories
with
libraries.
I
grew
up
in
our
cupertino
libraries.
I
was
the
daughter
of
a
cupertino
librarian,
so
means
a
lot
to
be
here.
So
thank
you,
mayor
paul.
Thank
you.
F
F
Well,
along
the
way
the
city
council
needs
to
work
with
our
staff
and
try
to
make
sure
everything
goes
according
to
plan
and
that
it
gets
done
well
and
I'm
so
pleased
that
our
staff
has
done
such
a
great
job.
I
mean
just
look
around
when
you
go
upstairs.
You
also
see
fantastic
job,
so
representing
our
staff
will
be
our
assistant,
city
manager,
diane
thompson
and
our
program
manager,
susan,
michael
and
they'll,
be
introducing
some
additional
staff
and
sharing
some
stories
that
they
have
about
their
fondness
for
the
library.
H
G
G
So
this
group
of
staff
that
you
just
saw
standing
former
and
current-
I
want
to
thank
all
of
you
for
your
work
on
behalf
of
the
community.
Even
if
you
were
not
directly
involved
in
this
project,
your
efforts
contribute
each
day
to
a
better
quality
of
life
in
cupertino.
G
Your
teamwork
and
dedication
are
impressive,
and
this
project
is
just
one
example
of
the
teamwork
that
this
group
demonstrates
every
day.
Thank
you.
So
much
next
I'd
like
to
introduce
a
few
individuals
who
were
directly
involved
in
making
this
project
happen.
I'll
just
mention
a
couple:
important
people,
first,
former
city
manager,
deb
fang,
who
helped
get
the
project
off
the
ground
and
who
was
not
able
to
join
us
today
and
also,
quite
importantly,
jim
troop,
our
new
city
manager,
jim.
G
G
So
I
would
describe
roger
as
my
partner
in
crime
on
this
project.
He
is.
He
was
involved
from
the
very
beginning
and
along
with
his
staff,
he
really
formed
the
backbone
they
formed
the
backbone
of
the
project.
One
example
would
be
that
this
undertaking
involved
the
design
build
process
and
for
those
of
you
who
are
not
familiar,
it's
a
pretty
complex
legal
process
which
roger
agreed
to
take
on
for
the
first
time
in
his
career
to
to
do
this.
G
Michael
is
our
former
capital
improvements
project
manager
and
he
was
the
project
manager
on
this
project
from
the
very
beginning
until
the
design
build
contract
was
awarded
so
roger
and
michael
really
shepherded
this
project
from
inception
through
the
award
of
that
design
build
contract,
which
was
a
hugely
complex
undertaking,
as
I
mentioned,
and
then
shortly
after
michael
retired.
We
then
hired
susan,
michael
who's
standing
to
my
left.
G
G
She
came
on
board
shortly
before
construction
began,
with
no
public
sector
experience
and
for
those
of
you
who
are
who
know
about
the
public
sector,
we
have
a
lot
of
rules
and
they're
kind
of
different
than
the
private
sector.
So
susan
had
many
years
of
experience
as
a
very
accomplished
architect,
but
she
had
to
learn
what
the
public
sector
was
about
pretty
quickly
and
she
did
a
great
job.
G
G
And
before
I
pass
the
microphone
to
susan
I'd
like
to
thank,
I
know,
they'll
be
mentioned
later,
but
I
just
wanted
to
take
this
opportunity
to
thank
our
library,
commissioners,
especially
chair
pan
and
the
cupertino
library
foundation,
for
their
continued,
enthusiastic
support
of
the
project.
And
lastly,
I
will
share
what
libraries
mean
to
me.
I
can
do
this
in
two
words:
claire
varesio,.
G
Claire
is
our
fabulous
community
librarian
and
she
has
been
an
invaluable
partner
on
this
project.
Each
step
of
the
way
and
she's
been
a
delight
to
work
with.
Thank
you
so
much
claire.
It's
been
great,
really
appreciate
your
work.
