junior
police
explorers
program
continues
to
be
a
popular
and
useful
program
for
Des
Moines
area
youth.
The
Des
Moines
junior
police
explorers
program
is
designed
to
target
urban
youth
in
elementary
and
middle
school
grades
from
fifth
to
eighth
grade.
The
program
is
an
extension
of
the
community
policing
concept.
Police
officers
become
a
mentor
friend
and
someone
the
youth
can
trust,
building
a
safer
community
and
school
while
enriching
the
development
of
our
future
leaders.
A
The
mission
of
the
program
is
to
develop
responsible
and
empowered
youth
through
the
encouragement
of
academics,
citizenship,
excellence,
leadership,
teamwork
and
volunteerism,
building
confidence
and
self-esteem
and
offer
educational
enrichment
in
the
field
of
law
enforcement
and
the
community.
The
benefits
impact,
not
only
the
individuals
involved
in
the
program,
but
the
community
schools
and
police
officers.

program
is
a
means
of
enriching
the
participants
with
not
only
personal
knowledge
but
enhanced
confidence,
self,
respect
and
self
esteem
study,
skills,
time,
management,
discipline,
positive
police
interaction,
decreased
crime,
a
connection
and
commitment
to
the
community
officers
get
an
opportunity
to
make
a
real
difference,
develop
a
relationship
as
a
mentor
and
friend
with
urban
youth
and
get
a
better
understanding
of
the
issues
facing
today's
youth.
The
participants
may
even
enjoy
outings
and
activities
such
as
bowling.

outing
was
particularly
enjoyable
for
the
kids
as
they
had
the
opportunity
to
show
off
their
skills
and
learn
new
ones.
Youth
will
participate
in
once
a
month
meetings
in
an
educational
classroom
setting
with
hands-on
presentations.
Youth
will
also
participate
in
a
community
enrichment
event.
Once
a
month,
participants
will
learn
about
law
enforcement,
government
patrol
officers,
functions,
traffic
enforcement
and
accident
investigation,
narcotic
and
liquor
effects
and
consequences.

Radio
communications
officers,
tactics,
gang
awareness,
conflict
resolution
report,
writing
physical
fitness
training,
CPR
and
First
Aid
crime,
scene
investigations,
teen
crime,
internet
safety
and
more.
The
goal
is
to
get
youth
involved
in
their
community.
Youth
will
participate
in
the
community
through
volunteers
and
projects,
litter
prevention,
community
parks,
improvements,
Animal,
Rescue,
League
visit,
homebound,
elderly
and
more
individuals
participating
in
the
program
are
encouraged
to
commit
to
the
program.
This
is
demonstrated
with
good
behavior
attendance
and
participation.

The
Des
Moines
police
mounted
horse
Patrol
participated
in
the
largest
equine
trade
show
in
Iowa
on
april
fifth,
sixth
and
seven,
the
show
was
held
at
the
Iowa
State
Fair
Grounds
and
featured
cowboy
demonstrations
barrel
racing
and
many
other
demonstrations.
The
patrol
opened
the
show
on
all
days
by
carrying
the
flags
of
Iowa
and
the
United
States
on
horseback
and
excellent
tribute
to
the
flags
and
an
impressive
opening
to
the
show.

The
mounted
patrol
had
a
booth
and
greeted
the
visitors.
They
talked
about
the
program
and
how
they
assist.
The
police
department,
in
a
variety
of
tasks,
including
crowd,
control
and
Galatians,
the
mounted
patrol,
is
active
in
many
community
events
and
trains
for
a
variety
of
situations.
At
events
last
fall,
they
participated
in
training
held
at
the
Iowa
State
Fairgrounds.
The
horses
received
training
and
maneuvering
around
a
variety
of
structures
and
situations
they
can
encounter
on
duty
forces
are
also
trained
or
desensitized
to
noises
and
other
distractions
crowd.

was
also
reviewed.

is

valuable
resource
to
the
department
and
an
important
element
of

community
policing
initiative
