The
City
of
Des
Moines
has
many
different
departments
in
public
works.
One
of
the
departments
we
have
is
curb
replacement.
Most
Des
Moines
streets
are
lined
with
curve
and
amenity
critical
to
any
urban
area,
Public
Works
refurbishes
and
replaces
curb
around
the
city
to
the
benefit
of
nearby
residents
and
motorist,
concrete
curbs
we're
out
from
age
and
water
damage,
but
is
most
common
to
see
the
asphalt
streets
they
line
deteriorate
and
be
refurbished
first
during
the
resurfacing
process
about
four
inches
of
asphalt
is
added
to
the
street,
reducing
the
curbs
distance
above
the
street
level.
A
As
a
result,
Public
Works
locates
the
worst
offenders
and
moves
to
replace
them.
Having
well
maintained,
curbs
on
city
streets
is
provided
many
benefits
to
the
community,
including
containing
water
runoff,
to
help
funnel
it
into
storm
sewers
designed
to
handle
the
load,
creating
a
positive
aesthetic
in
the
neighborhood,
discouraging
drivers,
from
parking
on
lawns
and
sidewalks,
channelizing
traffic
and
low
speed
environments,
making
sidewalks
compliant
with
a
DA
guidelines
for
wheelchair,
accessible
ramps.
Curb
work
is
no
small
task.
It
usually
takes
a
week
or
more
to
redo
a
street
after
the
curb
has
been
completed.
A
A
strip
of
green
space
is
planet
parallel
to
the
outside
edge
of
the
street.
Usually
a
crew
can
do
about
600
feet
of
curb
in
a
day
depending
on
factors
such
as
whether
the
state
of
the
original
curve
and
the
slope
of
the
street
Public
Works
understands
that
curb
projects
disrupt
the
flow
of
traffic,
but
open
all
lanes
for
the
busiest
periods
of
the
day.
Please
slow
down
and
drive
cautiously
and
carefully
in
work
zones.
The
men
and
women
of
Public
Works
are
doing
their
best
to
improve
and
maintain
your
city
with
minimal
disruptions.