I'd
also
like
to
thank
county
librarian,
jennifer
weeks
and
library,
administrative
and
financial
services
manager,
chuck
griffin.
Thank
you
for
your
support
and
with
that
I'll
turn
it
over
to
susan.
I
I'll
try
to
make
this
quick.
I
have
a
few
more
people
to
think
think
believe
it
or
not,
because
this
was
a
huge
team
effort.
I
want
to
thank
the
building
planning
departments,
sean
hatch,
paulo
sullivan,
pew
gauche
and
jeff
suma
sumura.
They
were
awesome,
assistant
directors
of
public
works,
chad,
mosley
and
jimmy
tan
were
always
there
to
jump
in
when
we
needed
help
and,
most
almost
most
importantly,
the
countless
teams
of
people
from
the
service
center.
I
The
public
works
service
center
who
really
helped
on
this
project
facilities,
streets,
grounds,
trees,
all
pitched
down
numerous
times.
They
have
an
amazing
ability
about
our
facilities,
our
infrastructure
and
how
to
best
manage
the
invisible
parts
of
these
projects
kudos
to
so
many
people,
brad
alexander
brian,
gathers
jonathan
ferrante
travis
warner,
who
helped
today
with
all
the
courtyard
stuff
is
amazing.
Last
minute,
stuff
is
great,
and
mostly
robert
griffis
who's,
not
here
tonight,
but
he's
our
point
person
at
the
library
for
facilities
and
he's
a
great
font
of
knowledge
for
the
project.
I
So
I
also
want
to
give
some
serious
props
to
the
communications
and
I.t
teams.
Esther
kwan
brian
babcock
ray
delgado,
peter
collins,
tauren,
scott,
michelle
martin,
adam
raza,
twan,
quash
ikram,
nabi
and
benny
shea,
who
they
produced
all
those
videos.
I
don't
know
if
you've
been
watching
on
our
website,
but
the
live
stream
camera
we
had
to
like
reset
that
thing
all
the
time
they
worked
really
hard
to
make
this
this
project
accessible
to
the
public
during
covid.
I
So
we
really
appreciate
those
efforts
and
the
efforts
are
you
doing
today
to
produce
this
event
as
well?
So
thank
you
very
much
and
you're
going
to
hear
more
about
the
designers
and
the
contractors
later,
but
I
will
mention
griffin
structures
who
are
ever
present
cm
pm
firm
for
the
project,
the
bridging
architects
ehdd.
I
They
established
a
very
collaborative
tone
for
the
project
from
day
one
working
effectively
with
the
design
and
construction
team,
as
well
as
the
community
stakeholders
to
arrive
at
a
design
that
we
can
all
be
proud
of.
Jay
manzo
was
on
the
project
from
the
start
and
aylish
was
the
artist
you'll
meet
them
both
for
the
both
art
and
the
donor
walls.
So
an
amazing
team.
I
The
design
build
entity,
rodin
and
sva
you'll
hear
more
from
them
later
too,
but
they
were
in
part
this
this
project,
this
design
build
project
is
successful
because
they
were
such
a
great
partner
for
the
city
and
the
staff.
They
went
the
extra
mile
time
and
time
again
to
make
sure
that
this
project
was
well
constructed,
memorable,
beautiful,
functional
all
the
things
and
they
had
all
the
usual
complications
of
a
construction
project,
as
well
as
the
unknown
existing
conditions.
I
They
had
to
creatively
work
to
address
and
the
cobit
supply
chain
issues
so
huge
kudos
to
them,
and
there
are
some
really
talented
project,
talented
people
working
on
this
project,
and
I
think
it
shows-
and
I
hope
you
all
take
as
much
delight
in
the
space
as
we
do
so
and
what
libraries
mean
to
me:
it's
a
the
intersection
of
introspection
and
being
in
the
world
being
in
the
community.
So
that's
a
really
valuable
thing
for
me,
because
I'm
both
an
introvert
and
an
actress
extrovert.
I
J
All
right,
thank
you,
diane
and
susan,
and
thank
you
to
all
the
wonderful
members
of
our
city
staff.
It
is
my
pleasure
to
introduce
our
bridging
architects
at
this
time
early
in
the
process,
cupertino
hired
bridging
architects
to
come
up
with
a
bridging
design,
so
to
speak,
to
help
conceptualize
the
plan
for
the
new
library
expansion
space
as
part
of
the
design
build
bid
process
that
we
introduced
to
the
city
with
this
project
staff
utilized
a
bridging
architect
e
ehdd
to
help
guide
the
end
product.
J
K
I
just
want
to
say
first
of
all,
wow
I
don't
lindsay.
Do
you
remember
laying
out
these
spaces
and
like
laying
out
the
seats,
I
I
don't
think
I'd
ever
thought
of
standing
at
the
mic
when
we
were
like
talking
about
okay,
the
screen's
gonna
be
here
and
how
many
chairs
and
how
many
rows.
So
it's
just
amazing
to
look
out
and
to
see
the
faces
of
people.
I
know
partners
in
crime
roger
it's
great
to
see.
You
michael
zimmerman.
It's
great
to
see
you.
L
I
wanted
to
thank
my
team
jay
manzo
lindsay
keones
jennifer
devlin
herbert
who
can't
be
here
today,
and
I
wanted
to
share
a
little
bit
about
what
libraries
mean
to
me,
and
I
think
this
includes
our
whole
team,
a
trustee
sanctuary
from
the
world,
a
treasured
part
of
my
weekly
routine
from
childhood
onwards,
our
communities
beating
heart
everywhere,
every
city
that
we
find
ourselves
in
and
a
milky
way
of
words
and
worlds
and
lives
remembered
and
relived.
So,
thank
you
so
much.
It's
been
a
real
pleasure,
real
privilege.
H
Thank
you
and
english.
I'm
hung
way
one
of
the
great
four
cupertino
city
council
members,
of
course,
once
the
bridging
architecture
work
is
done,
we
then
have
the
final,
architectural
design
of
the
project
itself.
Together
with
the
builder
team,
we
are
very
happy
to
have
members
of
design
built
team
which
was
comprised
of
hva,
architects
and
rodent
builders
here
with
us
today,
and
we
thank
them
for
all
their
excellent
work
done
to
make
this
project
excellent.
H
I
want
to
share
one
thing:
what
library
means
to
me?
It
is
a
bridging
place
for
generations
of
reading
learning
and
connection,
so
what
a
fine
breeding
bridging
place
we
have
now.
Ladies
and
gentlemen,
let's
welcome
nathan
herrera
from
hva
architects
and
zac
via
herrera
and
greg
mario
from
rodent
builders.
The
design
building
give
them
a
big
round
of
applause.
M
Thanks
a
lot
so
we've
got
our
team
andy
rios
our
project,
engineer,
xavier
herrera,
our
project,
superintendent
and
nathan.
Herrera
is
our
architect
with
sva
myself
greg
merrill
project
manager.
B
M
O
Few
words
yeah,
I
didn't
said
before
I'd
like
to
thank
the
ehd
team
and
jay.
If
you've
set
this
up
for
a
wonderful
project,
we
do
quite
a
bit
of
design,
build
and
a
great
starting
point
sort
of
have
everything
laid
out
in
such
a
beautiful
way.
For
us
to
get
going
was
a
a
treat
and
especially
important
for
me.
I
think
my
most
characteristic
posture
since
I
was
five
is
head
buried
in
a
book
and
someone's
snapping
like
this
does
get
me
to
look
up
and
now
that
I've
got
a
seven-year-old
and
four-year-old
reading.
O
C
C
Next,
we
have
our
cupertino
library
foundation,
an
organization
which
has
done
much
work
with
council
to
support
the
library
expansion.
I
especially
like
to
thank
them
for
leading
the
donation
effort.
I
think
it
was
an
idea
that
we
want
to
get
the
community
involved,
so
we
can
get
some
community
donation,
but
this
idea
would
not
be
a
reality
without
the
entire
library
foundation
board
members
and
reaching
out
to
the
community
and
working
with
the
design
team
to
make
that
beautiful
donor
wall.
C
P
Thank
you
very
much
council
member
liang
cho
for
the
introduction
and
a
very
warm
welcome
to
all
of
you
in
these
beautiful
new
spaces.
At
the
library
my
name
is
kiran
vashniya.
I
am
the
president
of
cupertino
library
foundation
and
here
on
the
podium.
We
have
are
some
of
my
existing
board
members
and
some
of
our
past
presidents.
P
So
I'm
just
going
to
call
out
the
names
here:
inno
schmidt,
jerry
liu,
gary
young
sita,
lakshmi
nila,
majumda
and
chin
pen
she's.
Also
the
library
commissioner.
P
I
want
to
say
first
a
very
big
thank
you
to
mayor
darcy
paul
for
your
leadership,
yes
and
support
of
the
city
council
for
this
project.
I
have
we
have
to
commend
the
city
staff
we've
heard
from
them.
We
started.
I
was
talking
to
diane.
We
started
back
in
2019
the
library
staff,
our
cupertino
librarian,
claire
veracio,
for
really
all
the
efforts
through
these
years
to
bring
this
project
to
fruition
and
these
wonderful
spaces
for
us
to
use.
Thank
you
very
much.
P
P
In
fact,
this
project
this
undertaking
is
a
perfect
example
of
that
we've
had
our
patrons,
come
and
contribute,
and
you
see
that
we
recognize
them
there.
On
the
community
donor
wall,
we
have
had
organizations
individuals
in
our
communities,
making
a
large
contribution
in
terms
of
funds
for
this
project,
and
we
say
a
big
thank
you
to
them
really.
P
Q
All
right
claire,
are
you
joining
us?
Yes,
thank
you
so
much
good
evening,
I'm
jennifer
weeks
and
I
am
the
county
librarian
for
the
santa
clara
county
library
district
of
which
we
are
so
very,
very
proud
to
have
cupertino
library,
be
a
member
of
our
district
and
with
me
tonight
already
the
star
of
the
show.
Certainly
claire
varisio
is
your
community
librarian
here
in
cupertino.
Q
Q
You
know
two
minutes
so
of
course
now
he
asked
me
a
librarian.
What
do
libraries
mean
to
me.
J
Q
Well,
a
lot
a
lot,
but
for
me
personally,
libraries
have
always
been
special.
So
while
I
was
growing
up,
I
moved
around
a
lot
coast
to
coast.
I
went
away
to
college
I
studied
abroad.
Q
Q
The
helpful
librarians,
the
books,
of
course,
and,
most
importantly,
the
sense
of
belonging
and
connection
public
libraries
invite
everyone
in
santa
clara
county
library
district
is
so
grateful
that
the
city
of
cupertino
and
its
partners
have
invested
in
this
beautiful
library
space
to
provide
the
community
with
resources
for
lifelong
learning
and
for
everyone
a
place
to
belong.
Thank
you.
So
much
for
being
partners
with
us.
J
Okay,
thanks
jennifer,
and
thank
you
to
the
county,
library,
district
and
staff
for
all
that
you
do
for
our
county
and
for
cupertino
next,
I
am
so
very
pleased
to
be
able
to
introduce
our
cupertino
library,
commission,
our
cupertino
commissions
and
committees
are
composed
of
volunteers
from
the
community
who
care
greatly
about
our
city
and
who
have
supported
this
library
expansion
project
from
the
beginning.
I'm
very
pleased
to
welcome
up
to
the
stage
all
current
and
past
members
of
the
cupertino
library,
commission
and
representing
the
commission
is
qin
pan.
J
R
C
R
Missy
one
okay
yeah,
she
just
left
there.
Thank
you
so
much
with
us
with
all
their
support.
You
know
we
have
have
this
beautiful
expansion
project
and
for
my
two
minute
speech
I
just
want
my
favorite
the
memory
of
this
library
the
other
day.
I
need
to
get
something
from
claire
and
the
community
library
and
she
happened
another
in
the
office,
so
she
made
an
arrangement,
ask
library
and
julius
hosted
me,
and
at
the
moment
I
saw
her.
I
remember
her
from
the
story.
R
Time
is
what
now
my
21
years
old
had
with
her-
and
I
remember
this
was
my
favorite
early
memory
of
the
library
we
visited
the
library
every
week
for
the
story
time
and
brought
back
home
a
full
bag
full
of
books
as
many
as
the
five
years
old
can
carry
so
now
with
this
completion
of
this
new
library.
If
you're
looking
for
the
floor
here,
you
know
it's
designed
for
the
kids
to
have
story.
R
H
Thank
you
ching
for
sharing
your
memory
of
the
library
and
thank
you
for
all
the
current
past
present
of
the
library
commission
and
now
I'd
like
to
introduce
our
parks
and
recreation
commission
past
and
present,
and
I'd
like
to
especially
recognize
the
current
partisan
regulation.
Commissioner
president
meena
she
and
sashi
berger
and
the
current
vice
chair,
welcome,
mina
and
sashi.
Please
bring
your
thing
up.
S
Hello,
thank
you,
council
member
hue
hi.
My
name
is
sashi
bigor,
I'm
the
vice
chair
of
the
parks
and
rec
commission,
and
we
have
here
carol
stennik,
who
was
our
previous
chairperson
just
recently
and
then
david
fung,
who
was
our
previous
parks
and
rec
and
as
well
planning.
I
believe.
S
So
it's
a
it's
a
pleasure
to
be
here.
Thank
you,
mayor
for
inviting
us
to
this.
There
have
obviously
been
many
parks
and
rec
commissioners
before
me.
They,
the
city
staff
and,
of
course,
with
director
mcgrady,
have
made
our
cupertino
parks
and
as
well.
S
You
know
the
recreation
activities
offered
some
of
the
best
in
the
silicon
valley.
As
far
as
I
know,
but
we
in
cupertino
are
very
fortunate.
We
have
another
gem
and
that
is
our
library,
the
cupertino
library
somebody
was
mentioning.
When
is
you
know,
when's
a
good
time?
Well,
ours
is
a
very
busy
library.
It
is
the
busiest
library
I'm
told
in
the
santa
clara
county.
S
So
with
regard
to
my
interaction
or
our
interaction
with
the
cupertino
library,
as
many
parents
here
can
say,
it
started
with
story
time,
toddler
story
time,
ours
was
goes
back.
You
know
ways
back
to
1997,
but
still
this
was
when
I
believe
the
entrance
to
the
library
was
this
way
and
the
children's
section
used
to
be
down
somewhere.
It
was
actually
at
the
street
level.
This
was
before
the
previous
remodel.
I
think
so.
Yeah
we've
had
a
long
interaction
throughout
their
school
middle
school
and
high
school.
S
My
kids
have
taken
advantage
of
all
those.
You
know
various
books
that
were
offered
through
the
library
and
until
I
got
in
you
know,
started
micromanaging
them.
We
were
solely
responsible
for
the
fines.
For
for
the
upkeep
of
the
library,
I
thought
because
we
would
have
the
little
stack
of
stuff
of
books
in
our
house.
So
I'd
like
to
end
this
by
saying.
Thank
you
mayor.
Thank
you,
city,
council.
You
put
yourself,
I
mean
you
put
our
library
in
the
community
before
yourselves.
S
By
separating
this,
you
know
the
whole
city
project,
the
city
improvement
project,
the
city
hall,
from
the
library
you've.
You
know
we
benefited
the
city,
I
think
definitely
benefited
during
the
unforeseen
pandemic.
That
we've
had
and
last
of
course,
not
the
least,
the
library
foundation,
the
library,
commission,
the
city
staff
and
the
library
staff.
Thank
you
all
for
what
you
do.
C
It's
I
think
it's
a
place
where
we
exchange
knowledge.
We
we
share
our
passion
with
other
fellow
visitors
of
the
library
and
that's
not
possible
without
even
space
like
this,
this
space
complete
the
library.
I
imagine
there
might
be
a
few
future
good
ideas
for
the
next
unicorn
of
the
city.
Silicon
valley
might
be
born
out
of
this
event
space
because
of
the
lectures
that
we
are
going
to
see
so
looking
forward
to
that
next,
I'm
pleased
to
introduce
the
next
cupertino
planning
commission,
representing
planning
commission,
is
its
current
chair,
stephen
scharf.
C
T
T
It's
not
here:
okay,
okay,
I
found
it.
So
thank
you
all
for
coming
here
today,
as
vice
mayor
chao,
mentioned
yeah.
I
was
previously
mayor
when
we
approved
this
project
on
a
five
to
zero
vote,
and
no
one
at
that
time
thought
that
the
pandemic
would
turn
our
world
upside
down.
But
here
we
are
today
two
two
and
a
half
years
later
for
a
public
works
project.
That's
an
amazing
accomplishment,
two
and
a
half
years
and
on
budget.
T
So
I
want
to
introduce
our
past
and
present
planning
commission
members,
vikram
saxena,
jerry
liu,
david
fung
and
also
council
member
kitty.
Moore
was
also
a
planning
commission,
commission
member.
So
thank
you
to
all
of
them
and
a
round
of
applause.
T
So
the
mayor
asked
me,
as
everyone
else,
to
share
an
experience.
I've
had
with
libraries
as
soon
as
he
said
that
I
said.
Oh,
I
said
I
know
what
I'm
going
to
talk
about.
So
when
I
was
probably
three
years
old.
My
mother
took
me
to
our
public
library
in
hollywood.
Florida
back
then
was
before
mayor.
Paul
was
born
before
our
current
librarian
is
born
and
back
then
you
had
to
be
really
quiet
in
the
library.
So
my
mother
kept
saying
you
know
you
have
to
be
quiet.
T
You
have
to
whisper,
there's
no
talking
yeah,
okay,
okay,
okay,
so
we
walked
into
the
library
and
there
was
a
table
full
of
teenagers,
either
middle
school
or
high
school
students,
and
they
were
talking
really
loudly
and
me
being
three
years
old
with
no
fear.
I
walked
up
to
their
table
and
I
screamed
everybody
quiet
in
the
library
and
fortunately,
everybody
laughed
and
I
didn't
get
ejected
from
the
library.
T
F
F
When
I
had
to
do
a
book
report,
and
I
chose
the
book
the
cross
and
the
switchblade,
and
in
there
it
taught
a
very
moving
story
and
in
there
it
talked
about
an
article
that
had
been
written
for
which
the
author
of
the
book
read
that
article
and
then
wrote
the
story
and
I've
never
forgotten
how
that
was
my
first
first
eye-opening
experience
that
the
library
has
books,
but
they
also
have
everything
else,
including
that
life
magazine
that
I
also
checked
out
and
so
to
me.
The
library
is
my
home
away
from
home.
F
U
U
Actually,
so,
no,
I
think
from
again
the
same
question
like
what
what
what
is
you
know
what
I
remember
you
know
my
childhood
was
in
india
and
it
was
always
a
challenging
to
get
a
good
library,
but
I
was
so
lucky
to
have
a
library
closer
to
me
right,
and
that
is
a
place
where
we
go
read
all
the
daily
newspapers
and
the
periodicals
that
really
helped
me
to
find
how
the
world
is
and
that
that
was
the
actually
the
you
know,
the
the
main
thing
for
building
my
foundation,
and
I
always
remember
that
and
my
kids
are
so
lucky
to
have
such
a
good
library
here
and
being
in
cupertino.
J
J
I
thought
that's
really
strange,
because
teenagers
like
to
sleep
in
so
I
asked
why
are
they
here
and
I
thought
maybe
there's
a
school
event,
and
what
I
was
told
is
that
they
were
waiting
for
the
library
to
open
and
I
had
never
seen
a
yeah
for
real.
So
I
will
move
on.
It
gives
me
great
pleasure
to
introduce
our
next
special
guest.
Julia
miller
represents
another
slice
of
civic
life
in
our
area.
The
el
camino
healthcare
district
board
julia
was
a
graduate
of
one
of
the
very
first
classes
of
cupertino
high
school
yay.
J
V
Good
afternoon
everybody
thank
you
for
inviting
peter
and
I
to
this
marvelous
occasion,
we're
just
absolutely
delighted
to
be
a
part
of
it.
Thank
you,
mayor,
darcy
paul.
Well,
my
first,
as
was
my
introduction
I
have
to
fess
up.
I
am
that
old
and
I
was
a
member
of
the
first
graduating
class
of
cupertino
high
school.
V
And
I
actually
am
a
member
of
this
library
and
the
county
library
and
the
sunnyvale
library,
however,
being
chair
of
the
el
camino
healthcare
district
board
and
also
serving
on
the
board
of
the
hospital,
our
board
packages
are
sometimes
300
pages
or
more.
So
that's
about
my
reading
capacity
currently
and
now
I'd
like
to
introduce
my
colleague
and
vice
chair
of
the
board,
dr
peter
fung,.
W
Thank
you,
julia
you're,
never
old,
you're,
just
more
and
more
experienced
well.
El
camino
healthcare
district
was
chartered
quite
a
number
of
years
ago
for
the
health
and
wellness
of
his
constituent
cities,
of
which
cupertino
is
one
apart
from
providing
the
best
quality
care
and
the
most
pleasant
patient
experience.
If
you
were
to
get
sick.
W
W
H
Thank
you,
julia
and
peter
from
the
el
camino
district,
and
before
I
introduce
the
next
group
I
like
to
apologize.
I
need
to
run
away
right
after
this
because
the
high
school's
foundation
is
holding
hosting
a
spring
for
education
event,
honoring
our
retiring
superintendent,
paulie
bovee.
That
starts
at
6
30..
That's
why
the
high
school
district
is
not
represented
here,
but
all
the
teenagers
think
the
library
is
a
bridging
place
connecting
place
such
important
place
for
the
fremont
union
high
school
district.
H
N
Thank
you
so
much.
Thank
you
mayor,
paul
and
cupertino
city
council.
What
else
is
there
to
say
about
libraries?
N
I
just
very
quickly
want
to
thank,
I
see
former
state
assembly
member
jim
kanin
right
there
in
the
back.
Thank
you,
jim.
N
N
I
want
to
make
a
belated
apology
to
claire,
because
I
was
not
quiet
when
that
announcement
occurred,
but
I
just
had
a
whispered
conversation
with
our
chancellor
and
our
college
president
behind
me,
because
we
of
course
have
a
wonderful
library
on
campus
at
de
anza,
but
I
think
we
need
to
step
up
our
game
now
and
that
I
see
this
expansion
so
you'll
be
we'll
be
in
touch
with
your
architects
mayor
paul.
X
I'm
so
pleased
to
be
with
you
tonight
and
I
want
to
share
my
earliest
memory.
I
was
six
years
old,
a
student
at
st
john's
elementary
school
in
san
francisco,
and
we
had
a
bookmobile
that
came.
I
was
going
to
get
to
pick
a
book
I
went
in
there
I
was
so
excited.
I
was
so
overwhelmed
by
all
the
shelves.
X
My
choice
was
a
big
red
book.
I
took
it
home
and
I
couldn't
read
it.
It
was
well
beyond
what
I
could
do
but
fast
forward
and
I
became
a
bibliophile
and
an
audiophile,
and
I
am
just
so
thrilled
to
be
with
you
tonight
in
this
amazing
library,
and
I
want
to
share
my
collection
of
audiobooks
and
hardcovers,
which
I
understand
you'd
like
to
have,
and
so
I
look
forward
to
making
a
donation
of
those
titles
in
the
very
near
future.
Thank
you.
Y
I
am
truly
going
to
honor
you
mayor,
paul
and
say
that
I'll
be
probably
30
seconds,
okay,
so
as
president
of
diaz,
I'm
just
thrilled
to
to
be
here
and
as
I
begin
to
think
about
the
impact
that
a
library
has
had
on
me,
I
think
about
what
happened
about
44
years
ago,
when
I
was
in
second
grade
in
the
library
at
my
elementary
school
was
giving
books
away,
and
so
I
chose
to
to
grab
this
book
by
gene
fritz.
Y
It
was
champion
dog,
prince
tom,
and
this
is
a
book
it
was
published
in
1958.
So
when
I
grabbed
this
book
in
1978,
it
was
about
20
years
old,
and
I
want
to
read
you
the
description
of
of
this
book
that
amazon
has
and
it
says
the
story
of
a
man,
a
boy
and
a
cocker
spaniel
who
everyone
said
wouldn't
do
much
was
too
small
the
wrong
color,
not
smart
enough
and
through
thoughtful,
loving
training,
ignoring
the
naysayers
and
instead
listening
to
his
dog,
the
man,
the
boy
and
the
cocker
spaniel
achieved
things.
Y
No
one
believed
they
could
do
and
when
I
read
that
book,
it
made
me
think
about
what
were
the
possibilities
for
me
as
a
as
a
kid
growing
up,
and
I
never
thought,
reading
that
book
could
have
had
the
impact
that
it
has
on
my
life
today
as
the
president
of
diaza.
So
really
libraries
do
open
up
the
mind
and
show
us
what
the
possibilities
are
for
our
lives
and
for
the
lives
of
others.
Thank
you.
So
much.
Y
A
Well,
there
really
is
not
much
more
to
say,
and
so
I
just
want
to
thank
everyone
for
being
here
this
evening
to
help
us
celebrate
the
opening
of
the
cupertino
library
expansion.
I
did
learn
something
today.
You
know
in
cupertino,
often
things
are
very
upside
down
and
the
expression
goes:
don't
give
a
politician
a
microphone.
A
I
think
in
fact,
in
cupertino
it's
actually
don't
give
our
city
staff
person
a
microphone,
because
then
they
will
keep
going
going.
But
I
will
say
this
about
20
years
ago
we
made
a
design
for
the
library
and
part
of
that
design
ended
up
making
community
hall
and
how
I
really
feel
about
civics
and
engagement,
and
politics
is
that
we
are
always
on
an
arc.
We
are
always
traveling.
A
We
are
always
trying
to
improve
things
and
it
is
never
necessary
to
really
feel
extremely
deflated
as
long
as
we
keep
going-
and
I
think
this
is
a
testament
to
that
kind
of
attitude
and
that
kind
of
stick-to-itiveness,
that
kind
of-
I
guess-
genocide,
quad-
that
you
have
in
this
community.
A
So
I
embrace
it
actually,
and
I
know
that
a
lot
of
the
times
we
get
you
know,
intentions
and
loggerheads,
but
this
is
such
a
beautiful
moment
and
thank
you
very
much
for
being
here
with
us
today
with
vice
mayor,
chao,
council,
member
willie,
councilmember,
moore
and
council
member
way
and
myself
so
for
me
favorite
moment
this
may
be
it
in
the
library,
even
though
it's
been
a
good
46
years
of
library
experiences.
Thank
you
very
much.
Everyone.
